After we finished eating, we all parted ways to our rooms to sleep. Godric was dead to the world, looking far too peaceful. I stripped down to my t-shirt and underwear, crawling into bed with him. To my surprise, he stirred. His green eyes opened groggily.
"You've been gone a while," he mumbled, drawing me close to him. I pulled myself as close to him as I could.
"I was with Sookie, Jason, Bahari, and Nahla. Lafayette's coven is on board with us," I said, feeling his cool skin against my face. If he were alive, I'd be hearing his heartbeat. But he's dead. Just like we're all about to be. He propped himself up on his elbow, feeling my nervousness and apprehension.
He stroked my hair with his other hand. "You're worried."
"Aren't you?"
"In a way. Though I think that's mostly you." He kissed me before I could protest. After all of these years, I'm still amazed by the amount of love he's able to put into one kiss.
"Promise me you won't die tomorrow," I said softly, stroking the side of his face.
"Only if you promise the same."
I kissed him, just wanting to be with him as much as I could before tonight. I don't know what I'd do if I lost him.
I fell into a fitful sleep until Godric pulled me out of it. "It's time," he said simply. I nodded, more energized than I actually was. I put on a pair of black ripped skinny jeans, black combat boots, a band t-shirt, and a leather jacket. We're as ready as we can be. I pulled my energy to the center as much as I could. Godric took my hand, nodding. This was it. There wasn't going to be another chance.
We walked in silence to the cafeteria. Everyone in the facility would be in it, waiting.
"Ready?" I nodded. I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
Godric opened the door for me, I stood up straighter, holding my head high. There were cheers as we entered the room. Godric and Alcide helped me stand on one of the tables.
"Tonight is the night we've been training so hard for," I spoke over the applause and hollering. They quieted down. "Tonight, we fight for freedom. We fight for our rights to exist in this realm. We fight for the existence of all supes-faeries, vamps, weres. We're all the same. Tonight we fight for us-for each other. We fight for those who oppose us and we fight for those too weak to fight with us." The weres howled, eyes glowing amber. My eyes flashed in response. "We fight for those who are different and don't belong. After tonight, we will all belong. Let's show this Queen of Light and those swayed by her false promises that we won't go quietly."
More cheering, more applause. My adrenaline was pumping. I was ready. And, judging by the energy in the air, so were they.
And then we were on our way. "Good speech," Bahari complimented me as he and Nahla went ahead. I nodded. The fae among us were beginning to look less human. More alien. Everyone was out for blood.
It didn't take long for us to get to the graveyard. There were more people here than I had thought, but less than I had hoped. I hope it's enough.
A portal opened in the clearing. Fae began to pour through. I recognized Maab immediately.
She stood in the center, in front of her army. I stepped out to meet her.
"Too bad you aren't my daughter. I could use your tenacity. It's wasted on Kaelin," she said, looking down at me in a mixture of approval and disapproval.
"I'm Jackson Herveaux's daughter. I always have been," I corrected with a low growl, my eyes flashing amber in warning.
"I hope they're worth dying for."
She flew backwards through the air, raising her hands. Lightning struck near me. I evaded it with little effort. There was a cacophony of screams as both sides ran into battle. The witches on Maab's side conjured a mist, making it hard for us to see. The weres and shifters would have no trouble.
I began searching for Maab. She's my fight. One of her witches lunged at me, wielding an iron dagger. It cut my arm but didn't harm me otherwise. I growled, using the mist to freeze her in place. I had no desire to make any other casualties. Just Maab. And Compton, if I could find him.
"Eric!" I heard Sookie scream. "Bill, let him go." I followed her screams. Bill was trying to overpower Eric. He couldn't. Eric grinned, fangs bared, laughing. In seconds, Eric had him pinned. He looked at Sookie for confirmation. She hesitated. A witch went for the kill on Eric. I knocked her away with a stream of water. She was tied to a tree as it turned to ice.
Sookie drove a stake into Bill's heart, causing him to explode all over her and Eric.
I continued looking through the mist. Godric, Salome, and Isabel were driving back some fae from our own witches, who were mostly healers. Jesus, Lafayette's boyfriend, was assisting with his brujo magick. We might win.
Debbie and Alcide put down a baby vamp on the opposing side. Debbie spit the blood out of her mouth, letting out a howl.
A flash in the sky. Maab.
I reached out with my mind, causing the air to freeze around her. I brought her to the ground. Kaelin was at my side. I could feel the power radiating off of him. It fed my own energy. Maab stood, looking at us smugly. She threw lightning at us. Kaelin and I dodged it, throwing shards of ice. She dodged it easily.
Two of her minions came to her assistance. Kaelin and I carefully incapacitated them. A small bolt of lightning cut my cheek. Maab cackled, throwing more. Michael appeared at my side, shielding me with his wings. He handed me his sword, fixing me with a stare. I nodded, taking off into a sprint as fast as I could. He flew at my side before grabbing me, doing a loop, and then throwing me at Maab.
Michael's sword sank into her chest. She looked up at me, surprised, as the life left her eyes. I wasted no time, slicing open every artery location I could remember with the iron knife in my pocket. She began to bleed out, turning to ash.
It's over.
And then there was a pain in my chest. I looked down. A hand was holding my heart in front of me. A man's hand. He pulled his hand back through my chest. I fell to my knees. No.
"So nice of you to do all the work for me," Russell Edgington purred. I could hear him bite into my heart. The world started to slip away as I fell forward.
"Godric," I breathed, my body going still.
