Chapter 4: Traffic Case 2
A/N: Hello! I hoped you like the filler! I'm back with more LA Noire! I may not write more L4D for a bit. I'm just feeling the LA Noire thing a bit more than I am L4D at the moment. So yeah, here's more! ~AR
Evie was still mulling over the date she had with Stefan. She was going to see him today. They did have work after all. He was still tagging along with them. She didn't understand why. They didn't need three detectives. Unless...Unless the department only saw her as incapable. She was a woman after all. She was scrutinized over it. She hated it. She hated the fact that she was seen as less because of her gender. She still got sneers and people whispering about her. It was very irritating. Arriving at the station, she inhaled. Okay she could do this. She was going to try and ignore Cole as much as possible.
"Evie! There you are good morning," she head. She turned around to see Stefan. Had he been...Waiting for her? She smiled gently at him.
"Good morning, Stefan," Evie said. He held out his elbow to her and she took it. He led her up to where the briefing room was and she sat next to him. That's when Cole entered the room and took a seat. He nodded to Stefan, but ignored her. Okay, that was good. She hoped that he continued to ignore her for now. She didn't want to deal with any attitude he was going to give her. That's when the captain came in.
"There was a car found in the backyard of a Mr. Jacobs house. Detectives go check it out," he said pointing to Stefan, Cole, and I. We got up and headed out. We knew there was no arguing with the captain. We got into the car. I sat in the back as Cole sat in the front with Stefan. Evie wasn't going to say a word to Cole unless it was work related. Yes, Evie was fuming over him interrupting her night out on the town.
"So Cole, how'd the rest of your evening go," Stefan said.
"It went fine thank you," Cole said to him. Stefan glanced back at her. He then glanced at Cole.
"So Evie, any plans for tonight?" Stefan asked her to obviously make her feel included.
"No Stefan, I was thinking of staying in," she said to him.
"Always a fun thing to do. Could go to a movie," Stefan said to her as if hinting.
"I'll consider it," she replied softly smiling. She appreciated Stefan right now more than ever for making her feel included.
"If you could go what movie would you see?" Cole asked her. Oh now Mr. War Hero wanted to talk to her. Evie just kept on a smile. She made sure to pretend she wasn't annoyed at his behavior. It was childish. Maybe she was being childish, too. Was she? She wasn't sure. If she was, did she even have a right to be selfish?
"I'm not too picky," Evie said to Cole.
"There's a new picture out," Stefan said.
"Then, I would consider seeing that," she said to Stefan. He had saved her. She wasn't sure what picture it was, but that didn't matter. She was just going to lay on the bull shit. She had to at this was nothing else she could do. She was stuck working a case with him.
"So, big coincidence about how we ended up together last night," Stefan said bringing up last night. Great, now she had to face it.
"Yeah, pretty big coincidence. Speaking of which...Stefan how did you end up with Evie?" Cole said. What did it matter? Stefan and her were both single. He wasn't!
"Was in the area and happened to see her coming out of her house. Offered to take her out when she said she was going out to Hollywood," Stefan said.
"That's fair. Can't let a lady be by herself. Especially at night," Cole replied to Stefan. Evie glanced out the window. How was this car ride so long? It felt like it was going on forever. Evie could only really force a smile. She knew that things were going to be tense. Why had she expected anything less?
"Guys, can we please just go about our day? We have a case to work," Evie said to them. They both nodded. They arrived at the scene and were directed to the car. There was a crotchety looking old man on the porch. She assessed the scene. They would need to work the crime scene and see what they could manage to find.
"You get the old guy Cole, I'll work the scene," she said. He frowned but then did what she. She wanted to be alone. Stefan tried to follow after her but she waved him to follow after Cole. Stefan looked like he wanted to say something but didn't. Instead he followed after Cole. She quickly worked the scene and got the notes she needed. A license plate that looked like diplo plates interesting she'd have to get that called in and a missing flag was a big sign that something wasn't right. A diplomatic car. Interesting.
How did a diplo car end up here? She found the wrenches and noticed it said DEWY BROS. on them. That would be a location to find out. Also examining inside the car she found out that it belonged to the Argentinian embassy. Interesting. REAL interesting. She quickly took notes and saw the boys were done. They waved her over and told her what they had found out. She in exchange went over her notes. Stefan said he'd make the call and went over to the nearest phone. It was just her and Cole.
"Look Evie..," Cole began.
"Cole, I-I don't know where to begin," Evie said to him.
"I just wanted to apologize for my erratic behavior. It was wrong of me to interrupt like I did last night," Cole said to her.
"It's fine. I think it's best we only ever see each other at work," Evie said firmly.
