When both men stopped talking the sun was already coming up above the roofs of Seattle. They had taken a lot of time to go over everything that had happened since Delsin got his powers, as well as a lot of things that had happened between them before that. It felt good, extremely good, to share all worries and fears with each other. Neither of them had any idea how many things there were they had never talked about until now. Delsin hoped there would be fewer fights and secrets from now on. Seeing how this night's talk managed to improve their relationship, this was something they should do more often.
After they talked about Fetch as well and what she had told him - Delsin ignored the fact that she had done so trusting him not to tell others - Reggie, even more so than before, was keen on making sure to talk to Fetch in order to apologize. He hoped she would understand him too. That they would be able to meet halfway. Things would become so much easier.
"If you'd be a little more tactful when it comes to women you wouldn't have a problem with Fetch to begin with", Reggie ignored his brother's statement. Not only because he was incredibly tired and simply wanted to go to bed and sleep for the rest of the day. "I can help you improve those skills if you want to, but first I'm gonna go and pay Yana a visit and tell her what happened", he barely got up from the couch when Reggie called after him.
"She already knows."
"What? How?"
"I told her."
Okay, that took Delsin by surprise. He had been with his brother the whole night, how was he able to.. oh, wait. Last evening. Of course. His brother must've met Yana while he and Fetch were running around town to find the core relays. Suddenly he remembered the phone call. That hadn't been some other cop who had information for them, that had been Yana! Yana was calling his brother because she wanted to see him? For a split second, a wave of jealousy washed over him. His mind made up all those weird stories and pictures which were interrupted by Reggie who, without knowing it, diffused the situation.
"The call yesterday came from Joe. He's the owner of the Latte Owl Yana visits frequently", Delsin remembered the man from the day he spent with Yana. From what he had seen and the bit Yana had told him, Joe was close to her. As it appeared close enough that she made him call Reggie. "She was a little rattled yesterday and went on a rampage in the cafe."
"She did what?"
"You heard me", Reggie gave a little laugh. "It's kinda hard to imagine right? Even if we just met her a couple of days ago it doesn't sound like her at all."
"Do you know what happened that she reacted that way?"
"Met her mother."
"Oh.. going by what I know they don't get along."
"You know about that?"
He shook his head. "Not really. I caught her off guard and asked about her mother. Her mood completely changed after that", it fit what Reggie was telling him just now. Though the whole rampage part still was weird to him. "Did she tell you anything more?"
The older one moved a hand over his face. All he wanted to do was to finally get some sleep. Why didn't Delsin grant him that wish? "She only told me that she hates her mother and that she left Yana and her father all alone. I can imagine you want to talk to her but please don't. Aside from the fact that we should not push her to talk about her family if she doesn't feel like it, she specifically told me she doesn't want to see any of us right now. Give her the time she needs. I told her to give us a call if there's any kind of trouble so please, no solo runs here."
That was something Delsin didn't like to hear. At all.
He wasn't able to check on Yana yesterday since he was occupied with finding Fetch. Which had been the plan from the beginning anyway, but he didn't even manage to write a message between all the chasing and hunting down core relays. Maybe Yana wouldn't have felt so bad about her mother if at one point during the day a message from him appeared on her phone. Delsin liked to imagine that would be the case at least. Since neither he nor Reggie knew the story behind the relationship between mother and daughter, he could only imagine what had happened. Finding out that Yana had a rather bad day yesterday didn't make things better.
And now he couldn't even go and check on her?
He wanted to make sure she was fine. That she knew he was there if she needed someone to talk to. Learning from his past mistakes and last night, he could now officially say it was better to talk about problems instead of bottling them up deep inside yourself. And it looked like Yana's mother was a problem that was bottled up.
"Can I ask you the same question you asked me a few days ago?", Reggie turned his attention to Delsin who had gone rather quiet after Reggie had told him about last night.
Looking at his brother Delsin nodded. "I'm not sure which one exactly but shoot."
"Do you like Yana?"
Oh, that question.
