Chapter 19...
As the duo made their way through another long corridor, Sayo was explaining things as they toured toward where ever she was escorting him. Tatsumi following, while maintaining a bitter distance from her. "Whether you act out on your revenge, Tatsumi, It's gonna be a little while before you can catch that blob of meat off gaurd." She forewarned "So I think for now, you should cooperate until the chance presents itself."
"Thanks for the tip, captain obvious." He mockingly uttered.
"Trust me. The less the king thinks about you, the more reign you'll have. Once you are assigned a position." She pointed out.
"You kept saying 'position' for ten minutes now, what are you talking about?" Tatsumi was confused.
"You are gonna work with me." Sayo reminded. "So naturally, I will have to have you assigned as an official asset for the empire. Or servant? Yeah, lets go with that." She nodded to herself.
"Bite me." Tatsumi had a red tick mark above his head. The disapproval could be seen all over his face.
"I know, I know, you're not an ass kisser. But if I have you assigned as a soldier, then Honest could loophole you in so many ways, I couldn't even intervene." She stopped and turned to him with a blank look. "It would inconvenience us both. So if I have you assigned to me as a subordinate, then only Budo or me can issue punishment. Honest wouldn't be able to do shit. You see this seal?" She held up a black, steel badge with a sparrow on it.
"And that is?" Tatsumi raised his eyebrow.
"Authority of the Peacekeeper. Only those deemed trustworthy of the empire can possess these. And the only one who can issue these, are the King, Budo, and the majority vote of the council." She thoroughly told him. He glanced at it with little interest. "I was able to obtain this, because of my family's connections to the empire. Had long lasting relations with Budo's family, so that really helped." She held up a finger as the thought bubble showed itself.
"I haven't heard of it." Tatsumi crossed his arms and locked eyes with her.
"Rarely, you would. But they existed for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on things. There's one agent in every major city. They pose as spy masters, and people think their purpose is to weed out rebel sources in their territory. But their was a hidden order for the Peacekeepers as well." Sayo said as they continued. "Find the corruption that existed within the empire, and eliminate them. That was the previous Emperor's order. He knew that there were people in the system that abused authority, and even if they were to be imprisoned, they could use their connections to get out."
"So what does the badge do then?" Tatsumi asked curiously.
"Basically, I can get away with anything. I can literally bypass Esdeath's authority. Investigate any scumbag in this kingdom without worrying about political, religious, or militaristic ramifications. I can enter any building, in any town, in any village, I want." She sounded proud as she smiled and put the badge in her pocket. "Also kill enemies to the empire." Her eyes turned slightly hollow, as she smiled sweetly.
"And Honest?" Tatsumi decided to bite.
"I'd need a damn good reason. But until I can get some rock hard evidence of him doing the things he did, he's untouchable." She raised her hands in defeat.
"Even if he's potentially dangerous?" Tatsumi pointed out.
"He's always by the king's side. He keeps a good lid on things. Leaves no loose ends. Evidence is crucial in investigating a political power as high as Honest's." They came to the end of the hall, and the corridor diverged into two directions. They took the left and at the end of the hall there was a heavy, steel door at the end, with a beam locked in place in front of it.
"Alright, Sayo, we've been walking for a while now. Where are you taking me?" Tatsumi demanded. Surely it wasn't just supposed to be a pleasant walk through the finely, decorated halls of the king's castle. There could be any number of things hidden behind that door. A torture chamber. A secret passage. Hell, it could even be another cell for all he knew.
"My office." She answered.
"You have an office?" Tatsumi narrowed his eyes.
"Just a planning room." Sayo shrugged. "Do I look like the kind of girl who'd waste time behind a desk?" She whipped her head around at him in a disapproving manner.
"I could care less." Tatsumi sighed.
"Then I won't bore you with the details." Sayo nodded. She then slid the beam open, and then messed with a small dial, similar to a safe, next to the handle. After a few clicks, a mechanism inside the door made a thudding noise, and unlocked it. Sayo pulled it open, and motioned him to enter. He followed, and she closed the door behind them and it clicked shut. Inside the room was no bigger than his cell. Except, aside from a balcony that overlooked the city, a round table was in the middle with numerous pictures of faces, letters, a few arrow heads, and a pen. There was a very large bed in the corner, with a feather pattern all over the sheets.
