Luna Lovegood was comforting one of the second years, giving her a slight hug, and a caring ear. She was homesick already, and talking about it seemed to be making it worse. Luna could see tears weling up in those blue eyes. She looked around, casting about for someone - anyone. There! Justin! Luna waved a cheery haloo, and called out, "Justin!"
The older Hufflepuff strolled over, hurrying a bit more as he saw the young girl nearly in tears. "What's the matter kiddo?" he said genially, with the care that an affable sort always seemed to exude. Luna didn't have anything of that - her moods tended toward the airy and whimsical, and when people were feeling down, it was her instinct to be quiet and let them talk it out. Justin would see this one right as rain, Luna knew. She listened just long enough to hear Justin coaxing a tale about making cookies out of the little girl.
Luna smothered an icicle smile. Within an hour, the house would be full of cookies (chocolate chip if she didn't miss her guess). And that would do far more than cheer up one lost child.
Who didn't like cookies?
Dennis and Colin were looking stircrazy - Luna knew the look - boys who couldn't sit still, because to sit still was to think, and thinking would bring them down. Luna leaned in to them, where they were seated on a loveseat together. "Boys," she said in a whisper, "I heard a lovely rumor that this place has secret passages. Would you like to look for them?"
Dennis' eyes shot up to hers, and Colin's were a second later. They were both alight with excitement. "Would we!?"
Luna seemed thoughtful, "I only have one favor to ask..."
"Name it!" Colin's cheerful voice said.
"There are a few... excitable children about. Can you enlist them in your adventures?" Luna smiled.
"We'd be delighted," Dennis said, his voice oozing with all the hauteur that Malfoy generally exuded - without the drawl, so it couldn't be seen as mocking.
"Thank you," Luna said, hearing the front door open. That would be Draco, Luna thought, excited. We'll see what aid he's managed to scare up.
Luna greeted Draco at the door, stepping outside with him, rather than risk bad news with volatile children about. "What's happened?"
"My mother is a fiendish genius. At one stroke, she's outwitted Dumbledore, myself, the Dark Lord, and all of high society." Draco Malfoy said, his voice cold as ash.
"Is that a good thing?" Luna inquired, with a chilly air that she dared not use near Gryffindors. They always thought lack of visible emotion equaled not caring.
Draco Malfoy smiled, a thin quirk of his lips, but his grey eyes danced like paired swords in firelight. "Yes. My mother will shortly be bringing Blood Adoption back into common usage."
Luna blinked, slowly, and then smiled, her teeth flashing. "Oh, that is delicious!"
Draco Malfoy nodded, slowly, "We'll need to find a sister for me, of course."
Luna nodded, "She can hardly start a fashion without being a trendsetter."
Draco Malfoy said, "We'll need to find someone who will show well."
Luna tittered, "Why does it sound like you're talking about bitches?"
Draco Malfoy responded, "Because she'll need to carry the entire idea. Bright, sharp, mannerly enough. Subtle when needed. Loyalty unnecessary, but perhaps useful."
Luna nodded, "You'll find a few to choose from, with that high burden."
Draco Malfoy nodded, "I know. But first, we'd better be about teaching them pigshit."
Luna smiled, "These are mainly cityfolk, aren't they?"
Draco smiled, "Good thing I know how to milk a cow, isn't it?"
Luna's eyes asked a question.
Draco smiled, "My mother has always fancied a good fresh glass of syllabub."
