Sword, Shield, and Shadow
Flame Princess was sure that her consciousness returned shortly after her body impulsively sat up and stretched a bit, which felt quite strange. She'd never made a habit of sleepwalking. However, considering the odd wake up call, she realized she was no longer in the library. Looking down at herself, she found that she was lying atop her bed, having never pulled the covers up. Luckily, it had been a very warm night and the blanket was unnecessary.
On the other hand, the question of how in Ooo she'd gotten all the way to her room with no memory was the real mystery. The last thing she could remember was playing the piano with Finn, which she assumed was the point where the king had fallen asleep due to sheer exhaustion. Her conclusion was that the young man had carried her back and left her on the bed to rest.
Smiling, both at that prospect and at the activity from the previous night, FP yawned and swung her legs over to the ground in order to prepare for the morning routine. However, she was interrupted by the sight of something leaning against her bed, startling her.
It was Finn.
"Eek!"
Flame princess jumped back, nearly tumbling over her mattress entirely. Her face grew red fairly quickly, while she remained absolutely still, watching intently. The flame human's breathing was gentle and his head hung, indicating he was not awake. A bit more secure, FP crawled back to the edge of the bed for a better look. Regardless of the awkward situation, she couldn't help but notice how peaceful Finn's features looked.
His eyes seemed to be in mediation rather than sleep, his mouth shaped into a flat line to show neither distress nor giddiness. His flaming golden hair was flopped down, framing his cheeks and making him look rather, cute. FP blushed harder then shook her head, trying to focus. Suddenly, the hero mumbled in his sleep.
"Nnnnn… chill dude, Meat Man's not gonna get you. Go- go back to sleeeee…."
He was out, leaving a confused Flame Princess.
Meat Man? What the heck is that?
Ignoring the strange subconscious comment from her knight, FP finally stood up, instantly spotting a large curled up mass at the foot of her bed. Jake 2 was snoring quietly there, lost in his own dreams likely. Frowning, FP looked back at Finn, noticing two small rips near the neck of his shirt. She then placed a hand on her own attire, feeling the same type of damage in the same place.
She grinned, amused. Careful to avoid stepping on Finn's legs, the fiery girl made her way over to the fire wolf and knelt down by his furry face. She placed a hand on his neck and shook slightly.
"Hey, wake up, JT."
The wolf snarled in his sleep for a second, then cracked open an eye, whizzing it around until he sighted Flame princess and lifted his whole head up to face her, panting happily. The king couldn't help but smile wider.
"So, you carried us back here, big guy?"
She scratched behind his ear, while Jake 2 made a few canine noises in acknowledgement. Flame princess motioned to Finn.
"But why'd you bring Fen in here?"
She felt shy asking that question, even though she was talking to an animal. In response however, JT stood up on his four powerful legs and used his head to nudge FP closer to the resting flame human. She resisted, arguing for the wolf to cut it out. Finn seemed to shift slightly from all the noise. Flame Princess panicked, knowing it would be even more awkward for him to wake up in her room while she was still in it. The fiery royal looked hard at Jake 2.
"Can you please take him to his room?"
The wolf nodded slightly, along with a low whine, indicating he understood. Stepping over to Finn, he gently grabbed the young man in his maw and swiftly swung him over, landing the unconscious hero on his back.
"Careful!" FP insisted.
JT just showed his teeth, which she swore was a grin, and turned to leave, pushing the door open and disappearing into the corridor. Flame Princess let out a breath, relieved that that was over, and more importantly, that Finn wouldn't know it ever happened. About to finally begin her morning prep, the young lady was once again interrupted by rapid footsteps from down the hall.
Ugh, what now?
Surprisingly, it was Cinnamon Bun who appeared in the doorway, nearly out of breath and holding an urgent face.
"…Flame… Princess. We need to go… now!"
The fiery ruler stepped forward, concern planted on her face.
"What is it, CB. What's going on?"
The knight frowned.
"I'll explain on the way. Please, get ready and meet me down by the entrance. I've sent a servant to wake up Fen and have him meet us there as well. In the meantime, I'm going to find Jake 2."