"Nice place." Tatsumi said as he examined the room. "It's no makeshift hut in the middle of winter, but I can see the perks of working with the empire." Tatsumi had to give credit. These royal assholes had gold to sling around.
"Glad you approve. We'll plan our missions here. Nobody but me knows about these targets. Apart from the highest ranking individuals in the empire." Sayo explained.
"How long am I going to be working for you...exactly?" Tatsumi asked as he examined the pictures on the table.
"As long as you want." She shrugged.
"..?" Now Tatsumi was confused.
"You work for me, you can do whatever the hell you want. Go back to Night Raid, or help kill the scum in this shithole of a country. I'm giving you the choice. Because no matter how you go about it..." She looked him dead in the eye with a serious stare."..you and I, are the only ones that matter." She uttered with absolute conviction. "Right now you're thinking, I'm just trying to use your urge to kill Honest to indirectly control you. But you can't be controlled by anyone. Not Esdeath, Night Raid, or me. That's why I know I can trust you." She explained slowly as Tatsumi made a blank stare of bitterness. "If you wanna take a shot at Honest now, go ahead." She offered her hand to the door. "I guarantee you won't get within hundred feet of the king, before an entire legion of elite guards drop your corpse before him." She forewarned with a slight bit of sarcasm.
"..." Tatsumi just remained silent.
"...well, you aren't that dumb." She shrugged with a sigh. "So here's my proposal." She offered. "Work your way up my ladder, or work your way up Night Raid's ladder. But you see Tatsumi," She leaned in closer to him. "They don't care about your goals. They only are in for the long game. They wanna wipe all the pieces off the board before going straight for the king. They want nobody to interfere when they launch an assault on the capital. That means taking out any potential threats to their army."
"Esdeath is the only one that is a threat to the entire COUNTRY. Kill her, and the entire moral of the army will sink faster then a rock in water. " Tatsumi scoffed and crossed his arms.
"If she can be killed, it certainly would be nice if someone who could do it, actually showed up." Sayo scoffed.
"Akame could." Tatsumi suddenly said.
"Maybe...that would be a hell of a fight." Sayo thought in her head.
"What do you actually know about Akame?" Tatsumi asked curiously.
"She's more or less the strongest individual on the rebels side. But I honestly just think she's just a freak like Esdeath. I read she had some hellish training that would make her about on par with the both of us combined." She let out a sigh of defeat.
"Assassination training..." Tatsumi uttered while trying to think about how much she had gone through, just to make it to where she was today. Leone said something about that to him a while ago.
"Wasn't just her either." Sayo brought up which garnered his attention. "Her sister also managed to complete the empire's training."
"Sister?" Tatsumi raised his brow. He remembered hearing about that from Akame at some point. But she didn't really seem comfortable sharing anything beyond that.
"Yeah. Her name is Kurome. She's in Esdeath's secret police unit. That uh, Jeagers group. You may have heard." Sayo said as she crossed her arms. "Apparently there's some history with those two having a falling out. Akame defected, and her sister thought it was for the wrong side. But that's just the indoctrination talking, but then again I could care less, because both sides have been rather cruel to us." She turned with a frown.
"Us? There is no 'us', Sayo. We are the complete opposite." Tatsumi felt the need to remind.
"Well I wouldn't say that. You may not see me as an ally, but I really am on your side." She smiled softly.
"Are you? I'm having hard time believing that." Tatsumi got defensive and made an annoyed expression. "Nonono, you see, you are a master manipulator. I, am not going to believe a word you say. Because I am NOT that stupid." He insinuated.
"I know. You're upset because you thought I was just playing with your feelings. But I really just wanted you to learn how to survive. As to why I didn't come find you, I mean, there isn't exactly a situation where someone can just say, 'oh by the way, I just died but I am alive now, so can we go back to how it was?'. I don't exactly know how to word that." Sayo tried to patch up. "Besides, would you even believe me even if I told you?"
"Touche..." Tatsumi scoffed in a sarcastic manner. That is the weirdest thing he had heard from her. "You are unbelievable..." He turned away and took a few steps away.
"So, what do you want to do?" She left him with that, and awaited his response.
