***LAST CHAPTER (31) HAS BEEN UPDATED***
So, let me start out by apologizing for not touching this story for so long, or any story, really. When I first started writing this, I was in my freshman year of college and I had time in between classes for writing. But as time went on, I had picked up more shifts at work, and my later semesters weren't spread so far apart. I had less and less time to write, much less to do things in general. I was torn between spending what little free time I had on writing and a number of other things. Those things eventually outweighed my want to write. So in other words, shit got real for me, and I was doing a lot of crap I didn't want to, (Mainly work and school) and I never had the time to really sit down and crank out a chapter.
But I'm hoping this will change. I still want to see this story to its end, I've spent WAY too much time planning it out not to. I've also been getting more and more notifications recently of new followers/reviews and such, and I feel horrible for not updating.
So along with this new chapter, I also tacked on a good bit more to the last chapter, since I didn't feel too good about how small the last one was, though this one is in fact quite short. I just wanted to get something out there as soon as possible. So you might want to go back and read over chapter 31. You actually see an example of Castiel's poems (Not a haiku, I promise) and a bit of existential drama. (I refrain from saying relationship drama) Now, without further ado, here's the long-awaited chapter 32.
(BLD)
It seemed no one realized just how bad this storm would be. When Dean had gotten home and finally gotten into bed, it had just started raining. Though as he woke in the morning, he'd been unsure if it even was morning, seeing as how it was just as dark as when he'd fallen asleep. He checked the time on his phone, giving a yawn and stretching out over his bed. Sure enough, it was 8 AM. He got up out of bed and looked through the blinds of his window, hearing and feeling the deep rumbles of thunder and lightning. It was indeed dark outside, the clouds covering any trace of the sun.
"What the fuck…" he grumble, his body still aching from his odd sleeping position. He gave another yawn as he groggily turned on his bedroom light and began putting clothes on. Though a loud, uproarious thunder clap made him jump slightly, the force making the house shake, followed by an extremely loud buzzing sound, and some sort of light flashing outside to make it seem as if the sun were out for just a split second, and a moment later the lights went out.
"Fucking great!" Dean roared. He was much quicker about shoving himself into a pair of pants, nearly tripping in the darkness. He patted around on his bed in search of his phone and gave a sigh of relief once he found it, turning on its flashlight and making his way out the door.
"Sammy?" he called out through the house, not sure if he'd gotten up earlier than he had. When he didn't get a response, he went for his brother's bedroom door, knocking with his knuckles.
"Get up, Sam. There's a freak storm raging and the damn power just went out. Think it might have hit a transformer." He spoke through the door. He could hear Sam groan, clearly not happy about being woken up.
"What?" was his sleepy reply.
Dean rolled his eyes then opened the door, "Get up, Freakazoid, we got a situation."
Sam was stretching his arms over his head, yawning, "Its only a rain storm…" he countered through a yawn.
Dean sighed, "Yea well, it must have grown stronger overnight, cause we're in the dark right now."
Sam was rubbing a hand through his hair, "Wait..." he slowly sat up and was able to hear the thunder and lightning for himself. The rain sounded heavy as it hit the roof, and it was definitely not something you'd want to be out and about in.
Dean shook his head, "Come on. Gotta access the situation." He told his brother before leaving his room and going out into the hall. The first thing he did was call Bobby. He should be up by this point.
Thankfully he was right, "Hello? What's got you callin' me so early?"
Dean gave a nervous chuckle, "Well, firstly I'd appreciate it if you could pull up the weather channel and tell me what the hell is going on. And secondly, we just lost power a few minutes ago. It sounded like lightning hit a transformer." He explained.
"Oh hell…" Bobby mumbled before going about the house and turning on the TV. "Hmmm…" he mumbled and was silently listening to the forecast for a moment.
"Yep. It definitely grew overnight." He told Dean, "I thought it was just gonna be a little rain. Not this crap…" he mumbled. "Says there's a tornado warning in effect until 5." He sighed, "I guess I need to start makin some phone calls." He grumbled.
"Sooo…" Dean began, one foot tapping slightly on the floor, "Does this mean I don't have to come in today?" he questioned, only a little excited.
Bobby chuckled, "It's your lucky day." He mumbled.
Dean grinned, "Too bad I can't watch TV… Or heat up some leftovers… Or watch where I pee." "Alright, I get it, Boy." Bobby interrupted.
"If ya'll need to come over, you're more than welcome. I'd just be careful tryina get through all this." Bobby warned.
Dean thought it over, "If we really need to, we will. Not sure when the power will be back on, so it's a high possibility." He told him. "I'll call and give you a heads up if we do." He informed him, then they told each other to stay safe and hung up.
By this point, Sam had gotten up and slipped on a sweater. The temperature in the house was beginning to drop, and Sam could feel it. "Sooo, I think I'm gonna call Frank." He mumbled. "Well, actually, maybe in another hour. I don't know when he shows up to work." He sighed. He had his phone's flashlight pointing up at the ceiling, so he'd be able to see Dean's face without actually shining it in his eyes. "I really don't wanna wake that guy up."
Dean chuckled, "Yea, you do that." He then went downstairs, his phone guiding his way, and came up to the front door. Slowly he opened it, and thankfully he had a firm grip on the door handle as a harsh wind threatened to snatch it right out of his hands. The rain was coming in sideways, and getting Dean soaked. He could hardly make out much of anything outside other than what looked to be thick black ropes laying on the road out front.
"Oh shit…" he cursed in realization, "Sam, it wasn't just a transformer that broke. The whole damn pole came down." He shouted at Sam who was still upstairs. Soon though he came down and joined him, looking out the front door.
