"Sam! Dean!"
He ran swiftly through the dark woods, night dew dampening the dress shoes on his feet. His baby blue eyes reflected the glow of the full moon to an almost ethereal glow. It was over, they had won. But Cas was only filled with fear as Dean's latest prayer and words drummed in his head.
"Goodbye, Cas."
He ran faster.
Cas burst into the clearing where it was obvious the final battle occurred, And then he found them.
"No!" he cried out. His paced quickened as he neared the bodies sprawled on the ground. Castiel dropped to his knees beside them, and placed the fingers of both hands on their foreheads, desperately searching for any spark of life left in their bodies. Nothing reached his angelic senses.
Cas fell back from his kneeling position in the damp grass, tears filling his blue eyes. He turned his face up to the heavens as the salty wetness streamed down his cheeks. Sam and Dean Winchester were dead.
The brothers were laying side by side facing each other. Their hands clutched the coat of his brother as they held each other on their dying breaths. Sam, ever the little brother, grasped Dean's jacket in both hands, seeking reassurance and comfort. Dean's hand rested on Sam's cheek, the big brother, giving reassurance and comfort. Cas could almost hear their final whispers to each other, words meant for their ears only.
After what felt like hours, the angel straightened and did what had to be done. And as he later stood beside the sleek black Impala, the flames of the pyre almost blistering on his skin, he spoke.
"Sam, Dean, you saved the world. You have made me who I am today. These years knowing you have been the best I've ever known. It is over. Your work is done." Cas sighed, "I wish it didn't end this way."
He turned and opened the driver's door of the Impala with it's familiar squeak and got in, but not before turning back to the flames, "Farewell my friends."
