Episode 1 Part 3 Chrysalis
Max's P.O.V:
After we sped away from Blackwell Academy, narrowly escaping Nathan's anger in the parking lot, thanks to Warren stepping in to take the beating for me. It had been such a fucked up day as is, and now after taking a good look at her, the girl I saved from being shot in the bathroom was none other than my best friend from five years ago, Chloe Price.
I sat quietly in the passenger's seat of Chloe's beat up truck just looking out the window as the sun was setting and leaves were still falling from the trees, I watched as we passed by several different buildings and houses.
The drive was relatively quiet with Chloe focusing on the road. I took a deep breath before finally speaking, "Man, Nathan Prescott is messed up. And dangerous," I said, "This day never ends."
Chloe's face hardened with annoyance when I said that, "Oh, and thanks Chloe," she said, clearly not liking the fact that I didn't thank her for getting me out of that mess with Nathan. There was an awkward dead silence, as I wasn't expecting her to respond to me like that. Before I could speak, she continued, "After five years you're still Max Caulfield," I still couldn't find the words to say to her. There was still an awkward feeling in the car. I could tell Chloe wasn't happy with me for not keeping in touch with her the past five years. She looked over at me, and I was really feeling guilty, and it was written all over my face, "Don't give me that guilty face. At least pretend you're happy to see me."
I was a bit offended that Chloe didn't think I was happy to see her, and I finally found my voice, "I am so glad to see you," I said honestly, "And thanks, Chloe. It makes perfect sense that I'd see you today."
Chloe seemed to settle down a bit as she continued to focus on the road, "Yes, it's been that kind of day," she said before looking out the window before looking back in my direction, "So what did that freak want with you, anyway?"
I looked over at Chloe, "I really don't know," I said honestly, "Hopefully nothing after today," there was a brief silence, but my curiosity got the better of me, "So, how do you know Nathan?"
"He's just another Arcadia asshole," Chloe said, "Your friend really took a beating for you."
When Chloe mentioned that, I felt a bit guilty for leaving poor Warren to get beat up by him, "Warren, yeah I owe him big time," I said.
"You're not the only one in debt," Chloe stated, "And you're already causing trouble."
"I thought it would be quiet here," I said, feeling a bit disappointed in the way things were going, "It feels so weird to be back."
"So I guess Seattle sucked hard?" Chloe asked me
I had mixed feelings about Seattle, and while I did make a couple of friends there, it wasn't home, "Seattle was alright," was all I could say.
"So you came back to a hick town like Arcadia Bay?" Chloe asked, "You must be sick of it already."
"Not after seeing you," I quickly said.
Chloe gave me that look like she didn't believe my last statement, "Oh, please," she said, "You came back for Blackwell Academy, not me," I was about to argue, but she didn't give me the chance, "And don't tell me otherwise. School's been in session for a month and you didn't even bother calling me to let me know you were back."
I felt hurt about what Chloe was saying to me. Sure, I didn't contact her for five years, and failed to contact her when I returned home, but geez, "I just wanted to settle back in first," I finally said.
"Max, I'm sure you don't use lame excuses on Mr. Jefferson, so don't use them on me," Chloe said.
There was more awkward silence between the two of us. I could tell Chloe wasn't in the mood at the moment. Then I heard a weird broken sound coming from my back. I opened my bag and grabbed my Polaroid camera and saw that it had been broken from the altercation with Nathan, "Man, are you serial?" I asked.
Chloe looked over at me funny, "Man, I haven't heard that one in awhile," she said.
"Not everything changes," I said, "Except my camera has officially taken a shit."
"My step-douche has a ton of tools at my place," Chloe said, "I'm sure you'll be able to fix it there."
"I need special tiny tools to fix this," I said.
"Well, my step-dick's garage is stacked with different tools," Chloe said, "And he is a tiny tool."
I couldn't help but chuckle a little at Chloe. She seemed to be calming down a bit.
We finally pulled up to a house I was very familiar with, and it seemed to be frozen in time from the outside, as the paint job William had started before he died hadn't been finished by Chloe's stepfather, "Welcome home, Max," she said.
