Yet Another Perk
Seamus was as giddy as the rest of the sixth-years sitting around Gryffindor table as the flyer advertising Apparating lessons was passed from hand to hand and then snatched back for re-examination. Still, that didn't stop him from noticing how unimpressed and, frankly, glum Dean was. That would have been uncharacteristic enough as it was, but it was especially odd on a way like this.
While Ron went on a tangent about one of his brothers Splinching during their first Apparition exam to the delighted and grossed out squeals of the other Gryffindors, Dean was just munching on his cereal as per usual, bundled up in a sweater he had absolutely stolen from Seamus' side of the space between their beds. Still, Seamus wasn't going to bring that up now. He just slid down the bench, closer to Dean, and poked his friend through the hole on the sweater's sleeve he was more than familiar with.
"Hey," Seamus said. "Cheer up. Take a whiff of this beautiful day. Apparating lessons are coming!"
"For you maybe," Dean mumbled. He shoved another spoonful of cocoa cereal into his mouth so forcefully that a cascade of milk droplets made their way back into the bowl.
Seamus arched an eyebrow.
"All sixth years get them," Seamus said. "It's basically part of the curriculum, we'll all go together and learn together, it'll be fun."
"I can't," Dean said. "Because of my seizures, remember? They don't give you a driver's license if you're epileptic."
It took Seamus a second to connect the dots in the same way that his friends had. Then he remembered that cars required licenses and licenses had to be acquired by Muggles one by one with quite a lot of paperwork. Dad had definitely mentioned this, and Dean was definitely confused.
"Dean, Apparating's different," Seamus said. "Anyone can Apparate and get their license if they're good enough at the magic behind it."
Dean's eyes widened and he turned away from his cereal and back towards Seamus. He opened his mouth and closed it again, repeating the incredulous motion another two times before blinking a bunch. Dean was a man of few words, but he could be quite eloquent when he wanted to be. Seamus had rarely ever seen him speechless like this.
"You mean… I could get an Apparating license?" Dean said. He grinned. "I could still, you know… get around like everybody else?"
"Yes," Seamus said.
Dean turned back to his cereal, brown eyes wide with shock and mouth still agap. He didn't say anything for a while longer and resolved to just shake his head.
"Magic really is the gift that just keeps giving, isn't it?" he finally said with a grin.
