Chapter 57: What to do?
''I don't think we can thank you enough for helping us.'' I said softly to Omega Girl.
She merely shrugged her shoulders as she led the way. ''Think nothing of it.''
As of right now, I have no idea where she is leading us. I've never been down this part of London before, in fact, I think we may have walked out of the city. Trust me, it's just something you instinctively know when you live here all your life. Despite the obvious long walk though, it didn't feel that long enough since Douglas and his goons over took our secret base. Maybe I was so numb, both physically and mentally, that my mind has just shut everything out.
I saw a man die right before my eyes, in my arms. Someone who trusted us to take the fight to Victor, a man who betrayed Donovan's trust many years ago. I feel like a complete failure, I wouldn't even be here right now if the others didn't come back for me. My body was so battered; I still needed to lean on Alex and Steph from time to time.
Looking behind me, I could see Harry, Patricia and Bobby holding onto D while Stella held a piece of ripped cloth from her costume over the wound trying to stop her from bleeding out. Thankfully, she was still conscious and Stella's looks of worry weren't as frequent, so maybe the wound is healing up without any further problems.
I wish things could heal that easy. Right now, Douglas and Victor are probably doing all they can to hunt us down like dogs. If they catch up with us, we don't have any strength to fight back and defend ourselves, especially when they have the firepower of Attila and Hun. Knowing that they'll catch up with us eventually, I look back towards Omega Girl. ''How much further?''
''Just around this corner and…'' She didn't even look back before sprinting forwards until she stopped at a corner shop. She pointed down the road that leads to the left. ''It's the building down there.''
We quickened our pace so that we could get a look at our new hideout. To say that when we turned the corner and saw the building that Omega Girl was pointing to wasn't what we expected would be an understatement. It was an old, derelict apartment block that looked to have been neglected for years. I think even Hellrider's building where I fought him was in better condition, and that building looked like it would come apart during our fight.
I think Omega Girl noticed that we weren't overly convinced by her 'home', because she sighed heavily and turned to look at each of us. ''I didn't knock on your cool little hideout.''
''Yeah, well…'' Alex spoke. ''Our hideout was cool.''
''Just wait until you get inside.'' She winked at him before spinning around and running towards the building. Just when she was about to reach the front of the building, she shifted her body to the right and leapt up with one leg onto the side of an outer wall, and then bounced onto the ledge of a window and dived inside.
Once again, Alex was the first one to speak. ''You know, I keep flip-flopping between thinking she's awesome and she's nuts.''
Steph shrugged his shoulders. ''Maybe she's both.''
''Let's just get inside,'' I said quietly. ''Before we attract someone's attention.'' And that wouldn't be a hard thing to do, considering we're a group of people in bright but bloody superhero costumes standing in the middle of the street. Although from the looks of things, the whole street seemed empty. Even the street lamps looked ready to die as they constantly flickered on and off.
Without another word, we all headed towards the building to finally get some rest and some peace to consider our options of what to do next. At least we didn't have to do any acrobatic stunts like our host to get in, as we noticed an opening a few metres to the side large enough for all of us to get in.
I gently slipped off of Alex and Steph's support, trying to get the feeling back in my legs and stand on my own. It took a moment for the dizziness to go, during this time; the others had helped D inside and out of sight from the outside world. Hopefully this place will keep us hidden at least for tonight. My mind kept drifting back to Donovan and what he said to me, about me constantly getting stronger and having something that no other superhero has.
Maybe it was just soothing words to help calm me down before the fight, but something just seemed to click in my mind. Like I knew that he was right, and that I can keep getting stronger and stop anyone that threatens the safety of my friends or the people I care about. I wanted to be the greatest superhero who ever lived, and I still do. I've faced enemy after enemy, almost died a number of times, and I do seem to be getting better…so why does that scare me so much?
''Hey!'' I looked up to see Patricia poking her head out from the opening. A look of concern covered her face. ''Are you okay?''
