RIGHT AND LAW

Job 9: Out Of Sight

Sly runs up to Bentley's cell with the keys in hand. "Got any ideas about getting at those robots?"

"That I do," Bentley says with a grin. "I'll contact the others while you crack those combination locks."

It's a double-handed lock again. Sly plays through solving it, slowly feeling the way both knobs turn, and when he's done the screen changes.

Carmelita's lifted out of the theater, onto a nearby rooftop. Murray's waiting there. Before Carmelita's untangled from the rope, Murray sweeps her up in a hug.

"Murray," Carmelita gasps out, "I... need... air..."

Murray doesn't seem to hear. At least, not until Bentley clears his throat over the com system. "If you two are finished, I've got a job for you."

Murray sets Carmelita down. "Uh, sorry."

Carmelita gasps for breath and waves a hand. "It's fine," she says, when she can speak, and pulls out her binoc-u-com. "What's going on?"

"Sly got us some info," Bentley says. "The finished robots are being kept in the same room as Dr. Foxworthy's time machine. No one knows where that is, exactly, but he checks on them every time an alarm goes off."

Murray pounds one fist into the other hand. "You want us to set one off?"

"I want you to set them all off," Bentley says, an evil glint on his glasses. "Sly's almost got the cell door open. It'll be easier for us to get to the surface with a distraction."

"I've never done that before," Carmelita admits. "Usually, my job is to figure out the problem." She pauses and tugs at her collar, her badge swinging. "What, um, what do you need me to do?"

"Using Penelope's earlier surveillance, I've located five alarm systems scattered around the area." As Bentley speaks, waypoints appear. "I've also marked Dr. Foxworthy with a waypoint; P-Penelope, you can keep tabs on that. Now. The alarms are way too far away for any of you to reach, so Carmelita, you're going to have to shoot them to make them go off. When guards come to investigate, Murray, you take them out. If no one radios in with a report for long enough, Dr. Foxworthy himself is sure to check it out—and we don't want him to know we're there, so when Penelope says he's coming, you need to clear out."

"Sounds easy enough," says Carmelita.

"I won't let you down, Bentley," Penelope adds. "I promise. Carmelita and Murray'll be safe this time."

"It's time to CRACK some SKULLS!" Murray shouts.

Everyone puts away their binoc-u-coms, and play takes over as Carmelita. The nearest alarm is on the wall on the other side of the bridge, but directly in the middle of an unmoving spotlight. The best way to get a shot at it means standing on a roof a good distance away and using Otto's aiming goggles to line up the shot. "You ready, Murray?"

"I was born ready!" Murray says, waving at her from the ground below.

With that, Carmelita fires. And it hits. And then the dang thing starts MOVING.

It's plain as Dimitri's fashion sense the thing has to be hit more than once before it'll go off, but now Carmelita's got a challenge on her hands.

Sort of. I mean, it is Carmelita.

Two shots later, the alarm is sounding and play switches to Murray. "You're up, big guy," Carmelita says. "I'll keep an eye on things here, in case you need back-up."

"The Murray never needs back-up!" Murray says. "But it makes him happy anyway."

That's all he has time for before the first guards run up. There are no big, brawny flashlight guards here—every guard is a former cop, but they also all go down in two punches.

"No sign of Dr. Foxworthy yet," says Penelope.

Murray lets himself enjoy an all-out brawl, cracking skulls left and right as he puts the smackdown on these bad dudes for justice.

"I see him!" Penelope says. "He's headed your way, Murray. Get out of there!"

Murray knocks out the last guard and runs away as play switches back to Carmelita. "Head to the next alarm," says Penelope. "Sly, Bentley, how are you doing?"

The answer is a crackle of static, without any coherent words, but it manages to sound cheerful anyway.

The next target, naturally, is across the entire area, about as far away from the first one as it possibly could be. It's practically in the moat. This is a very slight problem, because it means she has to use the lob shot.

Carmelita's aiming skills with the lob shot still aren't the best. Granted, all her other shooting skills are on the 'This really shouldn't be possible' level, so saying her skills with the lob shot aren't as good as the rest just means she can actually miss. Which she does. Twice.

Murray stands below, waving encouragingly, but Penelope is totally snickering at her over the maskpiece. "You need to hurry and set that off," Penelope says. "Dr. Foxworthy's reached the site of the first alarm, and he's almost done looking around. We may lose him if you don't hit it soon."

Carmelita's landed one shot, and now has to deal with the dang thing moving. "Just give me one more second," she mutters, and nails it.

Murray pumps his fists in the air and cheers as guards, er, police officers pour out of the nearby buildings. He LIVES for this stuff.

He doesn't live for Penelope in his ear, saying "Dr. Foxworthy's not moving. He's not... okay, he's moving in your direction. He hasn't gotten past the center of the volcano. He hasn't... he's passing the volcano. Get out of there!"

Darn. Murray was just starting to have a good time. Though he did get a good dozen wallets out of it.

Play swaps over to Carmelita again, and she tries again to contact Sly and Bentley. "How are you two doing?"

"Oh, just great," Bentley mutters. "Terrific. This is just swell."

Sly sighs. "Look, your chair wouldn't fit under the table, and you know as well as I do that—"

"Oh, please don't tell me they're going to have coffee on us."

All right then. It sounds like things are going... well, they're going. Sort of. But Carmelita has another shooting challenge to do.

Play continues like this for the rest of the alarms. As Murray punches out bad guys and roars his fury at the last alarm, by the volcano's mouth, a manhole cover slides back near one of the houses. Sly emerges, then reaches down and drags Bentley up, chair and all. The two of them jump to a nearby rooftop while Murray continues to fight. Carmelita joins them there.

"Dr. Foxworthy's on his way," says Penelope. "Clear out!"

And Murray does. Right onto the rooftop where his friends await. Where he proceeds to wrap the others in one giant, bone-crushing hug. All three of them.
