Another chapter.
After not being in the mood I guess to continue this, the inFamous fever caught me again. I wanna blame myself for playing Festival of Blood recently. :)
While up until now most of this was just a translation, the next chapters will differ from the original since I decided to change a few things. The outcome will still be the same though, just the way is going to be different. I hope you continue to enjoy reading. See you in the next chapter.
Three days after the conversation between the brothers, Reggie was out and about. He didn't have a goal in mind as he did so and simply enjoyed the fresh air and a bit of sun hoping it would last a few more days.
He hadn't seen his brother since then but through news and police radio, Reggie knew that more and more drug dealers had been picked up throughout the city. And picked up meant they had been subdued with neon handcuffs. That was how it was described anyway. It made him happy that both Conduits took what he had said to heart. He didn't doubt his brother would keep in mind to be careful not to hurt anyone he would be fighting too bad, but when it came to Fetch or maybe he should say Abigail, he wasn't sure about it. At least not until he heard the reports. It appeared he had misjudged her.
On occasion, he would ask Delsin if he would be so kind to arrange a meeting with Fetch so Reggie could apologize to her as well. He had mentioned it during their late-night talk. That he wanted to talk to the female Conduit at one point, either one on one or when Delsin was with them.
Reggie wondered if he should call his brother now. He had time and he hadn't talked to Delsin for a while. So why not? Maybe all three of them could meet and talk about their doings from the past few days. One hand was already going for his phone when he spotted a woman walking towards him with a smile.
"Long time no see", it was Sarah, one of Yana's coworkers. "Reggie, right?", she had only heard his name in passing and Yana had talked about him once - because Sarah had been curious. Who could blame her? Reggie was an attractive man. Sarah could acknowledge that without feeling bad because she was married.
"Ah yes, it has been a while", forgotten was the thought of calling Delsin.
Sarah nodded slightly. "I'm on my way back to the store, did you talk to Yana recently? I mean after what happened with Augustine?"
"Augustine?", what did she have to do with Yana now?
"Oh, you didn't know about it? Augustine came to the store but Yana didn't talk about it to us. She had been quite rattled and after she was sent home I looked at the surveillance video. Is she in some kind of trouble?"
Reggie gave Sarah a confused look. "I.. no, I don't think so. I haven't spoken to her for several days", Yana hadn't mentioned Augustine once. Just what had happened? "Is it okay if I take a look at the video?"
"Yeah sure, I don't have a problem with that", she motioned for Reggie to follow her. The store was situated on the next street so it wasn't a long walk and once they arrived Reggie was introduced to Michelle - the store manager - who gave him a friendly greeting and didn't seem to mind Sarah decided to show him the video of the day Augustine had been here.
"The recordings have no sound, so we don't know what this was about", Michelle explained. She had joined the other two and watched as the pictures moved across the screen even though she had seen them before and knew what would happen.
Reggie focused his attention on the screen. At first, he saw Yana and Sarah standing in the store, then the latter left and Sarah mentioned that she went to get breakfast because neither of them had anything to do. After that, it didn't take long until the front door opened with Augustine marching inside and looking around for a bit until Yana appeared and spotted her. Both of them began to talk and based on her posture and the look on her face, Reggie could tell that Yana was angry at Augustine for some reason. There was no way to deny it and no matter what kind of words or maybe even insults she was throwing at Augustine, she wasn't happy about it. He was startled just as much about the concrete shards shooting out of the ground as Yana seemed to be at that moment. What followed was even more talking until Augustine disappeared and along with her the shards. Yana immediately dropped to the ground and sat there even after Sarah came back, rushing to the young woman's side.
"She was a complete mess", Sarah remembered. "She didn't even talk to me."
"I sent her home on leave", Michelle added with a calm voice. It was audible that she was worried but also didn't know what to make out of the situation because Yana refused to talk to anyone. "I hope she doesn't have any kind of problem with whatever this is. I'm aware Yana doesn't like the D.U.P. a lot, not that anyone does but Augustine coming here like that.. I like Yana but this doesn't put me or my store in a good light."
Understandable. Augustine was the D.U.P. and if you were linked to them it wouldn't count as a positive thing in the least. Going by the state Seattle was in at the moment it could only get worse if someone thought you were working with them or whatever kind of connection there could be.
"I'll go and look after her, I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for this", at this point Reggie felt like he was trying to protect Yana as she wasn't here and couldn't do so. Because he already had an explanation.
