Fatherly Advice, part 1
Even though Blaine and Sebastian never mentioned whose biological child was whose to their kids, the older Devon got it wasn't hard for him to tell he was Sebastian's. Not only that he was taller than his Dad, but he had green eyes, freckles, and hair like his Papa. While some might believe it was difficult for Devon, he wouldn't change his life for anything. He had two Dads who he knew loved him, and even though he didn't admit it often, he adored his sisters. The one thing people didn't seem to understand though, were some of the things Devon had to deal with.
Before leaving for Dalton, he was sitting in his room on his bed when Ainsley popped her head around the corner. "You know, Dad and Papa expect you to have all this stuff packed by the time they get home from work today." She told him before leaning against the doorframe. "Otherwise, we're not going to the Hamptons this weekend, something you know they're both looking forward too."
"I know." Devon told her as he leaned back against his headboard. "It's why only Juliette went over to Aunt Lexi's this morning, so I could finish. It's just…" When he paused, Ainsley walked into his room and made herself comfortable in the chair opposite his bed. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Because Dad and Papa each get that same look on their faces when they're contemplating something, so, what's going on?" Ainsley asked as she tilted her head to the side.
"Do you ever think about whether Dad or Papa is your biological father?"
"I went through that phase, but I talked with Aunt Lexi about it and then Dad and Papa. Why?"
"Curious." Devon replied before crossing his legs to sit Indian style on his bed, causing Ainsley to sit upright. "What did they say?"
"Aunt Lexi was curious, why I was asking."
"Why were you?"
"I was curious where some of my personality traits came from." Ainsley told him. "Once Aunt Lexi and I began to talk, I came to realize my traits really are a mix of the both of them. It's a matter of nurture over nature." When Devon scoffed, Ainsley shook her head. "It's true, look at Aunt Rachel. While she can sing like Shelby, everything else she got from her Dads who have no biological connection." Devon nodded as he realized his sister had a point. "You, me, and Juliette are every bit Dad's and Papa's children."
"True, as they don't treat any of us any differently." Devon said to her. "I don't want to disappoint them."
"The only way you could disappoint them, is if you weren't true to yourself." Ainsley stated. "So, what gives?"
"You know how much I want to go to Dalton, right?"
"I'm pretty certain everyone knows." Ainsley said with a laugh. "Is that what this is about?"
"Yes." Devon told her. "Dad and Papa exceled in everything they did back at Dalton. How do I live up to that?"
"You don't." Ainsley told him bluntly. "You have to be you. Think about it, Tyler and Theo said the hardest part of going was trying to live up to who their Dads were, especially Theo since his Dad is Uncle Wes."
"I know, but…they don't have all the same interests. I play lacrosse just like Papa did. I'm going to audition for the Warblers which is something else entirely considering who Dad and Papa are." Devon said in frustration. "How the hell am I going to manage?"
"You're rooming with Liam, right?" Ainsley asked and he nodded. "He'll be going through it too. Heck, not only does he have his Dad's memory, but Xander's. You're not going through it alone."
"Easy for you to say!"
"If it's such a freaking burden, tell Dad and Papa you don't want to go!" Ainsley yelled as she stood up. "You're the one that wanted this, it's not as though someone pushed it on you!" With that last comment Ainsley stormed out of his room and went to the living room. While she understood where Devon was coming from, he was the one putting the pressure on, not anyone else.
By the time Blaine and Sebastian came home that day, Ainsley was stretched out on the couch reading a book with the stereo on. It wasn't till Juliette sat down beside her did she lower her book. "You seemed quite engrossed in what you're reading?" Sebastian said before taking a closer look at the book and promptly understood why. "Did your brother finish?"
"Who knows?" Ainsley replied causing Sebastian's expression to change. "I don't know Papa as last I saw him he was worrying about things he has no control over."
"Did you try and talk to him?" When she scrunched up her nose, Sebastian had to refrain from laughing as she was so Blaine in that moment. "Ainsley?"
"I tried Papa, I did, but you know him."
"Once he sets his mind on something, it's hard to get him to change it, I know." While Sebastian was speaking, Blaine came to join them as he'd gone to put some things in the kitchen. Sensing Blaine beside him, Sebastian looked towards him. "We need to talk with Devon."
