Richard "Dick" Simmons was pretty certain that out of all the ways his story could possibly end, this was not one of them. After all, who envisions falling to their death from a platform of moving rock over empty space? Not him even with his absurd anxieties, and he especially didn't imagine his demise would be so close to his new home of Chorus in the slowly rebuilding kingdom of Valla. He'd never apparently realized his fear of moving over yawning chasms in his Deeprealm, for starters.

Suddenly Simmons was regretting his choice of new residence, leaving the Deeprealm he had known all his life. What had he even been thinking, opting to traverse from his childhood home when his own father hadn't even bothered to visit his Deeprealm once after his mother had passed away from illness? He knew nothing of this realm! The redhead knew why Caboose and Carolina had left their Deeprealm, and it wasn't like he'd really had anything going for him in that pocket dimension either once his "caretakers" had decided he wasn't worth the trouble, but still…!

Normally the maroon-wearing man's overly curious mind would be wondering just how the magically floating platform he was currently using as his base of survival worked if he, you know, wasn't thinking of falling to his doom just then. Hunched over the very center of the platform, Simmons clenched his fists and raised his head, glancing at the slowly encroaching land that was his destination.

Nope, not a good idea. His stomach lurched in protest as he clenched his fists even tighter. When the platform suddenly touched the other land, the bumping motion rippled throughout his lanky frame. However, he refused to get up from his crouch on the ground. This was beyond dumb, and all because Caboose had left a memento of Church behind after one of his Valla forays.

The Archer just hadn't been able to get over how crestfallen his friend was, and so Simmons blurted out that he'd retrieve the charm before he fully realized just where the Fighter had left it. Carolina would have been a far better option to come here with her Pegasus mount, who Caboose had affectionately dubbed "Freckles," but she'd gone on patrol with Washington and Tucker earlier and hadn't come back.

"Um. Hey."

Simmons started at the voice that suddenly spoke up before him, surprised to see a heavyset tan-skinned man dressed in the orange garb of a Ninja. The newcomer regarded him from the patch of land his platform was now against, clearly amused. It took Simmons a few seconds to recognize Grif, a man from Hoshido who had recently come to help resettle Valla with his little sister Kai.

"Those things don't stick in one spot for too long." Grif indicated the platform as he spoke, "So are you going to get off, or…?" He trailed off and made a face at his phrasing, "Thank fuck Donut didn't hear that."

At the mention of their cheerful Samurai comrade, and the implications of Grif's words, Simmons' face heated up. He tried covering his reaction up by squeaking out, "Wh—what are you doing out here?"

Grif raised a black eyebrow, gesturing to the valley located behind them, "This just so happens to be a prime napping spot. Duh."

Simmons stared at him incredulously. Sarge, one of the self-proclaimed leaders of their odd team of Chorus settlers dubbed the Reds and Blues, was always complaining about Grif wandering off at crucial moments such as when bandit patrols had to be done. And now Simmons had proof, "You walked all the way out here for a nap?" He asked in disbelief.

"Hardly anyone comes out here." Grif reasoned matter-of-factly.

"Probably because it was so terribly easy to trip and plummet to your death," Simmons thought as he gulped and clenched his fists even tighter, "Maybe it was best not to dwell on it."

"What are you doing out here?" Grif countered, looking smug as he added, "Just enjoying the ride?"

"F—fuck off." Simmons grit his teeth, "Caboose lost something here."

A charm that Church had made for him, claiming it was just to shut the blond up despite how everyone knew Church had cared about the younger man. That charm had been made back before their childhood friend had been killed in a bandit raid in their Deeprealm. Whoever thought that those places were more peaceful and therefore decent spots to dump relatives for "safety" clearly hadn't been paying much attention.

"Caboose, huh?" Grif seemed to be mulling something over, "And you just happened to volunteer to get this item without realizing where it was?"

Simmons' freckled face grew hot in embarrassment at Grif's having hit the mark so well, "I couldn't just…" he began weakly, "Caboose is one of my only friends from my Deeprealm!"

Grif looked intrigued by this bit of information, "Oh? So it's true that you guys are from one of those weird-ass pocket dimensions then?"

He huffed, "They're not…they're not weird!"

"Dude, I hear people just up and abandon their kids in them all the time. And that time moves super-fast in them. Just how aren't they weird?" Simmons said nothing, looking to the ground instead. Dawning realization crossed over Grif's features, "Don't tell me…" he began.

Simmons sighed, "This was a mistake." He'd just let the platform take him back to where he'd gotten on it originally. He could apologize to Caboose and maybe…

"Hold up." Grif held out his hand, a surprisingly serious look on his face, "I'll help you search for it."

