Generations Collide
For as busy as the boys were between their studies, sports, clubs, and Warblers, the boys took welcomed opportunities to completely their yearly volunteer hours. From the moment Hiram called Rachel to ask if the boys would be interested, it didn't take long for her to call the others so they could call their boys. Since there were only a couple of months to get their hours complete, the boys jumped at the opportunity as it was something different from the norm. With a few of them having commitments on Saturday morning, Hiram said they could come once they were finished.
Devon, Zach, and Jacob were the last to get to the parking lot and the three looked exhausted. "Will someone please remind me why I agreed to do this after a game?" Devon said as he got comfortable in the back of Theo's car since he was in no mood to drive.
"Because like the rest of us, you have hours to finish up and the rest of the year is booked pretty solid." Theo told him. "This weekend will get us the hours we all need so we can focus on rehearsals and everything else."
"Good point." Devon said as he turned his head slightly as the rest of the guys got settled. "Why is it every time we all go out, it's never easy figuring whose going to ride with who?"
"Because we all love to drive." Zach said as he stretched his legs which were as long as his Dad's. "The only reason we're not complaining, is we're exhausted and are sleeping on the way to Lima." Devon laughed as he couldn't argue with that rational as it was true. While he spoke, Liam got into the passenger's seat. "What's taking so long?"
"Jacob's granddads called and asked if we'd be hungry upon arrival, so they could get everything ordered so it was there when we arrive." Liam said in response. "Needless to say, we all know what he told them."
"Right now, the only thing I want is coffee considering how freaking early this day started." Devon stated as Theo turned his car on as the others finally started to get into the others.
"You're as bad as your Dads."
"Is that really surprising?" Devon replied. "While I know plenty of people think my Dads put a lot of pressure on me to excel, they don't. Sure, they set quite a standard while they attended school, but I put this pressure on myself. Just as Ainsley did, and still does, the same goes for Juliette."
"He was referring to your coffee habit." Theo state causing Liam and Zack to laugh. "The rest, we know it's you as you're an over-achiever, like the rest of us."
"While we all know our parents want us to be the best we can be, they also don't want us running ourselves ragged." Zach added. "Also, the older we've all gotten, they've reminded us that we need to do something with our lives we're passionate about."
"Your Dad covered all his bases." Liam said. "Danced for a while before heading off to med school."
"He said it was something he was glad he did, though that meant he was a bit behind everyone else. Though, it only reinforced everything my grandfather had ever said to him." Zach replied. "Even to this day he's reluctant in telling him he was right, they have a mutual understanding to not discuss it."
"Even to this day, I don't understand why my Dad didn't go into music considering how insanely talented he is." Devon said. "Yet, he made the decision that was right for him. And much as we all tease him about "shrinking us", we couldn't have asked for a better Dad, even Papa tells him that. Then at the same time, we know how lucky we are to have Papa. They really do bring out the best in not only each other, but all of us."
"You do know if they ever heard you talking like this, they'd never let you hear the end of it." Theo teased as he drove.
"I've actually told them, which caught them off-guard." Devon replied. "I don't even remember what prompted it, but the three of us had quite the conversation last summer one day when we were out in the Hamptons."
"And I bet your sisters were nowhere to be found." Liam added, and Devon confirmed. "Crazy how now we appreciate time alone with our parents more."
"Ainsley always told me there would come a time, yet I tended to dismiss it. Yet the older I've gotten, the more appreciative I've become."
"I think we all have." Theo told him. "For as crazy as everything was when we were younger, now we have a better appreciation of everything. I mean, think of how lucky our parents are to have the friends they do, which led to all of us having a similar sort of bond with one another."
"The only difference is none of us have yet to have to deal with someone so delusional, all of us have gotten dragged into it." Devon said, irritation in his voice as he did. "Hell, none of our siblings or relatives have had to deal with that. Frustrating exes, sure, but delusional ones that can't seem to get a hint, not so much."
