During the summer most of our friends turned 17 meaning we were now legal to drink at Wizarding pubs. We had finished our year and were now on summer holidays from Hogwarts for a couple of months. Draco and I barely saw each other all summer even though our friends hang out so much, so we were bound to run into each other. Whenever I would see him, I was polite and said hello, but now more than that, we definitely didn't flirt, and we sort of avoided each other, but we spoke when we had to. It was a bit awkward.
We didn't hang out – luckily our groups of friends had understood that we didn't want to see each other. Me and the girls all went to sail the Greek islands on Daphne's parents sail boat for a couple of weeks. It was amazing, just swimming and tanning and eating brilliant food. We met lots of Brits, particularly a gang of 19 year old boys from Surrey, they were Muggles and we had our fun with them, mocking their Muggle sport called 'football', it seemed to be the equivalent of Quidditch for them.
When we got home I started seeing Miles Bletchley out at parties. It was a fellow Slytherin, two years older than me but I'd never really spoken to him before. I knew he was vaguely friends with the other boys. We really connected at once. He lives really close to me too. He's both funny and sexy – a summer fling is perfect for me at the moment.
About a week ago, I met up with all of the girls from Slytherin. A real girl's night out. The evening began with me, Daphne, Tracey, Aurelia and Millicent round Daphne's house getting ready.
"We're all single right now, yeah...?" said Tracey.
"Right," said me, Daphne, Aurelia and Millicent.
"Well," she continued, "We should go to an over 20s pub... To meet some real men..."
"How'd you expect us to get in?" said Daphne, rolling her eyes. "We're not twenty, are we!"
"And what is wrong with all the boys we already know?" Aurelia filled in.
"They're boys," Tracey emphasised with a sneer. "And I know a bloke who can get us fake ID's... All the boys we know are just so..."
"Boy-ish?" said Daphne. We all laughed.
"Exactly."
That night we went out for a nice girl's night out, getting some drinks, flirting, meeting lots of people we knew... But I missed Miles so I made sure to not kiss anyone else.
The next day, I had a date with Miles, who I'd missed when I was in Greece so we went out to play pool and it was brilliant (he picked me up outside my house and took me side along Apparition). Then we went round his place, and he has a pool so we sat down by the edge of it with our legs in the pool and talked.
Then he smiled and said: "Just stay there for a second."
"Why?" I asked, smiling
"Just getting something." he said and he went into his house. When he came back out he had a bottle of wine and two glasses in his hands, so sweet.
We had a few glasses each and talked and laughed, and then we kissed for the first time. I really like him. I just hope it stays this way, I don't want anything to go wrong.
The next day it was Daphne's birthday. Tracet came around and we lay out in the sun tanning on my manor's deck. Then we went shopping for a present for our dearest Daphne.
Then we showered and did our hair make up and clothes and had a glass of wine and some crisps round my house, smoking on the balcony, and then at 7 it was suddenly time to go round Daphne's, so we Floo'd from my house. When we got there it was a happy mood, there was a long table in the garden and the garden was decorated with lights and balloons. We hugged Daphne lovingly and wished her happy birthday and put our present on a table where a few other presents lay. Aurelia and Millicent were there as well, and a few other of Daphne's girlfriends from Beauxbatons but they were very shy and was only with each other.
Anyway we all helped preparing, setting the table and that. Then two of my other best friends,
Felicia and Molly showed up. Then the lads came – Theo, Blaise, and Crabbe and Goyle. It was the first time I'd seen them in months. It was brilliant to see them, and we all talked and caught up. As we were about to sit down for dinner, Marcus Flint, Montague, Pucey and Draco came. I was speaking to Warrington and Urquhart and had my back to the garden, and then I heard them shouting something over the yard as they came and everyone turned and said hello to them and laughed and that. And I turned and I saw Draco for the first time in months.
He, Marcus, Pucey and Montague came up, through the garden, and greeted everyone, hugging the girls and wishing Daphne a happy birthday and high-fiving with the boys. I sipped my glass of wine as they came to say hello to me, Warrington and Urquhart. It was slightly awkward; me and Draco hadn't seen each other at all basically since we broke up. Which was months ago, so this was awkward.
As Marcus hugged me, lifting me up as he did, said he was happy to see me, it'd been so long – Draco greeted Warrington and Urquhart, then Marcus greeted them as Draco turned to me.
He slightly nodded, raising his eyebrows with a small smile on his face, as if I was only an acquaintance, not worthy of a handshake or hug. It felt weird to say the least. I gave a slight wave, which felt awkward as well. I sipped my glass of wine again, and Daphne announced that we all should sit down and dig in. I sat in-between Tracey and Millicent, with Theo, Blaise, Draco and Marcus Flint opposing us, at the other end of the table. We began by toasting Daphne and then we began eating, it was a really good time, especially since we hadn't hung out all of us including the boys for a long time. We all began eating, drinking and hanging out.
