Chapter 20: Surprise Mutha-Fl #$%!
With the sun of the great outdoors blearing down on Axel's face like a hellish spotlight, the Chocobo started to break into a sweat. Who's brilliant idea was it to have this competition outside with mats placed down over the field's grass on a Summer's day? An idiots idea, that's who. Now the red head was going to look like a mess... Looks weren't the only thing he was freaking out about though...
"Cho-co-bos! Cho-co-bos! Cho-co-bos! WHOOOO!"
Axel didn't exactly know who began the chanting, he was going to thank whoever started it later fiercely. If the team had stepped out onto the stage without the chanting he would have been feeling even more nervous. Axel had clearly underestimated how difficult it was to perform in front of a large audience... Now that he had the support from said audience (who were roaring and buzzing from the Dragon's routine), having all three-hundred eyes fixated on him wasn't so daunting... Maybe...
Okay, slight lie... Axel was fucking scared.
His 'scaredness' however didn't stop him from tapping the microphone set up the front a couple times with his finger to see if it was working. It also did not stopping him from clearing his throat and speaking into that microphone. Damn Kairi for making him introduce their routine... And he had to sing by himself first too- fucking dammit!
No. He wasn't going to pussy out. He and Riku were about to pour their heart and souls into this performance... The lyrics after all had come from their own emotions.
With his team frozen in their starting poses, Axel spoke to the crowd. "Ah, hey guys!" He broke into a small crooked smile, needless to say the crowd went nuts again.
This was a major confidence booster. The red head locked eyes with Roxas for a second, then smiled even wider. "Well, our performance today is two original songs mashed together. These songs were written by Riku and I-" He gestured to the silverette who was behind him. His friend went slightly pink hearing a 'GO RIKU!' which had been an excited Sora from the crowd. Axel chuckled lightly into the mic then finally said "-and we hope you like them!"
Don't screw up. Don't screw up! DON'T SCREW UP!
The backing track began playing, and Axel took hold of the microphone stand with two hands. I can DO this. I can DO THIS. Annnnnd there was his cue to start singing:
"Here I am waiting
I'll have to leave soon...
Why am I holding on?"
Axel could not STAND the silence of the audience. I suck don't I? When will the tomatoes be thrown? He kept signing though, there was no way he could stop now.
"We knew this day would come
We knew it all along
How did it come so fast?"
Axel closed his eyes and braced himself for the worst over his singing. He was doing it just how he'd rehearsed it...
"WOOOOOO!"
The loud noise of the audience erupting made him open his eyes again, and sure enough, most of them were clapping loudly and cheering like cheerleaders generally do. HELL YEAH! The Chocobos were all moving about now, throwing each other up in timed precision... But the real show hadn't begun yet... Hell... It hadn't even started.
Axel took the microphone off the stand then took two steps backwards, getting ready for the bridge. Kairi and Yuffie stepped forward too so they were flanking him, then all three started dancing, Axel wasn't doing too bad with microphone in hand...
"This is our last night... But it's late...
And I'm trying not to sleep."
They stopped dancing, all the Chocobos going into a frozen position where they were. Only Axel's head was up, staring out over the crowd. Let me tell you, the whole audience got goosebumps by this stage, especially a certain blonde boy in the back row...
"Cause I know, when I wake, I will have to slip away,"
The music flared up once more, and all the Chocobos went straight to action, tossing three girls up at the same time then catching them all again. Teens were tumbling, rolling, diving everywhere. It really was spectacular.
"WOOOHOOO!" The crowd went wild!
"And when the daylight comes I'll have to go,
But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close!
Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own,
But tonight I need to hold you so close!"
Roxas was literally clutching at Terra's hand so tight the brunette had to shove him off before he lost circulation. Roxas then opted for holding onto his seat, his knuckles turning an unhealthy shade of white. His tongue darted out of his mouth to moisten his dry lips.
"Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh..."
Axel turned his eyes up to his boyfriend, then gave a small yet noticeable wink... Roxas almost started crying, knowing all the meaning underneath everything. The red head lowered his mic, letting out some heavy breaths as they continued to intensely stare into each other's eyes, the audience going WILD. Then the music slowed down a bit... There was another voice echoing out of the speakers:
"It's a beautiful night,
We're looking for something dumb to do...
Hey baby!-"
Riku came out of nowhere, joining Axel at centre stage. He had his own microphone in hand (a very sweaty hand), and was trying the hardest he possibly could to not turn bright red. Red didn't suit him. Red was not one of his colors.
Axel stepped back as they'd practiced, placing his mic on the ground before doing a back handspring and landing gracefully on two feet. Not having Axel there did not help Riku at all, now all eyes were on him. He just closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then sang the next words out loud and clear:
"I think I wanna marry you..."
Sora started clutching the bleacher as hard as Roxas, maybe even a little harder. Demyx was squealing and Zack didn't know where to look- At Sora or Riku? He opted for looking between them, like a tennis match.
"Is it the look in your eyes,
Or is it this dancing juice?"
Gaining confidence as Axel had earlier, Riku opened his eyes and they landed right on Sora who was conveniently placed in the first row... God... They had to be eye level or something... Seeing the look in his boyfriends eyes, he most certainly could not chicken out of this dare now! (See chapter: 10) And this really was the way he felt about him... He loved Sora so much that he really wouldn't be able to deal with not spending the rest of his life with him.
"Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you...!"
As the music picked up again, Riku let out a small exhilarated laugh then began strutting around the front of the stage, weaving in and out of his team mates as they flipped and danced. Man... This is SO MUCH FUN!
"Well I know this little chapel on the boulevard we can go oh oh oh-
No one will know oh oh oh,
Oh, come on, boy!"
Riku jogged around, sometimes joining in the dancing and sometimes just stopping to sing out to the crowd. He wouldn't mind be a rockstar if everyone went nuts this much all the time...
"Who cares if we're trashed got a pocket full of cash we can blow oh oh oh,
Shots of patron,
And it's on, boy!"
He pointed straight at Sora on that last line and the brunette went nuts, he stood up and screamed something along the lines of 'I LOVE YOU RRIIIUUKKUU!' Demyx stood up, then Zack, then the whole of the Dragon's. After they were all up all the other teams were on their feet, cheering as loud as their lungs would allow.
Axel grinned his biggest grin ever, then from his position did a front hand-spring, picking up his mic in the process and landed upright right next to Riku. The friends paused to chuckle at each other, then jumped forward to start the chorus with a BANG!
"Don't say no, no, no, no-no;
Just say yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah!
And we'll go, go, go, go-go.
If you're ready, like I'm ready!"
They clapped their hands and jumped around singing together with pure adrenaline pulsing hot through their veins. The audience clapped along with them, Sora still torn between crying his eyes out and screaming his head off.
"Cause it's a beautiful night!
We're looking for something dumb to do!