"Please, tell us how you really feel Dev." Liam said with a laugh knowing all too well how riled up he could get when he thought about it.
"The drive isn't long enough for me to fully voice my thoughts and feelings on the subject." Devon stated. "And that's without having the entire story as I know there are some aspect of it that my Dads have left out."
"Knowing your Dads there is a good reason for it." Theo reminded him.
"Oh, I know there is. Just as I know it's because of that relationship, they've said the things they have my siblings and myself when it comes to dating and love." Devon replied. "Relationships are never easy, they take work and you have to listen to what your partner has to say, otherwise, it's doomed."
"My Dad said the same thing." Liam chimed in with. "Just as you have to be open to hear what your friends have to say. You might not like it, but if these are people you trust, you shouldn't dismiss what they see."
"For if they act truly different around others versus you, who are they really." Zack added.
"Safe to say, all of our parents are on the same page in that regard." Theo said. "Speaking of, remember that we all need to be on our best behavior as you know there is a good chance McKinley students will be there."
"They should be told the same thing." Devon stated. "Nine times out of ten, they're the ones that start shit, not us, we simply finish it." When Liam laughed, Devon leaned forward. "Find something funny Liam?"
"In that moment, you sounded exactly like your Papa. Both of my parents can't help but comment how much you remind them of him." Liam replied. "Though, in certain moments you are very much your Dad."
"Uncle Coop and Aunt Lexi say the same thing. Much as we're all our own person, we're without a doubt, our parents' kids."
"It could be worse, as I think we all lucked out in the parent department." Theo responded. "Aside from moments we've been pissed at them because they've disciplined us, we all have good relationships with them."
"Amazing how when we've gotten mad at them, it's technically our own faults as our behavior brought it on." Zach said.
"Something my Mom doesn't hesitate to remind me of." Liam stated as the others laughed. "Yea, I know, but you've all seen my Mom get upset and it's not pretty."
"She's still got nothing on Aunt Santana." Devon reminded them. "The last thing any of us ever want is to be on the receiving end of one of her lectures again. My Dad said after witnessing that one, he said that was her alter ego, Auntie Snixx, who even Papa doesn't mess with."
"We all deserved that though." Liam said. "Tyler said she kept going even after the rest of us left and Uncle Nick didn't intervene."
"Needless to say, none of us have screwed up like that again." Theo chimed in. "The disappointment my Dad had in his eyes, killed me."
"I think we all felt that way." Zach said. "Who would've ever guessed the look of disappointment from them would've been worse than from our Moms."
"Which should tell you all just how screwed I was." Devon added, earning a laugh. "It's true. Then add in Ainsley walking by reminding me that she'd never seen them that disappointed before. For what we did was truly irresponsible and they expected better than that from us."
"And that is why none of us will ever throw another party at our grandparents' homes while they are out of town." Liam reminded them. "Looking back, it really was stupid considering they've let us throw parties in the past."
"And that's why it was stupid. Now if you all wouldn't mind, I'm going to take a nap so I'm not an utter bastard once we arrive." Devon then settled against the back door before closing his eyes before even getting a response from the guys. While they could've easily commented on his statement, they left well enough alone knowing all too well how irritable Devon got when he was tired and knew how hard he'd pushed himself that week.
Before arriving in Lima, Zach sent a text out to everyone else that they were hitting the Lima Bean before reaching their final destination. That didn't come as a surprise to anyone as Tyler replied back he was about to ask if a coffee stop was on the agenda. Upon pulling into the parking lot, Liam looked back and saw Zach nudging Devon to wake him. None of them bothered to get out until the last car pulled into the parking lot. Once they did exit, it became obvious Devon hadn't been the only one that had taken a nap during the drive.
"Remember guys, we need to make this quick since my Granddads are waiting for us." Jacob stated as they walked towards the entrance, earning a few looks along the way. "You already knew that, didn't you?"
"We did." Tyler replied. "But reminders aren't a bad thing especially after the morning most of us had."