Chloe stopped the truck and I unbuckled my seat belt before grabbing my bag and opening the door to get out of the truck, while Chloe was getting out on the other side. My curiosity had gotten the better of me, and I decided to look three houses down from Chloe's to see if anyone had bought the house I had been living in. I didn't see any parked cars in the driveway of my old house. I decided not to keep Chloe waiting, so I followed her into the house, making a mental note to come back and get a closer look at my old house.
Me and Chloe entered her room, and it looked different from when I was there last. There were boxes and clothes everywhere, "My room looks different from the last time you were here," Chloe said.
"It's alright," I said, "At least we can chill out."
"This really isn't my chill out zone," Chloe said, "My step-ass makes sure of that. Come in, close the door." I walked further into the room and shut the door behind me,. Chloe pulled out a joint and began smoking, "Put on some music while I medicate."
I began navigating Chloe's labyrinth of a room. I found the power strip and flipped that on. I saw the TV that used to be in the living room, but that wasn't the focus at the moment. I walked towards the closet and while moving a box, I dropped Chloe's snow dome, which upset her. I raised my hand and rewound and watched as the snow dome repaired itself and jumped back to its previous spot.
I made my way over to Chloe's computer and saw a few Rachel Amber posters, 'So she's the one posting those posters,' I thought to myself, 'I better make a note to ask her about it later.'
I went back to finding a CD to put into the boom box. As I was searching, I found a postcard from Rachel Amber, some photos of Chloe and her dad, some drawings we drew as a kid and some old furniture we painted blue.
After a bit more digging, I finally found the CD case with a disc. But once I took the disc out of its case, I spotted a photo of Chloe with Rachel Amber. I felt a pang of jealousy, as it felt like she was Chloe's new best friend. But at the same time, I really had no right to be jealous. I didn't keep in contact after I had moved to Seattle with my family five years ago. Not only that, I didn't take the time to contact her when I first moved back at the start of the school year.
I was jolted out of my thoughts when felt the photo being snatched out of my hands, "Hey give me that!" Chloe snapped.
I was a bit shocked, and I had to regain my composure from the sudden outburst, "Um, sorry, I wasn't trying to be nosy," I responded calmly before taking a deep breath, "Obviously she was a good friend."
Chloe calmed down a bit, "That's putting it mildly," she said quietly.
There was an awkward silence again. I got up from the floor and sat down next to Chloe on the bed. Then I realized who that other girl was in that photo, "That's Rachel Amber," I said, "I saw her missing person posters all over campus today."
Chloe looked at me, "Yeah, I put them up last Thursday," she said, "I had some help from someone, which made it easier."
Max was curious as to who helped Chloe put up the posters, but more importantly, she didn't even realize they were up until today, 'How the hell did I not notice those posters until today?' I thought to myself.
"Rachel was my angel," Chloe continued, "After my dad died and you moved I felt abandoned. Rachel saved my life."
I felt even more guilty when Chloe said this, "Man, I had no idea," I said.
"Well, you never bothered to make an effort to find out," Chloe said with bitterness in her tone, "I was fourteen, and best friends."
Chloe continued to tell me more about her and Rachel's plans to leave Arcadia Bay and how she just suddenly disappeared after meeting someone that changed her life. Chloe was starting to get uncomfortable talking about Rachel, and had asked me to put on some music.
I stood up and Chloe sat on her bed with a depressed look on her face with her left hand against the side of her face. I made my way towards the stereo and put the CD into the machine before turning it on. The room filled with music, draining some of the awkward silence. Chloe relaxed before laying down on her bed and continued smoking her joint. She looked at me and spoke for the first time in what seemed like an hour, "Anyway, you can find tools to fix your camera in the garage," she said.
I looked over at Chloe, and I was very concerned about her, "Chloe, are you okay?" I asked.
"Sure, I'm awesome," Chloe said in a sarcastic tone, "I just want to blaze and be alone for a moment."
