Mischievous Mates
Recap: Our three main men duke it out in the forest. Mara and Loki talk and bicker while they wait on the jet. This chapter was just the fight scene. Now we will see how this chapter plays out with Mara's meddling.
Chapter 7: Interesting Interrogations
Mara's POV:
Nat successfully parks the jet in the waiting hanger on the Helicarrier. The Captain, Mr. Stark, and Thor exit the back and meet Nat on the deck. She leads them inside to get freshened up. Leaving me with the S.H.I.E.L.D. men and Loki. The men pull him off the jet quickly and begin to march him inside. I follow at a slower pace. Hopefully, I can catch my dad on the way to my room. We pass the Lab where I can see Dr. Banner working. Loki turns and smiles at him which makes him freeze. Loki nods and is pushed by the men to keep walking. Dr. Banner rubs at his head in clear frustration. I give him a wave in what he hopefully perceives as encouragement. He nods at me. I keep walking down the long hall. The men take Loki to the left towards the holding cell and I move to take the right. Loki stops and turns his head towards me.
"Mara," he calls out. I make eye contact and ignore the eyes that are burning into me from the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
"What?" I ask.
"Parting is such sweet sorrow, That I shall say good night till it be morrow," he recites one of Shakespeare's most popular plays.
"You do realize that you are quoting a play that ends in the tragic demise of both lovers correct?" I ask rhetorically and turn my back on him with a dramatic flip of my hair.
"Exactly my dear. I will get what I want. If by chance I do not succeed, I will take everything down with me. And that includes you. You are mine," he whispered darkly.
"Come on, let's go psycho," an agent demanded.
"As you wish. I will gladly stay." Red flags. "Goodnight, my sweet," he called. Then I heard their footsteps as they marched him down the hall.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and raked a hand through my hair. Keep moving forward Mara, I told myself and walked swiftly to my room. I lock my door and slid down it. I rake my hands through my hair and look down at my outfit. The ridiculous outfit that I am still wearing. Why did he choose me anyway? Ugh. I decide to burn the clothes off my body and walk into my bathroom to take a quick shower. I warm up the air around my body allowing me to dry within seconds. Love that new trick. I throw on one of my S.H.I.E.L.D. uniforms and braid my hair.
"Mara?" I hear someone call through my door, as they knock. I tug on my boots and go pull open the door.
No One's POV:
-Holding Cell-
Loki is now free from his cuffs and is contained in a large glass cell held by hydraulic rigs. fury walks up the control panel of the cell.
"In case it's unclear. You try to escape. You so much as scratch that glass," Fury begins and presses a button which opens up a hatch underneath Loki's cell. Loki peers as much as he can from the glass. "Thirty thousand feet, straight down in a steel trap. You get how that works?!" Fury closes the hatch and points at Loki. "Ant," then he points at the button that allows him to drop Loki into the steel trap. "Boot."
"It's an impressive cage. Not built, I think, for me," Loki states and smirks.
"Built for something a lot stronger than you," Fury admits.
"Oh, I've heard.," Loki says and looks into the camera.
-Briefing Room-
The team watch Loki getting interrogated on the monitor. Banner looks at the monitor, intently and knowingly.
-Holding Cell-
"The mindless beast, makes play he's still a man. Or was it for the little lost girl that you are so pathetically in fear of? How desperate are you, that you call upon such lost creatures to defend you?" Loki taunts.
"How desperate am I? You threaten my world with war. You steal a force you can't hope to control," Fury yells.
Mara's POV:
"Dad!" I yell and jump into his arms. This results in a grunt and a squeak. I pull back quickly to see my Puck around dad's neck. "Thank you dad. I was so worried about him," I said and quickly took him and ran him to his cage. I gave him some snacks and turned back to dad. "I missed you too."
"Baby girl," he began and pulled me in for another hug. "I was so desperately worried about you. Loki didn't do anything to you, did he?"
"No dad, he never hurt me."
"He didn't do anything else did he?" Dad asked uncomfortably.
"No. He just kept me locked up until the German gallery fiasco. He drove me crazy though. He talks in riddles. I wasn't able to discern anything about his plans for us and Earth. I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. I am just thankful you are alive. I am also proud of you. You were able to get us a location. Now we do have to get moving. We need to try to be a step ahead of him. Let's get to the briefing room.
