A/N:
SPECIAL CHAPTER! Also, I wasn't all that up for writing action this time so I kept it to a minimum. And oh, yeah, most of this is in Kyoya's pov. Woot woot. Also, we'll be kinda skipping through timelines, you'll get it when you read the chapter but just a head's up!
21. Special Chapter — Second Edition!
Kyoya's seventh summer began with the disappointing news that his brother would not be there for most of it.
And moreover, he had been told that he would have to spend his summer not just without his brother but also away from home, in a town called Namimori. His mother informed him that he had visited the place when he was five years old but he could barely remember a thing about it.
(Until of course he met the bunny again.)
He clung on to Kuroo's sleeve with furrowed brows. "No."
"Yes, Kyo-chan." Kuroo only helplessly laughed in response. "I have to go with Uncle Fon to Macau so be a good boy and listen to mother alright?"
(While the Hibari could protect themselves just fine, Izanami was not willing to risk both the lives of her sons. Kuroo was already walking into a gamble she couldn't prevent no matter how hard she tried to, and staying with her youngest in Kyoto where they were vulnerable to attacks due to the sudden state of unrest in the clan was the last thing she was willing to do. So of course she chose the one place she felt safe in to retreat to for the time being.)
"But Kuroo won't be there."
"No, I won't be. But I will come back at the earliest so you don't have to worry about that." Kuroo told Kyoya as he fondly ruffled his hair. "Namimori is a good place. Consider it your second home, you'll love it. I promise."
Kyoya bit his lower lip, eyebrows furrowing even deeper. "But…no one to bite."
Kuroo gave a long drawn sigh as though he had been expecting this. "There's a zoo there. You'll get to see all your carnivores and herbivores up close. It's even better than Kyoto's zoo. Less crowds."
The little demon perked up at the news.
"Young Master Kuroo. The car is ready to take you." One of the guards stepped into the house to inform him. He politely took his leave right after receiving a nod in reply.
"Okay, I'll be leaving now." Kuroo pulled Kyoya into a warm hug before placing a quick kiss to his forehead. "Now remember what I said and don't give mother too much trouble. She's already been through quite a lot this week."
"Mnh." Hibari Kyoya reluctantly agreed as he broke off the hug and followed his older brother out the house. "Come back fast."
"Kufufu, of course I will." Kuroo laughed.
The little demon stood by the door, silently watching the car his brother had gotten into drive off until it was out of sight.
Kyoya stood still, refusing to move from his spot (and none of the guards even dared to ask him to do otherwise because despite being a kid, he was still a Hibari with a crazy temper) until he was called in by his aunt who fussed over how he hadn't gotten ready yet since they would also be leaving in a while.
Everything was so quiet.
Hibari Kyoya lay flat out on the wooden floor of the family home in Namimori. He did recognize this place somehow but otherwise he couldn't really recall most parts of his time spent here.
"Hot." He mumbled to himself, wanting to curl into a ball but unable to do so because that would only worsen the state he was currently in.
There was no ceiling fan so he had to pass off his hot days in the mercy of the portable fan turned up to the max and the cool breeze that came by every once in a while through the open sliding doors that led out to the back garden.
"Yacchan." Hibari Izanami called him by the affectionate nickname she had given him as she entered the room with a plate of sliced watermelons in one hand. "Here, have some of these. They're very juicy, your aunt and I just picked them up from the market this morning."
He blinked and eyed the fruit, still lying down like a lazy cat.
"Sit up. Don't be so lazy." Izanami laughed as she helped her son up. "I met my friend by chance today and promised her I would come by later to visit so we're going after this. Together. Remember her cute little son who you liked to play with?"
Kyoya paid more attention to picking out the seeds from the fruit than to his mother's words. He couldn't understand why on earth such an herbivorous fruit had so many seeds, it was very troublesome. By the time he was done cleaning up the first slice he was already exhausted.
A yawn escaped his lips as he took a bite of the watermelon.
"So get dressed alright? We'll leave at three."
Kyoya turned to his mother and tilted his head to the side in slight confusion. Leave? Three?
Izanami looked at him and sighed. "A play date. I'm taking you for a play date so be obedient and get ready by three."