After walking inside, a few of the guys went to go use the restroom while the others waited in line. Even though it was close to eleven, the guys were surprised by how busy the place was and how slow the line was moving. "Seriously, is ordering coffee that freaking difficult." Devon muttered to Max and Liam who were standing beside him as they listened to the person ahead of them change up their order again.
"Clearly it is." Max stated while rolling his eyes. "So to distract from this ridiculous wait, have you called Uncle Seb or Uncle Blaine yet?"
"No, I'll talk to them later as they're currently at Juliette's recital." Devon replied.
"You should at least text them." Liam chimed in. "They'd want to know."
"And they will, later." He then raked his fingers through his hair. "Waiting to tell them isn't going to change anything."
"True, but you know Uncle Seb would get that all knowing look of pride." Max told him, causing Devon to smirk. "Now that, is the Dev we all know."
"Down playing how incredible I am, is pretty pointless, isn't it?"
"I wouldn't go that far." Liam said with a laugh. "But there's no denying you're talented."
"Just like my Papa."
Little did the boys realize that someone behind them was rolling their eyes at their conversation. They never would've either of they didn't soon hear a comment. "Nice to know some things haven't changed, Dalton boys are as arrogant as ever." Upon hearing the comment, Liam simply shook his head knowing nothing good would come from this.
"You don't know us, so who are you to judge." Devon stated as he slowly turned around to face the man, a smirk soon appearing on his face.
"One only had to hear you speak to know you're arrogant."
"Dev, you don't want to do this." Jacob said as he appeared at his side, recognizing the man before them. "Trust me, don't go there as it won't turn out well."
"Interesting name, guess your parents wanted something different, how quaint."
"It's short for Devon smartass." He stated as he straightened his stance and it becoming more evident to those around him he was well aware of who was standing before him. "You're as judgmental as ever, aren't you?"
"And you're a rude young man, your parents would be ashamed." When Devon laughed, it caught the rest of the guys' attention.
"Given who I'm talking to, they'd understand, trust me."
"Do I even know you?"
"Not really, but you sure as hell know my parents…Hummel." Devon said to him before taking his coffee from Tyler as a blank expression appeared on Kurt's face. "Hell, you know most of our parents. Right guys?"
"I should've known." Kurt said in frustration. "Figures the time I come to town I'd run into the lot of you. Isn't Lima out of the way for you Westerville boys?"
"We're in town to help my Granddads." Jacob told him.
"Let me guess, you're Rachel's son."
"The one and only." He said proudly as he stood tall. "I bet if you take a look around, it wouldn't be hard to figure out who all of our parents are, because as Devon said, you know them." After a look at them, they watched his expression change as he took a close look at the boys before him. "Figure it out?"
"I've got a good idea." Kurt then tilted his head and took a good look at Devon. "Let me guess, your Blaine and Sebastian's son."
"Did my dashing good looks give it away or my stunning charm?" Devon said, his tone more than a little sarcastic. "Hence my response to you saying they'd be ashamed of me. They'd know exactly why I copped the attitude I did." Just after he spoke, a petite girl came walking up to them.
"Uncle Kurt, we need to get going." She then turned to the guys and by the looks on all of their faces realized she'd interrupted something. "Hey guys."
"Christina." They replied, causing her to blush, something Kurt couldn't help but notice.
"Should I ask what was going on when I walked in?"
"Given you're not in the dark with family history, I'm sure you've got a good idea." Devon replied. "He jumped to an assumption upon overhearing a conversation I was having with some of the guys."
"About?"
"Dev was named all-conference." Liam told her. "We were telling him he needed to call his Dads and in typical form, humble bragging began."
"You call that humble, it's arrogant as I said." Kurt stated. "Talking about how incredible you are. You sound just like your Dad."
"Actually, I sound just like my Papa, as my Dad is more easy going."
"Well excuse me."
"Is there one?"
"Dev, we need to go as people are starting to stare." Theo told him. "Plus, the last thing we need is history repeating itself in some way." Devon looked at him before looking back at Kurt. "Dev."
