An Easy Job It Should Have Been
The story of a pillager doing his duty to his outpost, going where the villagers had led his patrol- to the depths of the feared Nether.

He could see the brown robes of the villagers ahead, could hear them panicking among themselves. He could hear his own patrol's quick footsteps, their own eager shouts, and the loading of their crossbows. He, too, prepared an arrow.

They'd been at this for hours, and now they were finally closing in on their targets. The elements of the harsh environment- the Nether- had diminished the villagers' numbers severely. Out of the twenty that had entered the cursed lands, only nine or ten remained.

An easy job indeed. Or so it should have been...if it weren't for the piglins.

The zombified pig-beasts had come from nowhere, blocking the view of the pillagers' targets. The creatures were so close together that each patrol member could scarcely breath in fresh air.

The pillager and his patrol, bloody-thirsty, were too impatient to wait for the piglins to move. So they did what they did best- they tried to shoot the villagers in between them. Not long after the firing broke out, a horrible screech filled the air; one of the piglins had been shot.

The others, the others were enraged by this. This was their home and now foreigners had shot their tribe member. They hefted up their mighty golden swords and advanced quickly upon the small pillager patrol.

The pillager, he couldn't believe it when the first of his patrol members disappeared in a puff of smoke, his crossbow floating where he had last been. He quickly loaded his bow and did his best to defend himself- but it didn't matter.

There were too many, and he couldn't prepare to fire fast enough.

Pain pierced his shoulders and he hissed in pain, but it was quickly over. The swords of the angry piglins delivered a few powerful blows to the pillager, and soon all that remained of the patrol were a few puffs of white smoke and a single crossbow, eternally floating as remembrance of the battle that should have never been.