If Delsin was honest he wasn't sure about what or if he felt something for Yana. And if he did he couldn't even tell how deep he was in already. She was cute, he enjoyed spending time with her, he liked her smile. He loved listening to her. Thinking about it he realized he was probably acting like a teenager in love. He had tried to flirt with Yana but she didn't react how he would expect. Thinking back to their meeting, him giving her his hoodie because of the cappuccino stain, she didn't even want to take, let alone put it on. Even if she was angry at him because of the whole incident, he was trying to help. He understood that, no question but she definitely wasn't looking happy at his offer. Other women would've gladly taken the hoodie and any other piece of clothing he would take off.
Maybe that was one of the reasons why he liked her so much. The fact that she was more interested in talking to him. About just normal things starting with the weather, things they enjoyed doing, the music and movies they liked. She made him feel normal. Like he didn't have powers. When others would run away, she would sit with him and listen. The only other person in this city who did this was Reggie. It meant a lot to Delsin, more than he could put it into words. And if he tried he would definitely sound like a teenager in love.
Knowing the look on his brother's face Reggie began to smile. "I'll take that as a 'yes'."
"I didn't even say anything!"
"But you thought it", he pointed a finger at Delsin. "And your eyes deceive you too. Yana is a nice person, I'm just worried about her because.. don't get me wrong okay?", Delsin had a very good idea where this was going. "You're a Conduit. You're living a rather dangerous life right now - one I don't approve of because it makes me worry way too much. I don't want to worry about Yana as well. I like her and I don't want her to get into trouble because of you. Or me for that matter. If this whole trip is over feel free to bring her along. I have to be completely honest with you: I like her way more than any of your old girlfriends or those who tried to become your girlfriend."
"Reggie", Delsin got up and walked over to his brother, putting a hand on his shoulder. He pretended to look serious but a smile was tugging on his lips. "And you wonder why you're single? You're not exactly very charming with those statements."
The sigh was clearly audible. "Thanks for being worried about my wellbeing", pushing off Delsin's hand Reggie slowly but surely walked into the direction of the bed. "I'm just asking you to be careful to not pull her into anything bad at this point", that said he let himself fall onto the bed and closed his eyes. Even with all the noises from outside, it didn't take long until he had fallen asleep. If it hadn't been for the fact he was so tired from staying up the whole night, it would have taken him a while to do so. Seattle was way louder than Salmon Bay. All the cars and people. Most of them were on their way to work now while Reggie had to catch up on sleep.
Delsin decided to get some sleep too. After a short stop in the bathroom, he walked back over to the couch. It wasn't as comfortable as the bed by far but had to suffice. If he had to share his bed with someone he preferred that to be a woman instead of his brother.
~ooo~
Evening came and the dark reclaimed the sky when Delsin went out to go meet up with Fetch. It was time - like she had put it - to destroy the top of the drug dealer food chain. According to her, there were several boats in the marina at Pioneer Square which functioned as a warehouse for a two-day old drug delivery. However, those made their way around or into the city in the first place. Fetch wasn't sure how many boats there actually were but luckily the group had a rather interesting symbol to recognize their people: a dolphin.
Delsin believed to remember the fact that the gym bag he had found in the alley close to where he first encountered Fetch, had a dolphin on it too.
So the dolphin was a good thing. It would definitely stick out and make it easier for the two Conduits to find the right boats. The worst thing that could've happened was them searching around for hours because there were quite a few boats laying at anchor. Fetch arrived a little late and decided to make camp on a nearby rooftop from where she helped Delsin. The merits of having a certain range to your powers. The male Conduit was already checking out the docks and had run into some dealers who were, probably, living here on top of using the place as a base of operation. From the distance Fetch took care of those Delsin missed in the chaos or those who tried to sneak up on him from behind.
"Told you I've got your back."
"Thanks."
"Hard to be sure from up here, but I think I spotted a couple of boats with dolphins on them", Fetch noticed while Delsin made his way through another group of dealers.