"What CAN I do, is what I am contemplating." Tatsumi said as he sighed and closed his eyes. He slowly clenched his fist and placed it on the wall. He stared off into space while weighing his options. "This has got to be some kind of trick. Sayo has never been this lax with me before. It's like she wants me to think I'm in total control. Why though? I'm not really getting a vibe of a lie from her, but I really don't have a choice right now." Tatsumi narrowed his green irises. "The only thing I can be sure of, is that if I make my move too early, I could miss my chance and worse, lose my head." Tatsumi knew that he wouldn't get another chance at easily killing Honest, but if he didn't try to escape, it would be even harder to get away, the longer he remained.
"What's wrong, Tatsumi?" She asked.
"...well, I guess killing Honest can come later. For now, lets just see what exactly I'm facing." Tatsumi opened his eyes with a firm resolve. If he could use this unsteady alliance with Sayo, he could get more information on his target before dealing the deathblow. Against his better judgment to even give a damn about other people's methods, he really was left with no choice in this. One way or the other, he was gonna kill Honest. How he did it? He didn't really sweat the details.
"Well?" Sayo asked once again.
"Just you and me?" Tatsumi spoke up and faced her after a few moments to think on it..
"Yep." Sayo nodded.
"...I'm serious Sayo. No bullshit. If I so much as get a hint you're gonna stab me in the back, I will kill you myself." He threatened.
"I'd have it no other way." Sayo smiled, knowing she finally got his acceptance. "Right then. Sayo and Tatsumi, back together again." She put her hands on her hips and stood in front of him.
"You're gonna make me sick." Tatsumi scoffed.
"Well I guess we will see." She smirked even more. "But before that, lets get you situated." She said as she went to go grab a scroll with a emblem, similar to her badge. She then handed it to him and he took it. He pulled off the string, and it unrolled. "This is a contract, binding you to me, and general Budo. Basically you are under the watch of both of us, and we are to be directly responsible for any insubordination. You fuck up, we kill you." She simplified the last part. "But the guards won't bother you anymore. Sign there." She pointed, and he took the pen off the table and signed.
"Should have started with that." Tatsumi pointed out in an irritated tone. Suddenly his eyes narrowed. "This says I'm obligated to answer a call before militaristic authority. What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Tatsumi was curious.
"You'll be called to the battlefield by high ranking officers. Thankfully that's only once in a while. And it'll be under very strenuous circumstances."
"That means I have to kill rebel soldiers." Tatsumi pointed out.
"Maybe." Sayo shrugged.
"A mere slave would get called out for battle?" Tatsumi thought that was stupid.
"Well, this particular slave managed to land a blow, on the face of the deadliest general in the empire." She shrugged as if it were obvious.
"..." Tatsumi hesitated. He'd finally wiped the slate clean with them after joining Night Raid, but now if he ever was on the battlefield on the opposite side...he didn't want to think about it.
"Relax, I wouldn't try to turn you against your new found friends." Sayo said as she slowly rubbed the table with one finger, while sliding towards him. "Or are they really that important to you?" She asked before stopping in front of him and had a friendly smile.
"I don't have friends, Sayo." Tatsumi said with a blank look. "Because that imply I woul-"
"Would rely on them. Yes, I've heard that at least a dozen times." Sayo headed him off. "But it's not really surprising, considering how much you disrespect your betters ." She let out a giggle.
"..." Tatsumi just turned his head away from her, indicating that he didn't care.
"...that's no good, Tatsumi." Sayo grabbed his face and gently refocused their eye lock. "If you don't give me any kind of back talk...well it kinda takes the fun out of it." She smirked. But she was admiring his emerald eyes, feeling like she could get lost in a story or two within them. "...a girl might take that kind of personal." She softly said.
"I've had plenty of practice." Tatsumi deadpanned.
"As kind of out of character as it sounds..sometimes I wanted to be just like a princess. You know? Who the knight in shining armor saves at last second, and carries in his arms all the way back to her castle. You know who I wanted to be my knight?" She asked as she inched closer.
"..." Tatsumi stayed silent.
"Esdeath."
"...?!" Tatsumi's eyes widened.
"...Ppbbthh, Hahahaha! Had you going there did I?" She suddenly burst out in laughter. "You really haven't changed much."
"..." Tatsumi's eyes lowered.
