The Brady Eight: Just Starting Out

A Welcome Aboard Sequel

Chapter 38

A/N—This chapter is a direct continuation of the last chapter. I got many requests to do this chapter. It may be shorter than other chapters, but I hope you enjoy!

At the high school

Jan and Beth are walking to their lockers at the end of the day. Billy Garst is waiting for her.

Billy: Jan!

Jan: Hey Billy!

Billy: Wanna go to Pete's Pizza for dinner tonight?

Jan: Actually, Beth and I were going to the IMAX to see "To Fly" tonight.

Billy: Face falls. Oh, well then how 'bout another night?

Jan: Actually, Beth and I were wondering if you wanted to go too? Peter and Julie, and Beth and Chad are going. We can make it a triple date.

Billy: All right. What time should I pick you up?

Jan: The movie starts at seven, so we were thinking about going to Pete's at five-thirty.

Billy: Okay. I can pick you up at five.

Jan: Great!

Chad approaches the trio.

Beth: Hey Chad.

Chad: Gives his girlfriend a peck. Hey! So, you in, Billy?

Billy: Yeah! Sounds like fun!

Beth: How was your Chemistry quiz?

Chad: Proud. Aced it!

Beth: Kisses his cheek. I knew you would!

Chad: Thanks to you! He moves in with an embrace and soft kiss.

Peter and Julie join them.

Julie: You all in?

Jan: Yep!

Peter: Great! I was thinking maybe we could all go to the library, get our homework done and then go to Pete's Pizza.

Chad: Works for me.

Beth: Me too.

Jan: Same here.

Billy: I've got basketball practice, but I can meet you guys at Pete's at five.

Jan: Okay. To Peter. The three of us can ride to the library and Pete's Pizza, and then Billy can meet us there. I'll ride with him to the theatre and then back home.

At Pete's Pizza

A waitress seats the three couples and hands them menus.

Waitress: Can I get you anything to drink while you look over the menu?

Peter: How 'bout a pitcher of Mountain Dew?

Billy: And one of root beer.

Chad: How 'bout making it a Dr Pepper instead?

The guys look at their dates for confirmation.

Beth: Three pitchers?

Jan: Decisively. Yes. Mountain Dew, root beer and Dr Pepper.

Waitress: We have a special. Two large pizzas and two pitchers.

Peter: Dawns on him. I'd forgotten about that special. We can do the special and then order one more pizza and pitcher. After all, there are six of us.

Beth: That'll work.

Waitress: Clarifying. So, the special with three pitchers: one Mountain Dew, one root beer, and one Dr Pepper, and three large pizzas?

Chad: Yes.

Waitress: I'll bring the pitchers and glasses while you decide on the pizzas.

Peter: Thanks.

The waitress leaves.

Billy: So, what pizzas do you like?

Chad: I'm a ham and onions kind of guy.

Julie: I love the barbeque pizza.

Beth: Pepperoni for me.

Jan: Veggie lovers for me.

Peter: Barbeque for me. And you, Billy?

Billy: I like meat lovers.

Beth: I can do that instead.

Peter: We could do one large barbeque pizza, one large meat lovers, and then two mediums of veggie lovers and ham and onions instead. There is a special that's one pitcher and two medium pizzas.

Jan: Works for me.

Chad: Me too.

Beth: Yeah.

Julie: Okay.

Billy: That's fine with me.

The waitress returns with their drinks and glasses.

Waitress: Have you decided?

Peter: We're going to do both specials: the two pitchers and large pizzas and the one pitcher with two medium pizzas.

Waitress: Gets out her pen and pad. Okay, what'll it be?

Peter: We'll have one large barbeque pizza, one large meat lovers, and then two mediums of veggie lovers and ham and onions.

Waitress: Reads it back. Okay, that's one large barbeque pizza, one large meat lovers, and then two mediums of veggie lovers and ham and onions.

Chad: That's correct.

Waitress: All right. It'll be out shortly.

The waitress leaves and the kids converse.

Beth: Have you thought about what you're going to take next year?

Julie: I'm taking Advanced Senior English, Home Economics, Study Hall, A.P. French, A.P. Calculus and A.P. Biology.

Peter: ASL 2, A.P. Calculus, Study Hall, Advanced Shop, Advanced Senior English, and Mechanical Drawing.

Jan: Me, I'm taking ASL 2, A.P. History, A.P. English, A.P. Studio Art, Study Hall, and Geography.

Billy: Kinesiology, Biology 2, Latin 2, Algebra 2, General Senior English, and Study Hall.

Beth: A.P. Spanish, Advanced Senior English, Geography, U.S. History, Band and Study Hall.

Chad: I haven't figured it out yet.

Beth: Kisses him on the cheek. Well, we've got a few weeks before we register for classes.

Soon, the waitress returns with their pizzas.

Waitress: Here you go!

Peter: Thanks!

Waitress: And, I brought some extra napkins.

Julie: Thanks.

Waitress: Need anything else?

Chad: Not that I can think of.

Waitress: All right. I'll be back with your check in a few.

Billy: Thanks!

Beth: To Billy. Who are we playing for basketball homecoming?

Billy: Fairview.

Chad: Frowns. They're fierce.

Billy: They are, but we can take 'em.

Jan: The team's great this year.

Billy: Blushes. Thanks.

Peter: You guys are.

The couples finish their pizza, pay, and then drive to the theatre.

Billy: Opens the car door for Jan. We'll see you guys there.

Chad: Okay!

They arrive at the theatre and walk to the ticket counter.

Cashier: May I help you?

Peter: Six tickets for "To Fly."

Cashier: That'll be twelve dollars.

Peter collects money from the other two men and pays the cashier. They walk into the theatre and takes their seats.

At the Brady House

After the movie concludes, the couples go their separate ways. Billy drops Jan off, and walks her to the front door.

Jan: I had a good time.

Billy: So did I. I'm glad you, Beth and Peter decided to turn the movie into a triple date.

Jan: Yeah, it was fun. I love IMAX movies.

Billy: Chuckles. I like how it makes you feel like you're flying.

They stand, silently gazing into each other's eyes. Billy moves in for a kiss, embracing Jan and planting a light kiss on her lips. Jan deepens the kiss. Peter walks up the sidewalk and sees the couple engaged in an embrace. He clears his throat and the couple startles out of their kiss.

Jan: Oh! When did you get here?

Peter: I just pulled up.

Billy: Disbelieving. We've been out here that long?

Peter: Shrugs it off. Ah, I just got home.

Billy: I probably should go. I've got homework. See you tomorrow.

Jan: Blushing. Yeah.

They engage in another embrace and kiss.

Peter: I'll just go on inside.

The couple ignores him and Peter goes inside.

Billy: Reluctantly ends the kiss. I probably should go.

Jan: See you tomorrow.

She leans in for one more kiss and then he gets in his car and drives off. Jan watches him drive off and then enters the house. Carol's lying on the living room couch, reading a book.

Carol: Sees her daughter. How was the movie?

Jan: It was good. In some of the scenes, I felt like I was flying. The movie was about the history of flight.

Carol: Sounds like a good movie.

Jan: Oh yes. Better than Snow Job, which was still quite good.

Carol: What's playing Friday?

Jan: They're re-releasing Cosmos.

Carol: Your father and I may have to go see it.

Jan: If you do, I can babysit.

Carol: Smiles. Thanks.

Jan: Yawns. Well, I'm beat. Good night.

Carol: Good night.
