"Is it weird that I don't remember the name of the city where I was born? "
"You said that you came to Destiny Island when you were little, right?"
"Yeah...but sometimes I feel weird about it…"
"You're not being teased by the others are you? I'll beat them up for you!"
"No…it's nothing like that I just feel like…I'm missing something…or something is missing me…does that make sense?"
"I suppose so? Is this about the dreams that you were having?"
"Yeah…they seem so real but I don't know who she is,"
"Mitsu?"
"…."
"Hell-o Mitsu~"
"…."
"This is Sora on Destiny Island calling Mitsu. Do you hear me Mitsu?"
With a soft whimper, Mitsu slowly opened her eyes and used her arms to shield them from the bright sun shone down on golden sands of the beach of Destiny Island. With her eyes half-lidded she focused on the young teen that stood above her, his royal blue eyes curiously focused on her.
"Sora…what took you so long?" she asked.
"We didn't take too long…at least that I know of," Sora replied. "I'm surprised you're sleeping already it's not even the afternoon yet,"
"Honestly, I don't even know how or why I fell asleep…it just kind of happened," Mitsu replied as she sat up.
"I was gonna say…you're just as lazy as Riku," Sora grinned as he sat down next to the young teen.
"I dare you to say that to his face," Mitsu smirked.
"I'll pass," Sora laughed as he began to draw shapes in the sand.
Though the two were silent for a moment, Destiny Islands spoke for them. The cool breeze flowed through the island, through the foliage while the soft crashing of the nearly blue ocean waves crashed along the shore, a small heaven away from the mainland.
"Were you dreaming again?" Sora asked as he glanced at the oddly shaped necklace that hung around her neck.
"I think so? Maybe lucid dreaming or something," Mitsu trailed off.
"Is it…the same dream?" Sora asked almost hesitantly.
"…yeah," She replied, Sora stopped in mid drawn doodle.
For the past two weeks, Mitsu had told her friends about a strange dream that she had and she continued to have once a week. It always began in darkness, a voice called out to her and a man cloaked completely in black. There were no details she could make out about the man, his voice unfamiliar but his message was always the same.
It's your Destiny
She never understood what he meant but it always unsettled her, apprehension and hopelessness always washed over her and she would wake in right as the sun broke over the horizon with her cheeks stained with tears.
"Have you figured out anything about it?" Sora asked. Mitsu shook her head and sighed.
"No. I told my aunt about it, she said it should pass soon," Mitsu replied. Sora remained quiet for a moment before Mitsu spoke up.
"What about you? What about your dreams?" Mitsu asked.
"I dunno…they're just dreams my mom said," Sora shrugged and continued to draw random shapes in the sand.
Similar to Mitsu, Sora confided in her about the dreams that he had experienced and didn't know what to make of it. Despite the lack of meaning, the void of darkness always took him as his friends reached out to him to help but were always out of reach.
"Maybe its stress from the impending school semester," Mitsu sighed and leaned back into the sand her arms behind her head.
"Oh c'mon! We're barely one week into summer break and you're already talking about school!" Sora huffed and poked the teen in the ribs. Mitsu yelped and smacked Sora in the shoulder, the two laughed. A short lull settled between the two before Sora spoke up again.
"You know you never told where you got that necklace from," Sora said pointing at her necklace. Mitsu instinctively touched the oddly shaped necklace, the necklace was something that had been with her since she could remember, but who had given it to her had been lost to her memories.
"I don't remember but I know that I've had it for a long time," Mitsu replied as her fingertips ran over the metal. The general shape of the necklace was simple but with jagged edges, it had the shape of a heart but the inner lines crossed inside of the heart and the tail of the heart crossed as well. The edges looked jagged almost sharp to the touch, but she wore the necklace without any issue or concern.
"That's a bummer. It's cool looking," Sora said as he sat cross-legged in the sand, his attention now on the open ocean.
"Are the others awake?" Mitsu asked as she sat up and stretched.
"Kairi is eating breakfast and I don't know about Riku, he could be sleeping still," Sora replied and turned towards their little dock. Only Sora's and Mitsu's boats were docked there, in an hour or so there would be more.
"You should go wake him up," Sora said as he stood up.
"I was planning on it...since you're banned from his room," Mitsu stood as began to cautiously dust herself off, in an attempt to not get sand into the boy's eyes.
"He'd probably kill me if I set foot in his room while he's sleeping again," A grin spread from ear to ear on the teen's face. Mitsu giggled as she thought back to what exactly got the boy banned from the older boy's room.
"That's because you scared the crap outta him with your psychotic moose doll thing,"
"Ok, so it's not mine, I found it. And you should have been there," Sora began as he began to laugh. "His scream was so high pitched!"
"You know he would deny it ever happening," Mitsu replied and laughed.
