Harry Potter, fourth Champion of the TriWizard tournament, stalked through the maze. While it was true that he did not want to be a part of this fiasco, he was now working on winning this contest.
At the beginning of this year, he had had hope for the future. That was a think of the past.
When his name had come out of the Goblet, Harry had immediately protested. Quickly coming up with possible avenues to get him out of the tournament, he had immediately argued that Karkaroff was correct in that Hogwarts should only have one champion, thus he should he disqualified.
Dumbledore had immediately proclaimed that because this was true, Harry could no longer be considered a Hogwarts student but must still compete.
Harry had then immediately protested that the rules stated said that all participants were to be of age. Therefore he should be disqualified.
Mr. Crouch kaboshed that. By the Goblet of Fire giving out his name, it had decreed that he was mature enough to compete fully. All of those adults present agreed.
When he had returned to Gryffindor, most noticed that his uniform no longer had Gryffindor colors. He explained what had happened. This resulted in Gryffindor turning on him. As far as they were concerned, he was no longer welcome. The Deputy Headmistress had come and, agreeing with the students, had arranged visitor's quarters.
When Dumbledore had questioned his Deputy, she had explained the necessity and Dumbledore had agreed.
It fit quite into his plans to have Harry isolated from the rest of the student body.
While predictably, Ron had deemed him a traitor, the loss of Hermione's support had been unexpected. In truth, she did not want to distance herself but the other Gryffindors made it clear that it was him or them. And she was a Muggleborn.
And so, Harry was quite isolated from everyone.
This caused him have to be much more conscious of details. This led him to the realization that the Defense Professor was not Alastor Moody. It had taken him until March to find this out but he had comforted himself that Moody was obviously being kept alive as he continued to show up on the Map.
Dobby had become a lifesaver. Dobby had no loyalty toward Hogwarts outside of being grateful for a job. And he preferred to work for Harry.
As Mrs. Weasley had listened to her children and the bad press written by Rita Skeeter, she had not arranged to stand as his family for the visit before the finale. Remus, however, had come. And Sirius was not present in his animagus form – he would be watching from the Forbidden Forest, out of sight. Remus had been Harry's hostage as Ron was unwilling to do anything the help in the second task.
Remus had been horrified to learn how ostracized Harry had become. And so he was willing to assist Harry with his plans.
During the "family visit" Harry had gone to Gringotts and made a few arrangements based on what had happened. After the task had begun Harry, being in last place due to unfair scores, had methodically gone through the obstacles.
Simultaneously, Dobby – on Harry's order – had taken Moody's trunk to the Headmaster's Office and put it on the desk. On it was a note which said "Please find the real Alastor Moody within." The Headmasters from the past had not been present as they were out and about, trying to catch a glimpse from different points in the castle.
Due to Barty Crouch Junior's interference, Harry had wound up approaching the cup at the same time that Cedric was dealing with an Acromatula. Harry had pointed Cedric toward it (it was coming from behind) with sufficient time for Cedric to protect himself – Harry left him to it and went to pick up the Cup himself.
He had not been expecting a portkey.
When he arrived at the graveyard, he had taken one look around and realized that this was likely the trap that the whole fiasco had been building toward.
He had immediately pulled his wand and, deciding to get out of there but still wishing to be recognized as the Champion of the tournament, had picked the cup back up.
This had triggered the original portkey spell and brought him immediately back to the winner's circle.
When he had arrived, the confusion of the maze disappearing as it had been designed to do was still ongoing. The fact that Harry had been gone for a full minute rather than a few seconds worried Dumbledore, but he had arrived safely.
Cornelius Fudge, who was giving out the prize, proclaimed him the winner and handed over the galleons. Because of Harry's current unpopularity, he made no large spectacle of it. It was then mentioned that there would be ceremony the next night.
Harry immediately went back to his "guest quarters", speaking to no one. Many Gryffindors wished to congratulate him in order to get back on his good side but he was gone too fast.
He was also gone too fast for the false Alastor Moody to accost him. Barty Crouch Junior understood immediately that the trap had failed. He made his way back to his quarters to pack. He would then go to the classroom and kill Moody.
Dumbledore, however, had gone back to his office with the other heads and the Minister to ensure that the ceremony was properly planned.