Piece by piece he put together all the little clues he had been given.
"Her mother came to her workplace."
"She's a monster. She doesn't have any kind of feelings. You would understand if you meet her."
Yana was the daughter of Brooke Augustine.
There was no other way and given this new revelation it was time to pay Yana a visit to ask her about it. Especially to find out why she hadn't told him or Delsin about it; not that Reggie wasn't able to tell why she wouldn't. No one would go and talk about their family when a person like Augustine was part of it. Maybe even more so when she was your parent and not just an aunt you saw a couple of times a year.
~ooo~
Yana was standing in her kitchen, cooking up a little something to eat. Her eyes moved towards the balcony once in a while. Since it was rather hot outside she had opened the door and Brownie took his chance to get comfortable in the sun. He was resting on the table, paws stretched out and eyes closed. He appeared to be perfectly content with everything.
"Can't believe you're not feeling warm with all that fur of yours. You're one crazy feline", she shook her head.
All she wanted was to stay inside, in the shadows. The warm air was bad enough for her. Even though she didn't particularly dislike summer or warm temperatures, she preferred the colder weather. It was so much easier to put on more layers of clothing or blankets to stay warm in winter and still be comfortable. But in summer, as in when temperatures were so high you began to sweat doing nothing, you could only strip down to your skin. Luckily enough it wasn't that bad because those were the last days of summer. However, since she was cooking the heat of the oven was making things a little worse for her.
While the stir-fry needed a little more time cooking, Yana began to clean up the things she didn't need anymore and put them away. Contrary to the first day after the incident with her mother Yana's apartment looked somewhat decent. She simply had left things as they were and the chaos reigned until yesterday evening when the need to clean up was unbearable. Brownie was happy with that as well. All the dirty dishes and the dirt in general was nothing he enjoyed to see or live in.
After the last few glasses were cleaned and back in their cupboard, the food was ready as well and Yana took a plate and filled it up. The smell crept into her nose as she slowly made her way over to the couch where she took a seat. Before she was able to get comfy and start eating, the doorbell rang. Sighing she got up reluctantly and placed the plate on the coffee table. Whoever was a the door bothering her, they had chosen the wrong time. But there was no helping because once again the doorbell gave a signal.
By now Yana felt even more bothered. How fast was she supposed to be at her door? What if she hadn't been home or was taking a shower? Either no one would open or it would take even longer. Patience definitely wasn't a strong trait in the person who was stopping by. As she reached the door she looked through the peephole to make sure it wasn't some crazy person or in general someone she didn't want to see. Yana had one neighbor who liked to talk to you when you ran into them and those talks, they could take a while and the neighbor had no problem to follow you to talk more. And so Yana was surprised to spot Reggie standing in front of her door.
Opening the door she moved her head to the side. "Didn't I tell you I would call if I needed something?"
"You did", he didn't even wait until Yana welcomed him inside but instead pushed Yana to the side as he entered her apartment. Yana, being even more confused now, closed the door and followed him suit to ask why he was here. She didn't get to that though. "When did you intend to tell us?"
Yana raised her eyebrow in question. "Tell you what?"
Reggie turned towards her. Just what hadn't she told him that he was storming into her place like that now. "That Augustine is your mother."
Taking a couple of steps back Yana shook her head slightly. There was no way he could know. And if he truly did, how did he find out? "How..?"
"I ran into Sarah and talked to her. She and your boss are worried you're having problems with Augustine since she came to the store - I saw the surveillance video by the way", he made a pause in which he kept a close eye on the young woman in front of him to see her reaction. She looked caught. Like a child who had broken something and was now waiting to be punished. "Yana, I'm not an idiot: Augustine and your mother, they're the same person right?"
She couldn't lie about it any longer. What good would it do? Reggie had hit the nail on the head and if he had managed to find out by himself after seeing all the evidence that had been so obvious in the first place, there was no reason to try and continue lying to him. It had been bad enough to do so for the time that had already passed. Especially because Reggie, and Delsin as well, had been so honest with her.
And so she slowly nodded. "Yes.. she is."