"It was PRICELESS, Mitsu. He can pretend to forget but I will NEVER forget it," Sora laughed.
Since summer break had begun nearly two weeks ago, Kairi, Mitsu, Riku, Sora and the others would meet at Destiny Island and hang out for the rest of the day. Pranks on one another were a common thing but Sora had decided to deliver a special wake up call to the older white haired boy, needless to say Riku banned the boy from ever entering his room. Sora had learned the hard way not to pull a prank on the girl, a coconut to the face was all he needed to learn.
"Ok I'll go get him," Mitsu said.
"Sounds like a plan, I'll meet you guys on the other side," Sora said as he pointed at the island across from them. Mitsu nodded and took off to her boat and to the main island to wake up the older boy.
Knock! Knock!
Seconds later the door opened revealing a tall, slim white-haired woman with a gentle and warm smile, it was Riku's mother.
"Good morning," Mitsu said as she smiled. The woman smiled as she ushered Mitsu to the home.
"Good morning Mitsu, I suppose you're on wake up duty right?" She asked with a knowing smile, Mitsu nodded.
"Yep," Mitsu replied with a smile as she glanced around the home.
"Perhaps that's a good thing instead of taking a few years off of Riku's life by scaring him half to death," Riku's mother gave a small laugh, Mitsu giggled. "You know where to find him,"
Mitsu thanked the woman as she watched her disappear into the kitchen. Mitsu made her way up to the second floor of the quaint home and to Riku's room. She quietly opened the door to the older teen's room and peeked inside. The room was always spotless, dim and cool despite the warmth of the sun that bathed the island constantly.
Cautiously not to wake Riku, Mitsu made her way over to the dark curtains and opened flung them open bathing the room in sunlight. A groan came from the teen's bed.
"RISE AND SHINE RIKU!" Mitsu yelled as she continued to fling the curtains open until every window in the room had been opened. Riku jumped awake and quickly shielded his eyes with the nearest thing he could grab, his pillow and blanket.
"I said RISE AND SHINE Riku," Mitsu repeated herself as she stood at the end of the boy's bed. Riku's grunt was muffled by the pillow and blanket he used to shield his head from the sun's rays. With a frown, Mitsu huffed and moved to the side of the bed yanked the pillow from him, she promptly whacked him with it.
"Uhn!" Riku grunted.
"C'mon!" Mitsu yelled as she held his pillow above her head ready to hit him again. Riku held up his hand trying to block the pillow.
"Ok! Ok! I'm up. I'm up…don't hit me," Riku said as he slowly sat up.
"Good," Mitsu said and smiled. She tossed the pillow on his bed, then walked over to the balcony doors and opened them.
"What time is it? Did I oversleep?" Riku asked as he stared at Mitsu groggily.
"You did, everyone is at the island waiting for you," Mitsu replied and looked at him from the balcony doors. Riku looked at Mitsu, and she at him. After a few moments, Mitsu crossed her arms.
"Are you going to get dressed or are we going to have a staring contest?" Mitsu asked.
Riku stared at the girl silently for a few moments later before a large yawn came from him.
"I'm getting, I'm getting," Riku murmured as he got up and headed to the bathroom.
"Hurry up! We don't have all day," Mitsu shouted after the older teen.
"Well excuse ME, your majesty," Riku called back.
After her small boat was secure Kairi made her way onto Destiny Island and casually made her way over to the hut when she realized a person sprawled out on the beach.
It was Sora.
"Hey Sora," Kairi called as she walked over to the teen and quickly found out that he was asleep. With a sigh, she nudged the boy with her foot, he didn't move. The young teen leaned over and flicked the boy in the nose, jolting the sleeping teen awake.
"Ow! What was that for?" Sora yelped as his eyes shot open and focused on his assailant. An innocent smile was plastered on the redhead's face as she peered down at the teen she flicked him in the forehead.
"OW! Kairi! What the heck was that for?" Sora asked while rubbing his forehead.
"You sir are sleeping on the job," Kairi replied with a small giggle.
"Sleeping on the job? Mitsu and Riku aren't even here yet!" Sora protested.
"Uh-huh," Kairi replied.
"He's a natural born slacker," Riku said as he walked towards Kairi and Sora.
"Says that person that overslept," Mitsu commented underhandedly as she stood next to Riku.
"Hey-" Riku started. Sora huffed at the three that stood near him before he quickly got to his feet and dusted the sand from his shorts.
"You all took too long. I got bored," Sora replied as he looked at his friends.
"Natural born slacker indeed," Kairi said and walked towards the hut, Riku chuckled and followed Kairi.
"Come on Sora. Let's go," Mitsu smiled as patted the younger teen on the back before she too started to their hut.
"You guys suck," Sora huffed and followed his friends.