I was about to protest, but something told me to let Chloe calm down. I left the room and shut the door behind me. Once I was out of her room, my curiosity had gotten the best of me. I went into both Joyce and her husband's room before looking around. I saw that she was married to someone that looked like a cop, and that they were behind on their bills. I saw that Joyce had kept some of William's things, which was nice. I looked out the window and saw an injured bird. I rewound, opened the window to save the poor thing.
After saving the bird, I decided not to look further, and left the room. I was very tempted to go up to the attic to see what was left up there, but decided against it.
I decided to go downstairs to the garage next. Upon entering the living room, I came across some photos of a younger Chloe when she was much happier. There were more past due bills, but I paid them no mind. I saw the old couch that me and Chloe used to play on and pretend was a pirate ship. It definitely had seen better days, as it looked like it belonged in a junkyard.
Then I went to go to the garage, but the door was locked. I decided to find another way into the garage, and that's when I saw a recent photo of Joyce still working at Two Whales, 'I need to see Joyce again,' I thought to myself, 'And get my hands on one of the best damn burgers in town.'
I finally made my way into the garage and began looking around. Again, my curiosity had gotten the better of me. I saw that there was some survival food, a gun rack with one of the guns missing, and most of all, I turned on a monitor, which showed cameras throughout the house. This pissed me off. Then I saw files that had pictures of Kate Marsh, and a map of Blackwell. There was a photo ID of David Madsen, 'No way,' I thought to myself, 'The head of Blackwell security is Chloe's stepdad?'
I found the tools, but they were out of reach. I slid a piece of cardboard underneath the stand and turned on the washing machine and let the tools fall down. I shut the machine off and retrieved the tools to fix my camera. I was just about to leave the garage, but I saw that I forgot to put the files back where I got them. Instead, I grabbed the files, put them into my bag and left the garage before heading back up to Chloe's room.
I unlocked the other door to the garage before walking back into the living room before making my way to the stairs before climbing them. I didn't hear the music I had turned on earlier before Chloe asked me to step out. I reentered the room and Chloe seemed much more calm, "Cool, you found the tools," she said, "You can sit at my desk and fix your camera."
I went to the desk, sat down and got to work on my camera. I was doing all I could, and was getting really irritated with not being able to fix my camera, 'I really don't want to have to leave the analog age behind,' I thought to myself as I continued trying to fix the camera.
I was so caught up in what I was doing that I didn't realize Chloe had gotten up and walked over to me, "So, how's it coming?" she asked me.
I let out a long sigh of defeat, "I can't fix this thing," I said, a little frustrated, "Guess its onto the digital age for me."
Chloe continued to glance over at me and she saw some of my new photos, "Are these your new photos?" she asked. She picked up the photo I had taken in the bathroom of the butterfly. She knew where it was taken, "Wait, I've seen this before," I was going to speak, but the words didn't come, and Chloe spoke before I really could speak, "No way!" she exclaimed, "When did you take this?! In the bathroom today. You took this photo, you brat?! You set off the fire alarm! No wonder Nathan was all in your face in the parking lot today. It totally makes sense! You hella saved my life, Max. Now tell me the truth."
I knew Chloe wouldn't let it be, so I sighed, "I was there hiding in the corner," I confessed.
"You're a ninja!" Chloe exclaimed.
"A ninja would've cut Nathan's head off," I said, "I just took a butterfly photo."
"That is so badass!" Chloe exclaimed.
"And I almost wet myself when I saw the gun," I said.
"So, did you recognize me?" Chloe asked me.
"No, I didn't," I said, "Your hairstyle and the clothes you wear are much different from when I last saw you."
"So, you must've heard our conversation?" Chloe asked.
"Yeah, I heard you talking about money and drugs, but everything else was a blur," I said, "I was scared shitless, especially when he brought that gun out."
"Did you tell anyone?" Chloe asked.
"I di-," I cut myself off, as I had almost slipped about my rewind power, "No, when I left the bathroom, Mr. Madsen got all up in my face and questioned me. The principal had to get him to leave me alone. My mind was racing so much that I just walked passed him when he tried to get my attention."
