This is a bonus chapter
Maite pushes two people together with no knowledge of the issues that exists among them. As she is happily drinking more with Kiki, Hayden and Drew are stuck together... What can go wrong? For story purposes Jason coming back is a year earlier and Drew and Sam are divorced at this point and just co-parenting Scout and Oscar is just Kim's kid.
Drew opens the passenger side for Hayden, and she gets in. She looks out the window and it seems she is trying to make herself smaller than she is.
"Where do you want to go?" Hayden didn't really know how to answer that because she is still trying to wrap her head around the fact that she is in her car being driven by Drew. The same Drew she had conned in the past.
"My condo is on Dickens Street." The air is so charged and awkward because so many things have gone unsaid by both sides.
"You're not living at the Metro Court anymore?" Drew grits this out as he comes to a red light.
"Well I'm still in the process of moving stuff around and ordering. I have to buy cookware."
"Hayden you cannot cook so just save yourself the money." Drew laughs at this and Hayden rolls her eyes.
"I'm taking classes and what do you even care it's not like you would come for tea…" Hayden feels a slight bit on edge from being in the car with Drew it makes her harsher than she intended.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound so harsh. This is just weird and it's my fault for getting my newest employee drunk and it brings us here." She realizes all of this rests on her.
"Meh, it's not so bad watching you squirm." Hayden just stays silent and looks out the window and Drew just looks at her and feels a little shocked he feels bad.
"God… why is the traffic so freaking horrible." Her hand bangs the console and goes back to looking at the window.
"Hey… hey! I'm sorry I won't do it anymore." Drew can see that she is as uncomfortable as he is, and he starts to regret listening to a drunk woman who calls him a Mazda.
"Good. I just want to go home and be done with this day."
"How was your day?"
"Why would you even care how my day went?"
"I'm trying to make it less awkward between us and forget the bad blood for a second since I am the one tasked with taking you home." Drew finds he can speak to Hayden without gritting his teeth.
"Well if you must know that woman who put us in this predicament is a financial phenom unlike anyone I've heard of and I convinced her to work for the hospital. A woman with expertise to be at top hedge funds or revamping companies making them powerhouses agreed to be my consultant."
"That woman who couldn't stop giggling is a finance savant?" He actually looks at Hayden and waits to hear the answer.
"Maite's father is one of the biggest reasons Jarritos soda has 6000 bottles of soda cross the border each minute. And her father has been on the record several times saying she is better than him. I landed better than the best." Hayden smiles for the first time because it's sinking into her that what she was able to achieve is a feat.
"So, she really is a big deal…"
"Yeah she is a huge deal… she's worked for Carlos Slim and still works for Jarritos but it's not a conflict so I'm glad she said yes. I am going to introduce her to the board in a couple days and I hope they like my choice." Drew seems really impressed with what Hayden has said.
"It seems like you know your stuff too." He finds that he means it.
"Before my dad or at least the man who raised me swindled lots of people like a wannabe Madoff he taught me stuff. I went to business school because I was so proud of having such an intelligent man as my father. Now it's something that I actively run away from." Hayden didn't mean to make this some heart to heart, but she couldn't help but want this to come out.
Drew finally makes it to Hayden's street and goes into the parking garage and she tells him where he can park. He parks the car and Hayden looks at him for a long second and then shifts and takes her seat belt off.
"You seem to be able to bounce out that shadow. You are the CEO of a hospital now and calling the shots."
"I get a lot of latitude, but the board is what really has the shots." Drew just nods even though he is a part of the board. She takes her seat belt off and he follows her because it gets awkward again because he doesn't know what to do. She takes her keys from him and starts walking and he follows her and uses her fob and they get in the elevator. The silence is confusing but not awkward like they don't know what to say to each other.
"I think we should address the elephant in the room…" Drew says this as they are walking to her condo and Hayden's shoulders raise slightly and Drew cautiously puts his hands on her shoulders and his touch calms her. "It's okay… I'm ready to listen… I'm still mad but its more of a passive mad then the exploding anger I used to feel…" He's so close and Hayden closes her eyes and she is satisfied Drew is behind her so he can't see her vulnerability.
"Okay…" She turns and nods her head as her words come out in a whisper. She opens the door to her condo.
"Can I get you something to drink?" Hayden does her best to be polite as she realizes her sister and nephews have been the only ones inside her condo. She certainly doesn't ask them if they want anything they just go as they please.
"Umm… what do you have?" He starts to follow her, and she finds that it makes her nervous in a way she doesn't want to want. She opens her fridge and he sees myriad flavors of cranberry juice and water.
"Wow… I forgot how much you loved cranberry juice. I'll take cranberry and pomegranate." She finds herself trying to wipe away her smile because that's her favorite flavor. She gets two glasses to fill the juice.
"I forgot take off your shoes and set them by the door." She sets the glasses down at the coffee table and does the same. When she takes off her shoes Drew is reminded of just how short she is. They make their way to her sofa and she seamlessly gets a pillow and hugs it.
Drew takes a sip of his cranberry juice and sets it down and just uses the back of the sofa to prop his arm to rest his head in his hand.
They just look at each other for a good minute in silence and Drew raises his eyebrows for her to talk.