As the group made their way into their hut they began to plan out their day. Weeks ago the group agreed to explore past the golden sands of Mainland and Destiny Island, it started as a dream that quickly caught on by the others and soon they were all working towards building a raft to fit all of them. Their curiosity burst at the seams of what rested outside of the calm and sleepy like town where they resided.
"We're almost done with the raft right?" Mitsu asked as she looked at the drawings of a really simple raft but it was enough to fit all of them.
"For the most part. There's just a few things that need to be finished and it should be done," Riku replied and held out his hand for the drawing.
"I finished the sail yesterday," Mitsu chimed in as she patted the neatly folded sail on the table.
"Since we're so close to finishing the raft we should look for other necessities...you know like food and stuff," Kairi commented, the group nodded in agreement.
"Sounds like a plan, let's continue to work on the raft Riku," Sora smirked, Riku nodded in agreement.
"Alright, Mitsu we can gather the other things while the guys do all of the hard work," Kairi said.
"Sounds like a plan," Mitsu replied.
Before they split off to do their work they confirmed once more of their tasks. Sora and Riku were to finish the last pieces of the raft, while Mitsu and Kairi gathered food and tools for their journey. On their quest for food, the two girls searched the native foliage for nuts, berries and more. Their first task, Coconuts.
"Since you can climb trees let's get some coconuts," Kairi said. Mitsu laughed.
"What about you? I know you can climb trees too," Mitsu added.
"I didn't say I couldn't climb trees, I just know that you can do it better than I can," Kairi said sheepishly. Mitsu placed her hands on her hips and sighed as she looked at the younger teen.
"Can I at least throw them at people?" Mitsu joked as she turned to the tree in front of them. She quickly sized up the tree.
"I think I can name at least two people you can start with," Kairi replied with a smirk. Mitsu gave the younger red haired teen a smirk before she began to climb the tree.
Soft crimson and oranges stained the skies above Destiny Island as gentle waves washed against the golden sands and brought along followed by a warm tranquil breeze that enveloped the island. The group had busied themselves with their tasks for their upcoming adventure and soon found themselves at the large Paopu fruit tree, tired but nonetheless excited.
"We finished the raft," Riku yawned as he focused on the ocean waters that reflected the concoction of oranges, reds, indigoes that stained the sky above.
"That means that this will be our last sunset...here…" Kairi trailed off, she knew what was to come tomorrow.
"I'm sure we will see better sunsets while we're out there," Mitsu added, Sora nodded.
"Which also means that we cherish this sunset even more," Sora added with a cheeky smile. The four teenagers nodded in agreement and continued to watch the sunset in silence, enjoying each other's company. Though they were exhausted from the work they completed for their adventure, they were excited for what was to come tomorrow.
Mitsu and Kairi had arrived to the island when they were younger but did not remember the journey to the island, where as Sora and Riku's curiosity of what lies beyond the island fueled them to accomplishing their childhood dream of exploring outside of the islands.
"Hey Riku," Sora started breaking the silence between the group.
"Yeah?" Riku replied.
"You know, I never got my rematch," Sora began as he looked down at the older teen from the Paopu fruit tree root.
"Heh, you're just gonna lose again Sora," Riku smirked as he looked up at Sora.
"We'll see about that!" Sora scowled at his friend's cockiness. Although the white haired teen was right, he currently held the most wins against Sora or anyone on the island.
"I wanna spar too," Mitsu said as she looked over her shoulder at the two boys. At that moment Kairi slid off the root and began to run towards the beach.
"Last one there fights last not including me!" Kairi yelled as she ran towards the hut.
"H-Hey!" Sora yelled. After the words left the girl's mouth, Mitsu quickly darted around Riku and the root and beelined for Kairi, Riku was right behind her.
"H-HEY You jerks!" Sora shouted as he quickly chased after his friends.
Within a few seconds the teenagers were, on the beach, out of breath but primed and ready to spar. After they caught their breaths, Mitsu and Riku both had wooden swords in their hands and were staring each other down. The winner of the race was clear as the two began to circle each other. Normally it was just Riku and Sora that sparred with their wooden swords against each other, but ever since they met the blue haired teen and befriended her, she participated in their playful sparring as much as they would let her.
"Go!" Kairi yelled. Sora sat cross legged on the beach with a pout on his lips as he watched the eldest of his friends spar.
"This sucks!" Sora pouted.
Riku dashed at Mitsu and effortlessly swiped horizontally at the girl, she, in turn, copied the white-haired teen's movement but in opposite and effectively avoided his swipe. She moved almost as quickly as the teen and retaliated with an upwards swiped that nearly caught Riku under his chin. Riku jumped back and quickly charged forward, Mitsu followed and charged as well. Their wooden swords clacked against each other. Riku pushed back, Mitsu also pushed back.
"Seems like you've gotten stronger Mitsu. I'm surprised," Riku teased.
"Just because you're taller doesn't mean you're stronger, Riku," Mitsu teased back. Riku smirked and Mitsu grinned.