"I agree," he said. With that, they had settled things. However, she couldn't understand why she felt a little sad. She would get over it. Soon, Stefan had come back with information for them. He told them and Evie nodded. She was glad that Cole and her had sorted it all out. She was just going to focus on this case alongside Stefan. They had gotten an address for where they needed to go next: Dewey Bros. Dealership.
"Hey, I'll catch a ride with a patrolman. I need to do something back at the station. I'll meet you two over there," Cole said to Stefan and Evie. Stefan raised an eyebrow and the two went off. Evie sat in the front and they proceeded to head to the car dealership.
"Why did Cole do that?" he asked.
"I don't know Stefan," Evie said lying. She knew. She wasn't going to say. She wasn't going to let Stefan know about her and Cole's little talk. She didn't want to let him know that they had settled it.
"It's interesting," he said.
"Indeed it is," Evie said. She felt bad about lying to him. But, it was the only thing she could do right now. She needed to figure out what to do. How to tell Stefan the truth. She cared about him. Evie and Stefan arrived at the dealership and Cole arrived in a police car. Together, they went up to where Dewey was.
"I'll stick to interrogating. See if you can find anything," Stefan said to Cole.
""Where do you want me?" Evie said.
"The car," they both said. Great. Evie wasn't going to be "useful" here apparently.
"Fine," Evie said stiffly. She waited until she was out of their sight and began to take a walk. She wasn't going to deal with this right now. She wasn't sure why they were acting like this. Probably because they felt they could get more done without her there.
That's when she saw a man in a red car with the top down in a suit that made him look like he was made of money.
"Woah slow down there sweetheart," the man said. Evie looked at him. Sweetheart? What the hell was wrong with men in this town?
"I have a name, sir," Evie said stiffly to him.
"And so do I, Roy Earle...Vice Detective. I know exactly who you are...Evie O'Hara. Senator O'Hara's daughter. We met once...At a party your father threw," he said. She didn't remember him clearly, he remembered her though. She kept a straight face.
"Well, it's nice to meet you Mr. Earle. But I must be going," Evie said, remembering to be polite.
"No, no. I'm not done with you Evie. Sit in the car," he said in that polite way of you have to do this or there's going to be consequences.
"Fine, Mr. Earle. What do you want?" Evie said getting into the car. She already knew there was going to be issues.
"Please call me Roy, doll. All I want to do is take you out to dinner tonight. Nothing else," Roy said.
"Mr. Earle. I'm a bit busy," she replied.
"Clearly not," Roy said to her.
"I'll consider it," Evie said getting out of the car immediately. She was extremely uncomfortable right now. With that, she made her way back to the dealership. There she saw Stefan and Cole frantically looking for something. Stefan was the first to see her.
"There you are! Told you to stay in the car," Stefan said.
"Listen here Stefan. I'm not just some porcelain doll to sit around waiting. I'm a goddamn police detective, too. Until you can both learn some goddamn respect. I'm going to the station," she said.
"Evie! Wait!" she heard Stefan call after her. However, Evie was fuming. She hailed a taxi and got to the station. Paying the driver, she headed into the station. The Captain saw her come in.
"Aren't you working a case detective?" he asked her.
"Yes, I am. From here. They don't need me. You know what they told me captain? To stay in the car," she said. The captain went silent for a second and decided not to say anything else. Evie went up to the Traffic department's desks. She had paperwork to do. She wasn't going to let them get to her. Time seemed to pass, because the next thing she knew Stefan and Cole were back. They sounded like they were in a heated debate over the case.
"Guess it's time for me to head home," she said to herself. Getting her things she started to head out, however, Stefan was at the door.
"Evie, will you please listen to me?" Stefan said.
"And why should I Stefan? You're just another man trying to assert his power over me and treat me like I'm some kind of doll," Evie said.
"It's not like that," Stefan said.
"Clearly," Evie said coldly.
"Fine. You know what. Whatever. You go home Evie. Have a great evening," Stefan said. With that, Evie left. She left the police station and that's when she saw Roy Earle again. Disgusting.
"There you are. Come on dinner," he said to her.
"Look, Roy, I don't have time for this," she said.
"You clearly do," Roy said.
"You know this guy?" she heard Stefan ask.
"No, I don't. He knows me apparently though," Evie said. Although she was mad at him. Stefan appearing when he did made Evie grateful.
"Move along detective. Nothing to see here," Roy said.
"She clearly wants nothing to do with you pal, so you move along," Stefan said firmly.
"I just wanna take the broad out to dinner. You understand right?" Roy said as if trying to reason with Stefan.
"Come on Evie," Stefan said, taking her hand. She didn't resist. With one last glare at Roy the two left. She was glad to be out of there. Once they were out of earshot and into Stefan's car. Evie felt safer.
