Chapter 27

Mission Impossible

Time continued to be Tyson's worst enemy. He was now convinced that patience was no virtue he could ever master.

As the days passed, Kai closed himself off more and more. He would spend many hours by himself in his room or in the dojo. He also didn't sleep well. It was obvious from his increasingly pale face and the circles beneath his eyes that grew darker by the day. Yet he still tried to be the new Kai Tyson had gotten used to having around. It was that, that almost broke Tyson's heart. He felt that it put more strain on Kai, that he had to put in the effort to be a good boyfriend. Tyson didn't want to be an extra burden. He didn't know what to do, though. He could distance himself from Kai, so he wouldn't have to pretend to be fine. But how could he leave Kai to himself, in such a difficult time? What kind of boyfriend would that make him? No, he would not let Kai go through this alone. That only left him to carry on with things. But business as usual didn't seem to be the ideal solution either. Tyson had spent many hours brooding over this topic, many of which were math lessons and chemistry lessons, or any lesson except for history, really. History was something he'd found a new interest in. Only to be able to take some of his new knowledge home and brag about it to Kai. When Tyson said brag, it meant he told Kai of a king or some historic event he'd learned about, and more often than not Kai would give him a bouquet of background information on the topic. Tyson was honestly wondering if Kai's brain was normal. He felt also very proud to have such a brilliant boyfriend. The result of Tyson's brooding was that he'd try to balance both, the distancing and the being there. Which sounded impossible in his mind, and maybe it was, but Tyson was still determined to make it possible - where there was a will, and stuff. His very own mission impossible.

So they were currently sitting on Tyson's bed and watching a movie on Tyson's laptop. Tyson had his head rested against Kai's shoulder, but that was as far as he dared go. It was a charade, in a way. Being so close to Kai physically, but so far away emotionally hurt. But this was probably the compromise. What Kai needed. Or was it? Tyson didn't know. He bit his lower lip, to swallow down his own sorrow. Not the time to be lovesick. It was his own damn fault for not listening to Ray. But pain washed over him like a wave. He suddenly missed Kai so much, it physically hurt. Old Kai, new Kai, he didn't care which one, but he wanted one of them back. A tear forced its way from the corner of his eye. Tyson wiped it away quickly. He didn't want Kai to see.

Too quickly, as it turned out. The sudden movement caused Kai to turn away from the movie.

"Everything okay?"

Kai lifted a hand and brushed a strand of hair out of Tyson's face. A gentle gesture. When they were together he was still incredibly sweet. Only... well, distant. Like his mind and his heart really were elsewhere. Autopilot Kai...

"Yeah, sure," Tyson hurried to say.

He made sure to make his voice sound light, happy. A smile to support his words. It should have worked. It would have worked, if only Kai didn't know him so well. Like Tala, he'd gotten way too good at reading Tyson. Or maybe he just wasn't as good as covering up his feelings as he thought.

Kai set up straight, forcing Tyson to take his head off Kai's shoulder. When he looked up, crimson eyes stared back at him. Their look was so intense, Tyson felt as if they were looking down to the bottom of his soul. He averted his eyes.

"No, it's not," Kai said.

After a moment of silence, he added, "It's me, isn't it!"

Tyson's mind was racing to come up with the right answer. Yes, it was Kai. No way in hell he'd tell him though because that would only add to his burden. But apparently he was a pretty bad liar, so what now?

"Off day," he said vaguely. "Got yelled at at school."

Which wasn't a lie. His homeroom teacher had personally had the honor. Only it wasn't the entire truth.

"I'm sorry," Kai said.

Tyson had a feeling he didn't mean the telling off at school.

"Don't worry about it," he replied, not meaning that incident either.

In a weak moment he wrapped his arms around Kai and pressed his face against Kai's chest. He needed to feel he was still there.

"Just for a moment," he muttered.

Kai placed a kiss on the top of his head and wrapped his arms around Tyson as well.