"Why didn't you say anything?", was he serious? The look in his eyes told Yana that yes, he was serious, and she found it hard to understand. Was this some kind of parallel universe she had been sucked in where the persons who suffered way more than her because of the same person suddenly didn't seem to mind anymore? "You believe I would be angry about it right? To be honest, I'm more disappointed than angry because you didn't say anything about it", it was easy for him to tell that Yana wasn't understanding a thing that was happening right now. She clearly anticipated a different reaction when someone found out whose daughter she was. After all that Augustine was responsible for, most of all after what she had done to the tribe, it was easy for Reggie to understand how confused Yana must've have been. But how in the world could he make her responsible for something she wasn't able to control?
"Are you serious? You should be able to tell that I'm not simply telling anyone about it. Joe and my best friend are the only people who know because I was never worried about their reactions.. about those looks who judge you without knowing who you are", rubbing her hands over her arms, Yana shook her head. It was still so hard for her to fathom how Reggie could be so calm. Maybe because he was older than her, more of an adult and thus he saw things from a different point of view. "Augustine attacked you and your friends. Your family. She hurt them and it appears that she's perfectly fine with killing innocents and you think I'll walk up to you being like 'hey, by the way the person who tortured your tribe and is the reason you're here is my mother'?"
"We trusted you enough to tell you why we're here. About Delsin being a Conduit though to be fair, if he had listened to me there would have been no need for that. But nonetheless", he walked closer to Yana. "Seeing how much you mean to my brother by now there is no doubt he would have told you. I can only speak for me right now but I don't think Delsin would react any different when I say that we don't correlate what she does onto you."
"She hurt Betty and the others.."
"Right: she did. Not you", reaching out to her Reggie grabbed her arm before pulling her into a hug. "I would never make you responsible for something that Augustine did. I know what it's like to bottle up things inside and what you're doing is the same. I don't care whether or not you're her daughter, all I wish is that you would have been honest so I wouldn't have found it out like that."
He had met Yana without knowing who her mother was and never imagined it to be Augustine. It simply didn't seem possible. She and Yana were so different. It was so easy for him to tell because right here and now when Yana wrapped her arms around Reggie and her body began to shake as the first tears made their way over her face, she felt so different from Augustine. Or what he expected her to be like. Reggie couldn't tell the reason why she was crying. If it was because she had been scared that he would push her away and now felt relief that he wasn't or because she was afraid of her mother.
Which was reasonable.
The video from the store was still fresh in his mind. Reggie had to acknowledge that Augustine might be able to hurt Yana and whatever both women had talked about that day, it made Yana so scared that she decided to not spent time with him or Delsin.
".. I'm sorry", her voice was shaky.
"I know", pushing Yana back to look at her, Reggie wiped away her tears. "Let's sit down and talk about it okay?"
Yana's blue eyes were fixated on Reggie's face before she slowly nodded. "Okay."
Sitting down on her couch, with Reggie taking the place next to her, eased her mind a little. Even more so when Brownie who had watched the scene from the balcony door made his way over to her to sit on her lap. Stroking his fur had a soothing effect on her and also helped her to overcome the initial reluctance to talk.
"I don't really know where to start."
"Wherever you want. You don't need to tell me anything you don't feel comfortable sharing. To be honest I'm mostly interested in what happened at the store. I'm aware that whatever Augustine and you talked about is the reason why you said Delsin and I shouldn't come by any more or am I wrong?"
She shook her head. "No, you're right. Um.. there were a lot of things she said. I told you a bit about it. Everything I told you regarding my mother was the truth. She um.. she made it very clear that I should stay away from Delsin. I guess him being here and destroying more and more of the D.U.P. doesn't sit right with her and.. I would call it 'she did her homework' because she knows about Joe and about my best friend. More specifically where she is right now and with whom she is", Yana cast her eyes down on Brownie who was enjoying the attention. "Augustine told me that if I would continue seeing Delsin she would hurt me by hurting the people I love."
"So you did what you thought was the right thing to do: tell us to stay away so Augustine would have no reason to hurt them", he noted and got a nod in response.
It made sense to him. Even though it was a fucked up thing to do. In a way it calmed him because, at least that was what he assumed that moment, it also meant that Augustine wouldn't physically hurt her daughter. Maybe there was a bit of humanity left in her. As crazy as it might sound.
"You said that you met her once before. That was after New Marais right?"
"Yeah. I wished it had been the only time. What happened at work.. I don't know. I.. I don't think I've ever been so scared of something or someone in my life before."
"It's understandable."