I nodded, trying to look assured. ''Yeah, just catching my breath.''
She didn't look too convinced, but she returned with a warm smile anyway. ''You should check this place out on the inside, it's actually not that bad.''
''Really?'' On first impressions, I would be surprised if there even was an inside to this place. My legs felt like jelly, as they wobbled a little ever time I took a step, but nothing to be too worried about. Patricia lifted a helping arm to help me inside through the opening, and…I have to admit, I was taken back a bit by what I was seeing.
It looked like every runaway's dream. Although most of the walls were missing, everything else looked to be intact. The floor was strong, there was a working fridge and a supportable table in what I guess was the kitchen. On the other side, a large mattress covered with thick, black bed-sheets lay on the floor with a nice-looking sofa behind it. Tattered, but nice-looking 'Hello Kitty' curtains were spread over the numerous cracked windows.
There was a flight of stairs that only reached halfway up to the second floor, but not by much. Unfortunately, I couldn't see what was up there, nor did I want to as looking up for too long brought the dizziness back. The place did look strong and steady on the inside, and it was large enough for all of us to have a little bit of space.
I noticed Bobby gently lower D down onto the mattress on the floor, as Stella continued to look over her. While they looked after her, I sat down on a rickety chair.
Now that I had a chance to think to myself, other thought started to fill my mind. I've practically been gone all day and night, what must Jenna be thinking right now? Her calling the police is something I won't be looking forward to. I wouldn't blame her if she did though, she must be worried-sick, and yet I keep doing it to her time after time. Always scaring her, either by coming home with some new injury or going out for hours without explanation. At times, I think I hurt her more than I do my own enemies.
At least Rachael knows what I do, though that doesn't make things any easier for her. She has said that she's fine with what I do and knows why I do it, but I can't help but feel like…like…
Before my train of thoughts could go on, Omega Girl landed right in front of me from the floor above, nearly making me leap out of my own skin. ''Jesus, don't do that!'' I gasped.
''My bad.'' She said. I'm surprised she didn't come out with another quip. As I calmed down again and watched as the others also took their time to relax and try to reorganise, our host looked at me sympathetically. ''I'm sorry about your friend.'' There was real empathy in the way she said that, she really meant it.
My mouth opened, the words didn't come out though. I just didn't know what to say at this point. Except appreciation for her helping us out. ''Thank you! Not only for letting us stay, also for helping us out before and coming back for me. You didn't have too…''
''Are you kidding dumbass? You were my inspiration, obviously,'' She gestured at her costume before taking a seat next to me. ''Like I would leave you behind.''
''But…other than the symbol, you don't really know me!''
''And that matters because?'' She asked me rhetorically.
''Touché.'' I said coolly.
As if she read my mind, she continued the conversation with something I was about to bring up. ''And before you start thinking about leaving me out to dry halfway in, you can forget it. I'm going to help you deal with it…oh wait!'' She said excitedly before reaching behind her, her hand scavenging through a pile of rubble before pulling out a pair of broken sunglasses and putting them on. ''As I was saying, I'm going to help you deal with it!'' She said in a mock tough-guy voice.
Despite the bleakness of the situation and how bad this day has gone, I couldn't help but smile at her antics. ''You know…when I was looking for help; you weren't exactly what I was expecting. But I'm glad you came along, you really helped us out.'' She didn't reply, however, that grin on her face let me know that she did know how much I really appreciated her helping us out. Knowing that she was still going to help us out, my attention as now turned to her home. ''So…do you just hangout here from time to time?''
''If you mean do I hangout, eat, drink, sleep, and live here seven days a week? Yep!''
My eyes shot up hearing that. ''Wait? You actually live here? As in, this is your only home?''
''No,'' She responded in an obvious manner. ''From time to time I sneak into this football stadium and spend the night there! You'd never think a stadium would be a cosy place to live, but it's actually…''
''No, no!'' I interrupted her. ''I mean like an actual home? A family you live with?''