He burst down the hall again before Flame Princess had the chance to say anything else. She hurriedly put on her royal armor, preparing for the worst. In addition, she hoped JT would return Finn to his quarters before the palace servant reached it, otherwise it would just be another strange event to explain.
Jake 2 soared across the ashen skies, holding tight to the course his master had laid out for the fire wolf to follow. Cinnamon Bun had already spoken to Flame Princess about the situation before Finn had arrived, leaving the two of them to fill him in on the issue. The young man was still a bit drowsy, having woken up lying upside down against his bed, as if someone had thrown him into his room and not had time to place him properly on the mattress.
Cracking his sore neck, the flame human began his inquiry.
"So what exactly is happening?"
FP stared bitterly at their destination, which was slowly coming into view.
"The Fire Kingdom has its fair share of criminals. Of these, none are worse than the Olympians."
Finn raised an eyebrow.
"Olympians?"
FP nodded.
"They're a gang of dangerous fire elementals with unique powers foreign to our kind. In their infinite arrogance, they named themselves after some ancient deities lost to history."
Finn nodded, pondering over the briefing.
"So how do you beat them?" he asked.
Flame Princess sighed.
"I- I don't know."
Her knight was a bit stunned.
"What? Then how have you ever stopped them?"
FP looked back at the flame human direly.
"I haven't. None of us have. They accomplish what they need much sooner than we can ever attempt to stop them."
She bit her lip.
"That's how bad they are. But this time, they seem to have gotten more confrontational."
Finn felt a twinge of intimidation, but shook it off in favor of confidence. He gave a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry, we'll get them this time."
Flame Princess somehow found the courage to smile back. Her protector's expression was just so comforting she couldn't help it. It was the same feeling as when Finn used to encourage her, like the times she believed herself an evil being wrought with nothing but destruction.
Suddenly, a flash streaked across the sky, forcing Jake 2 to dodge to the right. However, Flame Princess fell off in the process.
"FP!" both CB and Finn shouted.
The flame human drew back his arm, allowing his lava vine to lengthen extensively before hurling the now lasso formed utility downward, where it swiftly tied itself around Flame Princess's waist. With a sturdy arc motion, Finn swung her around and back on top of JT, whereupon she calmed herself and thanked her guard. However, Finn was confused.
"I don't understand. Why didn't you just fly?"
FP frowned again, staring down.
"Ever since ingesting that poison from my father's last attempt at escape I've never been able to regain total stability of my powers. I can still hover, but flying long distances is almost impossible."
She sighed.
"I don't want to worry the people, so I don't tell them about it."
At that, Finn was definitely confused.
"But, isn't that keeping a secret?"
Flame Princess and Cinnamon Bun exchanged glances momentarily.
"You really haven't been in the Fire Kingdom long, have you?"
The young man shook his head.
"The original rule was childish and immature, based only upon my personal experiences. Eventually, I understood the need for common privacy. White lies and withheld information for the good of others are accepted, it is only the grievous truth breakers that are scolded."
The knight scratched his head.
"How do you tell the difference?"
FP smirked a bit.
"Guilt can be a strong persuader."
The fiery girl noticed her protector frown at that sentence, turning his face away from her and staring out into the open landscape below. She was about to ask what was wrong, but was interrupted by another flash, which Jake 2 avoided once again. This time, everyone managed to hold on.
"What are those things?!" Finn shouted in astonishment.
Yet again, a flash attempted to skewer JT. By this point, the giant wolf was beginning to descend to the land below, which Finn noticed was a reservoir of lava, held back by a solid dam of igneous rock. He also noticed several dozen flame guards lying on their backs, seemingly unconscious or unable to continue moving. Finally, he spotted three glowing figures standing among the fallen troops, all of which were staring right at him and his companions.
JT landed cleanly, allowing the group to jump off and finally face the trio of elementals who were left standing. It was clear they weren't military. They didn't look any different from your average fire elemental, other than the usual one-of-a-kind distinctions in physical construction. The one at the head was smirking viciously at them as they took a few steps closer.
"Darn, looks like I missed," he spoke sarcastically.
