YOU'RE WHAT!
Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.
The awesome and talented dowlingnana searched out my errors and corrected them.
"There is a police officer that has a son working in the AG's office. It is the son that is supply his father with the information needed concerning certain cases. Then the father gets the information to the Volturi."
"Someone on the force? Tell me who the dirty cop is and I'll have them dealt with immediately." Det. Norris demanded.
CHAPTER 31: STAGE 2: THE REVEAL CONTINUES
"Det. Norris, no disrespect towards you personally or your department, but, I must withhold the name of the police officer from you at the moment for security reasons." Charlie spoke quietly, yet still loudly enough to be heard by everyone present.
"What damn security reasons?" Norris demanded to know. He was finding all of this secrecy frustrating. If there was proof of a dirty cop, then he wanted that person removed immediately.
"Before you get your ass up in the air, I would suggest that you take the time to hear the events from the beginning up to the present time." Alice told the annoyed detective. He wasn't trying to disguise the fact that he was upset about being denied a chance to bring down a dirty officer.
However, before another word could be uttered by the detective or others present, Edward told Det. Norris that he needed to maintain a bit of patience while the whole story was laid out before him. That hopefully by then he would understand the needed for the security measures that were being taken.
After taking a few moments to release some of the tension that he was feeling, Det. Norris asked, "Can we start with you all answering a few questions as to why Mr. Cullen, Mr. McCarty and Mr. Whitlock is being furnished protection by, what did you say, the FBI, instead of the police department? What is so important? I mean you would think if it was that important then surely top-ranking male officers would have been handling this case instead of any female squad?
"Now, don't get me wrong, female officers are good at what they do, but, if this is as important as what you have thus far told me, then I would have thought that their best team would have been put on these boys."
'We did go to the police and no one acted like it was of any big deal. But, we were quickly approached by some other source when a threat was made against our lives and we had reported that to the police also." Jasper was quick to give a response to the detective.
"Yeah, it didn't take long for the FBI to get involved and to turn this over to AGA Black of the DOJ's office and we were put under protective custody. And, we have been taught by experience that we have been placed under the protection of the best team that the FBI has that specializes in this particular area." Emmett supplied that information.
"And, Det. Norris, it was Ms. Swan that by her heroic actions, saved my life and ended up being admitted to this hospital due to her actions. She did her job-"
"What do you mean she did her job? You mean that Ms. Swan isn't your girlfriend? That she's an FBI agent?"
"That is correct. Agent Swan is the leader of our team and we each have been keeping one member of this trio safe for the last several weeks until they can go to trial and testify against the Volturi brothers." Rosalie added in her two cents worth.
Most of the people that were in attendance of this meeting were taking exception against the detective because of his outlandish comments about women officers and what they were capable of doing in the line of duty.
The tension was building again very quickly amongst everyone and Charlie felt like he had to defuse the situation before it got totally out of hand. So, he began by explaining what he had been doing for the last few days in search of his daughter. This explanation revealed how he was able to find her, how he was able to figure out the source of the leak in the AG's office and ended by telling Det. Norris about the death of his friend who also happened to be an undercover FBI agent.
After hearing all that Charlie had to say and added to the information that he had been given by everyone else, Det. Norris was more determined than ever to get rid of this dirty cop. So, his question to Charlie wasn't a surprising one. "Chief Swan, would you mind telling me who the dirty cop might be?"
"I think if you took a few minutes to consider all that you've been told then you will be able to recognize the person I'm talking about. However, if you do need a clue to point you in the right direction, I would suggest that you remember back to the alleyway when you first encountered the shoot out and had a lot of questions.
"In fact, you even had a call from your supervisor about transporting the young woman, my daughter, on to the hospital."
"How do you know all of this?"
"I told you I went undercover to find my daughter and the injured woman you found at the crime scene was and is my daughter. You have been assigned to handle the case of that shoot out and I was privy to your inept handling of the case.
"I was across the street watching all of the activity and made a call which resulted into you receiving a call. Need I say more?"
"No, sir. I do believe I fully understand all that you're telling me."
Before anyone could say anything else, everyone in the room heard Edward's name being quietly called out in the hallway. It seems that his parents had returned with everyone's order for lunch without anyone realizing how long their meeting had been going on. Edward opened the door and stepped halfway out into the hall as he told them and then asked, "Mom, Dad, I'm in here. Is there a problem?"
Both of his parents began walking to where Edward was standing, but, he motioned for them to go back into the waiting room, letting them know that everyone would be there in a moment. So, with a quick nod of the head his dad reached out and turned Esme back to the waiting room and Edward saw them enter the room before he stepped completely back into the room with everyone else.