''Oh, not really, no.'' She answered as if it was no big deal. I couldn't hide my surprise, and she must have noticed because she carried on talking. ''It's fine. I don't miss them anyway.''
Perhaps it was best to leave it at that since it's the first topic that she doesn't seem to want to have a conversation about. Wanting to change the subject, I was back to looking around her home. ''I do like this place though.''
''Thanks! I give each place of mine a name!''
I looked back at her curiously. ''So what's this place called?''
''Bras and Boxers!'' Once again I was caught off guard and looking at her with surprise plastered on my face. ''You want to know why it's called that?''
''I've got a feeling I don't want too.''
''Trust me, it's not as perverted as it sounds…'' She paused mid-sentence. ''Okay, it is as perverted as it sounds, but it's a funny story.''
Someone whistling diverted my attention away from her, and we turned to see Harry looking out from one of the windows, down at the street. His face focused as he aimed one of his last remaining arrows outside. ''You might want to come see this!'' He breathed hastily, his eyes always looking outside at whatever was going on.
Slowly making my way over towards me, I prepared myself for the worst. What if it was Douglas and Victor? There's no way we would be able to defend ourselves, especially with Diandra still healing. I finally looked out the window, and what I saw made my blood freeze, while at the same time left me puzzled about what to do next. ''Is that Marcus?''
I didn't even need to ask that questions, there weren't many other people we knew who were the size of mountains. We watched as he stumbled down the street, holding one arm close to his chest and limped towards our building. He must have known we were here, but he didn't look in any shape to take us on, you could almost see the trail of blood he was leaving behind as he moved closer to us.
''He's going to bring them here if we don't do something.'' Harry said as he turned to look at me. ''Do you think I should?'' He gestured towards his bow. A part of me wanted him to, that dark place inside just wanted Marcus to be gone for good. But I couldn't do that, even if he didn't look like he was worth losing one of Harry's last few arrows.
I shook my head. ''I'll go. If anything goes wrong, or you see anyone else, take the shot!''
''Will do.'' He replied and looked back towards Marcus. The giant man looking like he was about to faint on the spot.
Taking a deep breath, I walked away from the two of them as they remained on watch. So far today, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, so I really shouldn't be going out to see Marcus. Even if he does look bloody and weak at the moment, that hasn't stopped him from nearly killing me half a dozen times before. As I walked past the others, who had come over to check to see what was going on, I could see the worry on their faces. We were scared right now, terrified. Another mistake could cost someone else their life, so I had to tread carefully. As I approached the front of the building, leading to the street that Marcus was still limping down, I waited to see if anything would happen from the outside.
''I know you're in there!'' He shouted weakly, his voice was hoarse and broken. He must have just barely escaped Attila and Hun's attack with his own life. ''I'm unarmed so don't shoot me! I just want to talk!''
Alex sneered at his comment. ''He just wants to talk?''
''It looks like talking is all he can do,'' Patricia commented. ''He looks like he's about to collapse.''
Maybe if Marcus wasn't currently bleeding out, I would have stayed inside and played it safe. But even after the beating I took, I was still in better shape than he was. So if he tried anything, I was confident in my abilities to handle whatever he could throw. Taking a few steps forward, I was about to climb out of the ground floor window when I felt Stella's hand placed on my shoulder. ''I'll go with you. Just in case something goes wrong.''
''No, you look after…''
''Diandra's fine. The stitches are in place, and the bleeding has stopped for the moment. I've done all I can.''
I was still hesitant about letting her come, especially after what she just went through with Marcus at the Toxin base. However, looking at her, I could see the fire and determination in her eyes, like nothing would or could stop her. Even if she was still scared, she was willing to go on. I couldn't argue against her, so I nodded to her before turning my attentions back to Marcus. ''Alright! You stay right there, we're coming out!''
As instructed, Marcus remained in place. Though, I don't think it was because of my words, but because it looked like he didn't have any strength to take another step forward.
Stella and I hopped over the ledge of the window, and waited a few seconds before approaching him cautiously. ''So what do you want?'' Stella scowled.
