Chapter 1
Lily POV
Today's my first time helping get muggle-borns acquainted with the magical world. I took over the job from my mentor Professor McGonagall since she has a ton of work for the start of term. My husband of nearly 11 years now and my 11-year-old son (his birthday was a couple of weeks ago) were accompanying me. We only had one more muggle-born girl to visit. Her name, Alexina Cain, rang bells in my mind, like I should know it. She figured it would come to her in time. The entrance to Hyde Park is where her letter said that she'd be waiting at 9 am.
Suddenly, a girl with purple hair stiffened slightly and turned around. The three of us - Harry, James and I - had to stifle gasps as we took in her appearance. Alexina Cain had looked half starved, half exhausted with a jumpy air about her. She was at least a head shorter than the average 11 to 12- year-old, a small, slip of a girl made of cutting angles from jutting bones sticking out from under tightly stretched skin. Her shabby, threadbare clothes did little to hide how pale and gaunt she looked. The girl looked at them with something akin to recognition in her eyes.
"Hello" The girl spoke "you must be the people from the school"
"Yes, that's us" James started "you must be Alexina Cain?" the girl - Alexina - nodded and stated"you can call me Alex" and then motioned for us to follow her. We followed her to what looked like a playground but there we no children here. "We should be able to talk here, without any repercussions," she said. There was something familiar about her voice but I couldn't put my finger on it. Apparently, Harry wasn't having the same problem. "You're that girl!" Alex just looked amused "I am a girl, yes." Harry's face flushed a little, and James and I couldn't help but chuckle. "That's not what I meant! You're the girl that saved us a couple of years ago!" she smiled. "So you are Harry, I had a feeling but didn't want to say. Now should we get on with it? I don't have much time"
James and I exchanged a confused look. He voiced our thoughts: "Why? Do you need to get home or something? And where are your parents?" he added as an afterthought. "I don't have to get home, exactly but I do need to go to a meeting and no I will not reveal where. Also, my parents are more than happy to let me handle this as they have to work" We weren't completely convinced but we let it slide.
"So pressing things first. My family is very poor and we can't afford to pay thousands of dollars to go to this school" James answered before I could "No worries, Hogwarts has a muggleborn fund for students who need financial aid." Alex let out a barely audible sigh of relief before she continued "The letter mentioned something about Diagon Alley?" This time it was Harry who answered and I was wondering why I was even here. "It's this amazing street with magical shops that sell everything! There's a huge quidditch shop right next to Magical Menagerie!"
"Whats quidditch?" Alex interrupted, Harry's jaw dropped. "It's only the best game in the entire world! You play on broomsticks and your try and score points by.." I stopped him before he went on a rant. "I'm sure you guys can talk about this when you are on the train, but for now, Diagon Alley is a wizard shopping district that is accessed through a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. We can go there today to buy your supplies if you'd like"
"No worries, I wouldn't want to take up more of your time, If you could just tell me where to go, I will be able to make it on my own."