Simmons shot him a dubious look, waiting for the other shoe to fall. Then he thought of just where he was and hated that analogy, "Really?"

If this was some joke, then…

"Seriously." Grif assured him, "I like that Caboose guy too."

The chubby man was still holding out his hand as Simmons stared at the offered appendage. Finally, he stood up on shaky legs and reached out… Only for the platform to start moving again with a sudden lurch. The jolt caused Simmons to stagger, his unsure feet propelling him forward. But before the redhead fell completely to his doom, Grif grabbed his arm and pulled him forward the rest of the way. Simmons only had to make a small jump to get to the landmass that Grif was standing on.

Grif was regarding the Archer, and for some reason he hadn't let go of Simmons' hand yet, not that the still weak-kneed Simmons currently minded since that was probably the only thing keeping him upright. Finally, Grif smirked, "You know, I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship."

Grateful for the save and the promise of help in his search, Simmons couldn't help but smile back in response.

"Never mind. I'm taking back what I said about our friendship before." Dexter Grif groaned as he covered his head with the pink blanket he'd procured from Donut's room earlier when the younger soldier hadn't been looking.

Simmons frowned as he stood in the doorway of the storeroom, one of Grif's many hiding spots in Chorus when he couldn't be bothered to walk to his "prime" one. Today happened to be one of those days, given how they'd been tasked with training the younger Lieutenants earlier by Kimball, the leader of Chorus.

"C'mon, Grif," Simmons tried coaxing the other man out from his "hiding" spot, "You know Sarge will just send someone else to get you if you don't come back right now."

"But knowing you, you won't give up anyways because you're such a kiss-ass."

The Archer bristled, "Doing weapons inventory is important!" He exclaimed.

"Which is exactly what a nerd would say." The orange-wearing Ninja muttered, turning his back on the redhead.

Simmons knew that Grif had apathetically lazy moments like this, where he just didn't want to really do anything. His little sister Kai had said that some days were worse than others. He sighed, "How about if I help you?" He tried reasoning.

Grif shrugged his shoulders beneath the wooly blanket, "Or you could just do it all."

The redhead smiled wryly and sat down next to the blanketed lump, their backs nearly touching, "That sort of defeats the purpose of you doing something and avoiding Sarge getting mad at you." How often now had they had conversations like this? Oddly enough, Simmons enjoyed the temporary reprieve they provided. "If I help you," the lanky maroon-wearing man pointed out, "It will go faster."

Grif peered over at him suspiciously, "Meaning?"

"Meaning the sooner you can get back to your nap without anyone bothering you about it." Simmons told him. Hook, line, and sinker.

Grif sat up then, a scrutinizing look on his face, "Huh. You bring up a valid argument." Simmons held his breath for a "however" counter to follow, but he was surprised when none came. Instead, Grif somehow scooted even closer to Simmons so that their noses were nearly touching, "I'll tell you what. I'll do the needlessly boring and mundane task with you," he smirked, "But in turn, you have to do something for me."

Simmons blushed at their sudden closeness, turning his face slightly so that Grif's warm breath tickled his cheek, "Wh—what?"

Grif's grin was a mile wide now, "Take a nap with me afterwards."

Simmons' face and neck turned red. The Archer knew that Grif was just teasing him, expecting him to back down. Simmons defiantly turned his head back in his direction instead, "Deal."

Now it was Grif's turn to have his cheeks darken in a blush, and he blinked his dark eyes in surprise, "Seriously?" He asked, voice oddly suspicious.

"Yeah, if you actually do your share of the work." Simmons stipulated, holding out his hand for the two to shake on it, "Deal?"

"Deal." Grif clasped his hand with his own and the oddly eager look suddenly spreading across his tan-skinned face was enough to cause Simmons' heart to skip a beat.

A Support:

"What the hell was that?"

A still shaking Simmons hadn't yet calmed down from his near-brush with death moments before during the bandit skirmish, so he was completely caught off-guard by Grif grabbing him roughly by the shoulder to spin him around to snarl that question in the Archer's face.

"Wh—what was what?" Simmons shakily demanded in turn, though as the seconds passed he had a fairly good idea as to what the Ninja's outburst was about.

Grif must have seen it on his face too, because he glowered and the redhead was struck with just how strange it was to see Grif get so passionate about anything, "You know damn well what I mean, Simmons." Grif stated point blank, "Pushing me out of the way of that magic attack! What the hell were you thinking?"

The maroon-wearing man blinked, feeling as though he should try and defend himself even as it came out in a lame, "I…I managed to deflect it though." that even Simmons made a disgruntled face over. Besides, Lopez had managed to hit the bandit from behind and end the fight. So all's well that ends well, right? No one had needed to go see Doc or Grey for serious injuries.

