"... The winner of each Duel will get their opponent's Puzzle Cards. Only those who collect six puzzle cards can reach the unknown location of the Finals! Now, let the Battle City begin! Duelists! Scatter across this city and locate your enemies!"
…
The Battle City tournament had begun. Duelists across the city scattered, looking for their opponents in an attempt to obtain six Puzzle Cards so that they could earn a place in the final eight of Kaiba's tournament. One of these duelists was Lucas's young, flirtatious friend, Jacob.
Jacob was walking down the street, heading towards a fancy cafe. He figured since the cafe was relatively close, Jacob could begin his search there, hoping he could find some attractive duelist from which he can win both a Puzzle Card, and if possible, a phone number. Jacob could not contain his excitement.
"Oh man!" exclaimed Jacob. "I can't wait to get my duels started! I wonder what kind of duelists we're gonna meet in Battle City. Maybe I can find a really cute date during this thing." Jacob placed his hands behind his head as he continued walking. Jacob looked up to the sky and muttered to himself: "I wonder where Lucas is going to be. It would have been great if we tried challenging people together. We'd make it to the Final Eight in no time."
As Jacob got closer to the Cafe, he noticed a young man with blond, bushy hair, blue jeans, and a blue and white shirt yelling at a much older man, who was taking a sip of his tea with his laptop open.
"Hmm? I wonder what the commotion is all about?" said Jacob. He continued his walk towards the cafe. As he got closer to the angry boy, Jacob noticed that the two individuals were wearing a Duel Disk. The guy sitting at the cafe was wearing similar clothing to that of the Rare Hunters him and Lucas had met a few days prior. Jacob's expression changed. He placed his arms down to his side and started walking faster towards the big crowd being formed by this angry blondie, determined to challenge the Rare Hunter. As Jacob walked past an alleyway, a deep, scratchy voice called out to him.
"Jacob Den."
Jacob turned to see a second Rare Hunter hiding in the shadows of the alleway. The cloaked figure signaled Jacob to follow him into the alley, away from the large crowd. Jacob followed the Rare Hunter, not noticing another boy with large, spiky hair stepping up to the Rare Hunter challenging him to a duel instead of his blond friend.
Jacob followed the Rare Hunter to an open area. This area was surprisingly big; there were high buildings surrounding this area; small little trees were located at each corner, as if they were just recently planted there; there were stairs leading to a lower level of the concrete platform. The lower platform was incredibly wide. If you wanted to, you could have held a tag team duel here.
"Jacob Den," said the Rare Hunter in his scratchy voice. "The owner of Exodia, The Forbidden One". Two more Hunters came out from behind separate trees and headed towards the entrance, blocking the way out of this isolated area..
"My reputation precedes me," responded Jacob, noticing the blocked entrance. "Although, I wished I would have attracted prettier duelists. What do you creeps want?"
"You see," said the leading Hunter. "Our organization specializes in collecting rare cards for our charitable clients. And someone just placed an order for YOUR set of Exodia."
"Oh?" Jacob gave the hunters a little smirk and responded with, "Is she cute?"
The hunters all gawked in confusion. "Excuse me?"
"I never realised these hoodies would make it hard for you to hear. Is she cute?!" shouted Jacob, raising his left hand up towards his mouth as if it would amp-up his voice.
"Why do you think our employer is a girl?" responded the hunter, confused at what Jacob was saying.
"Well is your employer a girl?" Jacob continued. "I mean if they heard of me and want my attention, then more than likely they would be a girl."
"Our employer is male." said the Hunter, halfway reconsidering whether or not to duel this kid.
"Well that stinks. I'm not really into guys," responded Jacob. "Not that there's anything wrong with that. If that's what you guys are into, then by all means. To each their own".
"Can… can we just duel?" The Hunter was uncomfortable with where this conversation had gone.
I'm sorry, Miss Ishizu, thought Jacob to himself. I'm not the best at keeping promises. Jacob raised his arm and activated his Duel Disk.
"Let's Duel!"
…
Ishizu was sitting in her office, looking out the window. As she looked out at the city before her, she placed her hand over her neck, feeling the Egyptian necklace she wore. The center of this necklace was an eye, and to the sides of the eye, there were "J" shaped plates, creating a border-like frame. She let out a small sigh, and headed over to a Duel Disk that was sitting on a table nearby.