His breathing was rough, and blood continued to pour from his bad arm, as well as from his leg. His face was swollen to the point where one of his eyes was nearly covered by the lump of purple skin. This was the first time I could genuinely say he wasn't a threat to anyone at the moment. ''I want to make a deal.'' He said throatily.
''I don't think you're in any position to make a deal with us.'' I said.
''Just listen to me,'' He croaked impatiently. ''You're not the only one who is after Douglas. I want him gone. And I no longer have the power to go after him…'' He paused, needing a moment to catch his breath. I was afraid for a second that he was about to swallow his own tongue, that's how weak he was right now.
Even though he never got to finish his sentence, I had a feeling about what kind of deal he was offering. ''You want us to work together?'' I asked.
Before he could respond, Stella took a few steps closer towards him, her face full of fury. ''Why? After everything you've done, gives us one good reason why we should work with you?''
''Because Toxin is dead!'' He said painfully. ''Everything that I worked for, that I believed in…that Douglas made me believe in, it was all a lie. Now I have nothing left to fight for, except my pride.''
''Your pride?'' She hissed wrathfully. ''You've killed and hurt so many people! Are you proud of that? Are you?''
He stared at her, his eyes never looking away. Right now, I didn't seem to exist, this was now between the two of them. ''It's how my life has turned out,'' Marcus finally said. '' You may not agree or understand my decisions, but I just want to live it, as each day passes and I do the things I do. I have never regretted a single action in my time with Toxin, no matter how bad they sound to you.''
''So you regret the things you did, but you're still proud of yourself and Toxin?''
''Because in the past, people have used and betrayed me, but I've never lost sight of the man I am. And Toxin allowed me to be that man. I'm a man that holds onto my debts, and keeps my word…unlike Douglas.''
Stella took one more step closer towards him. ''That still doesn't excuse everything you've done!''
He stared back at her vacantly. ''As I said, you may not agree or understand my decisions. Which brings me back to my deal. Do you still want to listen?''
I was now apart of the conversation again, as Marcus turned to look at me. I walked closer to Stella, her fists were clenched tightly and her body was tense. Another second, and I think she would have probably attacked Marcus on the spot. I could understand why she would be like this. After everything she's been through with Toxin, it must hurt her to hear Marcus admit he was proud about his work with Toxin. It made me mad as well. This guy has a twisted view of honour. ''What's your deal?'' I asked him.
''First I have a question, did he have a reason for attacking the base we were at tonight?''
''Yeah, someone sold us out.''
He nodded and seemed to stare off into space, as if he was forming a plan right this second. ''Good, that means I wasn't wrong. There's a pattern with the bases he's been attacking, so I know where he's going next. We'll ambush them when they arrive. The last thing they'll except is for us to go on the offensive after they've driven us both back.''
Stella and I exchanged looks, I think both of us had the same through we were afraid to admit…that this was our only good idea left. ''How do we know we can trust you?'' I questioned him.
He looked at me sincerely. ''You're just some kid that gets on my nerves. Douglas, on the other hand, disgusts me. He's the kind of man that I can't stand. Even if it means working with you…I want him out of the picture.''
''Listen here,'' Stella said bitterly at him. ''I have no reason to trust you, but right now we're running out of options, so we'll think it through. But if we agree, and you turn your back on us and hurt anyone I care about, I will hunt down every single Toxin member there is and kill you all myself!''
It was scary seeing Stella like this, but again, I could see where she was coming from. I gently grabbed her arm, trying to edge her away slowly, fearing that she could snap at the giant any minute. She looked at me, and her expression softened, it was like someone else inside her took over whenever she lost her temper. Even with everything we've been through, I've never seen her truly angry at something or someone…and after hearing her threat, I'm not sure I ever want to see that side of her again.
I returned my gaze towards Marcus. ''We'll think it over.''