"As many moments as you want," he murmured.

And for those moments, Tyson felt he had Kai back.

That night, Tyson jolted awake. He lay in the darkness, confused as to why he was awake. He usually had a very healthy sleep. Then he heard it, the muffled scream. It was all too familiar. Kai. In a split‑second Tyson was out of bed. He stormed across the hall into Kai's room and switched on the light by the bed. Kai's face was glistening with sweat and he was tossing back and forth. Tyson grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him a little.

"Kai," he said in a soft voice. "Kai, wake up. I'm here. It's all good."

The nightmare had Kai firmly in its grasp. Tyson shook him more firmly. His voice remained soft though. Someone having a nightmare didn't need to wake up to someone yelling at them. Actually, nobody did. Tyson wished Gramps would share his sentiments. Unfortunately, he was a firm believer in waking people with a war cry. Tyson shoved aside that thought and shook Kai once more. Finally, Kai stopped tossing. His eyelids fluttered and his eyes opened. Tyson sighed in relief. He helped Kai sit up and handed him the glass of water that had been standing on the nightstand. Then he got up and grabbed a clean shirt for Kai. The one he was wearing was drenched with sweat.

What a hell of nightmare it must have been. That, or...

He handed Kai the clean shirt. As Kai changed, Tyson stole a glance at Kai's naked upper body. He was only a teenage boy, after all. Kai's upper body was still slim, but lean and-… when on earth had Kai regained a six pack? Well, hint of a six-pack, nothing compared to the rock-hard abs he used to have... but still! The guy had been in a freaking coma. The fact that he had even a hint of six pack was about as unfair as it could get. How?! When Kai pulled the new shirt down, Tyson fingers inched to lift it back up. He wasn't done looking. It was then he realized that the timing couldn't be worse. Seriously… So he shook his head to rid himself of the thought.

He looked at Kai.

"Are you okay?"

Kai nodded. He didn't meet Tyson's eyes.

"Sure."

That was about as honest an answer as Tyson had earlier given Kai, and like Kai earlier, Tyson didn't believe him even for a second. He sat down on the side of the bed. Despite his close/not-so-close mission impossible he had to do something. Kai look like he was about to break into tears. He took Kai's hand in his and held it tightly.

"I'm here, if you need me," he said.

Again, Kai nodded.

Tyson went on, "I love you. All sides of you."

Kai was silent. He still didn't meet Tyson's eyes. Tyson swallowed hard. He felt rejected, and it hurt. Only reminding himself of the kind of pain Kai must be in allowed him to pull himself together. Maybe Kai needed some time to put his thoughts in order before he could go back to sleep. Maybe he needed space. Maybe Tyson needed to give him that space, even if it went against every fiber of his body.

Tyson squeezed Kai's hand and got up.

"I'll let you get back to sleep."

He'd barely turned when a hand closed around his wrist and whirled him back around. With a surprised yelp Tyson tumbled forwards and fell face first into Kai's arms. Kai's arms closed around him and he felt Kai press his face against shoulder.

"Stay," Kai murmured.

Tyson nodded. Maybe Kai wanted him here after all. He smiled a little and shifted himself in a more comfortable position, careful not to break the hug. Once he'd successfully done that he suddenly realized the fabric over his left shoulder was damp. It took him a moment to put two and two together, then it hit him: Kai was crying. Silent at first, but then his shoulders began to tremble and he let out a little sob. Tyson had never seen Kai cry. No matter what, he'd never seen him shed a single tear. And they been through some pretty bad stuff. Without hesitation he slung his arms around Kai and pulled him close.

"I'm not going anywhere."

Tyson didn't know how long he'd sat there, gently stroking Kai's shoulder and whispering soothing words, when Kai suddenly sat up. Kai rubbed his eyes and cleared his throat.

"Old me will probably be really embarrassed," he said, his voice hoarse.