"Fine, but only because we have someplace to be. Christina, it was nice seeing you." Devon then shot her a wink before walking out of the Lima Bean and heading towards the car.
"Aren't the rest of you going to follow?" Kurt said to them.
"We will momentarily." Liam said as he and Tyler stepped before him. "You should be thankful that he listened to Theo, because he is every bit his Papa."
"Even though he's a teenager, don't under estimate him." Tyler added.
"He's arrogant."
"Maybe, but he can back every bit of it up." Zach told him. "That was combined by his general dislike of you."
"He doesn't know me."
"He knows enough." Jacob responded. "Just as the rest of us do. You see, your actions back in the day are essentially a not what to do or how to treat people lesson for our parents." He then looked at Christina. "I'm sorry for anything you might've overheard, but I'm sure you understand how it happened."
"I do." She replied. "You guys should probably get going before Devon decides he has more he'd like to say."
"That's probably a good idea. Later." Jacob said and soon he and the rest of the guys were on their way.
After the group left, Kurt looked down at his niece and cocked his head. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Just how well do you know them?" Kurt asked before the two went to place their orders.
"Pretty well." She told him. "I know Jacob probably the best, but that shouldn't surprise you since Rachel is his Mom. It's through him I got to know the rest of the guys once we started competing against one another. Dad explained all the connections to me."
"Is Devon always that arrogant?"
"No, and from what they said you overheard a conversation amongst them so the attitudes you believe you heard, was probably nothing more than them joking around. Devon is actually a pretty cool guy." When she smiled Kurt's eyes widened and he shook his head. "Relax, I'm not into Devon, even if he is seriously handsome."
"Good." Christina couldn't help but roll her eyes at the statement. "You should stay away from them."
"Relax Uncle Kurt, nothing is going on between me and them, we're merely friends." She told him. "Though…"
"Let me guess, you have a crush on one of them."
"No, as I don't see them enough to have an actual crush. I'd be lying if I said I didn't find most of them attractive. A few of my friends have flirted with them, but nothing has ever come of it. From what I know, those that do have girlfriends are dating girls from Crawford."
"Fellow rich kids."
"Basically, though it makes sense given the school is right next door to them. It's no different from dating someone at McKinley for me." Christina told him as they got into his car, and as they did noticed the Dalton boys all standing around theirs talking. "Wonder what's going on over there?"
"You're probably better off not knowing."
By the time the guys had gotten outside to join Devon, they'd found him on the phone ranting in French. While more than a few of them took the language, when he spoke this quickly it was harder to understand what he was saying since he was fluent. Though the bits of the conversation they did catch, they could tell he was speaking with Ainsley and it was about Kurt. When Liam was about to approach him, Max grabbed ahold of his arm. "Don't, he needs to get this out of his system. In this moment, he is every bit Uncle Seb, as I've seen him like this when he and my Dad are debating. Ewan, this is normal, right?"
"Yep!" Ewan replied as he leaned back against the car. "We should all be thankful he called Ainsley as she's the only one that can calm him down when he gets like this, well except Uncle Blaine. I honestly don't blame him for being pissed. He hadn't done anything wrong, yet dude judged him and it's not in his DNA to back down from a situation like that, especially with that SOB."
"Judgmental, aren't we?" Theo joked as they watched Devon walk the parking lot with his phone to his ear. "He really lived up to everything we ever heard, didn't he?"
"Sure did." Tyler stated. "I'm sure none of our parents would be shocked to hear it either. Of all people for him to confront though, Devon was the worst choice."
"You think?" Jacob said to them. "Any of us would've been a better choice than him. I have a feeling he's going to be having a long conversation with his Dads tonight."
"You're right, I will be." Devon responded as he walked towards them. "Let's go as we need to get these hours in."
"Are you okay?" Theo asked as they all headed towards the cars they'd traveled in.
"I'm fine. Per Ainsley the Anderson-Smythe temper got the better of me, but she doesn't blame me as she would've done the same thing." Devon told him before settling in the backseat along with Zach.