He raised his hand, suddenly causing a flurry of sparks and what seemed to be electricity to form in his palm. Flame Princess glared at him, producing flames in her fists.
"Zeus."
The criminal chuckled.
"A pleasure to see you again, your majesty."
FP threw up her hands.
"It'll be the last time, you filth!"
A stream of powerful flames was shot at the head gangster, who simply grinned and used his energized hand to smack the fire away, dissipating it in a flurry of embers.
"Tsk, tsk, your highness. You know that doesn't work."
FP growled, urging CB to hold her back. He and Finn got into defensive stances, while their king reluctantly did the same.
"So these are the guys?" Finn asked, eyeing each elemental individually.
Flame Princess nodded.
"Yes. That's their leader, Zeus. He can superheat the air around him, which he then fires like lightning."
She shifted her gaze, spotting one of the other villains, who had an amused face similar to Zeus.
"The one to his left is Poseidon. Unlike most fire elementals, he can't conjure fire. But, he can take mental control of any lava nearby, even if it's underground."
Finn nervously glanced at the massive lava lake merely a few dozen feet away from them.
"The last one is Hades. Basically, he animates volcanic rock to form whatever kind of minion he needs, whether it be a golem, a foot soldier, you name it. Luckily, their intelligence is pitiful, much like zombies, making it easy to outdo them. It's the sheer numbers that make it difficult."
Now understanding the scope of what they were dealing with, Finn felt much more prepared to deal with the threats. On the other hand, these were indeed very dangerous individuals. As the three steadied themselves, Flame Princess tried to get some answers.
"What are you doing here?" she demanded.
Zeus smirked again, then looked over at the dam.
"It's time we moved on from petty crimes and thieveries. The moment has arrived where we shall take our rightful place in this world, as rulers!"
CB joined his king in glaring at the trio.
"You're insane."
Zeus smiled without worry, then looked back and nodded to his two companions. They stepped up to join their leader, burning brighter in readiness for a fight. At the same time, the opposing side was strategizing. FP kept her eyes glued on them as she spoke with her team.
"CB, you're the best at knocking around large objects. Hades' minions should be no trouble for you."
The bun nodded and acknowledged.
"I'll deal with Poseidon. All I have to do is dodge his lava and strike back hard."
She paused.
"Fen. Can you take Zeus with your speed?"
Finn eyed the leader carefully, observing as he casually threw around the volatile substance his powers could create. The man's confidence was bloated, but there was likely truth to his ability to use his power effectively.
"Yeah."
FP nodded one last time.
"I'm counting on you two."
"And we you," Cinnamon Bun responded.
With that, the three split off, charging separately at their enemies. Zeus ordered his allies to break off, while he instantly aimed for Finn. The flame human reacted on instinct, sliding to avoid the blast of superheated material and increasing his speed towards the foe. His lava vine sword formed up, swinging upwards to deliver an uppercut to Zeus' chest.
The fire elemental grabbed the blade with his bare hand.
Finn's eyes were stuck open, unmoving from Zeus and his disinterested gaze. The villain tilted his head slightly as he began to drastically increase the lava vine's temperature.
"Was that the best you had?"
Cinnamon Bun's lance smashed another golem to pieces, but was met only by two more in its place. He cursed, then threw his weapon straight through one of the creature's heart, eliminating it. Jumping onto the beast, its rocky body fell, giving CB the momentum to retrieve his lance and bound ahead to close the distance to Hades.
Surprisingly, for one who could summon cannon fodder, the vile elemental was actually going right for close combat with the knight, producing a flame sword and jumping onto a volcanic steed. CB was forced to throw himself out of the way as he came charging down the line, lest risk losing his head to the elevated enemy.
A howl suddenly broke the air, followed by many chunks of volcanic minions flying through the air. Cinnamon Bun turned to see what the commotion was, only to smile gratefully as Jake 2 bashed aside another golem. The fire wolf devoured the heads of several rock zombies, then chewed up the pieces and spat them at the surrounding targets, blasting them apart. Spotting his master, JT bounded up and tucked, throwing CB onto his back.