I felt bad for not telling Chloe the entire truth, but a half truth would have to do for now. Truth was, I did initially tell the principal, but he didn't believe me. I was mad at him for not believing me, so I walked right by him on purpose.
Chloe's face hardened at what I had told her, "Geez, talk about paranoid rent a cop," she said, "And good for you for not wasting time on the drunken jackass of a principal. All he cares about is money," there was more silence as Chloe walked over to one of her drawers, pulled out a camera and walked over to me, "I knew it was your birthday last month, so I want you to have this. It was my real father's."
I looked at the camera, and I didn't feel it was right for me to take it, "I can't take this, Chloe," I said.
"Yes you can," Chloe insisted, "My dad would've wanted you to have it, and I know it will be used awesomely. And I'll take this photo as a symbol of our reunion. Cool?"
Now feeling better about the camera, I gladly took it, "Of course its cool!" I exclaimed, 'Now I don't have to go into the digital age,' I thought to myself.
Chloe took the butterfly photo before putting it away, "Come on, let's thrash this place!" she said before putting on some music. This time, something more upbeat.
Chloe got onto the bed and started dancing. I couldn't help but laugh and enjoy what I was seeing, "You're crazy," I laughed.
"Yup, I'm fucking insane in the brain!" Chloe exclaimed, "Come on, take a picture with me with your new camera and dance! Shake that boney white ass!"
Chloe took a puff of her joint and I couldn't help but chuckle at her. I aimed my camera and took a photo before trying my hardest to dance myself, and felt very awkward.
The good moment was interrupted when I heard a man's voice from downstairs, "Chloe are you up there?!" he shouted.
"Hurry up, turn it off!" Chloe exclaimed.
I turned the radio off.
"How many times have I told you to stop blasting that punk shit?!" he shouted angrily.
Chloe was clearly annoyed now, "Dude, the music isn't even on!" she shouted back.
"I'm coming up there!" he shouted, "We need to talk!"
"You need to hide," Chloe said frantically.
I looked at the punk girl, and after everything, I was not going to hide, "No way!" I exclaimed. I remembered seeing the files and cameras installed. While this wasn't officially my house, I was technically apart of the family long before David had come into the picture, "If he wants to get mad at me, let him."
Chloe looked at me, but let it go and sat down on her bed and waited as the steps got louder. The door opened and David Madsen barged into the room. He looked at me angrily, "What is she doing here?" he demanded.
"None of your business," Chloe snapped.
"I don't like strangers here," David snapped.
"Dude, stop freaking," Chloe said, "She's my friend."
"Pfft, another one of your friends," he scoffed, "And I told you to never go through any of my files."
"I didn't go through any of your files, David," Chloe said, "I can really care less about your files."
"You care about starting shit, Chloe," David said, "And its getting old," he walked further into the room, "One of my guns is missing. Did you take it?"
"I didn't take your stupid gun, David," Chloe said, "Don't you believe in gun control?"
David took a few sniffs and saw the weed, "Is that grass?!" he demanded, "Have you been smoking in here again? Answer me now! That's an order!"
Before Chloe could answer, I knew I needed to say something, as I was really not liking David.
Stay quiet. (Drag mouse to the left)
Take the blame. (Drag mouse to the right)
Tear into David. (Drag mouse down.)
With all the anger I could muster, I glared at David, "Why don't you leave her alone!" I exclaimed. This caused David to be stunned, but I was not finished, "And I don't appreciate being called a stranger. Whether you like it or not, David, I've been apart of this family much longer than you have! So if anyone's the outsider, its you!" David's face was turning beet red, but I was still far from tearing into him, "First you harass me after I left the bathroom, then you nag poor Kate Marsh, and now you're barging in here like you own this house and calling me a stranger and accusing Chloe of things? By the way, I saw the video footage you have of the house. Maybe find a woman that's not vulnerable and lonely instead of walking in and trying to play daddy, which you do a shitty job at, anyway!"