"Please tell me he didn't give Ainsley issues today." Blaine said while sitting down on the air of the chair.
"No more so than usual." Sebastian told him and Ainsley nodded in affirmation. "From what she said, it sounds as though his impending departure is catching up with him." Blaine nodded as that didn't surprise him in the slightest. "Ainsley, would you mind helping Juliette finish packing her bag?"
"Nope!" Ainsley said as she said up. "Come on Juliette; let's get you packed so we can leave!" Juliette smiled and quickly followed her sister out of the room and towards her room.
"What do you think is bothering him this time B?" Sebastian asked as he sat down in the chair Blaine was sitting in the arm of.
"Your guess is as good as mine, I mean, it was only a month ago we had the conversation with him that it was alright that he was straight." When the words came out of his mouth, Sebastian had to try not to laugh. "Bas."
"Come on B, it was cute." Sebastian said as he brought Blaine down onto his lap. "I still can't believe he thought we were going to be upset about it."
"Well, considering the conversation I had with Wes about it after we spoke with him, he was really worried. I'm just grateful he called Wes to talk to him. It's as Wes told him, it's not as though we were disappointed that Ainsley liked boys. The only thing we've ever wanted for our kids is to be happy and true to who they are."
"I know that, but I can see where he was coming from." Sebastian said in response. "Unlike a lot of his friends, I'm sure it crossed his mind more than most that wonder if he was straight or gay."
"True. So, what do you say we go see what's bothering him?" Blaine then leaned down and gave Sebastian a kiss. "And then hopefully after that, we can change and be on our way if he finished packing as he was supposed to." Sebastian nodded before helping Blaine up off his lap. When they reached Devon's bedroom, they found him sitting on the floor looking at the boxes he had packed up and stacked against the wall. "Is that everything?" Blaine asked, bringing Devon's attention to the two of them in the doorway.
"I think so, but according to Xander expect a call from me shortly after I get settled to tell you I forgot something." Devon replied as they walked into his room. It only took one look at the two of them for him to know Ainsley spoke with them. "I'm fine."
"No, you're not." Sebastian told him while loosening his tie. "What's going on?"
"Nothing." Devon said as he leaned back on his hands. "When are we leaving?"
"We're not going anywhere until you talk to us." Blaine stated. "According to Ainsley, you're worrying about some things."
"Nothing big."
"If it wasn't big, she wouldn't have mentioned it to us." Sebastian told him. "So, what's going on?"
"Nothing!"
"Devon Alexander!" Sebastian snapped back in return and the moment he did, he felt Blaine's hand on his forearm, bringing his eyes to him. After looking at Blaine, Sebastian ran his fingers through his hair. It was moments like this; it truly proved how much the two were alike. Once he'd calmed slightly, Sebastian crouched down next to Devon. "Reacting that way, only proves something is going on, I would know." That caused Devon to look at Blaine who nodded.
"You know you can talk to us about anything, right?" Blaine said to him as he crouched down beside Sebastian.
"I know, I…" Devon replied before huffing. "What did Ainsley tell you?"
"Simply that you are worrying about things you have no control over." Blaine told him as he moved to actually sit down on the floor. "What's bothering you Devon?"
"Living up to your legacy." Devon's response had the two of them looking at one another, before Sebastian sat down as well. "The guys that are already there have told me, it's no secret that more of us are coming. Hell, one of the older students asked Tyler if it was true that Blaine Anderson's and Sebastian Smythe's son was attending next year, Theo was asked the same thing. It seems the big question is which of my Dads am I going to be more like." With that said, Blaine placed a hand on Devon's knee.
"You're your own person Devon." Blaine said to him. "While people might assume you're like us, who you are in some extent, you're you."
"Yet you and Papa exceled in everything you did."
"True, we did." Sebastian told him. "We worked very hard to achieve what we did, but we didn't do that for anyone but ourselves. Why are you worrying, as you're an excellent student and if I do say so, one hell of a lacrosse player?" Once Sebastian spoke, Blaine noticed a shift in Devon causing him to glance at Sebastian.
"Bas, you just stated his case. Being an excellent student and lacrosse player puts him in direct comparison to you who took the school by storm." Blaine said causing Devon to look at Sebastian. "You know the only thing Papa and I expect of you Devon, is to do your best."