Believe it or not Kairi herself was actually smiling. The Chocobo's all swayed their hips smoothly then split up, all of them jogging to two separate sides of the stage leaving only Axel and Riku up front and centre.
"Is it the look in your eyes,
Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you."
It was now Riku's turn to drop his microphone and retreat to the back of the stage, all eyes on Axel now. The music changed back to the drum and guitar of the red heads song, and he stepped forward smiling a big wolfish grin out to Roxas.
"Here I am staring at your perfection
In my arms, so beautiful..."
Roxas clutched the seat tighter.
"The sky is getting bright, the stars are burning out...
Somebody slow it down..."
Roxas clutched the seat even tighter.
The cheerleaders behind Axel began moving around. Kairi, on one side, was now wearing a massive, obnoxious red wig. The Chocobo's were still split into two, with three girls on each side being held up like towers, one side was red-Kairi, and on the other was Yuffie, in a shortened styled blonde wig. One of their team mates stood off to the side, holding up a long stick with a moon on a piece of string attached to the end.
I think we know where this is going. Well, at least Roxas did because he was stunned. Completely speechless and transfixed on his Boyfriend.
"This is way too hard, cause I know,
When the sun comes up, I will leave..."
Axel stayed up the front as the two 'Roxas' and 'Axel' sides of the stage danced around, the characters looking at each other longingly, reaching out to one another, then being pulled back by their 'teams'.
"This is my last glance that will soon be memory..."
All of the Leopards looked between the fake Roxas on stage then back at their own Roxas, then back again. And again. And again. Then finally they had a brainwave seeing the look of pure love in the real Roxas's eyes.
Marluxia was the first one to scream. "AXEL YOU FUCKER!"
"And when the daylight comes I'll have to go-
But tonight I'm gonna hold you so close
Cause in the daylight we'll be on our own
But tonight I need to hold you so close!"
No one heard the cry of rage though, everyone was too fixated on the way Kairi/Axel danced over to Yuffie/Roxas and embraced Him/Her, then 'Axel' picked 'Roxas' up and swung him around a few times, before setting 'Roxas' down on his feet, holding him close to his chest.
"Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!"
A cheerleader walked on from offstage with a large sign reading: 'KISS!', and ran over to Kairi and Yuffie just as they leaned in and shielded the view from the audience who all laughed their heads off. Then the sign girl ran off, leaving Kairi and Yuffie hugging in the middle of the stage as everyone danced around them.
Axel chanced a look up at Roxas, only to see him laughing hysterically with little tears in his eyes. Terra was also laughing, but Marluxia... Whoa... The guy needed to calm down... Vanitas looked amused though, enjoying Marluxia's inner turmoil.
"I never want it to stop
Because I don't wanna start all over...
Start all over..."
Kairi and Yuffie were now waltzing around the stage, which was Axel's metaphor he'd come up with for the nights spent out at the lake. He really let his soul come out on the next few lyrics, because when it came down to it, this- was what he'd been feeling for the past month.
"I was afraid of the dark
But now it's all that I want...
All that I want... All that I want!"
He made a point to lock eyes with Roxas, who was crying, just to have this moment with him. This moment where they weren't hiding in the night, this moment where everyone could see them, and to let him know it was okay. You shouldn't have to hide love right? The blonde let out a breathy laugh, and smiled back, water streaming right down his face and shinning in his eyes.
In that moment- that look shared between the two, Marluxia shut up. Even he wasn't blind to true love.
Everyone erupted into applause as the cheerleaders sprang about again.
"And when the daylight comes I'll have to go...!

