Drawing Tempest
Cinnamon Bun's fists were tightening to the point of actual pain as he watched on through the fiery portal, where the action was magnified to a high level of despair due to the first-person view. On the other end, Finn was being forced back, unwilling to make the first move as the gigantic Olympian before him took massive, rhythmic steps towards him.
The general beside CB was in a similar situation to the candy knight, particularly in the guilt department. There was no way to tell the flame human to retreat, run away, or any command at all. Finn was unfamiliar with any fire army signal flares, and based on the light-altering powers of the elemental he was facing, the general was hesitant to believe anything from outside the dome would even be seen.
As the pair gazed on with nerves and resentment, the door behind them suddenly burst open, making both jump. Upon quickly turning to see who had interrupted, they found none other than Flame Princess, an immensely dense expression upon her face, molded into anger.
"Don't get the wrong idea. I came to make sure Fen is still alright."
CB and the general just stared at their leader, a look of shock imprinted on their faces. Not from the king's entrance, but from what they would be forced to tell her. Unfortunately, they didn't even get the chance, as FP quickly set her eyes on the viewing portal between the two. Her pupils instantly dilated.
"What… am I looking at?"
All the resentment pent up in her features had been discarded, replaced by a thick veil of fear. Through Finn's eyes, she saw her answer.
With no more room to back away, Finn dove to the left, avoiding the first blow his new opponent had thrown. The ground where the flame human had been standing was pulverized, blasting shards of volcanic rock everywhere. With a slide and flip to restore his stance, Finn was prepared to begin his counterattack, seeing as the larger Olympian needed a moment to pull his fist out of the ground.
Igniting his own flames, the hero practically disappeared from his current position, sword drawn and blazing at incredible speeds towards his target. Past experience told him to aim for the giant's neck, the likeliest weak point. Placing all his strength into the thrust, Finn slashed down.
All he received in response was a rock-solid clang.
Finn's blade had struck one of the strange bright portions of the Olympian's body, cancelling out his attack. His stifled movement made him unprepared as a blast of flames threw him off the hulking elemental and down to the ground, where he collapsed soon after. The female Olympian had abandoned her perch, now gently hovering nearby. She lowered her fiery hand, used to deliver the blow to Finn, then let out a chuckle.
"I'm afraid blades won't do you much good."
She landed herself carefully on another nearby boulder, resuming her leisurely position.
"Apollo's skin is embedded with polished obsidian glass, hard enough to deflect a tiny little sword, but also glossed enough to allow him to gather and manipulate light energy."
Finn managed to get to his feet, reforming his sword and bracing for the next round. Apollo had set his sights on the flame human once again, now lumbering towards him with his reflective hide gleaming to the point of making Finn's eyes ache. Regardless, he chose the more assertive action this time, making another run at the Olympian. The hero extended his pattern, using repeated shadowless thrusts to swarm over Apollo like an angry beehive.
The giant attempted to swat the barely visible enemy without success, irritating the woman currently resting nearby.
"You idiot! Blast him!" she ordered.
Apollo registered the command slowly, seeming to charge up the light shells upon him. As the brightness intensified, Finn took notice, retreating without hesitation. The flurry of strikes he'd performed had failed to reach his goal, but he couldn't risk being so close to an unknown attack.
The light engulfed Apollo entirely, before unleashing it in a single eruption of nova-like energy. Finn instinctually covered and closed his eyes, along with bracing for an impact. Physical damage was remarkably absent however, unlike the effects to his vision.
The flame human shouted in pain at the stinging in his pupils, as the light penetrated both his arm and eyelids. Finn stumbled backwards, disoriented by the blurs he now saw, no matter if his eyes were open or closed. The world was a bizarre haze of yellow and red, offering no sense of balance. The only thing he could understand was a very blunt and forceful blow to his chest.
Were it not for the rock wall behind him, Finn guessed he'd have flow a much greater distance. Although, such a journey would've avoided the bone-crushing impact to his backside.
By the time the young man scraped himself off the ground and got to his feet, his best estimate said he had at least a few broken ribs. Luckily, his eyesight was returning, giving him just enough foresight to block Apollo's fist with his lava vine sword. With futile effort, he attempted to withstand the giant's overwhelming strength, gradually being pressed back to the floor as the cursed blade held strong.