"Oh my God." Sam mumbled, seeing the power cables strewn out over the road, the pole across the street broken down the middle, the transformer now resting on the asphalt. The brothers looked to one another for a moment, realizing they'd probably be stuck there for a while. The cables had fallen, literality, right in front of their driveway, stopping either car from leaving.
Dean quickly closed the door once they'd had their fill of curiosity and torrential rain. Dean shook himself much like a dog, much to Sam's dismay, a hand going up to block his face from the drips.
"So what the hell do we do now?" Sam asked, knowing they couldn't stay in the house with the power out, but they couldn't really leave with their cars blocked.
Dean gave a sigh, a hand on his hip as the other ran through his bed head. "Well, I mean…"
Just then, Dean's phone chirped with a notification. He quickly checked, and unfortunately, it was an email notification of an up coming bill that was about to be taken out of the account. He currently had enough for it to be paid for, but that also meant he'd have no more money until next pay down. The day had gone from bad to worse, but of course, he wasn't about to mention this to Sam.
Though almost like a Godsend, he received a notification while still looking at his screen. It was a text. From Castiel.
Good morning, Dean.
It was short and sweet, and managed to make Dean smile, despite his morning thus far. His eyes widened as he got an idea. He quickly looked up to Sam with a grin.
"How about we hang out with the Autmans." He suggested.
Sam's brow quirked, "What?"
Dean chuckled, feeling just as excited and giddy as he had yesterday, "I'm gonna ask Cas to come pick us up and hopefully we'll get to hang out today." He told him, already texting Castiel back before Sam could give any input.
Hey Cas! I know this is sudden, but I was wondering if maybe you could come pick up me and Sam? This storm knocked out the transformer pole right in front of our house, and we have no power, and we can't really leave until some comes out to fix it.
Dean began to explain, then sent a follow up text.
I understand if you can't but I was hoping to at least spend a little more time with you today, seeing as how I now have the whole day off.
Dean now found himself quite nervous, hoping this wasn't too much too soon. He really did want to hang out with Castiel, but he also hoped Castiel didn't find his eagerness annoying.
"Wait, so like, we'll be going to their…family home, or Castiel's house?" Sam suddenly asked. Sam seemed to have an uneasy look about him, though as to why that was, Dean had no idea.
"I don't know, I think all the son's are staying at the family home right now, to be close to their dad." Dean shrugged, though honestly, he was unsure.
"Oh…so…that would mean… Lucifer would be there, too?" Sam asked, seeming even hesitant to ask, looking at his hands as he rubbed them together slightly, as if to make warmth.
Dean squinted his eyes at him, "What, you don't like Lucifer, or something? Last I heard, you guys were really hitting it off."
Sam suddenly looked up at Dean, incredulous, "What? Who said that?"
"That's what Castiel told me yesterday." Dean began, "That you two and Michael were hitting it off, and that Michael is hearing nothing but positive things from Frank about you."
Sam was actually shocked, "Frank said nice things about me?" he asked, now not as concerned about Lucifer.
Dean chuckled, "Some times I feel like you might over think things… Just a little bit." Dean gave Sam a reassuring pat on the arm, just as his phone chirped again.
Dean quickly checked his phone, reading over his new text.
Oh my God, that sounds awful. Of course, you and Sam are welcome over, just tell me where you want me to come pick you up and I'll be there.
Dean grinned, delighted, then tucked his phone away into a pocket, "Pack a bag, Sammy, we're gonna have ourselves a good old-fashioned play date."
Sam was unsettled by the phrasing, but trudged upstairs none the less, much less enthused than Dean, "I think I'd rather sit here in the cold dark."
Castiel was sure that his heart was pounding out of his chest when he read the words Hey Cas, I know this is sudden, but was quickly calmed by the rest of the message. He had no idea this storm was going to get out of control as it had, but was more than willing to drive down into the neighborhood Dean specified to pick them up for the day. He'd actually never been down into this neighborhood. Though he did know it had some of the oldest houses in New Heaven in it, though over the past decade, many of them have been torn down and rebuilt. He wondered if that was the case with Dean's family home.
Once he approached the four way turn Dean had specified, Castiel realized he could actually see the downed pole in the road, with the big bulky wires laying strewn about. With the road being slick, it was definitely not safe for anyone to be walking around. He hoped Sam and Dean weren't going to try and tip toe their way out of their front yard, over the wires in the road to get to him.
But just as he was wondering how'd they'd escape, there was a tapping on his window.
He gasped, quickly looking to the window in surprise. Dean waved at Castiel and was then quickly running around to the other side, prompting Castiel to unlock the doors. Sam was slipping in the back driver's side seat, while Dean took shotgun.
They both gave chilled, exhausted sighs, teeth chattering, and bodies damp. "Hey, Castiel." Sam greeted, then followed by Dean, "Thanks again, Cas. We woulda been going nuts in that house with no power."
Castiel grinned at Dean, "It's no problem. I hope you weren't waiting too long." He told them as he began to turn around and head back home.
Dean chuckled, "No, actually, we had just gotten underneath that big tree there by the intersection when you pulled up."
Castiel hadn't even realized they'd both been standing under the tree just to his left. "You two blend into the scenery too easily. You spooked me when you tapped on my window."
Dean grinned even wider, "I noticed."
It seemed Castiel was the only one who noticed the slightly sultry tone to Dean's voice in his response, making him sheepishly glance over, not actually moving his face, then saw how Dean was very directly looking at him, making his eyes divert back to the road, a hard blush on is cheeks now.
A detail he hoped Dean wouldn't notice.
If it weren't for the harsh rain, Castiel would have been tempted to speed up, trying to make this trip to the house shorter, unable to control his facial expressions like this with Dean so close, and being unable hide his face from him.
Castiel realized how much that made him seem like a shy high schooler again. Which in turn made him blush even harder. He decided he was just going to focus solely on the road. And not Dean's immense grin.