''Our base is at the corner of Ashton Street, next to the old park. I'll be waiting. We'll have a better chance against them if we work together, remember that!'' He turned back around and started limping away. Ashton Street was quite some distant away, I'd be surprised if he made it that far. Then again, this is Marcus we're talking about, and I think he wanted Douglas just as much as we did.
Not wanting to stay out in the open for much longer, Stella and I made our way back towards the building, but not before I turned to her. ''You okay?''
She sighed heavily and nodded. ''It's just…how can he be proud of what Toxin have done? I've seen what they're like, and all the things they've done. There's nothing to be proud of!''
There was nothing I could think of saying to make her understand, mostly because I was in the same boat as her, and that was I didn't understand either. There are just some people that do things so drastically different it's almost as if we've entered another world. The only thing I can say about Marcus is that at least he seems to know that he's not in the right or good…Douglas is a different story.
We returned to the window and leapt back inside, where we were instantly greeted by the others, even Diandra, who was being helped to her feet by Bobby. ''So what happened?'' Steph asked.
''Marcus knows where Douglas and Victor are planning to strike next, he wants us and the Toxins to work together to fight them once and for all.'' I explained.
There was no verbal response from anyone, but the looks on their faces said it all. No one was sure of what to do next. Even Alex, who at this point would usually argue with me or try to find some other alternative, was silent. Normally, the planning of attack would go smoothly because we trust one another, now we were going to have to trust Marcus and what Toxins he had left.
''We have to do it!'' Diandra spoke up confidently. ''We're not going to get another chance like this, I say we take it!''
''But what if they don't show up?'' Hood inquired. ''What if it's just Attila and Hun who attack?''
''Then we'll get them to talk! Find out where their bosses are, and go after them!''
''So deal with it as we go?'' Omega Girl contemplated, with Diandra nodding assertively. ''Cool, I've always worked better like that anyway.''
''Then you'll fit right in!'' Alex said, patting the new girl on the back. ''We never have a clue what we're about to do before charging head first into it!''
It was nice to finally see some smiles after what we've been through. I addressed the group, ''Is everyone sure they want to go through with this? Because if you're not feeling up for it or still need time to heal, now's the time to say something.''
''You should know the answer by now.'' Stella told me.
Yeah, it was getting a bit redundant to ask that question to the others. Even Dee looked up for it, although I think even she knew that she would have to take a backseat from most of the fighting. But if Marcus is really up for us working together, then that's an added bonus.
Still, my mind would keep going back to Donavan, dying just a few hours ago before my eyes. That could be anyone of us later. Just the thought made me sick and my skin go pale, which the others must have noticed, because they looked at me with great concern. I smiled back at all of them. ''You know what? Before we head out, how about you all head home for an hour or two!''
I couldn't tell who looked the more perplexed out of the lot. ''What do you mean?'' Alex asked me.
I shrugged my shoulders lazily. ''Just an hour or two doing whatever you want or rest up. We'll need every bit of energy we can afterwards. We all have to head to Ashton Street, remember that!''
''But why not just go now?''
''Alex,'' Harry uttered, stopping my friend from asking any more questions. Judging from the stern look on his face, I'm guessing Harry knew what I was getting at. ''I think maybe we could do with some home time.'' He said, lowering his bow and arrow for the first time since we got here.
''I need to get back with my parents,'' Stella said. ''They're probably worried sick, and I haven't called Megan in a few hours either.''
''I'm usually back late anyway,'' Patricia mumbled. ''But I should let my mum and dad know I'm okay.''
Bobby nodded. ''S-same with me.''
Things weren't so easy for Diandra on the other hand, as she looked away shamefully. ''I'm not sure if I can go back. No way am I going to be able to explain this.'' She pointed at her bullet wound.
''Hey,'' Omega Girl called to get her attention. ''You're welcome to stay here if you want. Just call your folks and tell them you're having a stay-over at a friend's. Just don't give them my address, I don't think they'll like my style of housing.''