Flame Princess grabbed the general's collar, practically shaking the man.
"Get him out of there, NOW!"
The fiery militant could only respond with a hopeless head shake.
"We can't. There's no way to contact him from here. And it would take almost half an hour to reach the area."
His voice conveyed a controlled posture, even with the fear in his eyes. FP's outbursts were becoming more and more volatile with each passing second watching Finn be slowly crushed. Cinnamon Bun desperately wanted not only a contribution to calming the royal but also justification for his act in setting events in motion. It had been his idea to spy upon Finn's activities.
Perhaps, it would've been easier on his king if they weren't forced to watch the flame human be beaten to death. The clearer Finn's eyes became, the harder it became to witness his battle.
Flame Princess shoved her military's leader back, letting out a frustrated growl as she stormed up to the viewing portal.
"You promised, Fen! Don't! Die!"
CB was about to remind her he couldn't hear anything they said, but soon realized it was no use. She needed to vent, otherwise the whole palace might explode. FP continued to fruitlessly order Finn to run away, all while the general made up his mind, exiting as quickly as he could to signal troops to move on the black dome.
Left alone, the two remaining inhabitants of the room fell silent. The image of Apollo overpowering Finn's sword remained in the portal, unchanging for the moment as the hero struggled. Finally, after several empty minutes, Cinnamon Bun walked up to his king and reached to place an arm around her shoulders. The fiery girl raised her hung head in response, setting eyes on the knight beside her.
The candy person's expression was not quite blank, but tinted with a subtle sense of what Flame Princess could only describe as faith.
"He isn't the type to break promises."
The knight allowed a minimal grin.
"Don't you think?"
FP considered his words, breaking away from her guardian's eyes and meeting the vision of Finn. Through sheer will, the flame human had managed one good shove, gaining just enough space to roll out of Apollo's way and back to a fighting stance. He was trembling, based on the shaky vision, but definitely still had the means to combat his foes.
As the hero charged again at the giant, FP gave a single nod.
"No. He isn't."
As Finn swarmed Apollo with yet another assault of slashes and thrusts, the other Olympian watched with mixed boredom and irritation from afar. She found no logic in the young man's attacks, letting out a yawn as she finally lifted off of her perch and floated over to the two elementals fighting. Raising a hand, she prepared to once again blast Finn off her minion.
The sound of volcanic flesh being sliced stopped her cold.
Apollo gave a rough grunt and placed a massive palm over his ribs, while Finn retreated to a safe distance, a few specs of lava dripping from his sword. He flicked the blade clean, then pointed the tip at the astonished lady.
"I don't think you even understand your own power."
The Olympian remained shocked a moment longer, then changed her face to communicate the indignant rage she was feeling.
"Excuse me!?"
Finn glanced over at Apollo, seeing the titan in a daze. He next looked back to the other Olympian, whose flames were jetting erratically as she glared at her foe.
"Who do you think you are, scum, talking to an Olympian like that?"
She fired a stream at the flame human, who quickly dodged the attack and managed to duck behind a boulder, shielding him as the elemental continued to concentrate her enraged combustion on him.
"I am Aphrodite! The puppeteer, the goddess, the master of your very matrix!"
She ceased her assault, looking over to Apollo, who was still shaking off the buzzing sensation in his mind.
"Get over here and splatter him all over the mountainside!"
The lug seemed to react instantly to the woman's barking, reaffirming his focus and lumbering over to the now boiling rock Finn had taken shelter behind. Aphrodite continued to rant as Apollo tore the boulder apart, revealing the hero, who was just fast enough to block the giant's next punch with his blade edge.
"After he breaks every bone in your body, I'll make sure the last thing you see before he burns your retinas out is my laughing face!"
On cue, Apollo began gathering light upon his obsidian scales. Finn's eyes grew wide, recalling that even if he attempted to shroud his vision, the intense light would temporarily blind him. Aphrodite would be too fast for him to make an escape, assuming he could avoid the punishing force of the giant Olympian's fist. If he were to stumble without sight once more, it would be his end.
Above and behind Apollo's back, the smug woman manipulating him hovered with her arms crossed, having gotten over her rage and now casting a devious grin at the faltering Finn. The flame human compared her positioning to her minion, looking back and forth between the two Olympians. She laughed.