Tyson turned so he could see Kai's face better.

"He has no reason to," he said.

He reached out a brushed over Kai's cheek.

"You're so strong, Kai. Look how much you've had to endure. Through it all, you never whined or complained. You always took it with grace. And now... I can't even imagine what you are going through. Remembering horrible things, without a warning or a background... You are incredibly strong Kai. Tears don't change that fact. It also takes strength to admit you're hurt. Don't you ever be embarrassed."

They locked eyes. There was pain in those crimson eyes, and fear, but there was also happiness and hope. Tyson leaned forward and brushed his lips against Kai's. He couldn't restrain himself any longer. His whole body was longing for Kai. He'd had way too little of Kai's lips these past days. Not wanting to lose control over himself completely, Tyson pulled back again. Despite the situation, he felt tingly and his heart fluttered. No helping it. He was still head over heels in love with this boy.

Kai pulled him in his arms again and Tyson gladly let him.

"I'm sorry, Tyson."

Tyson nodded, but stayed silent. In case Kai wanted to say more he didn't want to interrupt him.

And after a while Kai continued, "I ... I can't tell you... not yet. I-... There are many pieces missing. I-... It's like... I can't place them. It's..."

Tyson nodded again.

This time, he replied, "I'm always here. Tell me when you're ready."

"But you-... we..."

"You don't have to tell me what it is. It's not important that I know. Not now at least. But I'd be happy if you-... I want to know how you are, and what I can do. I want to be with you, be there for you and help you through this. I-..." Tyson's voice trailed off.

"I'm sorry," Kai murmured.

He really was, Tyson could tell from the sound of his voice.

In an attempt to lighten the mood he said teasingly, "If you're really sorry, there's some chemistry homework I've been dreading to do. Math homework, too. And Japanese, biology, …"

Kai wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He managed a cricket grin.

"Have you been doing any homework lately?"

Tyson shrugged and grinned back. Kai locked eyes with him. Then he suddenly leaned forward and pressed his lips against Tyson's, his hand finding the back of Tyson's neck. Tyson responded instantly. They kissed hungrily, like they hadn't seen each other for a while. And in a way, that was true. Tyson wrapped his arms around Kai and grabbed on to the back of his shirt, as if to keep him from leaving. Kai didn't plan on it. He leaned further forward, until Tyson lay flat on his back and he was kneeling above him. Not even once did their lips part throughout it. Tyson's fingers trailed up and down Kai's back. When they reached the hem of Kai's shirt, that was hanging down quite loosely (Tyson silently congratulated himself on his choice of shirt), they slipped underneath. Tyson ended the kiss and locked eyes with Kai as his fingers brushed along Kai's sides. He felt a slight shiver run through Kai, but he didn't stop him. Tyson let his fingers glide over Kai's chest, down to his stomach. Slowly, he traced the outlines of Kai's muscles. He saw Kai bite his lower lip. Damn, he was hot. Tyson slung his arms around Kai and pulled him down to him. Their lips practically clashed together, were moving against each other faster and harder than before. His shirt rode up and Tyson gasped when he suddenly felt Kai's skin against his. Using every bit of self‑restraint he pulled away. It was a now or never thing. Not that Tyson would have minded going with 'never'. This was probably not the right time though. They looked at each other, cheeks flushed and slightly out of breath.

Tyson cupped Kai's face with his hands and stroked his cheeks with his thumbs.

"I've missed you," he said.

Kai shifted his weight on one arm, lifted his free arm and placed his hand over Tyson's.

"I'm here."

"Yes." Tyson smiled. "Yes you are."

Kai smiled back. Then he rolled to his side. They lay next to each other, with only their shoulders and hands touching, until they both drifted off to sleep. Just before he fell asleep Tyson thought he'd never felt closer to Kai.

A/N: One less thing standing in the way of their happy ending! Getting closer... Hope you enjoyed this guys and stay safe. ~Bird