Diandra looked uncertain, although I wasn't sure if that was because the excuse wouldn't work on her parents, or because she's not had the best of starts with Omega Girl since the start of the night. Finally though, she smiled lightly at her. ''Thank you.''
''Cool! Just don't start treating me like a butler…unless a salary is offered.'' She teased.
Meanwhile, Stephen turned to look at Alex. ''I guess we better head home bro.''
''Yeah.'' He said timidly.
''Wait, before we go…'' Patricia started rummaging through her back pocket before pulling out a small phone. ''Is it okay if I could have a picture of us? I don't have one of us all together yet.''
Alex started chuckling. ''Don't hold it in front of Steph, he might break it.''
In response, Steph playfully slapped his older brother on the back of the head. Quickly, we all huddled closely together while Patricia turned around held the phone out in front of her, making sure to get all of us in frame. It was a rushed job, but soon enough, Patricia clicked the button and the picture was taken.
After that, a silence seemed to fall on us all. Then again, I don't think anything else needed to be said. As I stood and watched, everyone else started to leave the building. Giving each other encouraging looks before parting ways. The next time we would be seeing each other, we would be heading into another battle, one that could determine the fate of the entire city. So, no pressure!
Soon enough, I was the last one left while Omega Girl helped Dee to get comfortable. I thought about calling Rachael, I should really, to let her know what's going on. But the person I kept thinking about right now was Jenna. She was going to have a field day with me when I get back home, there's no way I could lie my way out of this…and maybe I shouldn't.
An idea formed in my mind, I hated it, but it was all I had. I walked over to Omega Girl. ''Do you have any spare change on you?''
''Uh, I should have some coins lying about the place. Why?''
Just as I expected, as soon as I knocked on the front door, it flung open with Jenna standing there looking like she was about to go into a panic. And it didn't help matters with how battered I looked right now. She pulled me inside, holding me firmly and protectively. ''Oh my God, Thomas, what happened to you? Where have you been?''
''I'm fine…''
''That's not good enough of an explanation! I want you to tell me what happened? Is someone doing this to you?''
''Jenna, can we talk in the front room? I want to tell you something.''
It hurt to see how so close to tears, she deserved to know what was going on, I couldn't hide the truth anymore, even if it just made my situation worse. She continued to stare at me restlessly, wanting me to explain what happened right away, but I couldn't just yet. ''Can you wait in the front room for me? I want to get a drink of water.''
''I'll get one for you…''
''No, it's fine.'' She couldn't argue as I was already on my way into the kitchen. I bet if I didn't look so hurt, she would have dragged me back and demanded an answer out of me. Instead, I could see her stand still besides the front door, her arms folded and her eyes distant. Eventually, she went over to the front room to take a seat on the sofa.
In the kitchen, I got myself two cups and filled them with water. I double-checked to make sure she was still in the front room, and unable to see what I would do next. Once I was sure, I discreetly pulled out two sleep-aid tablets from the packet that I bought, and dropped them into Jenna's cup. The water fizzed around the tablets for a few seconds before they dissolved into nothing and the bubbles disappeared. I took both glasses and walked into the front room to confront Jenna…hopefully she doesn't ask to swap cups.
I sat down on the sofa, close to her as I handed her glass over. She held it in her hands while I took a slow sip of mine. I wanted her to drink hers first before I tell her what's going on, otherwise this won't work. I don't want to do this to her, but if I don't, there's no way she's going to let me back out of the house again. At last, she takes a large gulp of water, that's all I needed. I placed my cup down on the floor, as Jenna looked at me tensely. ''I'm Omega Kid!''
Announcing it like that was probably not the best way to start.
Jenna stared at me wide-eyed, to be honest though, I thought she would look more shocked than how she did now. I guess her suspicions never left. She calmly placed her cup down onto the floor as well, before placing her head in her hands. Now I was beyond terrified. It would take a few minutes before the drugs would kick in, until then I wasn't sure of what was going to happen. Was she going to cry? Was she going to yell at me? I even feared that she would hit me?