"That's right, fool, stare into the last faces you'll ever see!"
Finding the opportunity, Finn used his remaining strength to hold all of Apollo's strength back with only his left arm, leaving his sword arm free. The cursed weapon shifted forms as he was brought to his knees, his resistant body beginning to crack the soft, volcanic earth. The lava vine ceased its morph, existing as a slim and terrifyingly sharp blade resting on Finn's forearm.
The flame human now had his back pressed against the ground, feeling the earth weaken under the sheer pressure. His broken ribs contributed to the growing sense of being stabbed from within. The light shells upon Apollo were nearly at full charge, prepared to unleash a blast that would guarantee the permanent loss of Finn's eyesight.
The hero aimed. He held his breath. He fired.
"Urk…!"
Apollo froze, releasing the pressure on his fist and remaining inactive. The gathered light upon his obsidian scales scattered, letting loose showers of brilliant sparks that crackled and dissipated like miniature fireworks. As the last of the specs disappeared, the entire area held a collective silence.
Aphrodite's mouth hung open. Her flames were still, yet she remained airborne. Her eyes, previously holding a sadistic glare, now only contained a blank and ghostly stare. As the seconds ticked by, the coloring of her irises began to drain, appearing as two circles of cooling lava. The Olympian looked down at her minion, now running her eyes the length of the incredibly thin spear impaling Apollo through the back.
Following the object further, she found that it continued on, straight through her own body.
Finn opened his eyes, his matrix pulsing like mad, lava streaks dripping down the sides of his face. His lava vine had hit its mark: the one weak spot in Apollo's natural armor, the flesh not covered by his obsidian glass. The weapon had made it all the way through the giant's mass, but was too thin to cause any significant damage. The same could not be said for the woman behind the light manipulator.
After an enormous risk, waiting for just the right angle and opening, Finn had successfully pierced Aphrodite's elemental matrix. His lava vine spear jutted out several feet from the woman's back, slowly burning up from the intense heat of the fiery villain's core. Accepting the smoking weapon as evidence enough, the young man retracted his shifting weapon, immediately rolling to the side as Apollo's free weigh dropped the giant to the ground with a crash.
A thump from nearby signaled Aphrodite collapsing the same as her fellow Olympian, now lying motionless on her back, a small wound in her chest. Although it took great effort, Finn pulled himself off the ground a final time, using his blade's normal sword form for support. Limping around Apollo's figure, he made it to Aphrodite's side, allowing himself to take a knee and examine the fallen foe.
The Olympian was still staring out into space, her eyes nearly greyed entirely by her weakening life force. Eventually though, she managed to tilt her head enough to look Finn in the eye. He guessed she couldn't speak yet, and so spoke on both their behalf, finally having a chance to answer his previous statement.
"I remembered something important during that struggle. Any control of free will, regardless of the method, will always hinder the mental and physical capabilities of the victim."
He glanced at Apollo.
"He was just another lumbering grunt under your control."
The flame human closed his eyes, both offering what little peace the powerful elemental deserved and resting his tired vision.
"I wasn't fighting the force of two Olympians."
Aphrodite's matrix finally split in half due to the grievous damage it had sustained, dispersing her energy rapidly into the air. As her skin grew dim, Finn stood up, turning away from the dying elemental.
"I was fighting a brat and her pet."
Her eyes trembling in their sockets, Aphrodite could only look back at the hero as he limped away from her. The Olympian's body soon turned a pale grey, burned out by the now rampant energies of her matrix. Beginning to disintegrate, her final act was to accept defeat, relaxing her disappearing limbs and staring off into the ashen skies, a look of self-pity upon her face.
As a tranquil atmosphere finally fell upon the valley, Finn allowing his lava vine sword to retract, its duty fulfilled.
The flame human took but a single additional step before tripping, instantly falling to the ground on his chest, utterly drained of all energy. As he lay there, Finn noticed movement not far from his position. The ground shook momentarily as a large force seemed to begin supporting itself off the volcanic rock. Realizing Apollo could easily crush his weakened body, Finn closed his eyes, waiting for the end.
While he could hear the Olympian's heavy steps coming closer, the flame human found his consciousness slipping away, far too exhausted to remain clear-headed. A smile graced his lips, grateful that his end would come peacefully, as he slept.