"I think we need to call a close to this meeting before we get more innocent people involved in this tangled mess of things." Edward said to them all, but, before anyone could leave, Det. Norris turned to Charlie and commented, "Chief Swan, I'll quietly check into the facts that you've given to me and will get back with you. Where will you be?"
"Here." Was all that Charlie said as he moved towards the door to leave and return to Bella's room.
"Charlie, all of you, the only thing that hasn't been mentioned at this point is why my parents came here to see me." Edward's remark halted all movement as everyone waited for him to continue. Edward drew a breath and then continued to tell them what Carlisle and Esme had told him as to why they had arrived. He mentioned that his parents thought they had seen strangers parked near their home, about having a feeling of someone watching them or following them and a sense of someone having been in their home with things possibly being moved around.
As he told them this information there was silence before Alice breathed a sigh of frustration and then said that they needed to return to the waiting room where all of their food was. So, the meeting broke up. However, Sam, Felix, Charlie, Alice and Rosalie all were aware that AGA Black had not said one word or asked one question during the whole meeting. And, they did notice that while he was making the appearance of leaving, they had the impression that he was biding his time for some reason.
While Edward's parents were impatiently waiting for his return to the waiting room, Carlisle observed a male nurse walking down the hall, pausing now and then before moving a bit further down the hall towards Ms. Swan's room. The fact that it was a male nurse caught his attention since he hadn't seen one on this floor since arriving at the hospital. He stepped into the hallway to observe the nurse and was shocked by what he saw. The man dressed as a nurse was trying to act as if he was busy taking care of things for patients, but, instead, he wasn't doing a damn thing. With Carlisle being a doctor of some renown, he was knowledgeable about what was needed and what was only for busy show.
Carlisle looked back at his wife and motioned for her to come to the door which she did and was about to ask why when her husband held his finger up for silence. But, as he turned back to look out into the hallway the male nurse had suddenly disappeared. And, his disappearance had happened too quickly. This made Carlisle very nervous for some reason. Too many unusual things had been happening in his and Esme's lives lately, and he was determined more than ever now to get some straight answers as to what could be the reason why. Of one thing Carlisle was convinced is that it had to do with the reason Edward had questioned him and Edward's mother about why they had suddenly decided to visit with him.
Stepping completely out into the hallway, Carlisle looked up and down trying to locate where the man could have gone. But, a bad feeling kept persisting that something wasn't right with the man and that something bad was about to happen. So, as he started to move in the direction of Edward's girlfriend's room, he saw everyone coming out of the room that he had seen Edward at a short while before.
"Dad, I told you that we were coming." Edward said with a bit of puzzlement sounding in his voice as well as appearing upon his face.
"Edward, I'm not sure exactly what is going on with all of this secrecy, but, please, stop treating your mother and myself as if we are stupid fools."
"I'm not." Edward countered back, but, before he would continue on, Carlisle held up his hand and remarked that he didn't enjoy walking in a lot of bullshit. That it had a certain smell that couldn't be denied, and that Edward always had certain tell signs when he was being evasive or lying.
Before Edward had a chance to reply to the charge that Carlisle had levied against him Rosalie spoke up and asked, "Dr. Cullen, would you and Mrs. Cullen please join myself and Alice in private for a few moments?"
"Be more than happy to if it's going to lead to finally getting some answers. But, first I think you should know that I saw a man in the hallway just now dressed as a nurse and then he suddenly disappeared."
"Dr. Cullen, why would you be concerned about a male nurse?" Charlie asked.
"Because in all the time that we've been here with Edward I haven't seen a male nurse working this floor. Mind you, I'm not saying that they don't exist, but, this man was too concerned with appearing to be busy and then he suddenly disappeared."
And, with that statement being made, Charlie took off towards Bella's room with everyone not far behind. Throwing the door open Charlie saw a man he recognized standing beside Bella's bed holding her IV tubing in his hands. And it didn't take a nanosecond for Charlie to launch for the man as the others filed into the room at the same time.
"What the hell are you doing to my daughter?" Charlie demanded as he was steadily throwing punch after punch into the man with one hand as he was holding on to the guy with the other.
It took Sam and Felix to separate the two as the nurse that entered immediately behind everyone as she saw the rush towards her patient's room. The nurse was quick to determine the damage done to the man and left to gather the items needed to attend to his injuries. Edward, Emmett, Jasper and Edward's parents were all contained on the opposite side of the room out of the way along with AGA Black.
Alice saw a note laying at the foot of Bella's bed and quickly read through it. After that she passed it to Rosalie who turned it over to Felix and Sam. Charlie impatiently snapped his fingers in demand of seeing what the note said.
The note did say:
"This is just a warning that we're able to get to you or anyone associated with you if you don't keep your mouth shut."
AN: The note was pretty explicit as to its meaning, but, was the man really going to do something to Bella? Could what Charlie saw be misunderstood?