"Heheh...but, in the end, only you are the only one I care about. Even when we were kids, You were much more fun to play with. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if you came with me, instead. Shame you aren't the type to get yourself killed for a dumb reason like that." She laughed, and then calmed down."..what?" She noticed Tatsumi frowning slightly as he eyed the floor.
"Well...I thought maybe there were some similarities. With your uh, fantasy." He said with made Sayo stop smiling. "But I guess in this case..is I didn't make it in time...I carried you up to a hill, all the way to your grave." The atmosphere got a little heavy. "So...I guess I realize now, that getting killed over something dumb like that wouldn't really suit me...would it?" He sighed quickly, and walked away from her and sat on the bed.
"...hey, it's not like you to sulk." Sayo was now concerned. She went over to where he was and sat there next to him. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know." Tatsumi said with a stoic face. "I don't know why I said that." He avoided looking her in the eye. His mind in a state of gloom, and struggle. "I don't know..." He repeated, trying to get his composure back. Maybe he was expecting some form of...appreciation. When he was in Night Raid, everyone seemed a bit more supportive of his responses when they got personal. Maybe they were what made him feel more...
...weak.
But, in a good way.
"Tatsumi?" She asked. "What am I to you?"
"A pain." He rebuked swiftly. That really was not that hard of a question to him at all.
"Am I really?" Sayo asked him, trying to get a good look at his face. "I just want us to be the same way we were before. You know, friends."
"You-!" Tatsumi had a billion things he wanted to say in that instant, but frustration over such a instigation left him with indecision. He reigned his inner demon in before he let it out to go off on an angry rant. "Okay, I see what you're doing, but it's not gonna work." He replied. Knowing that she was playing another attempt to screw with him.
"I just want to know what's wrong. I felt some emotion in that reply you gave me earlier. Did you really mean that?" Sayo made a blank look.
"No." He simply said.
"Do you want to be friends anymore?"
"No."
"Is it...too late to talk about it?" She had a frown as her hand barely touched his on the bed.
"Every time you open your mouth, I can't even tell if what you are saying is real, or not. You keep acting like I'm special, but what do you care? You're a spy, you lie to get information out of targets...am I one of your targets, Sayo?" He asked with disdain. "Because that would make sense. You just wanna use me, and throw me away just like any other meatbag in this godforsaken world." He accused. "So just save me the whole fucking story, and kill me now." He said as his eye looked away. "'Cuz after that bloated sack of shit eats my blade, I'm done with this shitty life."
"..." Sayo's eyes just observed Tatsumi in curiosity. This was a side he had rarely shown her. She just smiled and stood up in front of him. She then gently brought is head in, and gently embraced him. Lying the side of her head on top of him. "That's a real shame, because I want you around. No matter how shitty this life gets." She said while carefully caressing the top of his head. "We may be walking a blurry line now. But in the end, Tatsumi...it'll just be you, and me." She pulled back and looked him in the eyes. "And when that happens, when the dust settles from the aftermath of both sides, and no more of these noble, goody-two-shoes, or vile, twisted human beings are left standing...they'll drop us like garbage." She whispered the last bit. "Because our only value, is to sacrifice ourselves for whatever dumb reason they want, so they won't have to." She kept close eye contact, as she slowly trapped him in place on the bed. "You see, Tatsumi. I'm not gonna let the rebels fool you into giving up your life for what's 'right', and I am not going to let the empire have you give your life for a brat with a crown that barely fits."
"Oh yeah? How do you know?" Tatsumi scoffed.
"Because I know you. I trust you. I like you. And I see more merit in you dying for what you want. Not what others want."
"And what do I want, Sayo?" Tatsumi asked in a sarcastic tone as he stared back with a grim look.
"I don't know. But you see Tatsumi..." Sayo slowly lowered her head down to his ear. "There's something you need to know..."
"..."
"...?"
"..."
"..?!"
As she said something into his ear, his eyes widened slightly. After about a minute, she finished talking, and pulled back and frowned at him, but Tatsumi had wide eyes, and his mouth was left open.
"Surprise." Sayo smiled sadly, as she looked him in the eye.
"You...?" Tatsumi was at a loss for words. "Wai-nononono, that's impossible..you're lying, this is a kind of trick." He scooted back to sit up and face her properly. "There is a limit to how much nonsense you can give me, Sayo." Tatsumi looked for a so much as a twitch in her eyes, but she looked content.