"Anderson-Smythe, wouldn't it be one or the other?" Zach asked as Theo backed out of the parking space.
"In this case, no as in certain moments my Dad's temper has a shorter fuse than my Papa, hard as that may be to believe."
"No, I believe that given everything my Dad has ever said about him." Theo replied. "Are you sure you're going to be alright?"
"Yes, and even if I wasn't there isn't much we can all do." Devon said and they could all hear the frustration in his voice. "It's not as though I can skip out on what's going on. First off, I need get these hours done as my schedule is full the remainder of the school year. And secondly, you drove. One of the downfalls of carpooling."
"Did Ainsley have any pearls of wisdom to share?" Zach asked causing Devon to turn and look at him. "Did she?"
"Reminded me to take a deep breath before doing something I might regret. Something that would probably then bring my Papa to town, that is after my Grandparents bail me out."
"You wouldn't do something that stupid." Liam told him.
"Are you that sure about that?"
"Yes." Liam replied confidently. "Though I could see you coming close, but cooler heads prevailing before it occurred."
"Fair enough, as that's a pretty honest assessment." Devon replied before running his fingers through his hair while taking a deep breath. "Anyone know what we're going to be doing?" When there was silence, he sighed softly and realized he'd have to wait till they arrived to get an answer. The one thing he hoped for though was that whatever it was would help him keep his mind off of what happened knowing the more he thought about it, the more frustrated he'd become.
Shortly after they pulled into the parking lot, they were met by LeRoy and Hiram who were happy to see them. "We truly are happy that you boys were able to help us out this weekend." LeRoy told them as they headed into the building. "There is still so much to do and time is not on our side."
"How long had the theater not been in use Mr. Berry?" Max asked as they headed inside.
"Too long, which is why it's taking longer than we imagined cleaning it out." Hiram replied. "Our budget is tight and we've had to use that for the bigger things."
"And there simply aren't enough volunteers to get it done in a timely manner." LeRoy added.
"Not to be blunt Grandpa, but this will count for our hours, right?" Jacob inquired.
"Yes, we checked with your headmaster before we even called your Mom to ask if you boys would be interested in helping." LeRoy assured them. "Your headmaster ever came out here the other day to check things out and saw what you boys have ahead of you." While he was speaking, Devon's phone vibrated in his pocket causing him to slip it out to take a look. A subtle smile crept across his face upon seeing a text from his Papa, as he should've known Ainsley would've mentioned something to him.
To quote your Dad, no reaction is the best way to get back at him. Don't give him the satisfaction of getting under your skin.
Though if he's still the same pain in the ass and you can't help it, make me proud. PS, don't tell your Dad I said that.
Upon reading the last text, he had to stifle a laugh since the response was very true to form in regards to who Sebastian still was. Though he was subtle, Max and Ewan managed to notice a change in his demeanor. Once LeRoy and Hiram had delegated certain tasks to the boys to start with, they went to check on other volunteers as the boys figured out who was best suited for those tasks. "What's with the smirk?" Ewan asked him as they went to go grab gloves in order to start moving old set pieces.
"Ainsley happens to be with our Dads and mentioned my call to at least our Papa."
"Let me guess, you received a typical Uncle Seb response?" Max replied.
"I received a response that would be typical for any of our Dads." Devon told them as Zach joined them. "While he'd prefer I not antagonize matters, should it be necessary…"
"Do it well." Ewan said with a knowing smirk on his face.
"Essentially." Devon replied as they lifted the first set piece to bring it outside. "I'm still pissed at myself that I snapped. Yet the instant I saw him, I couldn't help myself."
"That's because he really hasn't changed." Zach said to him. "And it's not as though the history between him and your Dads is a secret. I'm pretty sure I speak for all of us in that we would've snapped as well if we were in your shoes."
"Remember, it all started because he was an ass." Max reminded him. "He made an assumption about us simply because we attend Dalton. The conversation he overheard was no different than ones we usually have. It also didn't help that Liam and I were goading you."