"Lead the way, daddy-o."
-Holding Cell-
"You talk about peace and you kill 'cause it's fun. You take people like they are your personal playthings. You have made me very desperate. You might not be glad that you did," Fury warned.
"Ooh. It burns you to come so close. To have the Tesseract, to have power, unlimited power. And for what? A warm light for all mankind to share, and then to be reminded what real power is," Loki scoffed at Fury.
"Well, you let me know if Real Power wants a magazine or something," Fury taunted and walked off leaving Loki in his glass cell. Loki looks back at the camera, smirking.
-Briefing Room-
Steve watches until the monitor goes black. Thor, who didn't even look, just listened, stands there, torn apart. They all just stand there in stunned silence.
"He really grows on you, doesn't he?" Banner asked.
"Not really," Mara spoke up as she and Phil entered the room.
"Loki's gonna drag this out. So, Thor, what's his play?" Steve asked bluntly.
"He has an army called the Chitauri. They're not of Asgard or any world known. He means to lead them against your people. They will win him the Earth. In return, I suspect, for the Tesseract," Thor explained.
"An army? From outer space?" Steve asked incredulous.
"Duh," Mara murmered.
"Mara," Phil scolded.
"So he's building another portal. That's what he needs Erik Selvig for," Banner voiced his epiphany.
"Selvig?" Thor questioned.
"He's an astrophysicist," Banner explained.
"He's a friend," Thor shot back.
"Loki has him under some kind of spell, along with one of ours," Natasha informed Thor.
"He has tons of people under his scepter spell at all of his bases," Mara added.
"I wanna know why Loki let us take him. He's not leading an army from here," Steve wondered.
"I don't think we should be focusing on Loki. That guy's brain is a bag full of cats, you could smell crazy on him," Banner said.
"Agreed. But even a bag full of cats is dangerous. You can't predict what will happen when you open the bag," Mara warned.
"Have care how you speak. Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard, and he's my brother," Thor demanded in defense.
"He killed eighty people in two days," Natasha deadpanned.
"He's adopted," Thor reasoned.
"Hey! I resent that. I am adopted as well," Mara cut in.
"And do you want to bring in your accident count right now?" Natasha questioned her.
"Iridium, what did they need the Iridium for?" Banner asked the room.
"It's a stabilizing agent," Tony says to Banner while walking up to Phil and clapping him on the back. "Just know my offer still stands. I'll fly you there. Keep the love alive," then Tony moves to stand next to Banner. Mara looks questioningly at Phil. He mouthed later to her and focused back on Tony. "Means the portal won't collapse on itself, like it did at SHIELD." Then Tony walked over to Thor. "No hard feelings, Point Break. You've got a mean swing."
"Get on with it," Mara murmured.
"Also, it means the portal can open as wide, and stay open as long, as Loki wants," Tony finished his Iridium information. Then he began looking around at the crew.
"Finally," Mara whispered.
"Uh, raise the mid-mast, ship the top sails. That man is playing GALAGA! Thought we wouldn't notice. But we did," Tony then covered one eye and looked around. "How does Fury do this?"
"He turns," Agent Hill said tersely and looked away from the adult child. Tony looks around the monitors and places a button size hacking implant under Fury's desk, without anyone noticing.
"Well, that sounds exhausting. The rest of the raw materials, Agent Barton can get his hands on pretty easily. Only major component he still needs is a power source. A high energy density, something to kick start the cube," Tony said.
"When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics?" Agent Hill questioned.
"Last night. The packet, Selvig's notes, the Extraction Theory papers. Am I the only one who did the reading?" Tony asked the room.
"Does Loki need any particular kind of power source?" Steve asked.
"But not human-ish right?" Mara asked concerned.
"He's got to heat the cube to a hundred and twenty million Kelvin just to break through the Coulomb barrier." Banner added.
"Unless, Selvig has figured out how to stabilize the quantum tunneling effect." Tony said.
"Well, if he could do that he could achieve Heavy Ion Fusion at any reactor on the planet." Banner pointed out.
"Finally, someone who speaks English," Tony cheered.
"Is that what just happened?" Steve asks.
"Nope," Mara tells him as Tony and Banner shake hands. A glimmer in their eyes shines as the mutual respect for each other shows. "Oh great. Now we have a bromance."
"I know that's not English," Steve says.