''You lied to me!'' She murmured. At this stage, I felt like I was the one about to cry, I couldn't even talk back to her. So instead I just nodded in response. She still hadn't looked at me since my confession. ''I asked you before, and you said right to my face that you weren't Omega Kid! After all this time, all the danger you've put yourself through, and you just lied about all of it! I just…I don't know what to do!'' She rubbed her eyes roughly, both of them closed for a long period of time. It was late, and she had been waiting anyway. She will be asleep any minute now.
''I wanted to tell you.'' I mumbled softly.
She didn't respond right away. ''Does anyone else know?'' She still wouldn't look at me, and I didn't know how to answer her question without giving away some hint about the others. However, she didn't wait for a response from me before she worked it out. ''Oh God! Don't tell me that those other superheroes are…it's Alex and Stephen isn't it?''
''Jenna, I…'' I froze up, the words just wouldn't come out, it felt like I was choking on my own guilt.
''Thomas…I can't even begin to explain how…how angry I am with you right now.'' She said forcefully.
It's weird how being in a situation like this feels more like me getting stabbed than actually getting stabbed. I thought I had this all planned out, I thought I could handle explaining things to Jenna! But hearing her, and seeing her like this…it made me things impossible for me. I felt weak.
I could feel her nestling further back into the sofa, and her eyes couldn't stay open for more than a few seconds at a time. ''You've…got to stop this!''
''I can't, there's one more thing I have to do.'' I replied back.
''No,'' She said drowsily, as she started to slump against the arm of the sofa. ''I'm…not…letting…you…'' Her head rested against the sofa, and her lips sealed shut. I waited to see if she was really out. The seconds passed by, and the only movement that came from her was the steady rise and fall of her chest from her breathing.
It was over for now. I can't imagine what she'll be like when she's no longer tired, and me drugging her certainly won't make things easier. I leaned back against the sofa, trying to relax myself. My cheeks were red hot and my palms were sweating. But there was still one more thing I wanted to do before I head out. I quickly reached for my phone in my pocket and quickly dialled Rachael's number, hoping that she would answer at this late hour.
It took a while, and I thought she wasn't going to pick up. Thankfully, I did hear a lovely voice at last. ''Hey, what's going on? You and the others weren't in school today! Is everything alright?''
''Yeah, we're all…'' I wanted to say we were all fine, but I kept thinking about Donavan. I dodged the question. ''Is it okay if you can come over?''
She didn't answer immediately. ''It's late! I mean…I could try and sneak out, maybe. Are you sure everything is fine?''
Finally, I couldn't keep it in anymore, as a single tear rolled down my face and my voice cracked as I spoke. ''No.''
''Hold on, I'll be over as fast as I can.'' She said quickly before hanging up, probably about to sneak out.
I now know how they feel! All my favourite superheroes doing one last thing with their friends and family before heading off to what could possibly be their final battle…now I know how difficult it feels, having that feeling you may never see them again. It sent tremors throughout my body just thinking about it. We've fought villains before, even taking on a whole team of them and a gang to boot, but right now everything just feels…cold.
''You're shivering!'' Rachael said to me. Just her words alone were warm to me, I did feel slightly better as her arm wrapped itself around my shoulders and she held me close. It worked for a second, until the realisation of where I was going kicked in again, I was a solider heading into a war. ''You know, this is the first time I've seen your comic collection in full.'' She tried to change the subject by mentioning my stack of comics I pulled out from under the bed.
''Yeah I just…wanted to look at them again. No matter how many I get, I still remember each new one I bought as if it happened yesterday…weird huh?''
As she shook her head, I could hear her laugh and feel her smile against me. I know that sounds impossible, but I can just somehow tell when she's smiling or not. If ever she's not smiling, I rush off to her aid and help cheer her up. If she is smiling, I rush off to her aid and make sure that smile stays there. Jeez I feel like an old fashioned poet right now.