"True, but according to him I was being arrogant."
"To be honest, you are, but not in an over the top way." Ewan said to him earning him quite the look from Devon. "I'm simply speaking the truth, but you're no different than the rest of us. Hell, according to my Dad, I'm the worst of the bunch given how often he tells me to get my attitude in check." The others couldn't help but laugh. "See, so don't let his comment get under your skin."
"Not to mention as New Yorkers, we view things differently." Max added. "We see that at school, though it's not as bad since plenty of our classmates from outside Westerville."
"That's a big difference, at least according to my Dad." Zach said. "Hell, there's a big difference between Westerville and Lima alone."
"True, but this wasn't another kid judging us, it was Hummel." Devon stated as they set the piece down.
"And that's what you have to keep in mind." Ewan told him. "Even when he was a teen along with our parents, he had issues with anyone that had success and/or money, though the two tend to go hand in hand. I'm sure he's already formed opinions on each and every one of us, none of them flattering."
"Given the way he looked at me, mine was instantaneous. Even if he feigned not knowing who we were, he knew with one look."
"He's got a point." Max said as they headed back in for the next piece. "For some of us there is a little more guess work, for others, not so much." The four were making their way in when Liam, Jacob, Tyler, and Theo came walking up to them, all looking a bit distraught. "What's wrong?"
"It might be best if Devon stays out here helping organize everything." Theo said in response as the four of them looked on.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me, he's here, isn't he?" Devon replied and all three replied in the affirmative. "Mind if I ask why as he certainly wasn't dressed for manual labor?"
"Christina asked him to help her go through the old wardrobe closets to figure out if anything was salvageable or able to be repurposed in some way." Jacob told him. "Needless to say, he's not happy that we're all here either. Supposedly he had no idea that my Granddads were the ones leading the charge to restore this place."
"That's bullshit!" Ewan exclaimed rather loudly. "There is no way Christina didn't mention the Berrys were behind all of this."
"I said the same thing." Jacob replied. "Albeit in a more reserved manner given my granddads were nearby."
"You don't have to explain, we all do the same thing." Devon told him. "Let me guess, he's worried we're going to harass him."
"Basically." Liam said in response.
"If he leaves us alone, we'll do the same."
"I told my granddads that exact thing." Jacob replied. "Yet he…he said he doubted you would be able to behave yourself. And might've made a snide comment regarding like father, like son."
"Being compared to either of my Dads is a compliment, whether it's meant that way or not." Devon responded. "I'm extremely proud to be their son."
"We know." Tyler said to him. "Just as we all are. The Berrys were actually quite appalled by the comment given how long it's been since they've even seen one another. Outside of that thing for Mr. Schuester your Dads came to Lima for, they don't come to Ohio unless it's family or Dalton related."
"So, are we simply caving to his demands to keep me away from him?"
"No." Theo told him. "We just thought you'd prefer something that would keep you away from him, as we know the mere sight of him irritates you."
"I wonder why that may be." Devon sarcastically replied. "You all do realize my Dads would be justifiably concerned knowing I'm around him."
"We know." Liam said to him. "That's why we thought you might prefer doing something that keeps you from him, less temptation to snap."
"You know what, screw it. I want to cross paths with him as often as I can."
"Dev, do you really think that's a good idea?" Max replied, clearly a bit concerned with Devon's idea.
"I do, as you all know I'm capable of keeping my emotions in check when I'm not caught off-guard." Devon said to them in response. "I'm now well aware of the fact that Hummel is on the premises, so no more surprises. And we all know from the look he gave me at the Lima Bean, my mere presence will be enough to irritate him."
"So, you're going to go out of your way to cross paths with him, without saying a word?" Zach asked.
"Yes. While it might sound childish, it's a way to irritate him without risking my tempter getting the better of me."
"What about giving as good as you get?" Ewan questioned.
"I'll bide my time, but I promise you all…he'll snap first, justifying anything I might say in response." When Theo crossed his arms, he walked over beside him and slipped his arm around his shoulders. "Relax, I've got this."
