"So that's that..." Kagome sighed, "Eighteen years old and I'm already getting married..."
Rai smiled, "Not technically. You haven't sent in a signed agreement yet,"
"There isn't an option in this, mom. They made it perfectly clear that should I deny them, then my past will be made public."
"...Ministry of Magic...it still feels as though I know that name."
Kagome watched her mother stand and wander off in thought. "...wizards...witches...magic and wands...am I really supposed to believe in all of this?" Taking a pen, Kagome sighed before looking at the owl that was still waiting for her reply. Resting with closed eyes on the curtain rod above the window. Grabbing a blank piece of paper, she wondered curiously just how this would affect her life from here on out.
"Dear..." Kagome closed her eyes and frowned, "what was his name?" She grabbed the letter and read over the signatures at the bottom. "Dear Mr. Shacklebolt, I would be..." Kagome laughed, "...not so pleased to accept the conditions of this letter. As I have read over the history of this magical 'world', I find it interesting that you guys would have so much trouble with one wizard, but then I guess that I haven't much room to speak, considering my own past. I will await you..." she looked at the bird and frowned, "...owl. Not sincerely, Higurashi, Kagome."
"Wow..."
Kagome looked behind her and found her brother leaning over the couch and staring at her letter to the Ministry. "Something to say?"
Souta raised his hands defensively, a sheepish grin spreading wildly across his face. "No! Nothing at all; by the way, I found Shippou."
Kagome looked back a bit further and found Shippou playing with Buyo. "Shippou, where were you?"
"Ah, Mama...there were so many of those, I followed them, but they started splitting up, and I got lost." He said, all the while pointing at the owl staring at him cautiously.
Kagome held her arm out and the owl came quietly, "can you take this to the Ministry?"
The owl gave a soft coo sound before leaving out the door as Souta opened it for the bird.
"You can't have a normal life like the rest of the world, can you?" Souta asked as he plopped himself down on the couch next to his sister and Shippou.
Kagome laughed, "would you really want me to?"
Sitting in thought for a moment, Souta shook his head, "Nah, it's pretty cool having a one-in-a-million sister."
"Oh, is that what I am?" She gave her brother a hug as their mom came down from upstairs. "Hey, you figure out why the name sounded so familiar?"
"Yes...it was mentioned in a letter from your father." Rai said solemnly, the topic being one that she'd never been too happy with.
Kagome and Souta went quiet too, having never talked much about the father who had left their mother, and them, alone.
"..." Kagome stared at the letter as her mom held it out to her. She couldn't recall a single thing about him. A man without a face, was all she could remember...though, she had a detailed impression of his back as he walked out on them.
"Read it."
Sighing, Kagome let her brother go and took the old letter, the paper quality was really high, it was engraved in a shiny green emblem, an Old English Font 'RB' was on the front. Unfolding the letter, she read the written words scrawled neatly across the page. 'My beloved Raiko, I wished to see you after my departure, but my past has come to me at such a grave time, and I must leave you, Kagome and our soon-to-be. Trust in me that I would never have left if given the choice...but with the Ministry of Magic chasing my heels, and the Dark Lord...I just can't risk them finding my family. I love you, and how I wish I could tell you of the history I've tried so hard to hide...but know that it was never my intention to leave you. One day, you will find out the truth, I only hope you can forgive me. Sincerest Love, Regulus.'
Kagome frowned, "so...what, does that mean dad was a...wizard?"
"I thought it was some made up story, he was always telling me silly things like using magic to set fire to his potions professor's hat in his second year, but I thought it was all to make me laugh, as it usually did. I never once thought he was telling me the truth."
"...I want to find out his story."
"What was that, Kagome?"
Kagome smiled, "I want to find out his story, and I think going to England, taking part in this Marriage Law...this will be how I find my answers. I think it was fate...that the Magical World my father used to be a part of, has found me..."
"Yes...so do I..." Rai sighed, "Shall we pack your things and prepare you for your departure?"
Nodding, Kagome turned to Shippou, "I'm sorry, Shippou, but for now, I want you to stay with Souta and Mom."
"...I understand." Shippou sighed, smiling quickly after though, he laughed, "just be sure not to forget about me!"
"Never!"
