YOU'RE WHAT!

Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.

The awesome and talented dowlingnana searched out my errors and corrected them.

But, as she sat with the files open her mind followed down a different path; a path that had both her and Edward enjoying the afterglow of being together and having made love: not sex, but, love.

We've made a time leap in this chapter. Some violence does occur.

CHAPTER 16: DISASTER STRIKES

In all of the chaos surrounding the attempt to kidnap Edward or Edward and Bella, no one was sure which was the correct case at the moment, but, chances were it was both. It was widely believed that Edward and Bella were an item so it made since that it was meant to be both of them. With taking both of them, Bella, as Edward's love interest, could very well be used as a means to make Edward do whatever it was that the kidnapper would want him to do.

Sam and Felix were busily getting all of the information from everyone that had been involved, or, rather who had witnessed the kidnapping. And, from what Sam was learning it was becoming very clear that a very difficult phone call was going to have to be made and he would be the person to make that call. But, the team was going to need another best of an elite to deal with keeping the level of security to protect the three men and to do any undercover investigation. That was the area of expertise that Sam would be calling in.

With a shake of his head Sam walked over to the five people that were seated at the conference table. The two women were dealing with detailing everything in their report and the three men were in quite a state, looking a bit ashen in color and trying to figure out what else they could have done to stop what happened. Although, there was nothing they could have done since they were aware that the attempt was going to be made.

The guys had gotten quite comfortable in their attitude and outlook of things because of the lapse of time that has passed. It had been six months since they had witnessed the murders they had seen and reported after the first attempt was made to kill them. Their protection detail had done an excellent job of keeping the guys and their families safe in spite of some of the mishaps that had taken place in the beginning of the assignment. And, indeed, the heads of the detail had gotten close to their charges on a more personal level, but, never once did they drop the ball of doing their jobs to keep their charges safe.

"Okay, let's go over all of this once more. Alice, Rosalie, tell us again what all you did from beginning to end. Fill us in on the details you observed and what you noticed of the men and car that were involved in the kidnapping." Sam inquired of the two agents once more. He was trying to give the three men a little more time to get themselves together before he and Felix began to question them a bit closer about what they had noticed and done.

Everyone was beat and showing it after one of the most intense questioning they had ever gone through. The same thing gone over time and time again for five solid hours without a break and in Edward's opinion no one was any closer to a resolution than they had been at the beginning. The fact still remained that Bella had saved him and was missing herself; in plain English, she took his place and that was why he kept demanding to know who was looking for her. It seemed as if it was more important to get information than to have someone actively searching for Bella. Alice, Rosalie, Sam and Felix all tried to reassure him that everything that could be done was being done to trace her whereabouts. But, he wasn't believing them even though he would allow their arguments to appease him at the time until something else was mentioned that would start him off again.

He had no idea how long the other officers involved in the investigation of what had happened had remained on the scene gathering what evidence they could and talking to the other people that had been present at the restaurant at the time. Getting their information so it could be compared to what the five of them had told Sam and Felix.

However, Edward did notice how antsy Sam had been and how he seemed to be carrying some sort of dreaded burden upon his shoulders. The only things that he could conclud was that Sam was feeling guilty about Bella's abduction and that someone somewhere at some time was going to have to give Bella's family a call and he figured that that phone call was going to be falling to Sam to make.

He knew that Bella had a father that was in law enforcement back west in some small town from the little that she had told him, but, he wasn't sure exactly what the man did in that capacity because she was very reluctant to discuss his job with anyone, so, Edward was completely in the dark about how to get in touch with her father, and even puzzled if he, himself, should try to let the man know about what has happened to Bella since he and Bella were together in a more personal nature behind the scenes of her professionalism in keeping him and his friends safe.

Bella had told him that she had talked with her dad from time to time and had let him know that she was in a personal relationship with one of her current charges. She let Edward know that at first her father had been a bit upset about his daughter getting involved with one of her charges as he was afraid that it would interfere with her doing her job to the best of her ability. And, as Edward started to comment about that she quickly reassured him that after a bit her father accepted the idea, but, with reservations until she could prove to him that she could keep a separation between her job and her private life.

It was as they all were leaving that Alice made the comment, "I need to call Charlie to let him know about what has happened. Damn, that is-"

"Alice, don't worry about making that call just yet; at least, not until you've given me and the higher ups a chance to make the call." Sam was quick to interrupt her. He wanted to let both Alice and Rosalie know that a lot more needed to be discussed with Charlie Swan other than just the fact that his daughter had been kidnapped.