Remembering the day he had brought her home and told her about how parents always loved you left a bad aftertaste now. Though, and that was something he didn't want to say out loud, in some weird way Augustine seemed to care. Thinking about it it almost appeared as if Augustine had pushed Yana away so she wouldn't be in any kind of danger. The meeting of them had been after New Marais, after the D.U.P. had been founded. So at that point, Augustine had already established her powers. Now she told Yana to stay away from Delsin, yet another Conduit.
That raised another question. "How does Augustine know you're in contact with my brother?"
"She saw us. I don't know if Delsin told you but after he went to the Space Needle he came to look for me. We spent the day together, went to get coffee", she paused for a few moments. Yana had enjoyed their time together, more than she wanted to admit. A part of her wished to be able to go back to that day because back then everything had been fine. "I guess because of what happened Augustine had everyone look for Delsin and when she found him, well, I was with him. I don't think she knew I was living in Seattle before that moment."
Reggie let out a sigh. Of course, it would be, in a way, Delsin's fault. He doubted that it had been his brother's intention to get Yana into trouble, that was one of the last things he seemed to want. Neither did Reggie want it. To think they had talked about this exact thing a few days ago felt so strange now. Worst of all, at that point, Yana was already in trouble without them knowing.
"I'm not sure if she keeps an eye on me constantly now but.. I don't want to risk my friends getting hurt so, I'm sorry to say this but it's better if you would leave."
"I understand that. Listen, once you're more comfortable with talking about it I'll be there and.. I told you that I wished you would have been the one to tell me instead of me finding out by pure accident so I think you definitely should be the one to tell Delsin. If you want I'll be there when you tell him. I understand that it might take a lot of time until you're ready but just so you know, I'm here for you. No matter what", for Reggie, it was hard to imagine how his brother might react. He himself didn't like Augustine for what she had done but since he didn't have powers to fight her, he had kind of accepted the fate of his friends back home. In a way, he had almost given up. Something that wasn't a possibility for Delsin.
Ever since they had left Salmon Bay Delsin's goal was to get to Augustine, get her powers and through that be able to get the concrete out of the people home. At this point, he would do anything to help them. Maybe even kill Augustine if there was no other way. Would he think different now or once Yana would tell him she was related to the woman he was after? Would he be angry? Probably.
Nodding Yana spoke. "I know and just so you know, I did intend to tell you both at one point. I really did but you have to understand that it's nothing you simply tell anyone. Especially not if you barely know the person. However", she continued as she looked up from Brownie and towards Reggie. "I trust you. Even if it might not look like it. I simply don't want to get anyone in trouble."
"I know and that is why I'll be taking my leave now", saying that he stood up, gave Brownie a few scratches behind his ear and smiled at Yana. "I'm gonna say the same thing like last time I left: call us if there's something we can do to help."
All Yana did was nod as Reggie gave her a pat on the shoulder before walking towards the front door. Stopping there for a moment he looked back at Yana, he wanted to say more but it felt like a wrong idea and so he left without saying anything more other than goodbye.
Walking down the stairs Reggie wondered about what had just happened, about what Yana had told him. It felt so weird to think she was Augustine's daughter but now that he knew it was hard for him to unsee it. And yes, he understood why Yana wouldn't tell him, Delsin, anyone. If he had been in the same situation it wouldn't be any different for him. Augustine had, over the past years, hurt a lot of people. Not only Conduits but people without powers. Reggie had seen what Fetch was able to do and yes, maybe she began to change now but other Conduits wouldn't so if they found out about Yana.. who knew what could happen.
Maybe they would outright attack her. Kill her.
Suddenly Reggie wished he had never found out because starting from now, he was going to lie to his brother's face and it felt wrong.
At that moment his phone rang, indicating an incoming message. He assumed it would Delsin but when Reggie pulled the phone from his pocket the message came from an unknown number and suddenly, thinking back to the conversation he had with Yana just now he wondered if this was Augustine or someone else from the D.U.P. who was telling him that he made a big mistake by coming here. But upon reading the first few words he realized it was far from that.
"Hey, it's Fetch. I got the number from D, he told me you wanted to talk to me. Not sure why but give me a call I guess?"
It seemed as if Delsin had already taken a first step in helping his brother and Fetch getting along and Reggie didn't need to ask for it anymore. Smiling he decided to call her back right away. The day had already turned out different than he had planned and there was nothing to do for him anyway. So he might as well spend the rest of it talking to Fetch, apologizing about the things he had said.
"Uh, hey", Reggie spoke when Fetch answered. "Thanks for the message. If it's fine with you I know a place where we can meet. In an hour?"