"Mr. Den," Ishizu talked to herself as she prepared her outfit for the following evening. "If only you knew what will come about from this path you've taken".
…
(Round 1: Jacob 4000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"I'll start the duel!" The Rare Hunter drew his card. "Draw! I activate a Spell Card: Upstart Goblin. This card allows me to draw one card, and then you gain 1000 Life Points. And next, I activate a second Upstart Goblin!" Jacob's eyes widened.
This can't be good, thought Jacob as his opponent drew his second card.
"I'm not done!" shouted the Rare Hunter. He inserted two cards into his Duel Disk's Spell & Trap Card Zones. "I activate not one, but two Pot of Greeds!" He then drew four cards from his Deck.
"Got enough cards there?" shouted Jacob, trying not to break a sweat at how much the hunter drew during this turn.
The hunter was chuckling as he looked at the cards in his hands. He picked one other card from his hand and placed it onto the Monster Card Zone in a horizontal position. "I summon the Stone Statue of the Aztecs in Defense Mode. I end my turn!" The Rare Hunter held 7 cards in his hand. He was required to send cards from his hand to the Graveyard due to the rules of Duel Monsters in order to keep the 6-card hand limit by the end of your turn. In which case, the Rare Hunter sent a second copy of the Stone Statue of the Aztecs from his hand to the graveyard.
(Round 2: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
That statue of his has a Defense power of 2000. Jacob thought. And since these creeps don't know a thing about keeping a poker face, all that drawing must have really paid off. But why go on the defensive? What's he stalling for?
"I draw!" Jacob drew his card, and looked at the two monsters that was in his hand.
The two newest monsters I added to my deck. If he continues with the defensive, I'm going to have to use one of these cards. Jacob placed a card into his Duel Disk. I want to save one of these for Lucas in the finals.
"I activate my Spell Card: Painful Choice!" The Spell Card revealed itself onto the field. "This card allows me to pick 5 cards from my deck. You get to pick one of these cards and the chosen card will be added to my hand. The rest will be sent to the Grave." The Hunter was curious to see what Jacob was going to choose from this card's effect. Jacob went through his deck, picked out five cards and placed them in his pocket. He shuffled his deck and returned it to the Deck Zone. Jacob then placed the five chosen cards onto his Duel Disk's Monster Zones in a Face-Down vertical position, which was then projected to the opponent. The hunter raised a brow in surprise as to what Jacob was showing him. "Now pick from one of these five cards! Either the Left Leg of the Forbidden One; the Right Leg of the Forbidden One; the Left Arm of the Forbidden One; the Right Arm of the Forbidden One; or Exodia, the Forbidden One!"
"So you're going to activate two Dark Factory of Mass Production, a spell card that lets you add 2 Normal Monsters from your Graveyard to your hand for each copy that you play. This way you can assemble Exodia faster! I can only imagine you have a way to retrieve the Exodia head to you hand with ease," stated the Hunter, trying to guess at what Jacob's strategy was.
"Actually!" stated Jacob before his opponent was about to pick one of the Exodia pieces. "I only run one Dark Factory in my deck! If any of the arms or legs of Exodia would be sent to the graveyard, I won't be able to assemble all five pieces!" The Hunter began laughing. He could not believe how stupid this kid was. Not only did he just tell his opponent that he has little means of retrieving any Exodia pieces from his Graveyard, but the young boy is getting rid of what could have been his only way of defeating the Rare Hunter. Little did Jacob knew, from the six cards the robed figure held in his hand, he had already assembled four of the five pieces of the Forbidden One.
All I need is the head of Exodia and I can win this duel, thought the Hunter.
"You're a fool, Jacob Den!" He revealed his hand out of ego. "With the exception of an extra Right Arm and a Giant Soldier of Stone, I have already assembled four of the pieces needed to summon Exodia. While you decide to throw away your Exodia, which was probably the only means you have of defeating me, all I need to do is draw a single head from my deck, and I win. And as you saw from my first turn, having a deck full of defensive monsters to protect my life points, spell cards that allows me to continue drawing, and with three copies of each Exodia cards in my deck, it's only a matter of time before I obliterate you and your set of Exodia is all ours."
"So are you going to pick a card or should I pull up a chair?" said Jacob mockingly.