"You know that he isn't going to stay home waiting for updates concerning her, don't you?" Rosalie stated as at the same time she asked of Sam.

"Yeah, I know that we're going to have him camped upon our doorstep in no time. That's why I'm wanting to talk with him first before anyone else does."

"You mean no one else has called him yet?" Both women asked as one.

"I've asked for the call to be withheld until I've had a chance to gather all of the information we can and to try to get her back before they call him. They were reluctant about holding off, but, finally, they did agree.

"You two know as well as I do that they are aware of what his reaction is going to be regardless of whichever one of you had been taken. He would be on the warpath before the hat could hit the floor. Charlie Swan is very protective of what he considers to be his kids.

"Each and every one of you are very special to him and he'd give his life to keep you safe. And, I don't think either of the three of you truly understand how hard it's been for him to let you do the jobs that you've chosen to do. He's damn proud of all three of you and he knows how good each of you are at doing your job, but, that doesn't mean that it isn't hard for him to keep his hands off of pulling some strings and calling in favors to have you on desk jobs only.

"This type of phone call is the one that he has been trying to prepare himself to receive while praying that it would never come. It rates as only the second worse he could receive with the first being the death call. Charlie Swan, as well as Felix and myself, are very much aware of how it feels to get that kind of call, or, even, the feeling you have being the one delivering it to the family of a fallen comrade." Sam was explaining, but, before he or anyone else could make any further comments or ask any other questions, he received a phone call.

Sam took a look at who was calling and once he saw he quickly answered the call. But, except for answering the call a word never passed his lips until the end when he told whoever was on the phone, "I'll take care of it." After disengaging from the call he looked at the six individuals who were giving him their full attention. "It was discussed about whether you two, Alice and Rosalie, needed to be replaced on this assignment due to the current set of circumstances." He paused a moment as he saw that he was about to be interrupted, so, by raising his hand to halt any exchange from coming forth he continued, "As I was saying it was discussed, but, it was decided against replacing you. However, we do need to deal with Edward's protection, so, that is why I'm going to temporarily take charge until I can fill my replacement in on all aspects of this detail."

"I have just one question to ask, Sam and that is has the AAG Jacob Black been filled in as to what has occurred today?" Alice asked.

"That has taken place and it was he that was raising the question about replacing you two. However, as I said he was over ruled in that regards." Sam once again paused, waiting to see if anyone had anything else to say or ask before he finished with, "Now, I suggest that we all go on home while all of the material concerning the abduction of Bella Swan is gone over by those that are handling the investigation. Our main concern isn't in that area, but, in keeping our witnesses safe and sound." And with that said everyone made the move to leave in pairs; that is all, but, Edward, Sam and Felix.

"Don't I get a say in any of this? And why are we staying behind?" Edward asked looking at Sam and then at Felix.

"No, not really. The reason we're staying behind is because of a phone call that needs to be made and I thought that you would prefer to be present when it was made."

"What call?" Edward asked and then looking from one man to the other that was standing before him it suddenly dawned on him as to what phone call Sam was referring. It was then that all he said was, "Oh!"

The room was dark except for the one naked light swinging gently while hanging from the ceiling. Outside of that little bit of light there was no way to tell how large or small the room was. And, the darkness was also concealing the number of people that were or might be present at the moment. However, no sound could be heard coming from anyone except for the breathing coming from the one figure that was seen in a hanging position; arms stretched over the head as if reaching for the ceiling, but, the lines holding the figure in that position were so taunt that the figure was barely able to touch the floor with their toes. And with a glance down it could be seen by the figure that their upper body was bare except for one tiny bit of material.

It was as the figure was becoming fully conscious and aware of their surroundings that the sound of a leather strap snapped and then the sound of it making contact with bare skin could be heard as a piercing scream tore loose from the figure. The two sounds were repeated over and over for the count of three more times before they stopped. The session resumed after a fifteen-minute break and lasted just as long as the first. The next session begins after another fifteen minutes, but, this time the hanging figure lost consciousness.

A/N: During the six months that Alice, Rosalie and Bella have been keeping Jasper, Emmett and Edward safe their personal relationships started becoming much more solid. Now it seems that some kind of attempt was made to take Edward and Bella protected Edward once more and put herself at risk. How is Charlie going to take the news about Bella? What might he do? Who will be Sam's replacement in safeguarding Edward? And, what has happened to Bella?