Hades screeched to a halt and turned, steadying his steed as his other minions paused to watch. A straight line was present between the two riders, who stared each other down from several dozen yards. Hades grew his sword into a flaming lance, lowering it to point directly at Cinnamon Bun's heart.
"After this, I'm going to reanimate your ashes and have them kill your precious king."
CB glared at the foe and pointed his lance as well.
"Not a chance, you psycho."
Jake 2 pawed the ground, preparing to run. The volcanic steed did the same, kicking at the black dirt with its hooves and snorting. The two animals looked right into each other's eyes, acknowledging the challenge. At last, they took off. Jake 2 bashed his way effortlessly through the igneous zombies on his way to Hades. The fire elemental didn't seem to care about doing the same, crushing his own soldiers beneath his steed's feet.
At the two neared, CB gripped his lance hard, narrowed his eyes, and grinded his teeth. For the sake of everything, he could not die here. The two jousters closed the gap, each intent on staying firmly on their mounts. As the clash commenced, Cinnamon Bun put all his faith in his loyal hound and the steel in his hand.
Hades' horse grinded to a halt, panting from the strenuous charge. Jake 2 did the same. Both opponents were now faced away from each other, adrenaline slowing their perception of time. Suddenly, all the volcanic zombies disintegrated, except for Hades' steed. The fire elemental grinned thoughtfully.
"Not bad, bun."
Sizzling commenced as magma blood dripped down from his wound. The horse fell to the ground, but he managed to jump off and land on his feet, holding a hand to his injury. Finally, he retreated, falling back to the far side of the reservoir. Cinnamon Bun was still on Jake 2, tense and unmoving. Soon, a sizzling emerged at JT's feet as well, only this blood instantly turned from a creamy white to black, scorched instantly by the kingdom's environment.
"Darn," CB choked, slumping off of his wolf and to his knees.
Jake 2 whined and kept close to his master, worried of his condition. The candy person smiled and patted his loyal pet's head.
"Good boy."
The splash from Flame Princess's fall didn't cause any real harm, but definitely placed her in a dangerous situation. Poseidon had finally been able to swat her out of the sky. Now in his domain, FP had little chance of escaping the lake. A whirlpool was quickly generated, halting the fiery girl's ascension to the surface. She struggled and groaned, trying to blast her way out with her flames. However, the thick lava was much too dense to allow any significant propulsion, especially with Poseidon's control over the molten rock.
Taking the time to think, she came up with her only option. Gathering together her power, Flame Princess began to expand, using the heat being produced around her to accelerate the act. Eventually, she felt the bottom of the lake, now beginning to rise closer to the surface; fortuitous considering she was at her limit of holding her breath.
Breaking through to the open air, she took in a massive amount of oxygen, but urgently turned to find Poseidon, knowing he'd be waiting to counterattack. A tsunami of lava was heading right for FP, briefly startling the king but not enough to make her forget to block. She took the blunt force of the hit on her shoulder, cleaving the wave in half and reducing the damage.
Raising a giant fiery first, Flame Princess was ready to pummel Poseidon into the lake with her attack. Sadly, the elemental was already prepared, commanding a snake-like hose of molten rock to suppress her approach. She used her hands as best she could to guard against the strike, but was pushed back all the way to the dam. Seeing that the ruler had nowhere to go, Poseidon created a surge to throw her over the edge of the wall.
"Goodbye, your highness," he snarled.
The wave came at her full force, intending to slap her towering form and cause a major blow. However, instead of trying to stop it, FP placed her hands into the lava and concentrated. Poseidon's determined face switched to bewilderment as his attack began to falter. The lava wave was slowing, while at the same time shrinking. The lake was beginning to dim, forcing him to remove himself from it and get to shore before he was stuck there.
Steam rose as the rock solidified, letting out both sizzles and cracking noises that signified the body's forced inactivity.
"Wh- what is this?" Poseidon demanded.
He looked up, stunned to see an incredibly bright Flame princess panting on the ground. She was on her hands and knees, trying hard not to pass out. With great effort, she held up her hand, aiming at the opponent, who gasped.