But tonight I need to hold you so close!"
Axel belted out the last lines using as much deep-down passion as he could manage. Then the sides of their team joined again into one mass in the centre, with Kairi and Yuffie in the middle, still wearing their wigs and holding hands tightly. As the music changed once more, they ripped the wigs off, then the circle all cart-wheeled outwards like a big flower blooming. Riku, of course, was at the centre of this circle, mic ready in hand!
"I'll go get a ring let the choir bells sing like oooh,
So what you wanna do?
Let's just run boy!"
He walked outwards, working the crowd and putting smooth-moves in here and there. Axel had to admire him, for a guy against public declarations of love Riku was doing rather well!
"If we wake up and you wanna break up that's cool..."
Riku shrugged at this line, placing big, round, puppy-dog eyes on Sora who giggled loudly and latched his hands onto Demyx's forearm and squeezed. Axel thought he'd never see the day where Riku would use puppy-dog-eyes... They hadn't rehearsed that... Oh well, the red head had to focus on Kairi right now and not accidentally dropping her when she three meters high off the ground...
"No, I won't blame you;
It was fun, boy!"
That was his cue! Axel placed Kairi down, leapt forward, grabbed his mic again then joined his friend up front and centre! Kairi and the others whirled all around them, pulling the splits and whatnot... It really was a beautiful, frilly, cheerleadery, orange-soaked performance!

And we'll go, go, go, go-go.
If you're ready, like I'm ready!"
Riku and Axel went back to back then spun around a few times. Hell, having this much fun was tiring! Axel didn't think he was this unfit! Nah, he'll blame it on the adrenaline later! The crowd was still up dancing around with Sora and Roxas screaming probably louder then the whole audience combined but do they look like they care? No? EXACTLY! BECAUSE THE PLACE WAS ROCKIN'!
"Cause it's a beautiful night!

With their lungs screaming at them, the two friends onstage split with Riku slowly walking forward, his eyes trained on Sora like his life depended on it (and the brunette's eyes trained on him). Axel gazed at Roxas too from his position onstage, his heart racing uncontrollably from the depth of his glistening blue eyes. The Chocobo's sung their hearts out now, staring at their Loves.
"Just say I doooooo-ooo uhu,
Tell me right now baby!"
Riku made it over to Sora and started begging, the Dragon turned bright red with everyone now looking at them. Demyx let out a squeal beside him, but Sora himself couldn't talk, his voice caught in his throat.
"Tell me right now baby, baby..."
Meanwhile Axel was on stage with the rest of the Chocobo's, singing some background music from his song and dancing. He didn't let his eyes drop from Roxas, and as they continued to stare at each other, the crowd disappeared, the roars disappeared, the cat-calls disappeared... They could only see each other, just like how they'd only seen each other for the past year.
"Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh...
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (yeah)
Oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa (yeah), oh-whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-"
All the music stopped, Axel dropped the mic from his lips letting his chest rise and fall heavily as his lungs breathed in oxygen like they never had before. He smiled at Roxas once more, before turning his attention back to his best friend who was just about to take the plunge of a lifetime.
The silverette gulped down the massive lump in his throat.
"...I think I want to marry you." Was all Riku spoke into his microphone. He lowered it slowly, gauging the reaction from his boyfriend... Looking at Sora with his whole heart on the line he took hold of his hand, picking a small silver diamond ring out of his pocket.
Finally: Riku got down on one knee.

ICE CREAM FOR EVERYONE... Ohh... And *ahem*... It's now TWO more chapters after this XD I've just decided haha. MAN, I've had this performance in my mind from day ONE of writing this baby... Sorry if you didn't like this whole chapter just being lyrics and dancing! It had to be done! =) Don't worry! The next chap will make up for it!