"I wouldn't lie to you about this." Sayo assured.
"You haven't exactly been straight with me ever since the village. Why the hell would you bring this up now?!" He demanded a further explanation
"You're the only one, aside from my dead parents that know about it. I swear my life on it." She placed her hand on her chest. "I can't trust anyone. If they knew...that's why, I want you to get stronger."
"...this is a dream. I'm in a fucking dream, and you're just waiting to pull the rug out from under me, I KNOW IT." He started talking to himself as he brushed her aside and began pacing back and forth in the room.
"What do I have to gain from lying to you at this point? I've told you the truth." Sayo crossed her legs.
"You...You...y...fuuuuck." Tatsumi was still trying to rack his brain around what he just heard. "Y-you're dropping way too much on me right now! I...dergh! I can't even right now, I just can't!" Tatsumi "If what you told me, and I'm just hypothetically believing you here...why would you tell me?! You should know I hate your fucking guts right now!" He demanded.
"I told you Tatsumi." She stood up and walked over to him. "I just want us to be the same before. You may hate me for everything I've done to you, up to this point. But I'm going to be straight with you from here on out. And just so you know..." She suddenly grabbed his collar with a clenched fist, and a hostile expression. Shooting a merciless gaze into his eyes. "If I wanted you dead...you'd be DEAD." Tatsumi was again surprised, by the look she was giving him. "So get your head out of your ass, and into the game. Don't die on me, in a pathetic attempt to kill him. If you really wanna meet the maker, I will kill you myself. Not because I work for the empire, but because I refuse to let you die like a dog, and to make it painless. But until you actually have that stupid idea, I need you to trust me. I am on your side. If you really wanna kill Honest, then you need to be strong enough to live beyond that."
"...you tricked me, Sayo. Why should I trust you?" Tatsumi softened his expression. Sayo, seeing this, let up, and released him.
"Because you need me, and I need you. Regardless of what happens from now on, we can't change what already happened. Your friends, enemies, doesn't matter who's what anymore. In the end, the strong are the only ones left standing." She firmly stated. "So get stronger, Tatsumi." She left him with. "And when the time comes...you'll know what to do." She headed for the bulky door, and began opening it. "C'mon, Tatsumi. Lets go get you situated." She told him.
"...this isn't over." Tatsumi pointed at her.
"I hope it never is." Sayo smiled and motioned him to go on ahead. Tatsumi sighed deeply and followed her out.
Later...
"Man, I hope I made the right decision in leaving home." The young sailor/warrior known as Wave sounded depressed. After the tournament, he'd been running missions with his comrades in the Jeagers unit. He just returned from taking out an outlying resistance that was attacking shipments from the empire. It could barely be called difficult, given every single one of the people in his unit had a Imperial Arms that made short work of the rebel soldiers. As he walked along the halls, he entered the dining area, where Esdeath was planning a feast, that the general herself was going to present the finest of danger beast meat she could find. "Must be the first one here." Wave figured as he looked around. "Huh?" He was surprised to see the contestant from the tournament a few weeks ago there. "Is that..it's that guy that the general had taken a shine to! Is he going to be eating with us?" Wave wondered. Tatsumi was sitting on the chair, backwards. His emotionless stare remained constant as he kept to himself. Resting his head on his arms.
"I wonder what he's been through the past few weeks. Looks like he's bored. I really hope he isn't like those other guys." Wave sweat dropped slightly as he recalled the rather 'unique' individuals in his group. "But then again..." Wave had a serious look. "He did manage to land a hit on the general herself. So he must be pretty strong. Welp, might as well go so hi." Wave decided to greet him. He walked over, and Tatsumi's eyes shifted in his direction. "H-hi there. I guess you're planning on dining with the Jaegers tonight."
"..." Tatsumi was silent.
"M-my name is Wave. I've come from over seas to answer the call for the empire. I came to fight the revolutionary army that terrorizes the peace that the empire has been long trying to protect. I was personally requested by Esdeath herself to come lend my strength." He sounded proud of the fact that such a important individual would call upon a random soldier like him.
"..." Tatsumi just examined him. But he remained frozen in place.