"This is really good!" Tracey said to Daphne over the table.
"A TOAST!" exclaimed Aurelia and stood up. Everyone's hurried to get on their feet and Aurelia raised her glass.
"To my best friend and one of the sweetest persons I know! Daphne!" Aurelia said, happily. We all agreed and raised our glasses and toasted her.
Then we had dessert. I had so much fun talking to Warrington, Urquhart, Tracey and Daphne mostly.
"D'you want to get a fag?" Blaise had come up behind me and asked me.
"Yeah!" I smiled and got up, we walked away, and soon Theo and Warrington followed us and we had a cigarette.
"So good to see you, Pans," said Theo grinning, punching my shoulder.
"Yeah, same, it's been forever," I said smiling. The party music was on in the background, the others were beginning to clear the table.
"How's life?" Theo asked me.
"I heard about you and Bletchey..." Blaise winked.
I laughed. "Well yeah, he's sweet, I've seen him a few times, but yeah..."
Then we went back and helped clearing the table. Then the party started properly! Me and some of the girls went into the pool, throwing balls around and drinking and laughing , it was brilliant. Then I went up with Tracey and we got towels that we wrapped around us and we sat down at the table with some of the boys. The music was going on in the background and everyone was in a good mood. I had some crisps and drank more.
"How about a game of I never?" Montague suggested.
"Sort of pointless, mate, we know everything about each other anyway," said Blaise, laughing a little. Everyone laughed agreeingly. We all began talking and hanging out, drinking.
I had ignored Draco all night. And that was when he caught my eye across the table. I looked at him for a couple of seconds, with everything going on around us. He just looked at me too, with that little teasing look in his eyes that he always has. Then I sipped my drink and looked away. And he sipped his beer and did the same. It was weird even looking at him, since I hadn't seen him in so long.
I ignored him and we all had a lovely time going in the pool and drinking and swimming and laughing it was fun! Then we got up to dry and as I wrapped a towel around me and then sat down, I noticed Draco looking at me again.
So I looked at him across the table and raised my eyebrows holding up my hands as if to say 'what', and he just sort of smirked and looked away. Then he looked back at me and we had eye contact for a few seconds, then he gave a small smile. And I couldn't help but to reply it, even though I didn't want to.
We both sipped our drinks then. I looked away. Then he reached over the table to talk to me without everyone noticing, and said, "good seeing you," with that small smile. I cursed soundlessly him for it.
I rolled my eyes, not able to keep the small smile from my face, and I looked away as I said, "Yeah, same". It hit me that we used to be best friends not to mention how he was my boyfriend for several years... Naturally I cared.
"Do you want to get a fag?" Draco asked then. I hesitated.
But I couldn't resist. I always like to talk to him. It's weird when he's not in my life. I'm drawn to him and it's so strong. Whatever, it couldn't do any harm chatting a bit over a cigarette, right?
I shrugged, said "all right" and we both got up.
I ignored whoever was looking at us when we left the table, I didn't want anyone to think there was anything between me and Draco. There wasn't anymore! Just catching up a bit. We strolled through the garden and sat down in two lounge chairs by the rear end of the pool where no one else was.
When I sat down, I picked up my pack of cigarettes and took one out and lit in. He did the same.
"Fuck, it's been so long," he chuckled at me.
I remained as neutral and glad as he, replying casually: "Yeah, totally. How have you been?"
I took a drag of my cigarette, looking at him and he swallowed a sip of beer and said: "yeah, good, good," he smiled "you?"
I smiled back. "Yeah, same," I said, nodding slightly.
I could hear the crickets loudly all around us. People were in the pool a bit away, and there was laughter and talking coming from the lively table, yet where the two of us sat it felt so quiet. Both of us were looking away.
"Well, err," Draco began, turning his head back to look at me. "Felt like I wanted to clear the air a bit."
"Oh yeah, me too," I said hastily.
"Don't want it to get awkward... You know..." He went on. He sipped his lager again, looking away.
"Yeah," I agreed. "Since we'll always probably run into each other... Like, at things like this..."
"Spot on..." Draco said, smiling a fake smile and then looking away, seeming slightly awkward which was unusual for him.
I didn't say anything, didn't know what I'd say if I were to say anything. So I kept smoking my cigarette.
He began small talking a bit with me. So we did that for a couple of minutes. Then he decided to clear the air properly.
"Seeing as we'll probably have to run into each other again," he joked, making me grin, "we should probably just..."
"Get on?" I suggested, laughing a little.
"I suppose," Draco grinned. He looked serious then, "Well, I mean, it's not like we weren't friends before, so," he put up his hands, half shrugging as if to show that it wasn't a big thing.
"Yes, I agree, we did use to be really, er, good friends."
Draco nodded, "Exactly, so, to avoid any awkwardness, let's be friends, or at least chummy." He gave a big mocking smile and I laughed.
"You got it, mate." I said.