By now those were laying around the docks everywhere. Hands and feet bound with neon from which they couldn't break free, no matter how hard they tried to. The newfound neon powers had the positive side effect to take out and chain up enemies with a few well-placed shots, making them fall and stay on the ground. Made things a lot easier. Despite being unsure whether or not Fetch was on the same side here, he felt way better to not just kill the men who attacked him and he was sure Reggie would appreciate it too.
After taking out a group of dealers near a houseboat he spotted a dolphin drawn to the side of it. Exploring the boat he found a couple of bags on the backside of the boat, out of sight of prying eyes. Looking through them he found all of them full of drugs. Yes, Fetch wasn't lying about this. "Drugs indeed. Hey Fetch, I'm gonna tag the boats with drugs to make it easier for you to know which to take out."
"Can't you ever go, like, five minutes without tagging stuff?", she laughed. "It's almost like you're married to the spray can."
"Mhm, I wouldn't say I would marry a spray can", no probably not. There were other things and persons who had a way higher rank on that list. He decided to keep that to himself. "By the way Fetch, I'm actually not sure those are 'dolphins', those pictures clearly look like a 'porpoise' to me. It's a common mistake."
"That's why I hate working with boys."
Smiling to himself, Delsin continued his way around the docks finding three boats with drugs plus, both to his and Fetch's surprise, a handful of prostitutes who were kept there. Making sure there were no people on the boats or near them who could get hurt, he told Fetch it was okay to light the boats up. One problem less for the city, one more for the Conduits. By now it was no secret the two of them were here destroying drug stashes.
"Hey D, it looks like we stirred up a hornet's nest. There are a lot of dealers back here and I could need some help."
"On my way."
While Delsin assisted Fetch with taking out the rest of the dealers, Delsin couldn't help but wonder how many of those were around. There had been so much at the docks already and now those guys showed up too. It seemed like new waves of them appeared every few minutes. On top of that, they were armed rather well. It felt like every second person in the city was a dealer or just didn't like Conduits in general. Which wasn't that unlikely as Conduits weren't popular anywhere. This was more than just a hornet's nest. To imagine this city had always been like that was hard for Delsin. He blamed it on the D.U.P. and Augustine. Putting the residents in this situation, letting chaos reign. Being the chaos. It felt good to do something about it, small or big didn't matter. Pinning the last person to the ground Delsin looked around to see if there was someone else lurking in the vicinity. When he didn't spot anyone else, he made his way up to the roof and to Fetch.
"Ready for some fireworks?", she didn't even wait for an answer. Focussing the energy in her hands, Fetch began to shoot neon beams at the boats Delsin had tagged. Watching the boats explode one by one, taking the drugs with them, Delsin realized that Fetch had a few more tricks up her sleeve she didn't feel like sharing with him. He was also glad about the fact she hadn't attacked him with that much power back when he followed her because if she had, that would've been his end.
His eyes wandered over the marina. "That's three less evil dolphin boats now. Good job."
"Three less 'porpoise' boats", she crossed her arms, her gaze set on the blazing boats. "Don't worry. Common mistake."
"And that's why I hate working with girls."
Fetch didn't answer him. Instead, she simply smiled when something in her peripheral caught her attention. A white truck not too far away. She watched two people get inside, people she identified as dealers because of one simple fact: the truck pulling up close to the marina, both of the men getting out and back inside to drive away after seeing the chaos. They clearly hadn't expected their 'hideout' to be gone upon arrival. There was a high chance the truck was full of drugs as well and those were now being carted to a safe place. This was the perfect chance for the two Conduits to spoil the evening for even more people and they sure had fun with that.
Silently and undetected from any prying eyes, they followed the truck via the rooftops. They made sure to stay in the blind spot of the truck during their chase. There was always a possibility to be spotted after all. When the truck came to a stop in an alley Delsin and Fetch stopped on the roof right above. Looking over the edge of the roof Delsin watched the men leave the truck. They walked over to a couple more men who seemed to have waited for them and began talking. Even without hearing what they said, alone their gestures told Delsin that they weren't too happy. The attack at the marina, Fetch had done her homework. As he turned to look at her he could see her eyes focused on the men below. "So what's your plan?"