He frowned. "But—"
"You've spent the last two days here in Namimori just lazing around." Izanami shook her head. "It's time take part in some social interaction even if it means getting allergies. But that won't happen because you're meeting with just one person, so be obedient and listen to your mother."
"But Kuroo…not here." His lips drew to an unintentional pout.
"Your brother will not always be around to help you get to know someone." She just gave him that one smile that said he wasn't in a position to try and negotiate how he wanted to spend his vacation. "Case closed. Now finish the rest of these slices, or I'll be complaining about your behavior to Kuroo."
So by the time three in the evening rolled by, Kyoya was all dressed up in a shirt that had a pokéball pictured on it (Kuroo had bought it for himself but was dismayed when it turned out a size smaller than expected so of course he'd given it to his little baby brother) and shorts. Aunt Alison had given him a bucket hat to wear just in case it got too sunny for him outside and then took a picture of him because Kuroo had asked her to so that he could put it in his album of 'My Baby Brother Kyo-chan'.
They walked over to Izanami's friend's house which wasn't too far from where the Hibari family home was.
"Ah, Izanami." A very cheerful woman greeted them at the door with a bright and warm smile. "You're finally here, come on in."
Kyoya curiously eyed the house as he stepped in after his mother. As he did, his eyes met with huge caramel ones that peered at him from behind the cheerful mother herbivore. He narrowed his own steel-grey ones which startled the small herbivore who quickly hid away.
"Who?" He asked his mother, pointing at the spawn of the mother herbivore whose fluffy brown hair was still in sight.
"Yacchan, it's rude to point at people."
"Ah, Tsu-kun, don't hide. Come and greet your friend."
Kyoya still had his eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the small herbivore. He had this inkling that he'd seen him somewhere when it suddenly struck him, "Bunny."
Sawada Tsunayoshi felt chills from the very familiar name he'd once been labeled with.
The raven haired boy wore a satisfied smile as he approached him on his own accord. He stretched out a hand and brought it down upon Tsuna's shoulder in a vice grip one wouldn't have expected from a seven year old. "Hello."
"Hie!"
The poor little bunny trembled as he was suddenly pulled into the other's embrace. Kyoya gave a happy smile as his arms tightened around Tsuna. He had let the bunny escape once, he wasn't going to make that same mistake this time but first, there was a tiny problem— "Where are your ears?"
"I'm not a bunny!"
"It's alright. I will get them back for you."
"They're getting on very well." Nana beamed before ushering the two women into the living room. She then turned to her son who only eyed her with a look that screamed for help. "Tsu-kun, take your friend to play okay? Show him your toys and when you're hungry, come down to eat okay?"
"O-Oka-san!" Tsuna whined but was dismayed when his mother turned away to tend to her guests, leaving him alone in the tight embrace of the beast behind him. The beast he'd have nightmares of sometimes, which was why he'd never forgotten about him, or his kind brother— "Ah, where's Kuroo-nii?"
Kyoya's grip only tightened at the mention of his older brother, making the little one in his grasp squeak. He couldn't express how a sudden burst of jealousy had flared in his heart. Kuroo was his brother. Not anyone else's.
"Let's go play." Kyoya only replied as he tactfully dodged the question and stirred the other towards the stairs.
"But y-you need to leave me. We must climb stairs and we fall if we walk," Tsuna helplessly gestured at the Hibari's arms which were tightly wrapped around his shoulders, "walk like this."
"…"
"So let go?"
"No."
"E-Eh!?"
Kyoya and his little bunny got along very well.
And it wasn't an exaggeration.
Tsunayoshi had somehow gotten more comfortable around the frightening raven haired boy who would protectively hold his hand whenever they went out of the house to go to the nearby park.
He was happy being with 'Yacchan' (a nickname Tsuna wouldn't dare use in the future and would bang his head against the wall at the thought of how casually he had used it when he was five).
No one could make Tsuna cry when he was with Yacchan, right from the scary neighbor's dog to the other kids who liked to bully him— they all ran for cover just at the sight of Yacchan's glare which was worthy of a demon's.
Tsunayoshi felt safe.
A feeling he hadn't felt with anyone else but his mother in a long while.
"Yacchan. You leaving Sunday?" Tsuna asked, his tone a little sad as he gave his sandcastle firm pats.