"You wanna test that theory?" Riku goaded
"I'll prove you wrong," Mitsu replied. With a grunt of exertion, the two jumped back and began to circle one another again.
"Wow, Mitsu has gotten a lot better. She's going to give you a run for your munny Sora," Kaira giggled as she continued to watch the two spar.
"No way! If I can beat Riku then I can beat her too," Sora protested.
"If you can beat him," Kairi grinned from ear to ear.
"Don't look at me like that Kairi, you're supposed to be on my side," Sora huffed.
Riku smirked and charged at Mitsu again, Mitsu stood in a defensive stance as Riku rushed towards her, he swiped at her again she spun around him dodging the attack, he quickly turned around to retaliate but saw Mitsu's weapon at his neck. For the first time, she had bested him.
"Mitsu wins!" Kairi announced the winner excitedly.
"No way…she beat Riku before me," Sora sighed and fell back into the sand with disbelief.
Riku stood silently and placed a hand on his hip as he looked at the girl in front of him. He swiped the air a few times with his wooden sword before he smirked at the girl.
"Good job. You're not all bark but you bite back unlike someone we know," Riku said with a smirk.
"HEY!" Sora shouted. "I'M RIGHT HERE!"
"Well sometimes you gotta handle yourself and I did," Mitsu replied with a nonchalant shrug. Riku laughed.
"Stop being cocky Mitsu!" Kairi laughed.
Without warning Riku was tackled into the water, leaving Mitsu confused and weapon-less. Mitsu looked at Sora who was on top of Riku with the wooden sword she previously had in her hand.
"Wow…I didn't know he could move like that. His feelings must be hurt," Kairi commented as she casually walked over to Mitsu.
"How could you let her beat you? I was supposed to beat you!" Sora yelled at Riku.
"Well you lost your chance," Riku said as he stood knee deep in water.
"UGH! Come on let's go! You're going to lose twice today!" Sora yelled as he held his sword pointing it at Riku.
"You can try!" Riku yelled and charged at Sora.
20 minutes later and two fights later Kairi and Sora watched at Mitsu angrily stomped away from the group and also watched as Riku followed after her with her necklace in his hands.
"UGH! Riku you suck!" Mitsu yelled as she stormed away to the other side of the Paopu fruit Island.
"Hey! Wait I didn't mean to-" Riku called after her as he followed.
"He's in trouble...big time," Sora said as he watched the two disappear to the other side of the island.
"Of course he is...that necklace is special to her...I don't know why you dare him to do it. What if he could have broken it?" Kairi chided.
"Hey. I didn't know if he was actually going to do it," Sora replied. "It was a dare and you know how Riku is-"
"He's like the older brother of the group and he's not going to back down in front of you Sora," Kairi sighed heavily and crossed her arms.
"I..I guess so…" Sora trailed off.
"Look I said I'm sorry," Riku sighed as he followed after the upset girl.
"Mitsu c'mon," Riku said as he stood on the other side of the large leaf that she used to avoid him.
"Here...at least let me put it on you," Riku sighed. After a few moments of silence Mitsu stepped from behind the foliage, arms crossed a pout still on her lips.
"I wanted to say sorry but you kept walking," Riku began, Mitsu huffed in response to the teen's attempted apology. Riku sighed softly as he cautiously placed the necklace around her neck and latched it. "I know I shouldn't have done that...this necklace is special to you and I apologize,"
"Do you forgive me?" Riku asked as he stepped back from the girl just in case she decided to throw a punch.
"Fine, but if you do it again I will punch you in the face," Mitsu replied as her fingertips touched the necklace.
"At that point I think I deserve it," Riku chuckled and slightly turned his attention to the darkened sky above. Mitsu followed his movement and looked to the sky as well.
"Sora told me that you were still having those dreams…" Riku began.
"Yeah...they've been consistent lately…" Mitsu trailed off. She purposely avoided mentioning her dreams to Riku as she figured he would think of her dreams being silly. She didn't want to be seen as young and immature in his eyes despite her admiration for him.
"Does any of it seem familiar to you at all?" Riku asked as he looked at her. Mitsu looked at the teen cautiously before she replied, she couldn't tell if he was humoring her or being seriously interested in her dreams.
"N-No...why are you-" Mitsu replied.
"I haven't told anyone yet but I've been having dreams too," Riku began. "I didn't want to seem as if I've suddenly had these dreams but I started having them around the time we started to build the raft," Riku continued.
Mitsu looked at the teen quietly, the group had planned their adventure while they were still in school and that's when Mitsu's dreams began. Based on when Sora told her that his dreams started she figured the two teen's dreams began around the same time as one another.
One week after her.
"What kind of dreams are you having?" Mitsu asked. Riku looked to the ground and motioned her to walk with him back to the others.