"That's what I'm worried about." Devon shot him a wink, before making his way back inside ready for the fun and games to begin. "Please tell me I'm not the only one concerned."
"You're not, but once Devon makes his mind up, there is no changing it." Liam replied as they headed in after him to continue their work. "Especially in a situation like this.
For the next few hours they went about doing what had been asked of them, helping to clear the stage. Yet the guys had to admittedly laugh at Devon who found ways to walk passed Kurt who was sorting costumes with Christina and her friends. With every pass, Kurt glared at him and Devon simply smiled in response, frustrating him even more. For as worried as the guys had been, Devon didn't utter a single word to Kurt and only spoke to those that addressed him outside of his friends.
It wasn't till they were all sitting down for a break and Devon was taking a call with his Dad did things change. "I know you wish I wasn't being an antagonist of sorts, but I can't help myself Dad."
"I know, and part of that is my fault as well as Papa's for being as open as we are." Blaine told him as Sebastian looked across the living room at him. "Yet if we hadn't been, you and yours sisters would've only grown more curious in regards to things we've said about dating and love."
"It's not your fault Dad, we love that you and Papa are so honest with us." Devon responded. "My issues stem from him not only being a complete and utter ass to you both, but he was a jerk to me."
"Devon."
"Dad, it's true. If you were here, you would've honestly been proud of me as I refrained from saying exactly what I thought of him."
"I am, as I know it couldn't have been easy. Just as I'm aware of the fact that he's never really changed. So I'm not surprised he reacted the way he did to seeing you boys, even with him being the adult in the situation."
"You're handling this a lot better than I expected Dad."
"That's because I have way too much experience dealing with him." Blaine told him. "So the fact that your reaction didn't go beyond who you typically are, I'm happy."
"And if I'd taken things further?"
"Depending on how far it went or the reason behind it, it could be justifiable. I simply don't want you believing you have to defend me and Papa all these years later."
"It didn't start that way Dad."
"I know, hence why I said what I did. I have no issue with you defending yourself. You also acted responsibly in reaching out to your sister after it happened."
"I needed to talk to someone who would understand." Devon told him. "I mean, the guys get it, but it's different."
"I get that, trust me, I do. Now, have tensions lessened at all?"
"Somewhat, but you can tell he's not happy being around any of us." Devon replied. "Christina even came over and apologized to all of us as she had no idea we were going to be here today. She said if she had known, she never would've asked him for his help."
"That doesn't surprise me since she seems like a sweet girl from the times we've met, and the things Rachel has told us."
"She is." Devon told him. "Are you sure you're not upset with me Dad?"
"Positive, as I know ignoring him isn't easy."
"It would be easier if he didn't constantly glare at me." Hearing his Dad laugh caused Devon to lean back against the wall. "What's so funny?"
"Further proof that even after all this time, he's still the same." Blaine said in response. "So try to not let him get to you."
"And if he does?"
"I believe Papa already answered that question."
"So much for him asking me not to tell you what he said."
"After all these years, I read him extremely well and know his tells like the back of my hand."
"He could say the same about you."
"He certainly could." Blaine told him. "All I ask, is that you're not the one to start it."
"Fair enough." After he spoke, Devon looked to the side as Liam called out to him, telling him they needed to get back to work. "I need to get going Dad."
"So I heard." Just as he responded, Sebastian came over and sat down beside him. "If anything else happens, don't hesitate to call us."
"I won't Dad."
"We love you."
"I love you guys too. Thank you for the advice, and thank Papa for his."
"Will do. Talk to you soon."
"Okay, bye Dad." Shortly after he ended his call and slipped his phone in his pocket he turned around only to be met by Kurt standing there. "What do you want?"
"Still as polite as earlier I see."
"This is polite when it comes to you." Devon stated as he took a step closer to him. "So I will repeat myself, what do you want?"
"I wanted to know if you and your little friends will be helping out again tomorrow, so I can be prepared." Kurt said to him.