Kyoya nodded, seeming the least bothered with the name his little bunny used to call him with. Technically, the herbivore was his pet so nicknames were permissible. Maybe.
"Will you come back?"
"Dunno."
"Namimori not safe place." Tsuna sighed. "Oka-san says many scary men guard main city. Scary to go to city."
"Scary men?" Kyoya snorted. "All herbivores. Nothing scary."
The little bunny furrowed his brows. "But…but they don't eat veggies."
"Not their food that makes them herbivores. Their strength." Kyoya smugly shared his (questionable) knowledge. "They fight. But can't fight better than me." He paused before adding in an afterthought, "and Kuroo."
"Kuroo-nii is strong?" Tsuna looked up from his sandcastle with sparkling eyes.
"Of course." Kyoya bristled. "Even I am. I'm stronger than Kuroo. I can beat him."
Tsunayoshi had a look of renewed respect in his eyes. "Wow! That's so cool!"
Hibari Kyoya nodded before lapsing into deep thought. He hummed to himself as he tapped his fingers against the stone he'd turned into a seat for himself as he watched the little bunny play. He was strong, stronger than his brother too (perhaps). So there could be something he could do for the herbivore right?
Of course, it would come with a price.
But that aside…
"I'll protect Namimori." Kyoya declared rather dramatically as he abruptly rose to his feet, bringin out his tonfas in a flash as he did.
Tsunayoshi was momentarily stunned with the sudden turn of events before excitedly clapping his hands and cheering the raven haired boy.
I'll protect Namimori.
It was a promise.
And Kyoya never broke promises.
(I'll protect you).
[Three years later…]
It began with a crazy idea from his brother that Kyoya all but readily agreed to because it lined up with the promise he had made with his little bunny once upon a summer afternoon.
"I'm bored. Let's do something interesting." Kuroo had suddenly popped up into the alleyway where Kyoya had been taking care of some herbivore trash who dared to try and get lunch money from him.
"Bored?" Kyoya raised a brow as he tucked away his tonfas and turned to face his older brother.
The other had grown taller and his features had becomes more well-defined as he hit puberty at the age of fourteen. Kuroo had come back from France (currently for the holidays) with a rather terrifying aura about him that people usually took light of because of his soft appearance— and his hair which had gotten longer too (falling to his lower back).
Kuroo habitually had it tied up in a low and loose ponytail.
But when Kuroo didn't have his hair done up (on days when he felt a little too lazy to care about his appearance), it would be left to cascade down his shoulders giving him a very androgynous and ethereal feel that usually made people do a double take as they tried to guess his gender.
Or just because they wanted to get a better look at the pretty boy with lovely eyes.
This fact however didn't seem to bother Kuroo (like it had once did) who only seemed to enjoy it now, being the narcissistic boy that he was.
"Yes, Kyo-chan." Kuroo sighed as he elegantly tucked a loose strand of hair behind his ear. He had left it open this time, or probably didn't have the energy to tie it so he had just let it be. "Kyoto doesn't have interesting things to do."
What Kuroo meant was that there weren't any jobs for him to take up back here in the comforts of home, and he wasn't quite used to the quiet life of just spending his time peacefully without killing or planning to kill someone, or dealing with the ever present nuisances like Casimir and Fon, and his dearest cousin, and that prince, and Connie and Connie's uncle.
And Xing, good heavens.
"What do you want to do then?" Kyoya blinked as he stepped away from the pile of bodies and towards his brother who took him by the hand.
"I don't know, I was just planning something fun…" Kuroo said with an ominous smile on his lips.
"Fun?" Kyoya furrowed his brows.
"Kufufufu, you'll love it. I promise."
"What?"
"Let's take over Namimori."
It felt like the world had suddenly come to a halt.
Then, Kyoya blinked. "Okay."
"Let's leave by tonight!"
While Kyoya lay fast asleep, cozily within the covers of his own bed in the Namimori Hibari family home, content and excited for all the 'biting to death' he was going to do in the morning, his older brother was busy with another task at hand.
"Are you the one in charge here?" Kuroo asked with a pleasant smile as he held the man twice his size who was now sporting several broken bones by the collar.