The world faded out.
A gentle crackling was not quite what Finn expected when he thought of the afterlife, especially since he'd been to the Underworld, which he described as basically a shiny castle inside a landfill. He also didn't expect warmth, the feeling of security, and…
Soft breathing?
In a flash, Finn's vision struck the dark red ceiling above him, staring aimlessly at first, unable to believe he wasn't seeing the roof of a bleak and enormous cavern that signified Death's domain. When his eyes managed to accept the fact, they wandered down to the hero's level, now examining the layout of the room he was in.
Undoubtedly, he was in the Fire Kingdom. Torches filled with gentle flames kept the room lit, explaining both the sensation and the noise. The heat was obvious, especially when Finn's touch and balance sensory told him he was both in a bed and covered by a blanket, likely to keep his core hot after losing so much energy. The breathing however, was a surprise.
A slight weigh on Finn's left leg drew his attention to the appendage, discovering someone who had apparently passed out waiting for him to wake up. Flame Princess's folded arms were supporting her head as the fire elemental rested, calmly inhaling and exhaling. Breaking his gaze away from the peaceful ruler, Finn looked to the opposite side of the bed, finding Cinnamon Bun seated close by with his arms folded as well.
The candy knight was sitting upright however, with a hard look on his face. His eyes were closed, in thought, sleep, or perhaps meditation; Finn couldn't tell which. Convinced no one else was there to be found, the flame human refocused on his own being, testing his movement. The struggle resulted in a sharp pain through his chest, causing him to groan slightly.
CB's eyes instantly flew open, set on the bedridden hero before him. His previous frown turned to a smile.
"Fen! Thank Grod."
The pastry began helping his injured friend sit up without too much pain, only for the movement to wake up Flame Princess, who took a moment to shake out her drowsiness. By the time she had recounted her senses, the monarch witnessed CB placing another pillow behind Finn's back to better support the now conscious young man. Her eyes went wide right before she practically lunged at him.
Unlike Cinnamon Bun, she didn't say anything at first. Finn did however, consisting of fractured gibberish in response to the blitz of shocks and aches shooting through his body from the powerful embrace he'd received. Fortunately, CB convinced his king to back away before he passed out. Once everyone settled down, FP simply gave a heartfelt smile through watery(the fire elemental equivalent) eyes.
"I guess… I guess I should've known you'd come back," the frazzled elemental laughed.
Finn couldn't help but smile back. It had been a good several years since he'd been surrounded by this much warmth and support. On his own for the vast majority of time, it was a magnificent feeling to have the two of them so relieved about his awakening. Apparently they knew he felt this way as well, as their smiles grew accordingly. He assumed his eyes had shifted to blue from the joy.
"Heh, yeah," was all he could say.
As both his companions scooted closer, Finn raised a hand to his midsection, feeling the inured portion. The blanket had fallen away as he'd sat up, revealing a large layering of, ironically, lava vines bandaging his chest.
"Those are infused with antiseptics that should help heal as they soak in," FP explained.
Finn nodded, realizing he'd been right about his broken ribs. Flame Princess frowned slightly.
"You definitely seem to heal a lot slower than other fire elementals."
The flame human nodded lightly, understanding that this was just another limitation of being a hybrid being. While the hero was deep in thought, CB cleared his throat, drawing attention to the knight.
"Listen, Fen, I need to confess something to you. It's the least you deserve."
Finn firmly placed his attention on the candy person, willing to hear him out.
"Before you left, the general and I slipped you a vision spell, which let us see and hear everything as you would."
The young man was instantly shocked, but waited for CB to finish. The pastry hung his head.
"I doubted you. I was so desperate to help Flame Princess move on that I even looked to you as a possible murderer, what with all the strange behaviors you exhibit."
He set his eyes back on the hero.
"I wanted to be sure you were who you say you are: a noble and loyal guardian of the Fire Kingdom. After what we saw through your eyes, I have no reservations that that statement is absolutely true."
He sighed.
"I'm sorry, Fen. And I understand if you see me as an overly-suspicious fool and bare me ill will."