Both Chloe and David were stunned at how harsh I was being. For Chloe, that shock turned to complete joy. For David, the shot turned to pure rage and he gave me a death glare that would make the meanest person on earth jealous. He stalked towards he and got right in my face, "You get the hell out of my house now, or I'll call the cops!" he shouted. I wasn't backing down, "Do you hear me, girl?! If I ever see you around here, I will personally deal with you myself! I am so sick of you Blackwell losers thinking you can disrespect authority! You earlier, then that punk kid related to that science teacher dropping things on my head, now you in my house talking back to me. Get going, solder!"
I was not backing down, "For the last time, this is NOT your house!' I shouted, "This is Joyce's house!"
"That's it!" David shouted before grabbing me by the arm. This enraged Chloe. She picked up the lamp near the closet, snuck behind David and hit him in the back with it with all her might, breaking it, "AAARRRGGG!" he shouted in agony.
"Don't you ever touch my friend, you fucking asshole!" Chloe shouted.
David, no longer able to hold back his rage, stormed towards the door, "I won't forget this!" he exclaimed, "You're in deep shit when your mother gets home, Chloe!" he looked at me, 'And you're in deep trouble too, Max!"
With that, David slammed the door with all his might.
With David out of sight, Chloe was happy, "Dude, that was fucking awesome!" she exclaimed, "I've never seen him put in his place like that."
I let out a long sigh. In truth, I did go a bit far with my words, but after everything I went through today, and this being my third encounter with that asshole, I just couldn't hold back. I could rewind and redo the conversation all over again. But there was something that stopped me just as I raised my hand to rewind, 'No, I'll live with David being angry with me if it means regaining Chloe's trust in me after five years,' I thought to myself and put my hand down, "The fucker deserved it," I finally said.
Chloe grabbed the gun that David was looking for. I wanted to lecture her, but after what happened to her in the bathroom earlier, I wasn't going to say anything, "Come on, let's go somewhere else for a bit," she said, "Let's leave out the window."
We left out the window and got into Chloe's truck and drove off.
We arrived at the trail that lead to the lighthouse. I had this familiar feeling that I was just here, but I knew it had been ages since I was last here.
My phone went off a couple of times and I pulled the device out and checked. The first was from Kate thanking me for standing up to David for her. The second was from Warren, and he sent me a selfie of him with his new black eye from the parking lot fight with Nathan.
I put my phone away and continued up the trail. I reached the top near the lighthouse and saw Chloe sitting on the bench. I took a photo of Chloe staring off into the sunset. I sat beside Chloe, "You want some company?" I asked.
"Sure," Chloe replied. She had a worried look on her face, though, "So when you were tearing into my step-pickle earlier, you said something about cameras."
"Yes, when I was looking for the tools in the garage, I saw the footage on the monitor," I said, "And yes, he's been bullying Kate. I snagged this from the garage."
I opened my bag and pulled out the files David had. Chloe was stunned, "Oh my fucking god!" she exclaimed, "Dude, I know Kate. I met her last week Thursday in the student parking lot. She helped me put up those posters."
This made me feel a lot better about things. I had no clue that Kate was the person that helped Chloe last Thursday until now, "Yeah, she's very helpful," I said.
I thought about telling Chloe about all the bullshit Kate had been going through, but I felt that it was Kate's place to do it, not mine.
I put the files I had stolen from the garage back into my bag before the conversation went back to Nathan. Chloe had told me about him drugging her, but he got away. As we were talking, I zoned out and started having the vision again. The storm was happening and tearing Arcadia Bay apart. I reached the area where we were sitting and I saw the flier labeled Friday, October 11th.
Chloe got me out of the vision and I told her everything, but she didn't seem to believe me until we felt snowflakes coming down, and it was like 80 degrees out.
End of Chrysalis: Max's P.O.V
I summarized a lot of the conversation and other stuff, but there are plenty of LPs on YouTube if you want to watch what I summarized.
I know I went very extreme with the room incident with David, but when I've played the game myself and watched LPs of the game, I've always wanted to tear into that man.