"You could've asked any of us that question or for that matter the Berrys, why me given your visible dislike of me?"
"I don't dislike you Devon, I dislike your parents. Speaking of, are they still together?"
"Yes, and they're still deeply in love with one another." Devon replied. "Bet that must suck to hear. That all these years later their love for one another has only grown. So much for it being only a hook-up almost thirty years ago." As he spoke, Kurt's expression changed. "Yea, I heard all about it."
"Your Dads aren't innocent."
"They've never portrayed themselves in that way. You see, they're firm believers in sharing the mistakes they've made with us so that me and my sisters don't make the same ones."
"And Sebastian's got plenty of them."
"You're an ass."
"And you're disrespectful, but that was expected given who your parents are."
"You don't know my parents! You didn't know them then and you sure as hell don't know who they are now!" Devon snapped back at him as the guys closed in around them. "Seriously, do you have no life that you've had to hold this grudge against my parents for so long?"
"It's a two-way street."
"Actually, it's not. You see, unless they're bringing up something from their past up for teaching purposes, you're never mentioned." Devon told him. "My Dads have more important things in their life, so they don't dwell in the past."
"Yet all of you boys attend Dalton, following in their footsteps."
"We attend Dalton by choice. Us attending Dalton has nothing to do with dwelling in the past. What part of us attending by choice, do you not understand?" Devon then ran his fingers through his hair. "Why the hell am I even doing this, you're not worth my time." Just as he went to walk away, Kurt grabbed ahold of his arm causing him to pull it back. "Don't you ever fucking touch me again!"
"You never answered my question."
"Go to hell!"
"Blaine would be ashamed if he heard you right now."
"Trust me, my Dad would understand considering I'm dealing with you. He said as much just now when we spoke since he knows how infuriating you can be. And that speaks volumes considering my Dad's a shrink." Devon said to him. "Need I remind you, you're supposed to be the adult here, yet you're the one acting like a child, engaging the supposedly evil son of your high school adversaries?"
"Excuse me?"
"Word gets back to me. Did you really think you could get away saying what you did to the Berrys and I wouldn't find out? They weren't the only ones there, Jacob was there, Liam…I could go on but that would be excessive. So how about you do us all a favor, and leave?"
"I'm not done sorting the wardrobe."
"Then get back to it and leave us alone."
"You really are arrogant."
"So be it, I'm not going to apologize for who I am. Whether you approve or not, really doesn't matter. The only opinions I care about are those of my family." Devon then walked around him till he was before his friends. "That shouldn't be a news to you, because from what I know, your opinion rarely ever mattered."
"You're a bastard, just like your father!"
"I'll be sure to let him know." Devon said proudly before shooting him a wink. "He'll be happy to hear it. Later Hummel!" Before he even turned to walk away, Kurt was responding to him in a way that didn't surprise any of them, yet were thrilled that Devon wasn't getting pulled back into thing. Easy as it would've been to pull him away earlier, they knew Devon needed to speak his peace. And as long as things didn't turn violent, they let things play out.
"Did you purposely rile him up?" Theo asked as they head back towards the stage.
"I might've, but can any of you really blame me?"
"Not really." Jacob said to him. "You had a good point in that him being the adult, he should've stayed away from you."
"I think part of him wanted to know just how much like my Dads I really am."
"Well, you gave him a good idea." Tyler told him. "I don't know if I would've been able to keep my composure as well as you did."
"I almost lost it a few times, but then realized that if he had to confront me to try and make himself feel better about himself, it wasn't worth it. Nor was I going to allow him to play victim."
"He's still going to." Max replied.
"Probably, but there isn't anything I can do about it. And if one thinks about it, he knew damn well what he was risking talking to me. After all he said it himself, like father, like son so the results shouldn't have been shocking." Devon then glanced back over his shoulder where Kurt was now speaking with the Berrys, no doubt telling them how poorly he spoke to them. And for them, it had to be a case of déjà vu all over again.