Letting out a sigh, I rested my head against hers, not really sure what to do. Everyone else was still out doing whatever they wanted to do. But there are still so many things left I haven't gotten around to, like reading Jenna's comic…if she can ever forgive me for drugging her. Hearing Megan sing on stage…if she ever actually keeps the courage to sing in front of a live audience. Me personally? So many new friends to meet, new films to watch, learning to drive, waiting for Star Wars Episode Seven…and…even with my fear of flying…I've always wanted to take my friends and Rachael abroad somewhere, just where we can hang out.
Almost as if she has some telepathic link, Rachael's hand cupped my cheek, her thumb brushing it lightly. ''What are you thinking about?''
I take her hand and gently kiss her knuckle. ''A reason to win!''
''Good, keep thinking that, and you can beat anyone and anything.''
Smiling back at her, I'm still a little curious. ''Aren't you going to try and stop me? Everyone else is.''
She stared deeply into my eyes. ''I wish I could stop you! I don't choose for you to charge into something this life threatening. But if you and the others don't do something, then those killers will bring this whole city into ruin and murder thousands of people. You and the other heroes are the only ones that can stop them. You can do it!''
''You really have that much confidence in me?'' I ask bluntly.
A nod of her head, and the whole world felt like it had been lifted off my shoulders. ''Thomas, so many times you've been…'' She froze before continuing, as if dreading the next few words. ''Beaten and backed up against a wall, many of them physically stronger than you are. But you still win! Because you don't give up, you have a will that can't be broken. You are so special. You know, I know this is stupid to say after the whole identity problem thing before, I wish that people knew what a great hero you are.''
Slowly but surely I felt my confidence rising, with every word Rachael said, it was like having my armour fixed and that I could accomplish anything…although I always seem to feel like that whenever I'm around her, but now, when I really need a confidence boost the most, her she is giving it to me. I wish I could come up with some way of saying how special she is to me. The words though are stuck in my mouth; only a whisper escaped my lips as I felt myself lean forward closer to her, as she did me. ''You know I'm a hero, that's good enough for me.''
Our lips brushed together; at first it started like our usual kisses, sweet and loving…and while it did keep the loving part, all of a sudden the heat seemed to rise in the room, our kiss becoming intense and passionate. The first time this happened, we stopped before we went too far, but now all I can think about is showing her how much I love her.
My lips felt swollen, and throbbing like a heartbeat. We moved closer, her smooth fingers stroking from my cheek to my neck, holding me close. I felt lost and found at the same time, as I gently leaned forward towards her so we both fell together on the bed, side by side. Her hands ran down from my neck, towards the bottom of my shirt, tugging upwards, over my head and throwing it to the side. ''Very nice.'' She said sensually as she gazed at me, and her hand moved towards my chest, caressing.
To be honest, I've never actually bothered or cared to check out my physique…and part too shy. Although, when you fight super villains and thugs for the past year, you have to get some muscle or you're dead meat. I wanted to say something sly or flirty bad…instead I just mutter incoherently. She laughs and presses her lips against mine again. My hands moved up her arms and over her back, feeling the clip of her bra underneath her shirt. The nervousness kept threatening to return, but sharing this moment with her now, it scared off anymore doubt I had. Feeling a click, my hand steadily pulled her shirt upwards; it slipped off the top of her head, along with the bra, leaving her naked…and beautiful beyond belief. I wanted to say something to her, tell her how amazing she looked…once again, all that came out where mutters a bat couldn't understand.
She smiled at me, that radiant smile. Our lips joined together once more as our bodies moved together. It felt like forever, I wish this could last forever, just…bliss and love. Amazing that although there can be a lot of darkness and evil in the world, some kind of light shines down and brings some miracle to the world, for me…Rachael is that miracle, that light.
I felt complete. Rachael made me feel complete. My friends need me, not just for this battle, but for the rest of our lives…we need each other. Even if I can't complete my promise of being the greatest superhero in the world…I can complete my promise of being with my friends and Rachael.
To Be Concluded…