The poor man gurgled unintelligibly before whimpering in pain and passing out when Kuroo dropped him.
He sighed and dusted his hands before turning to face the rest of the man's subordinates who stared at him in horror. "Do you have anyone else in charge? Or was that your boss? I'm going to be quite disappointed if you say that was him, but I do hope he was the last of your 'bosses'."
As if on cue, the door to the warehouse (this was so cliché, Kuroo had to wonder if the Hibari also had their own warehouse where they conducted their shady business too, he would have to change things if that was indeed the case) slammed open, revealing a new batch of lowlifes who appeared more buffed up than the ones Kuroo had just dealt with. And there in the midst of them stood a man with a heavy gold chain around his neck and shades resting on his nose as he scanned the scenario before him.
"You useless shits can't even deal with a kid—"
How typical.
There were gasps of shock as the man was immediately swallowed up by a giant Venus flytrap that had suddenly shot out from the ground under him before he could even complete his sentence.
"Now, please tell me that was the last one."
Kuroo sounded slightly tired.
After all, he had already dealt with almost six faux people-in-charge, and their subordinates too.
There was silence before a roar ripped through the air and everyone present (who could still move and didn't have their bones broken yet) charged at him. Well, Kuroo thought appreciatively, at least they're moving together and not coming at me one on one.
He leisurely pushed his black tresses over his shoulder and calmly got into his fighting stance, legs slightly apart and hands loosely positioned in front of him as he took in a deep breath. Finally, some action after a week's worth of nothing exciting.
He leapt off the ground, limbs shooting out in a speed incomprehensible to the poor fools who had tried to crowd and overpower him with sheer number. They stared in shock at the empty spot where the boy had once been standing him, and then screamed in pain as their legs suddenly seemed to lose the ability to hold them up. They fell to the ground, clutching their kneecaps that had shattered in the mere seconds the boy had bypassed them to get to the front of the warehouse.
"Be happy I'm not taking lives here." Kuroo said in a tone that sounded like he was talking to an ungrateful child. He didn't want to let the scum scot free honestly, however there were restrictions that had been placed upon him so he had no other option but to roll along with it. "I just need to make sure no one makes it out of here until the cops come to get you. You should be thanking me."
There were only groans and moans in response.
"I really do hope there aren't any of you left." Kuroo said. "But if you do want revenge and you're looking for a guy, I'm going to be saying my name just once so you better remember it."
Hibari Kuroo.
Unbeknownst to him, from then on, he had ended up turning into a rather infamous urban legend of Namimori.
A mysterious figure only the yakuza of the area remembered from a frightful night where their lives changed forever. Only a few remembered his name, and even they weren't brave enough to utter it, afraid that they might accidentally summon him because they believed he wasn't human.
Luscious long raven hair, ivory skin and devilish stormy bluish-grey eyes that would suck the soul of whoever stared into it.
The devil's incarnate himself.
"I'll welcome you with open arms," his parting words rang like a bell in their minds, haunting them from that night onwards, "and send you straight into the depths of hell."
Hibari Kuroo smiled as he strolled over to the Namimori Middle School with his brother, hand in hand.
He'd taken care of the bigger fries last night, so all that was left were the student delinquents that plagued the place. Coincidentally, the main base for said delinquents was apparently the middle school that his baby brother would one day have an iron fist of a rule over. So this was good progress in a way.
"Aren't you excited?" Kuroo asked.
Kyoya nodded as he stared at the very abandoned looking school with an almost bloodthirsty look in his eyes. "Many herbivores here?"
"Correct." He replied as they walked past the gates. "All you need to do is show them who is boss. It'll be good practice for you in a way. I'll come in and help you if you need me to. This school is my present to you, okay?"
"Present?"
"Yes. You'll take good care of my present won't you?"
Kyoya visibly straightened up. "Of course."
Kuroo smirked. His baby brother was just so adorable.
"But why are we attacking this school again?" Kyoya furrowed his brows as he turned to face his brother. Weren't they supposed to 'take over' Namimori?
"The bad boys here apparently have a good hold on the reins of power of the place. So if we want to take over Namimori, we start with the obvious sources of power. Snatch it right out of their hands and make it ours so that people come to understand that we're now the ones in control." Kuroo patiently explained before pressing a finger against his lips and dropping his tone as though he was saying a secret. "As for the rest of the authority, the work done behind the scenes, don't worry. Your brother has a way with things alright?"