"Get 'em."
That wasn't even a plan! Before Delsin could say anything in protest he had to watch as Fetch jumped down from the roof and landed between the men who immediately took out their guns to attack her. Not wanting to be left out of the fun Delsin followed Fetch to help her. Not that she needed the help. The few men in the alley weren't hard to deal with, not by oneself and certainly not for two Conduits. While Delsin used the stasis bubbles to hinder the men from moving, Fetch shot them so they ended up on the ground. Wrapped in neon binds they lay on the asphalt like presents under a Christmas tree.
"I'm surprised", after the men were taken care of he walked towards the truck. "We make a good team."
"Guess you didn't think I'm able to work together with someone huh?", she laughed as she caught up to Delsin. Even before they reached the truck they could hear voices coming from the inside. Looking at each other before opening the back they weren't that surprised when - besides a rather large amount of drugs - several prostitutes came to view. After a short speech from Delsin they started to run away but Fetch felt the need to add something to his words. "Start to become clean! There won't be any drugs left in this city soon", she would make sure of that. She turned to Delsin. "You okay?"
He had sat down on the load floor, his eyes staring down the street. "I was wondering.. do you think a couple of low-life Bio-terrorists will ever get thanked for saving people? Just like we did now?"
"Yeah, you saved me."
He rolled his eyes. "Bio-terrorist saving Bio-terrorist - not sure I get plus points for that."
"Your brother sure will be grateful for that", she took a few steps. "That you showed me the right way I mean. And I'm sure there will be other people too eventually. I bet your girlfriend is one of those for example."
"My girlfriend?", he asked surprised.
"Are you going to tell me you don't have one? Seriously D.? Half of the women in the city - single or not - look at you without seeing the big bad terrorist. I'd be a little worried if married women were trying to get into my pants."
"Would be the same for me if I was female."
She shrugged. "I'm more concerned about the word 'married' in that sentence."
Wait. What?
Fetch started laughing and playfully boxed the other Conduit into the shoulder. "No sweat. I can tell you're not a city boy, some things here are different and sometimes you need time to find where you belong. That can be a long and rather interesting journey. Especially in our situation. So..", she began to scrutinize him. Delsin was new to this whole Conduit business, she had lived with her powers and the resulting reactions, however different they were, for years. Her journey still wasn't over. She wasn't sure if Seattle was simply a stop or her future home, neither was she sure if someone would eventually wait for her to come back to them. Seeing all those women flock around Delsin, there had to be someone waiting for him other than his brother. "Girlfriend, yes or no?"
He started to ponder about the question. "I don't really have an answer to that", Delsin had to admit. "There is someone.. as in someone I like but.. I don't how to describe the situation."
"Complicated because you're different?", she jumped onto the loading dock and began to inspect the drugs. It would be best to dump them in the water somewhere close by. Same for the truck. The faster and the shorter the way, the better. "I mean: does she know you're different and hates you because of it or.."
"She knows.. she doesn't seem to care about me being a Conduit. She talks to me like I'm normal, treats me like I'm normal..", by now he was right next to Fetch. His eyes moving over all those boxes as his thoughts inevitably drifted to Yana. "My brother is worried that she might get into danger if she stays around me or I around her for that matter. Looking at this evening I think this might actually be true."
"Who knows, maybe she likes danger", Fetch tried to reassure him. If that woman knew what he was and still wanted to spend time with him, she had to know it could get dangerous for her. "You wanna get Augustine right? So when all of this is over you take your maybe girlfriend home."
Yes, he wanted to defeat Augustine. Maybe it would get better once the D.U.P. was defeated and Yana would join him in Salmon Bay - if she wanted to do so. Her whole life was happening in this city after all. Her work, her friends, everything she knew. He shook his head. It was too early for thoughts like that, way too early. No matter how much he enjoyed the thought of getting up in the morning with birds chirping and the waves crashing against the shore while Yana was sleeping at his side.
He was worse than any teenager in love.
