Bliss-Marie's Pov:

"He's gone, and it's your fault!" Katherine's voice snapped.

"They are dead because of you!" One of my best friends, Jack's, voice snapped harshly.

"You are nothing," my other best friend Crutchie's voice spoke.

"You don't deserve to be here, gutter rat," Snyder's snapped. I couldn't stop the voices getting louder and louder.

I shot awake with a start sweat stuck to my oversized top making it cling to my small frame it felt as if my heart had been viciously ripped from my body as the blood pounded in my ears. I knew that it was a dream, that was all it ever was. I was safe in the comfort of the Newsboy Housing Lodge. So, why was it that I felt like something was suffocating me? I let out a deep, unsteady breath, the agonizing liquid appeared, in a cloud of white smoke, to only slowly evaporate, into nothing.

My eyes wandered around my half-size room. The four plain white walls felt as if they were going to swallow me like when I python swallowed its prey. I flung the thin sheet that covered me away, however, I instantly came to regret it as the stale air danced on my exposed skin.

Ignoring the stabbing pains I was getting which cascaded down my legs, I stumbled over to the fogged-up window, gently pushing it open I walked outside onto a small fire escape, the weather was miserable, the rain came thundering down bouncing on the cobbled streets below as if the droplets were having a jumping contest to see who can jump the highest. I knew that this rain would be bad for business, especially when you are a Newsie. I slowly started making my way up the fire escape to where my two best friends usually sleep. The paint was slowly peeling off revealing the brown, rusted metal underneath when I made it up to the top of the building, the rain droplets soaked into my pale skin, also into my clothes making them heavier than usual.

I let out a sigh as I turned to look over the rooftops of Manhattan thinking about how my life has changed since The Refuge,

"Bliss?" I heard a masculine voice say from the right of me I turned to face the source to see one of my best friends Jack Kelly stood there, his dark green eyes, were laced with concern as he looked at me, his short brown hair which was tucked underneath his grey Newsie cap.

"What 're ya doin' outta here?" He asked, his accent slipping from his lips, as he walked over to me and wrapped his arms around me as if to trying to keep me warm,

"I'es needed to think," I said, turning my head a little to look at him.

"It's freezin'," Jack responded as he tightened his grip, a small sigh escaped my lips as I melted into his arms.

"It might be, but, it's a good place to do some thinkin'," I reasoned as I turned around to look back at the city of Manhattan. I heard a soft sigh escape from Jack as we stayed like this for a while before we were interrupted.

"Ey! Jack youse up there?" Race's voice sounded up the stairs. "We's got work to do!" I rolled my eyes and turned to Jack.

"Let's go Carry the Banner," he said as he stepped away from me, and back down the stairs. I stayed rooted on the spot, looking over at the stairs which Jack just walked down.

The single thought in my head I was falling for my best friend. I was in serious trouble.
