Edward ran hard through the pounding rain. He wasn't really sure why he was being chased by his commanding officer, but he was.

"Stop!" Mustang called his voice lined with anger. "Stop, or I'll be forced to shoot!"

Edward gasped. What the heck?! He's going to shoot me?!

"Colonel, there has been a serious misunderstanding!" Edward shouted as he continued running. He clapped his hands together and placed them on the ground. From the pavement several large pillars erupted.

"Misunderstanding? His death is a misunderstanding?!" Mustang shouted as he dodged the pillars.

"What?!" Edward exclaimed, out of breath. He turned the corner and ran into an alleyway.

Dead end.

"Oh, this is just great! This is so stupid!" Edward shouted in annoyance. He wheeled around on his heels only to be met by his, very angry, commanding officer.

"Uhh? Umm, Colonel, I know we've had our differences, but don't you think shooting me is taking it a little too far?!"

"Too far? Killing my subordinate was too far! I'm only returning the favor."

"Kill? I didn't kill any- Colonel you know me. You know I wouldn't kill anyone on your team. You know I wouldn't kill anyone at all!"

"I saw it with my own eyes. Don't you dare say it didn't happen!" The Colonel's eyes flashed. Edward, at first, thought he saw pure anger in the man's eyes, but in the depths he saw hazy guilt. What confused Edward most of all was the glazed, sort of sleepy look, in Mustang's eyes.

"Colonel, are you alright?"

"It was my job to protect him. Now he's dead, and it's your fault! This is for Fullmetal!" Mustang pulled the trigger on his gun.

BANG!

It all went by too fast. Edward wasn't really sure what was happening or what order it was going in. The gunshot seemed to clear up Mustang's glazed over eyes, but Edward couldn't really be sure because before he knew it he was on the ground with a blinding pain in his chest.

Mustang's mind was suddenly cleared with the loud exploding sound of a gunshot. Roy saw the gun in his hand and the small boy staggering backwards before falling to the pavement. It was like waking up from a nightmare only to be forced into an even worse reality.

"No!" Roy dropped the gun on the ground. He ran to the fallen child's side. He placed his hands over Edward's wound, applying pressure.

"W- what's happening? I- I don't understand. He shot... but now..." The Colonel pulled Edward onto his lap.

"Hggmm," Edward groaned. His eyes were screwed tightly shut, and his body was tense.

"Fullmetal, please, open your eyes? Kid, I'm not going to ask again. It's order! Open your eyes!" Roy's voice broke at the end slightly.

"Mmmm," Edward pried his eyes open and glanced up at his commanding officer. Roy tried to smile down at the kid in assurance that everything was fine, but it wasn't, so all he could give was a worried half smile.

Edward frowned a little at Roy before his eyes rolled back into his head and his body went limp.

"No! Fullmetal! Please, no! Please?!" Mustang never felt so useless. The rain pounded around the two alchemists. Roy pried off one of his uselessly wet gloves and placed his un-gloved hand under the boy's jaw. At first he thought the boy was dead, but then he felt it. A pulse. It was weak but, none the less, there.

There was no way to hide Roy's obvious relief.

"Don't worry, Ed. I'm going to get you to a hospital. I won't let you die," Mustang whispered to his unconscious subordinate

Mustang sat in the room by the unconscious teen. The room was completely silent except for the ever-constant beep of the heart monitor, and Edward's breathing.

A knock at the door made Roy jump, but his gaze remained locked on the fail form in the bed.

"Sir," Hawkeye began stepping into the room. "The doctor confirmed that it was a hallucinogen."

"Do you know who gave it to me?" Mustang frowned.

"No, Sir." Hawkeye answered.

"I'm going to burn whoever it was alive."

"I don't doubt it."

On Roy's face was a deep frown. "Hawkeye, I really thought he was dead."

"You mean after you... or...?" Hawkeye said trying to avoid upsetting the man.

"I mean while I chased him. I thought he was dead, and all I wanted was to get revenge."

Hawkeye looked ready to say something, but stopped short when Edward started groaning from the bed.

"Hmmmm." Edward's flesh fingers twitched slightly. His eyes fluttered open.

"Co- Colonel?" Edward stuttered sleepily. "Wh- what h- hap- happened?"

"Fullmetal, I- Umm, well- I shot you."

"Not exactly." Hawkeye said. "Yes, the Colonel did shoot you, but he was under the influence of a drug that someone slipped him."

Edward's face was hosting a confused expression but was soon coming back to understanding and slight pain.

"W- who gave yo- you the drug?"

"We don't know yet." Was the simple answer the Colonel gave.

"Do y- you have any-" Before Edward could finish his question the door burst open. A very familiar suit of armour stood in the doorway.

"Brother!" Alphonse exclaimed. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Al. T- they must have me on some pretty strong m- meds because I can't even fe- feel it at all." Edward said trying to mask the pain that was there only seconds before.

"Oh, umm, Colonel, I- I don't blame you."

"But I- " Mustang started.

"Ju- just take my forgiveness and go on with your life," Edward scolded, cutting him off.

"Fine," Roy said with a forced smirk.

Just then there was a knock at the door. Everyone turned to look as an older doctor came into the room.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I hope I wasn't interrupting anything." The man said.

"No," Roy answered quickly.

"Good, well, I only came to say that we are expecting that Mr. Elric, with rest, will make a full recovery." The doctor turned to leave, but was stopped by a question.

"When- when will I be released from the hospital?" Edward asked.

"That depends. If you get enough rest you could be out of here in about a week. Any other questions?"

"No."

"Then I'll take my leave. If you have any pain don't hesitate to call a nurse." The doctor left the room.

"So, what exactly happened?" Alphonse asked.

"It was my- "

"Some guy just came out of nowhere and shot me. It was nothing. Don't worry the Colonel is going to get the guy who is responsible." Edward gave the Colonel a knowing look.

"Yeah," Mustang confirmed, standing up and moving to the door with Hawkeye following.

"Oh, and, Fullmetal, rest up. I expect to see you in my office a week from now. Maybe you'll be a little taller" Mustang said with a smirk.

"What? You! I'm going to- "

Roy shut the door on Edward's rant. With the door shut, Mustang's smirk melted into a frown. As he walked down the hospital's halls, Hawkeye at his heels. Gently, he rubbed his finger and thumb together, imagining the man who had caused all of this bursting into flames.

A/N: Thanks for reading! I hope this turned out well. This idea came to me while sitting in a hospital bed so I wrote it. There really wasn't much else to do. If you find a lot of mistakes, I'm sorry.

Please review! I would love to hear what you think!