At an earlier point in time, Cinnamon Bun would've been correct in all of his expectations of the young man's reaction. But wisdom had come with experience, giving the hero a much broader view on how people interacted and accepted one another. He went over his response carefully, then reached over and placed a hand on the ashamed bun's arm.
"Neither of those is true."
Cinnamon Bun was taken aback, an expression of disbelief on his face. Finn continued while the knight and king listened intently.
"You did everything you should've to protect your kingdom and its ruler. You've only known me for a short time, I came out of nowhere, and I keep to myself. If I was you, I'd have done the same. I learned, somewhere along the path, the importance of protecting all who live within a kingdom. Each man, woman, and child has their own story to tell, their own future to create, and it is the duty of the strong to ensure those people have a chance to laugh, cry, and hope."
By the time Finn finished, both FP and Cinnamon Bun were wearing warm smiles, their eyes trembling like water droplets in a breeze.
"That… was beautiful," the fiery girl finally said.
The flame human returned the grin to his companions, then let out a chuckle.
"Thanks. I read it in an old book."
All three burst into a collective laugh, further intensifying the warm atmosphere of the room. Once they calmed however, CB placed a hand on Finn's shoulder.
"The fact that you remember it makes it no less meaningful."
Flame Princess nodded in agreement, smiling even brighter at her bedridden guardian. The sight, going even beyond the young lady's dazzling appearance, only stirred Finn's heart more as he watched. How she'd kept the grace and gentleness, after all the time that had passed, it both amazed and empowered him now in the present. The flame human unconsciously hummed in thought of the concept, until Cinnamon Bun finally exhaled deeply.
"Well then, here's to the philosophy of futures for bringing you back to us in one piece."
The sentence snapped something in Finn's mind, something that, only now, bothered him greatly. He turned a more serious expression.
"Hold on. How is it that I'm even alive at all?"
He shifted slightly to sit up straight, the others listening.
"That massive Olympian, Apollo, he woke up, he could've just walked over and finished me."
CB shook his head.
"The group of soldiers that found you didn't see any sign of that giant."
He let his eyes drop.
"…Or that colossal structure."
Finn nearly gasped in disbelief.
"What!? That entire thing? Gone?"
Cinnamon Bun nodded.
"All that remained was a giant crater of lava, a freshly made one."
FP joined her friends in contemplation.
"It makes sense they'd relocate it. Now we have to start the search all over again. But, Fen's right, why would they leave him alive?"
The crackle of torches maintained steady room for thought, the unique silence filled with nothing but unheard thoughts running through the trio's minds. Try as they would however, no justification came to fruition. It was Finn who dismissed the subject, shaking his head.
"For now I guess it isn't important. What we need now it to figure out what that structure was."
CB reached to his beltline, ruffling a little until he held up the hand he was retrieving with. Levitating above his palm was a small flame, abnormal in depth and motion.
"That vision spell let us get a good picture of it from what you saw. If we can find the right person, they should be able to decipher what the purpose of that thing is."
On cue, the flame expanded as if physically stretched, eventually appearing as a small mirror-like figure. Finn and Flame Princess leaned in to get a good view, as an image came into focus. Sure enough, the mysterious construct was revealed within, just as Finn had seen it. The kingdom's ruler furrowed her brow as she studied it alongside her companions, trying to piece together a use or function.
The collaborative hypothesis was proven ineffective when FP groaned in frustration.
"This won't work. Odds are that they were still building it when Fen found it. We can't judge anything unless we saw a whole picture."
Cinnamon Bun rubbed his chin, coming up with a reply.
"We need something beyond a simple expert. We need someone with a high level of technical engineering and experience with massive projects such as this."
Flame Princess took significantly less time to find a solution than her two knights, evidenced by the strained look in her eyes and the frown that now defined her features. Finn and CB noticed soon enough, focusing on the fire elemental in anticipation for her answer. The king sighed, not with relief, or wishful thinking, but with negative anticipation. Cinnamon Bun caught onto the signs afterward, joining in a look of indecision.
Finn looked between the two, hoping for an explanation. Flame Princess shifted her gaze to out the window on the opposite wall, casually staring at the smoky skyline of her kingdom.
"Bonnibel."