A single, solid stream of nearly white-hot flames burst from the young lady, streaking across the heat-deprived lake and heading straight for Poseidon. All the foe could do was attempt to dodge the attack, but he only succeeded in shifting the area of impact. In an instant, the vile being's left arm was completely incinerated.
"AHHH!"
Poseidon took a knee, grinding his teeth as he conjured a mass of lava to plug up his critical wound.
"Damn."
He looked up at FP, eyes dripping with malice.
"This isn't over."
He slowly stumbled away, eager to recover. Too exhausted to continue fighting, Flame Princess had no objections to ending the conflict. However, this break was cut short as a body was thrown violently into the hardened lava, skidding to a halt only after a few dozen feet.
"Fen!" FP shouted in worry.
The young man groaned as he got to his feet, holding his right wrist with his other hand. The lava vine was struggling to regenerate as smoke constantly seeped out of it. Finn himself was covered in numerous bruises and a few cuts. One particular slash went down from his shoulder, letting loose a significant portion of his blood.
Breathing heavily, Finn reformed his weapon, which immediately broke in half due to being weakened. Hopeless in using his currently damaged cursed arsenal, he resorted to raising his fists, while Zeus approached calmly towards him. The man did not look amused, glaring hard at the flame human as he came closer. Magma blood was running down from a wound somewhere on his head. Other than that, he had no other injuries.
"You wasted your one chance, kid. That 'shadowless thrust' of yours is powerful, but you misunderstood. If it couldn't kill me the first time, it will never hit me again."
He stopped, raising a hand to present a lob of superheated material.
"You use your flame powers to dash at incredible speed to perform it. However, if I can manipulate the temperature around me, I can nullify your flames and render the entire attack useless."
Finn bared his teeth at his enemy.
"As for that weird vine on your arm, it just can't compete with my raw power."
He resumed approaching.
"Face it, you're done."
He charged, preparing to fire his 'lightning' pointblank at Finn's head. The hero could find no way to avoid it. Cursing his failure to protect the kingdom, he simply stood there, tired and defenseless. As Zeus homed in, he let out a twisted smile upon readying his strike. As it came closer, the fire elemental was too focused on Finn to notice another being approach.
The only thing his hand hit was the surface of Cinnamon Bun's lance.
Shocked, Zeus had no time to correct his movements. CB held him back, putting all his remaining energy into preventing Finn's demise. Meanwhile, the flame human nearly fell over, only to be caught by Flame Princess. He looked into her eyes, caught off guard when he saw the anger and concern in them.
"You idiot!" she screamed.
Finn could say nothing. He simply listened and stared.
"Don't you dare die! You hear me? That is an order! Don't ever give up, don't ever stop moving."
She squeezed her eyes shut.
"Get up."
Finn did nothing.
"NOW!"
The young man felt his muscles burn as he did as commanded. Free of FP's support, he nodded that he was stable and stood on his own accord.
"Finish this, and we can go home."
Finn refocused on the enemy, who was just about to break CB's defense. The candy person was down on his knee by now, faltering fast. His wound wasn't making matters much better. That all changed when he heard someone from behind running towards him. Giving one last powerful shove, he forced Zeus back several feet, throwing off the foe's balance. He then leaned forward, allowing Flame Princess to run up his back and lunge at the fire elemental, whose eyes widened in surprise.
Zeus could do nothing as his layer of hardened volcanic hide was sliced through by FP's flame sword. However, while it was a definite hit, it was at the same time a failure. The cruel elemental smiled.
"Sorry, but you didn't quite make it to my flesh."
He prepared to roast both the king and Cinnamon Bun, charging up more matter. He never got to use it. Magma blood exploded from the spot on his chest that had been weakened, stunning him and causing that same liquid to leak from his mouth.
Finn stood by his companions, retracting his fully healed lava vine, which still had some of Zeus' blood on it.
"You might be able to negate the shadowless thrust…"
He glanced at the villain.
"But only if you're expecting it."
Zeus backed away, trying desperately to stop the bleeding. He stared hatefully at the trio, who, while exhausted from the fighting, was in better shape than his team. Speaking of which, Hades and Poseidon appeared by his side, helping their leader stand. It was then that the elemental smirked.