"I know, it's just…"
"Devon, those people don't know you yet so, screw what they expect of you." Sebastian stated. "Don't try to be me or your Dad as it won't work because you're not us. There are plenty of things I wish I could've done like your Dad back then."
"And there are things I wished I was able to do like your Papa." Blaine added. "But certain things weren't our fortes, so we focused on things that were. Think about it, you know your Uncle Wes pretty well and Theo's got a much different personality than he does."
"He's more laid back, like Aunt Hailey." Sebastian couldn't help but chuckle at that comment as he'd pointed that out to Blaine more than a few times. "But beside that, he's a lot like Uncle Wes."
"Exactly. Just as Tyler is very much his Dad, but you get him pissed and all one sees is his Mom." Sebastian added causing Devon to laugh. "As long as you do your best, that's all we care about Devon. We know following in all of our footsteps isn't easy, regardless of how long it's been since we attended Dalton. The only thing you can do is be you and everything else will fall into place."
"That's easier said than done Papa."
"We know." Blaine told him. "But keep in mind, you won't be alone, you'll have plenty of people around you that don't expect you to be anything but you."
"Honestly, I don't think that school knows what's it's in for having all of you boys together." Sebastian said as well. "Are you feeling a bit better?"
"Yes."
"Good. Are you packed for the weekend?"
"Yes."
"Alright. Then take your bag to the living room as we're out of here shortly after the two of us change." Sebastian told him as he and Blaine got up off the floor. "Also, at one point this weekend the three of us are going to talk about a few things before we leave for Ohio next week." When Devon groaned, Sebastian laughed. "You're not getting out of it."
"We've already had that talk Papa."
"We know that." Blaine said to him. "But with you leaving, we're going to have it again as we won't be around. And with Crawford not that far away, better safe than sorry."
"Dad!"
"Simply because the thought isn't on your mind now, doesn't mean it won't be at some point." Blaine told him. "Talk to Xander, I'm pretty certain he and Jeff had the talk, more times than he wants to admit."
"That's because Xander…" Devon stopped as his Dads stared at him given that Xander was still involved with Gabrielle. "…never mind."
"Smart move." Sebastian stated. "Now, get up as it won't take us long to be ready to go." Devon nodded before beginning to get up as his Dads walked out of his room. Once they were in the hallway on the way to their room, Sebastian slipped his arm around Blaine. "You know it's only a matter of time before that switch flips in his head, right?"
"I do, he's got your DNA which is why we're going to have that talk with him as often as we deem fit." Blaine said before they made their way into their room, Sebastian closing the door behind them. "While I'd prefer he waits till he's out of high school, I'm not going to delude myself Bas."
"I know, and neither am I. Just as I try not to think of how much Xander is like Jeff." Sebastian said as he began to unbutton his dress shirt. "Honestly B, if any of our kids know what we were like back then, they'd freak-out."
"Well, Nick did tell Xander that Jeff snuck Britt into school."
"True, but they have no idea what else the rest of us were up to, and I'd prefer it stays that way." Sebastian then tossed his shirt to the side as he watched Blaine changed out of his chinos and into a pair of shorts. "While I've been honest when asked, there are certain things I never want them to know."
"Safe to say, we all feel that way Bas. We just have to keep in mind that we weren't necessarily angels back then when the time comes and they get in trouble, which you know is going to happen."
"You've been talking to Thad."
"And you haven't been. All of our boys at Dalton together is going to make for some stories, most we probably hope to never hear, but they'll talk about for years. I wouldn't change those years for anything Bas, aside from one point."
"There's probably at least one thing we all want to change, the only thing we can all say for those moments, we learned from them." Sebastian then stepped up behind Blaine and wrapped his arms tightly around him. "Are you ready for a little quality time with your husband Killer?"
"Absolutely, I've been thinking about it all day." Blaine then leaned his head back and was met by a kiss that ended with a knock on their door. "We'll be out in a minute."
"I'll be counting!" Ainsley replied playfully causing Blaine and Sebastian to laugh.
"We better hurry up, she's impatient."
"Wonder who she gets that from?" Sebastian retorted causing Blaine to scrunch up his nose, much as she'd done earlier. "All the more reason, Devon needs to be spoken to."