"Okay! After my dad did what he did I couldn't get a job anywhere. I went into business to be just like him. I thought he was such a noble guy helping people like teachers get the best pensions. My life changed so dramatically in such a small amount of time. I didn't even work with my dad at that point, but it didn't matter. I was fired from my job and then my ex got in a drunk driving accident that left a teenager paralyzed. He tried to drain our savings but I filed for divorce so they would freeze our assets so he couldn't try to use my life earnings to pay off lawyers. I met the girl's parents and they were teachers and I just broke down. My dad fleeced people just like them.
I begged them to let me help with their daughter's care because I married a man who proved to be weasel. At first, they wanted to say no, but her mom finally revealed their insurance would only cover so much and I was in a desperate place because everything around me was falling. I realized I couldn't touch my savings because it would likely have to be used for Megan's care. I didn't want to be like my father, and I wanted help this girl whose life was destroyed with my car!" She takes a sip of her cranberry juice and has take a breath because her emotions are running her ragged. Hayden is not an overly emotional person by nature, but she couldn't help the water running down her face.
"I changed my name to escape the death threats and just being stuck in the nightmare my father left my mother and I to face. Ric hired me to just pretend to be your wife so he could have a chance with Elizabeth. I did feel bad about hurting you, but I couldn't do what I loved, and I had to resort to becoming a con artist. When I changed my name, I had no job history anymore. I couldn't use my degree with Rachel Berlin on it. I couldn't get any job in New York. I felt the walls closing in and I had to do worse things to survive. Drew I'm so sorry that I manipulated you and used your memory loss against you. I never really apologized for what happened because I'm a coward who only knows how to run." Hayden hugs the pillow tighter and she is so upset with herself for showing so much emotion when she has prided herself on her temperament.
"It's incredibly wrong what you did and some days Hayden I felt such anger that made me just want to go to the gym and punch a bag for hours." Even understanding her circumstances better, he feels he is entitled to how he feels because he was made into a mark and exploited.
"Drew…"
"I'm not finished!" He looks at her making herself smaller which is a feat considering how tiny she is.
"What made my anger so explosive Hayden is that you didn't try to atone for what you did… You did run away but you stayed in Port Charles and I was reminded of what you did every time I saw you. It just made my anger magnify to see you just walking around." Drew has to unclench his jaw and Hayden drops her head into the pillow.
"Hayden stop hiding from me."
"Stop antagonizing me!" She throws the pillow and gets in his face. It's intense because she feels herself breathing hard.
"I'm not mad anymore… at least not anger inducing levels. I just wanted you to apologize that's it." Drew has to look up since Hayden is standing in front of him and she feels awkward being in front of him and knowing she has his forgiveness. Him looking up at her with his vivid blue eyes gives her a feeling that abhors to feel because she doesn't want to feel anything.
She finds herself moving without thinking and finds herself straddling him and her arms wrapped around his neck. She just stares at him and he says nothing while her tears magnify. She scoots herself closer and lays her head on his shoulder and holds tight and just cries. Drew doesn't really know what to do so he just wraps his arms around her back which brings her even closer and he has to think of dry ice on his balls to calm himself down.
Hayden literally uses his shoulder to cry on and after she's all cried out her body feels heavier to Drew like she's putting all her weight on him and he realizes she fell asleep. He thinks to himself what on Earth led him to this and it goes back to the woman Hayden hired.
"Hayden… wake up… come on wake up…" Drew speaks to her in a gentle voice and uses his knuckles to graze her face and wake her up.
"Ugh… I ruined your shirt…" Drew looks over his shirt where Hayden's head was, and his eyes bug out by the amount of makeup that went to his shirt.
"My goodness Hayden…" They realize that she is still straddling him, and Hayden feels she must look crazy with half her face with beyond ruined makeup and Drew just looks up at her and the air around them is charged and their foreheads touch and their lips touch just barely. Drew's hand finds its way into Hayden's hair and lightly scratches her scalp which makes her moan in his mouth.
"We should stop right?" Even as Hayden says this, she is licking her lips with her eyes closed which does things to Drew he hasn't felt in a while.
"Yeah I should finish my cranberry juice and go. You should get some sleep because you have a big day coming soon and you have people to impress including me." Drew sneaks a quick kiss before Hayden can react it brings a smile she tries to hide. He taps on her to get up from his lap and she does so gracelessly. After her plop onto the sofa she gets up and walks him to the door.
"How are you gonna get home?" Hayden was curious because it was her car he drove.
As he takes steps closer to her, she took steps back and hits the back the wall and Drew takes the opening.
"I'm just going to take an uber to Metro Court and pick up my car." Drew is so close to Hayden she shivers, and Drew knows what she needs and slides his hands up and down her arm for a sec and then he's out the door.
After the door clicks Hayden opens her eyes and tries to figure out what the hell just happened.
"This is the last time I do day-drinking on a Tuesday." Hayden makes her way to the bathroom and screams when she sees how she looks in the mirror and to think someone saw her looking like this let alone making out with them was a feat.
I don't even know why but I just started writing this and I couldn't stop. Maite drunk pushes two people who had a really complicated history together and didn't take no for an answer. Where does this leave Hayden and Drew? Next chapter we will see Hayden introducing Maite to the board which includes Michael and his parents hmm?