With a flick of the wrist, Zeus used a hand gesture to playback the images presented before him. The Olympian watched carefully, analyzing each step of the battle waging in the fiery portal. He tilted his head to the side as he saw Finn strike Apollo's weak spot, and he hummed quietly as the titanic light-bender attempted to pummel the flame human into the ground. Finally, he grunted in mixed disapproval and concern as he witnessed Aphrodite being speared.
The final pieces of the vision showed the foolish girl's eyes trembling in their sockets, losing life-force by the second. Eventually, the portal went dark, having played all it could. Zeus pushed the spellbound recording aside, intertwining his fingers as he began to think. His followers waited patiently for an order, or even a comment about what happened.
However, instead, the one who broke the tension was Apollo himself, setting off crashing vibrations through the cavern with each lumbering step. The massive Olympian slowly made his way to the side of the chamber, doing his best to appear smaller and less present. All his fellow fire elementals stared at him; most with a look of disapproval, some with confusion. Once he took a seat on a nearby boulder, silence returned for a brief period of time.
Zeus soon let out a breath, leaning forward in his self-made throne and studying his returned subordinate. Apollo's wound had healed almost instantly, having barely fazed him at all. The solemn look on his face suggested he was conflicted about something. His leader chose to extract what that something was, even though he already had an idea.
"So, I suppose you'll be explaining why you let that irritating fool live."
It was more a command than an inquiry. Regardless, Apollo said nothing, instead simply lifting his head to look his superior in the eye. After a few seconds of contact, Zeus nodded, although held his unsatisfied expression.
"I can understand honor has its place in our world. You were freed from Aphrodite's ridiculous hold, thus you found it only fitting to spare your liberator's life."
Apollo hung his head, waiting for the imminent repercussions. Zeus gazed down on the giant for a few moments longer, then closed his eyes.
"You're forgiven of this… folly, on one condition."
The light-bender looked back at his leader.
"The next time you face him, under no circumstance do you hesitate to crush him into ashes."
Apollo remained motionless initially, as did the other surrounding Olympians, eagerly waiting for their comrade's reply. At last, the massive elemental gave a single nod, earning a mirrored gesture from Zeus.
"Excellent. Now, if you don't mind, go check on Poseidon. I imagine he's quite exhausted after having to relocate an entire superstructure."
Apollo bowed slightly, then stood up and proceeded back the way he came, intent on reassuring his fellow Olympian's well-being. Once the crashing footsteps of the giant were gone, Zeus turned to Athena, ever present beside his throne.
"What can you recommend based on these last few events?"
The female elemental pondered the requested info for only a moment, before motioning the enchanted flame portal to once more replay the conflict that transpired earlier. She narrowed her vision as she watched, through Aphrodite's eyes, Finn defeating the manipulative Olympian.
"Arrogant or not, Aphrodite was still an Olympian. Her demise will have a massive reaction from the Fire Kingdom proper. They will see us as weaker than anticipated."
She turned to face her leader.
"We must act fast. Terror is a powerful weapon, one that must remain in our possession."
Zeus considered all of his adviser's words, leaning forward again to contemplate. It was at that moment that a brilliant flash of fire appeared in the room, instantly firing itself to the top of a stalagmite, where its true form as Hermes was revealed. The lightning-fast scout gave a salute, ready to deliver news.
"What have you found?" Zeus inquired.
The younger elemental held his professional posture as he replied.
"I managed to overhear the king's next move. She is planning to visit the Candy Kingdom."
While the majority of the Olympian's chattered amongst themselves in response to the information, Zeus turned again to Athena for a potential motive.
"Seeing as the knight survived, he likely relayed a description of the project to his king. They would need someone of high intellect to make sense of it."
She narrowed her eyes.
"The ruling monarch of the Candy Kingdom is known for her technological achievements."
That was all Zeus needed in order to piece together Flame Princess's reasons for visiting a foreign land. He sat back in his seat, formulating an effective course of action. Recalling Athena's previous urgency to act, a wicked smile grew on his face.
"Ares."
A hooded figure resting at the foot of Zeus' perch lifted his head, revealing a set of glowing orange eyes and nothing more. His leader looked down upon him with great enthusiasm.
"Why don't you go and introduce us to the neighbors?"
What was only a set of glowing eyes was now joined by a wickedly sharp row of blazing teeth, curved upwards in a hostile grin that would rival the Lich.
"My pleasure."