Through pure chance, Dumbledore arrived just in time to apprehend the false Defense teacher with the assistance of Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall. Karkaroff, Maxine, and Fudge were witnesses.
Snape had retrieved Veritaserum and the entire story had come out. Dumbledore used the Headmasters' portraits to ensure that Harry Potter was still in his guest quarters. Due to the time it took to deal with the immediate matters, Dumbledore planned on speaking to the boy the next day.
It would, however, be too late. As soon as the Maurader's Map had shown the false Moody being taken away (Dumbledore went back to the Ministry with Fudge and the aurors who had gathered the prisoner) and the others leaving the castle back to their school's lodgings, Remus and Harry had made their way out of the castle with Dobby's assistance.
Dumbledore had quickly gotten Amelia Bones assistance in traveling to the graveyard. Barty Crouch Junior had told them where the cup was supposed to go. And though one of the aurors was hurt by the large snake (and been immediately portkeyed to St. Mungos), Peter Pettigrew and the homunculus of Lord Voldemort had been captured.
Fudge had immediately wanted to cover it up but too many had seen the man thought to be dead. Pettigrew had been questioned under Veritaserum and all now knew of Sirius' Black's innocence.
Dumbledore arrived back to the castle around 3:30 AM.
The next morning, Minerva McGonagall was sent to Harry Potter's room to tell him that the Headmaster wanted to see him. They had waited for him to arrive to breakfast but he hadn't. Most assumed he had slept in (with Snape complaining about Potter's penchant for dramatics).
McGonagall did not find Harry within the guest quarters. The portrait said that he had told it that he was moving back to Gryffindor. However, he could not be found there either. She then called for a house elf to find out if he was in the kitchens. He wasn't.
She returned to the Headmaster's office to report his absence. A more careful searching of the guest quarters found the note. It was immediately brought to the Headmaster's office.
McGonagall, Snape, and the Headmaster were all present for it to be read out loud.
"Headmaster Albus Dumbledore
Now that the TriWizard Tournament has been concluded, my magic is no longer under threat. This means that I find no reason to remain within Hogwarts Castle.
Though I am aware that there is supposed to be a formal ceremony naming me Champion, my current status with the other students of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons, I realize that none of them would have any wish to see a celebration of my winning the tournament.
Considering that every friendship that I had with other Hogwarts students has been broken this year due to their belief that I cheated my way into the tournament or because of pressure from the other students to not associate with me, I find that there is no one left to give me any reason to return here. Only the loss of friendship with Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom cause me any regret in leaving.
Seeing that I have absolutely no love for my Muggle relatives and they have no love for me, I have absolutely no ties with Muggle Britain either.
As I am no longer on the roles of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry due to your own proclamation of such when I was chosen, I find that even this tie is gone.
My former relationship with the Weasleys has also been sundered due to Ronald Weasley believing I was a traitor and Gryffindor's collective decision that I was a traitor. This means that the other Weasley children also no longer tie me here.
My godfather is still a wanted man within Magical Britain for a crime that he did not commit. As Severus Snape ensured that he was not exonerated, he cannot live within Britain any more than I wish to. Remus Lupin could have kept me here as the last tie to my parents, but Severus Snape ensured that he had no real ties within Britain either.
I was officially declared of age because that was what the rules of the Tournament required. This was backed up by yourself and the other officials. With the Head of Wizengamot, the ICW, and the representatives of the Ministry declaring me of age, the goblins saw no reason that my entire inheritance should not be disbursed. All funds under my family's control as well as all funds under Sirius' control have now been moved out of Britain.
Considering that Professor McGonagall has withdrawn her own support as she is no longer my Head of House, Professor Sprout how actively dislikes me because I seemed to have stolen the prestige of Hufflepuff having an uncontested Champion, Professor Flitwick is indifferent to my presence, and Professor Snape has long stated his desire that I no longer be allowed to study within Hogwarts, I find that there is no advocate for me within Hogwarts whom I can trust to act with my best interests.
Considering that Magical Britain has also responded negatively as regards my presence and person due to the reporting done in the Daily Prophet, I can think of no one here that I could turn to for support anyway had I desired to stay.
Hogwarts and Britain now contain only pain and misery for me. And so, I wish you and the rest of Hogwarts and Magical Britain the best, but I am now off to attempt to find some measure of happiness elsewhere.
Have a good life.
Harry James Potter