Kyoya had a feeling the other was keeping a lot of details from him, but that didn't really matter for now at least. He had herbivores to bite to death after all.
It wasn't even a minute that they entered the gates that they were confronted by a large number of delinquents all dressed in Namimori Middle's uniforms even though some of the crowd seemed a little too old for it. Kuroo found them funny rather than intimidating while his brother brimmed with excitement.
"Okay, they're here." Kuroo gave a pleased hum as he placed a hand on Kyoya's shoulder to prevent him from jumping into action too soon. He wanted to draw out the leader after all. That would allow things to finish off earlier, unlike last night.
The unruly crowd slowly parted in the middle to make room for a smaller group of students who walked up to the front, giving off an aura to others (not the Hibari brothers though) that they shouldn't be messed around with.
The one who was supposedly the leader, since he threw them a nasty glare that the others around him copied right after, was tall, well-built, had bleached the typical yankee bleached blond hair and looked very familiar. But Kuroo couldn't really place a name to the face.
"Whaddya kids want?"
Someone from the crowd asked.
"To bite you to death."
"Your school."
The brothers answered simultaneously in completely contrasting tones that made the crowd sweatdrop.
The blond leader grunted with a roll of his eyes as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. "Look, I don't know who sent you over but you better leave before you regret coming here to mess around." He shook his head. "There was some trouble that sprang up downtown early this morning, so I don't have time to deal with…some bunch of stuck up kids."
Kuroo found this whole affair quite amusing.
And he wanted to know what kind of trouble had been caused because of him. He had retired to bed a little too early because the impromptu journey to Namimori paired with a whole yakuza's worth of men to battle had tired him out. He blamed his stamina on the lack of action he'd had to go through after returning back home for vacation.
Kyoya, on the other hand who was all rested and brimming with energy, only stepped forward and brought his tonfas out with a flick of his hands. He had probably not paid any attention to whatever the blond herbivore had just blabbered on about; he could barely contain his excitement any longer.
"Come." Kyoya invited as he crouched to his position with a frightening smile.
He just ten years old but he'd almost made a few in the crowd piss their pants with just one look at his smile.
"Stubborn shits." The blond leader clicked his tongue before gesturing with his hand. "Get them!"
What went down in the next half an hour was a bloodbath that gave birth to the Demon of Namimori.
…
"What's your name?" Hibari Kyoya demanded as he nudged the head of the blond leader on the ground with his foot.
This was his first time coming across someone who had actually withstood his attacks (Kuroo was out of the picture because he rarely entertained him) for at least ten minutes, so he was undeniably impressed.
He was on the verge of upgrading the blond from an herbivore to a carnivore.
"Tch." The other spat out blood before turning his face upwards to face the little raven haired boy who he had made a mistake of underestimating. The boy was a lethal weapon; he almost couldn't feel his own body because of how numb it was now. "You're not bad."
"Your name."
"Why?"
"Or I'll bite you to death."
The blond yankee chuckled. "You're a formidable foe." He met the boy's eyes. "Kusakabe Tetsuya."
Oh, so this is Kyoya's pompadour sidekick.
Kuroo who had been witnessing everything from the sidelines snorted at the realization. No wonder he seemed familiar. He wouldn't have ever guessed that that serious right-hand man was once a blond delinquent.
"Hnn." Kyoya nodded. "This is my school now."
"Of course." Kusakabe easily relented. The boy had after all earned his keep. "And what's your name?"
"Hibari Kyoya." The little demon simply replied before heading over to where his brother patiently stood waiting for him. "Kuroo, now what?"
"Now," Kuroo blinked in a moment's thought, "well, we get you transferred to Namimori."
"Really?" Kyoya deadpanned as he rubbed his lip that had been cut.
"It's your school now so shouldn't you need to guard it?"
"…oh."
"Alright, but first, let's get you cleaned up," Kuroo said as he brought his brother into his arms and stirred him to the direction of home, "and then we'll go get ourselves some sushi for lunch, and then we go meet your little bunny. You want to share the good news, don't you?"
"Mnh."
