Samples

Matthew heard the lab door open and smiled at the stealth of his visitor. Miriam had left for the evening and he'd opted to stay late analyzing the results from a pre eleventh century witches. His nose caught two scents, definitely Kindred, but did not know who his visitors were.

"Who are you?" he asked not turning around.

"I'm the Prince of Maine," came the answer. "Where do you want these?"

"Those the samples I asked for?"

"Yes."

"On the side table." He turned watching them put the specially designed cooler on the table. "I was expecting Julian Luna."

The tall man with red hair with a streak of white around his head, dressed like a college professor crossed his arms over his broad chest. "He sends his apologies. I was headed to Oxford to do a guest lecture, so I volunteered to bring the samples."

His other visitor stood slightly back with a shock of white hair. He wore jeans and a red shirt. Being familiar with warriors, Matthew had not doubt the other had a military background and was probably the prince's body guard.

"I'm familiar with your work," the prince continued. "I'd be curious to see the results."

"And you are?"

The prince smiled. "Dr. Benton Quest. This is Race Bannon."

"I'm familiar with your reputation." One of the most brilliant world scientists, holding patents to many new innovations that could change the world. Not to mention Quest Enterprises had made his guest extremely rich.

The scientist's fingers lightly touched the cooler. "You have my DNA, Race's and Marari's. She's my future wife."

"Kindred?"

Dr. Quest nodded. "I sired her."

"With us that would be considered incest. She'd be your daughter."

"Not with us." His face shadowed. "I had no choice."

"The only way to silence her?" Kindred had strict rules about what to do if a human found out about them.

The prince shook his head. "She already knew about us."

"I'd like to hear the whole story." He got comfortable in his chair and waited.

With a sigh, Benton Quest pulled out a chair and sat down. "She'd gone to see her cousin who is our president and lost control of her car due to winter conditions. We found her in a cave almost frozen." He glanced away. "She wouldn't have survived long enough to get her to the hospital."

"She asked," Race Bannon interjected.

"He sired you as well." Matthew knew it had to be the case. The two men had a close bond. He could sense it.

The body guard nodded. "I asked too." He glanced at his wrist. "We need to get moving, Doc."

"I know." Dr. Quest got to his feet. "When you get the results, we'd like to be notified."

"I will," Matthew promised. He watched as the two Kindred left. When they'd gone, he smiled. This was the first step in cataloguing all the vampire species. It had taken months of negotiations and pushing through prejudices to get the samples.

What Matthew hoped, is that it might help with the species decline they'd noted among the witches, daemons and vampires. Seemed the Kindred could still sire with no issues. He wanted to know why. How were they different?

Placing the samples where he could examine them later, he stretched and headed out. He planned to stop for a glass of wine and have a chat with his son Marcus before he went on shift at the hospital. Miriam would find the samples in the morning and they'd work on them together.

He had to wonder why Dr. Quest wanted to know the results and suspected it had to do with his future wife. It stunned Matthew how the Kindred viewed those they sired. One major cultural difference between vampires and the Kindred.

Maybe the samples would reveal more. Matthew couldn't wait to find out.

OOOOOOOO

This is a weird side story that bounced into my head while watching Discovery of Witches.