"Hmph. I choose the Head of Exodia!" Jacob placed the chosen card into his hand, and sent the other four cards to his graveyard, preventing him of summoning Exodia for the remainder of this duel.
"I will now summon The Head of Exodia, in Defense Mode!" The card of the Forbidden One appeared onto the field, and from the image, a stream of light rose from the card and in an instant, the head of the mighty creature appeared. "I end my turn".
(Round 3: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"I draw," The Hunter gritted his teeth out of disappointment. The card he drew was neither the final piece of Exodia or a spell card that allows him to draw more cards. He placed this card he drew into his hand, and placed a different card from his hand onto his Duel Disk in a horizontal position. "I summon the Giant Soldier of Stone in Defense Mode. I end my turn."
(Round 4: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
He didn't draw a spell card, Jacob thought in relief. "I draw," Jacob looked at the Dark Factory that he had just drawn into, continuing in his thoughts: I guess having a deck filled with defensive monsters and extra Exodia pieces makes it difficult for someone to draw exactly what they need. "I activate the Spell Card, Dark Factory of Mass Production! Now I add the two Arms of the Forbidden One from my Graveyard to my hand. And next I summon the Right Arm of the Forbidden One in Defense Mode. I end my turn."
(Round 5: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"What are you planning?" Jacob's opponent asked as he drew his card. "You have admitted to me that you only have one copy of Dark Factory in your deck. You do not have any other means to summon Exodia! I summon Gear Golem, the Moving Fortress in Defense Mode," a large goldish machine covered with silver, spiked barriers had appeared onto the field. "Even if your plan was to summon a high level monster strong enough to penetrate my fortress of Defensive Golems and Statues, I will have already assembled Exodia. Whatever move you make is pointless."
(Round 6: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"Well if that's the case," responded Jacob as he drew his card and placed the Left Arm of the Forbidden One in a horizontal position onto his Duel Disk, thus projecting the second arm onto the field. "What's taking you so long to summon Exodia."
(Round 7: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"Grrrr. I draw my card!" The Hunter grunted out of frustration for he had drawn a second left leg. "I summon the Left Leg of the Forbidden One in Defense Mode. I end my turn."
(Round 8: Jacob 6000 Rare Hunter 4000)
"I draw," Jacob placed the card he just drew into his Duel Disk. "Your wall of defense is impressive, but it cannot match up to this. I activate the Spell Card: Raigeki!" The card appeared onto the field, intimidating his opponent. The opposing Hunter had his mouth dopped, seeing all of his defensive monsters being destroyed in an instant as a giant lightning bolt struck from Jacob's card and onto all of his monsters at the same time. In an instant, all of the Rare Hunter's monsters shattered. "In case you didn't know, Raigeki is a Spell Card that destroys all of your monsters, regardless of position."
"Urg," the Hunter scowled in anger. He could not believe what had happened, how his defense was removed in just an instant. But even then, he was able to show a grin. "Even if I lost my monsters, none of the monsters you have on the field are strong enough to take me out this turn. It's only a matter of time before I draw into one of my three Exodia heads and win this duel!"
"But who says you get to draw your next card?" Jacob sent all three pieces of Exodia on his side of the field to the Graveyard. "I sacrifice 3 Spellcaster-Type monsters in order to summon the ultimate Spellcaster! I summon Testament of the Arcane Lords!" A magical circle had appeared above the duelists. This circle adorned the most intriguing of writing. One could claim this circle to be of Egyptian origin. In a slow-pace, a pair of golden foot-wear lowered from the circle. The feet soon revealed the legs it came from, and then golden clothing began to take form. Soon after, the torso and arms began to appear from this circle, all of which shimmering a golden light. Once the head had appeared from this magical portal, the golden figure was in complete view. This beautiful, goddess-like being radiated a bright, blinding light. This light engraved fear onto the Rare Hunter.
"Y-you think that scares me?!" The opposing player trembled at the sight of this monster. "That monster only has 3000 Attack Points! Even if you attack with this creature, I will have just enough Life Points to see you terror in the face of my Exodia!"