"A shield to hide your preparation, a sword to pierce the defenses, and a shadow to sneak in and deliver the finish. Impressive, I have to say. However, you underestimate us."
He looked to Hades, who nodded. The animator placed his hand on the stub that used to hold Poseidon's arm. The area stared glowing, while Hades conjured some of the nearby volcanic rock to fit into the missing limb's space. The rock suddenly ignited, filled with red veins of lava that brought the material to life. Finn, FP, and Cinnamon Bun stood astonished as Poseidon tested out the fingers on his new arm.
Hades next placed a hand on Zeus' chest, which began to glow as well, along with more material being added to plug up the injury. The cut on his head was also fixed. Hades had already healed himself, causing CB to wonder why he hadn't done so earlier. Fortunately, Zeus answered that for him.
"Sadly, he can't restore our energy, but hey, what's not to love."
He grinned slyly.
"We're practically immortal, like gods."
The elemental nodded to Poseidon, who responded by holding his hands out to the ground surrounding them.
"We'll be back, sooner than you know."
Those were Zeus' final words before a jet of lava erupted from the ground, consuming the three enemies. When the molten rock fell back to the floor, they were nowhere to be found. Flame Princess' group all gazed in despair at the empty space.
"All that, for nothing."
A slump drew her attention to Finn, who was now lying on the floor in a small pool of his magma blood.
"Fen!"
FP got down on her knees and shakily tried to stop his bleeding. She swung her head to face Cinnamon Bun.
"CB, go get help!"
The candy person showed no objections and called for Jake 2. As soon as he was on the wolf, the two of them took off for the city. Once they were out of sight, Flame Princess turned her attention back to Finn. She was holding back tears.
"Don't do it. Don't do it, Fen."
He voice was breaking, worrying the young man. He gently grasped her wrist, trying his best to smile.
"It's alright. I'll be ok."
FP wiped away her eyes before they could overflow.
"It's just… you can't die. I… I need you!"
Finn's mind had become a maelstrom of thoughts. Never in his life did he think the girl before him would utter such a thing. On the other hand, it wasn't really him that she was saying it to, rather his other self. While he was stuck in a train of thought, the fiery girl beside him tried removing the torn pieces of his shirt, only to find the locket connected to his neck, spattered with his blood but relatively undamaged.
She gently took the item in her hands, examining its design. Finn finally broke out of his daze, setting his sights upon the silvery item. His hand immediately snatched its chain, startling FP. The two gazed into each other's eyes for a moment, before Finn began to speak.
"I swear to you on my life, this is a 'for your own good' secret."
Flame Princess briefly considered refusing the statement, too enticed by what the locket's meaning might be to him. After all, it was in the shape of a heart. She was at the same time ashamed, believing she might be partially envious of the fact that he had a special someone before his time in the Fire Kingdom, someone who he wasn't willing to let go. In the end, she respected his privacy, letting go of the locket.
"I see. I'm sorry."
Finn placed the item back on his chest. In the distance, Jake 2 could be seen returning, with what seemed to be help on his back. Seeing this, FP excitedly looked back to Finn.
"CB's back! You'll be fine!"
The flame human smirked.
"Told you."
The young man allowed himself to rest, closing his eyes as the medics made it to the site. Flame Princess backed away as the professionals took over. Cinnamon Bun placed a hand on her shoulder, giving an assuring smile. She nodded back, then watched silently while the doctors did their work. The whole time, she couldn't take her eyes off the shimmer that was Finn's locket.
What I would give to know what's in that thing.
Well, stuff is taken care of, now it's just a matter of getting back into the flow. Anyway, the last few episodes... pretty interesting to say the least. The Tower, crazy biz, would love to see that spirit arm again. Would also like to know how upset everyone is about Finn borrowing a bunch of the 'Lego blocks' that make up their kingdoms. Sad Face, charming, all I can say. The next one... makes me nervous. Anyway, enough rambling, that's not what you guys care about.
If you'll excuse me, I have about a dozen story updates to go through. Peace.
