There was a break room/kitchenette in Perry's office. He went in there, one afternoon. Della was sitting at the table, eating a sandwich. She had taken her shoes off, under the table.
"Hi, Della."
"Hi, Chief. Getting lunch?"
"Just some coffee."
"Just coffee?"
"It keeps me going."
She shook her head. "Chief, you need a good meal! You probably haven't eaten since breakfast, did you?"
"No, I haven't," he conceded.
"Here, let me make something for you. It's quick, but filling."
She got up—in stocking feet!"
He smiled. "Uncomfortable shoes!"
"Oh, Chief, I'm so sorry! I like to walk barefooted, at home."
"That's OK, Della. This is your 2nd home; you can do that here!"
"Thanks, Chief!"
She put her plate in the sink and ran water over it. Then she made the sandwich, using this recipe:
GRILLED CHEESE SANDWHICH
2 slices bread
1-2 slices cheese (cheddar is best, but any others are fine)
1 slice tomato (optional)
Butter
Preheat oven not 400 degrees. Pu the cheese and tomato between the bread slices. Butter the tops of the bread. Put the sandwich in the over and watch closely. The top should be nicely browned, but not black. When this occurs, take out and put back in on the other side. This side should also be nicely brown, but not black. Take out and enjoy!
He brewed his coffee, while she made the sandwich.
"Want some coffee?"
"No thanks, Chief; I've already had some."
Five minutes later, the sandwich was ready. She gave it to him on a plate, and he dug in.
"Mm, this is wonderful! The cheese has a nice smokey flavor."
"Smoked cheddar. Not easy to find, but well worth it."
"Thank you, Della; this hit the spot."
"You're welcome, Chief."
"Pretty good, for a barefoot chef!"
She smiled. "Thanks!"