Jacob smirked at the sight of the Rare Hunter, the fear of confusion and concern as to what this creature was. "And here I thought Rare Hunters knew everything there is to a rare card," the hunter jerked his attention to Jacob with extreme concern as to what he was talking about. "My beautiful entity has quite the ability! When she lands a direct attack and inflicts battle damage onto your Life Points, if I successfully summoned her by tributing 3 Spellcaster-Type monsters, I win the duel, regardless of how many Life Points you have left!"
"There are other Instant Win cards besides Exodia?!" The Rare Hunter had feared for his life as if it was about to be taken away from this divine being.
"Testament of the Arcane Lords! Attack the Rare Hunter directly!" Similar to Exodia's attack, the Testament brought her hands together, creating a ball of energy. As the creature rushed towards the opposing player, she raised the energy ball towards the sky and crashed the energy ball into the Rare Hunter, immediately dropping his life points to zero.
"Argh!" The Rare Hunter fell on his back, losing consciousness as he hit the ground. Jacob raised his fist into the air, bragging his victory.
"Alright! One down," Jacob turned to face the two Rare Hunters. They activated their Duel Disks. "Two to go!" Jacob raised his arm preparing his Duel Disk. The two Hunters were giving a smile only a low-life creep would give. They knew they had the advantage over Jacob. A 2-on-1 duel was hardly fair.
As the duel was about to begin, a scratching, almost scattering sound was being made from behind the two goons blocking the entrance. As they turned, a giant, insect-like creature was scurrying towards the Hunters. The creature had a pair of antennae, six legs, and the torso of a mutated spider. This creature appeared to have female attributes in its appearance. Seeing the bright, blue eyes from this ginormous bug frightened the Hunters and had them running, screaming into the arena.
Jacob almost jumped out of his shoes, if he had not notice one of the legs phasing through the wall of the alley. The creature was not real, but rather a hologram of the duel monster, Insect Queen. The hologram began to disappear into its card, and from the alleyway, a young man walked in.
The boy was about 5'10", maroon hair, royal-green eyes that matched his blazer. He wore a black T-shirt under his blazer, tucked into a pair of blue jeans. The boy wore white socks and black crocs. He stood before Jacob and the Rare Hunters laughing at how pathetic the Rare Hunters were screaming their lungs out.
"Hahaha! Oh man. You should have seen the look on your faces. And these are suppose to be the big, bad Rare Hunters?" The boy continued to laugh and mock the two hunters. The two now humiliated, gritted their teeth out of anger and embarrassment as the young stranger walked up to Jacob's side.
"Seriously, Jacob, these guys are supposed to be the thugs who are said to be working with the underground world?"
"I'm sorry, Peter," responded Jacob with his eyes closed and raising his hands in a gesture that says, I thought I knew. "I thought these guys were a big deal. But if they got scared by a measly bug, then I guess they aren't that tough." The two looked at the Rare Hunters with a sly grin, mocking the organization. The two hunters gritted their teeth, and raised their Duel Disks. One pointed towards the young boy who we now know as Peter.
"Look here, you little brat! You better learn to show us a bit more respect if you know what's good for you!"
Peter eyes widened, surprised to see these hunters talking big after the sounds of their screaming still lingering in the back of his head. He then glanced over to the hunter that Jacob had defeated and turned back to the two.
"I'm so sorry, Mister," Peter began, lowering his head in a bow and as he rose back up, he stuck his tongue out at the two hunters. "But if a grown man is going to pass out from playing a simple card game, and his buddies are screaming like kids at the sight of a bug, then how am I supposed to show any sign of respect to you guys if you are making yourselves look bad." Jacob glanced over at Peter, not believing what he is hearing.
Wow, Peter. Jacob thought to himself. Are you done yet? Peter took notice of Jacob's expression, smiled a bit, and then raised his Duel Disk. Jacob did the same in raising his arm.
"Just to make things clear," Peter stated, as he activated his Duel Disk. "The name's Peter Kochou, and this is NOT going to be a Tag duel! It's just going to take longer than things have to get."
"Tag duel or 1-vs-1. It doesn't matter!" shouted one of the Rare Hunters. The other continued: "We are still going to beat you kids and take your rarest cards away!"
"Just try it!" shouted Jacob.
All four shouted in unison: "Duel!"
…
Note: The original effect of "Testament of the Arcane Lords" is different from what it is in this chapter, but for convenience purposes, I alter this effect so that it better fits the situation at hand. I will be doing this for other monsters with similar abilities in future chapters.