"But you could have just as easily not." Grif muttered.

Simmons tried defending himself even more, "B—but you hadn't seen it coming and…!"

"So?" Grif raised an eyebrow, "Why was it a good idea then, for you to be a self-sacrificial idiot?"

"Because that attack would have killed you, Grif!" The freckled Archer tried arguing, not really wanting to think of the horrific mental image that gave him or how his heart positively ached at it, "And you have Kai and—"

"Like you don't have anyone here who would miss you?" Grif demanded in turn, "Just because your dad in Nohr is an asshole, what about us?"

"Carolina and Caboose have each other," Simmons mumbled, always having felt like a third wheel to their adopted family dynamic, "And the others, they'd be fine."

"I wouldn't be." Grif exclaimed, the Ninja's uncharacteristic outburst surprising them both.

"Well, I wouldn't be fine if you got killed either!" Simmons countered back just as emotionally. The two soldiers remained standing there awkwardly for several moments, neither one able to say anything in light of the heavy confessions they'd just made.

At length, Grif sighed, "Look, I appreciate the save, but I'd rather not lose you on account of one. Got it?"

Simmons nodded, "And I'd rather not lose you, Grif."

The two regarded one another for a while longer before Grif smiled, "We'll just have to keep a closer look at one another's backs then to make sure that just doesn't happen."

The heavyset man held out his hand again and Simmons stared at it for a moment before smiling and clasping it with his own, "Deal."

When Grif pulled him in close enough that they were nearly flush against one another, Simmons simply closed his eyes and relished the fact that they were both still around to do so.

"Come on. Eat it."

Simmons warily eyed the bowl of stew being proffered to him, "Why are you so insistent that I eat this, again?"

It wasn't like Grif to share his food with someone else, but the chubby Ninja seemed oddly persistent about it this time. Simmons' eyes narrowed suspiciously. Could this be some kind of prank, or…?

"I know you skipped lunch because you're a workaholic nerd, so I figured I'd make sure you at least had dinner." It might have been his imagination, but Grif seemed strangely nervous about something, "Besides, we're watching each other's backs now, you know?"

The redhead sighed, "Fine." Simmons took the bowl and shoveled a large spoonful into his mouth under Grif's expectant gaze. When nothing happened, he took another bite. Then a third. And then…

"Ow!" Simmons exclaimed as something hard hit his molars. The maroon-wearing Archer quickly pulled out the offending object, green eyes widening at the simple gold band in his hand. "What the fuck…?" Simmons blinked and held the object out for Grif to see, "Is this a ring?"

Grif sheepishly rubbed the back of his head, "Uh, yeah. I guess. How'd that get in there?" He asked rather unconvincingly.

Simmons fixed him with a dubious look.

Grif fidgeted, "Oh, come on, Simmons, you know why it's there."

The pale-skinned redhead's face was already heating up because yeah, he did know. He was just having a hard time processing it.

"We're both settled here in Chorus now and I…" Grif paused, as if mulling over his words, "I want to have your back always, if you'll have mine. No need to make a big fucking deal out of it."

Simmons tried fighting back his tears.

"Dude, are you crying?" Grif looked both terrified and amused all at once.

"Sh—shut up!" Simmons wiped at his eyes with his free hand, the other gripping the ring so tightly that his knuckles turned white, "I…I want to have your back always too."

Grif looked relieved and hopeful, "So that's a yes?"

Simmons surprised them both by leaning over and hugging him, "Of course!"

They remained in an embrace for a few more glorious minutes before Simmons thought of something and pulled away with a frown, "Hold up." He started, "What would you have done if I'd accidentally swallowed the ring instead?"

Grif's response was automatic, "Try not to laugh, only to fail miserably. Obviously, nerd."

Simmons shook his head and smiled fondly, blurting out before he could stop himself, "I love you, dumbass."

"I love you too, kiss-ass."

All in all, the rebuilding of the kingdom of Valla through settlements such as Chorus was going well. As Simmons sat in their shitty storeroom, his hand in Grif's as they watched the sunset together from the window, he couldn't be happier that he was there to witness it. Maybe it was best to dwell on that.

Author's Notes: There you have it, a Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation AU because my brain works in mysterious ways! XD Truth is, I finally finished that game and am eagerly looking forward to the next Fire Emblem title, so I figured this was as good a time as any to write this odd fandom mashup.

The format of the fic is inspired by the short and simple "Support Conversations" that two characters can get into in Fire Emblem Fates: many of which ultimately lead to a "S Support" conversation where the two characters confess their love and someone proposes with a ring. It was fun coming up with the topics for each of Grif and Simmons' conversations leading up to their S Support! :)

Thanks for reading! :D