"C'mon man, throw me a bone here! This is awkward as hell when I'm the only one talking!" Wave was having a mental panic. Was this guy not listening?! Or did he not simply care?!
"...navy?" Tatsumi decided to say something.
"Huh?" Wave was not expecting a response, so it was a little surprising.
"You with the navy? You smell like a barrel of dead fish." Tatsumi repeated with a slightly insulting remark.
"Uh...yeah, actually. I really loved the sea since I was born! My mother always told me that I spent more time on the water than I did on land. I guess it was just my calling, eheheh." He scratched the back of his head while chuckling to himself.
"Imperial Navy, huh? Specialized in naval warfare, and transporting VIP's to the nation's allies, if my memory serves." Tatsumi figured. He didn't meet any of the sailors, but this guy seemed to be a bit...mellow.
"By the way, is Phantom really your name? I figured it was more as just a name to play on the audien-"
"You can call me Tatsumi." Tatsumi cut him off. "You're part of that police unit Jaegers?" Tatsumi asked to confirm.
"Y-yeah." Wave nodded.
"...teh." Tatsumi scoffed.
"D-did I get on his nerves?" Wave thought he might have just made Tatsumi hate him. "So..what's your story? You were pretty impressive on stage! I didn't think that you'd possess one of the Teigu. Man, the world is pretty vast, eh?"
"Yeah? And I assume that is also one?" Tatsumi motioned his head toward the black short sword with a chain on the handle.
"Oh, yeah. This the Imperial Arms known as Grand Chariot. It's a very powerful suit of armor, but I try to only use it when the situation calls for it." He briefly explained.
"...hm." Tatsumi hummed.
"That uh, green sword was also one, right?" He decided to ask in turn.
"Yeah." Tatsumi nodded.
"Well...what does it do?" He hesitantly asked, expecting a little rundown on it's capabilities.
"Cuts people in half." He deadpanned.
"..."
"..."
"...?" Wave was patiently awaiting a further description.
...
...
...
...
"What?" Tatsumi asked, a bit annoyed Wave kept staring.
"Well, I...guess I meant it's abilites or...something along those lines." Wave sheepishily asked while scratching the back of his head.
"...oh." Tatsumi perked up, like he forgot to mention something.
"Y-yes?" Wave sweat dropped.
"With the air." Tatsumi held up his finger.
"THAT'S IT!?" Wave nearly fell over. "Like, seriously?! Is that all you can say about it? Doesn't it have a cool name or a signature move that makes it powerful or something?"
"What are you, a child? Sky Ripper is just a glorified blade of air." Tatsumi sighed and indulged him, simply because he was bored. "It basically turns the air into a condensed shape of my choosing, and can manipulate things that are in mid-air. Like a bullet for instance." He recalled the time he rescued the Green Hawks awhile ago.
"Sky Ripper..Wow. You must feel pretty lucky to be able to have one of those weapons." He sounded impressed.
"..." Tatsumi just turned away.
"Well, they all are certainly taking their sweet time. Did I come too early?" Wave wondered why it was only them there and not anyone else.
"I've been here for about an hour. I'm thinking of just going into that kitchen and doing it myself. These fuckers, taking their sweet time." Tatsumi sighed in frustration.
"So, what's it like in the capital? I've been to a few places, but it seems pretty vast, and beautiful. You're lucky to being able to live within the safety of the kingdom. But, I get the feeling it'll grow on me." Wave said in a positive fashion.
"...you..really aren't from around here, are you?" Tatsumi looked at him as if he was weird.
"Huh?" Wave made a curious brow. They heard the doors at the end of the room open, and in walked the rest of Wave's comrades, along with Esdeath, and a line of cooks behind her with carts full of food. Tatsumi slowly got up and kicked his chair, sliding it gracefully across the floor, and at the long dinner table. He stopped next to Wave and said something.
"If the rebels don't kill ya', there might be someone here that will." He whispered.
"Huh-?"
"Watch your back." He turned to Wave with a serious stare. "Cuz' no one else will." He patted Wave on the shoulder and went to go sit down. Wave was a little disturbed by what he said. He wondered what he meant by that. Was he trying to warn him of something? And if so, who would try something stupid like attacking a soldier of the empire in the heart of the city?
"I made the right choice to come here...right?" He tried to reassure himself.