"Thank you," she said. All the anger she had at Stefan was gone. He had made sure to keep Roy away from her. She was just glad that even if they did have a bit of a fight, he still would protect her.
"Evie I just wanna say-," Stefan said and that's all he got out before Evie impulsively kissed him. He soon returned the kiss. They broke apart and Evie turned a bright shade of red.
"You're forgiven," Evie said sheepishly. Stefan started the car and proceeded to head to her house.
"That was nice," he said to her.
"A little impulsive not going to lie," Evie replied.
"Well, I quite enjoyed it," Stefan said.
"Me, too," Evie said. The rest of the conversation was small talk. Arriving at her house, Stefan cleared his throat.
"We will talk to the diplomat tomorrow as well. We're also getting the thieves tomorrow. I'd love to have you there," Stefan said.
"I'll be there," Evie said. Getting out of the car she noticed that Roy Earle had been following them. She remembered his flashy red car very well. She opened Stefan's door.
"Why don't you come in," Evie said. Stefan didn't protest and went inside Evie's house. She didn't even glance back at Roy. He could think whatever he wanted.
"I saw his car. He followed us," Evie said once they were inside.
"Do you want me to stay then?" Stefan said.
"If you'd like," Evie said.
"I think I will then," Stefan said. Evie smiled at him. She opened up her fridge. She didn't have much to eat.
"I don't have much in the way of food," she said.
"Let's go to the store then," he said. Together, they went to the store. They got steak, potatoes, and Stefan picked up beer. She paid for it and they went back. Stefan made the steaks and Evie did the best fries that she could. They came out decent (or so in her opinion). They sat at her table and had steak, fries, and beer.
Cleaning up, Evie and Stefan found themselves in the living room again.
"The fries were good," he said.
"Thanks," Evie said. Stefan leaned over and kissed her again. Evie found herself kissing him back. She couldn't help herself. He stopped kissing her, got off the couch, and held out his hand. She took it and he easily found her bedroom. Soon they were on her bed and he was removing her clothes. She didn't stop him. She didn't want to. Soon they were both naked and he was kissing her body all over.
Before she knew it the morning was here, and she was naked in bed with Stefan. She did sleep with him and she wasn't ashamed of it. She had enjoyed it. They were both consenting adults and things like this happened. Evie was the first to get out of bed and headed to the shower. She quickly showered and got dressed. In an actual dress this time. It was a turquoise color and in the latest style. She styled her hair in a braided ponytail. She was keeping it simple. Soon, Stefan was up.
"Morning beautiful," he said to her. She smiled at him. It was nice to have someone call her that again. She was sure that Roy hadn't stuck around given she hadn't seen him when they went out to get dinner. She couldn't imagine why he wanted to take her out to dinner. She didn't even fully know him.
"Good morning Stefan," Evelyn replied to him.
"Sleep well?" he asked her.
"Quite well. You?" she said with a flirtatious smile on her face.
"I'd say quite well," he said leaning down to kiss her. She let him shower and then sent him on his way to get changed. They had time before they had to go to work. Evie cleaned up her house since she really didn't get to do that with Stefan here. Once she saw it was time to go, she headed to the bus stop. Roy was there.
"Don't you have something to do?" Evelyn asked.
"I'm not going away until you say yes," he said.
"Fine. Whatever, I'll go to dinner with you Roy. Just leave me alone," Evie to him.
"That's my girl. I'll pick you up after work," he said. With that, he drove away. She rode the bus to work and got there on time. She saw Stefan was there. He had changed obviously. Cole glanced between the two and cleared his throat.
"So today we're going to talk to the diplomat," Cole said.
"I know," Evie said to him. It was a little cold, but she was still mad at Cole. She might not be mad at Stefan, but she could be mad at him for being a big jerk.
"There's also the thieves. Cole, you and Evie talk to the diplomat, I'll find out information about our thieves," Stefan said. With that, they had their tasks. Cole and Evie headed into the interrogation room. Cole was grilling him a bit hard. Evie was ignored by the diplomat as if she wasn't in the room. They got the information they needed and then headed out of the room.
"Well, that was disgusting," Evie said referring to the fact the diplomat preferred younger boys. Why would anyone do that to children? She felt disgust in her stomach.
"Agreed," he said.
"Where's Stefan?" Evie said.
"Probably upstairs," Cole said. She and Cole headed upstairs and then found Stefan waiting for them. Both of them exchanged information. So, they headed to where the thieves were and made the arrest. Once they had the arrest, they headed back to the station. It was a sure conviction. Evie did her part of the paperwork and then the day flew by.
"Evie wait," Cole said to her.
"What is it Cole?" Evie asked.
"I know you're still mad at me for what happened, I just wanted to say I'm sorry," he said to her. She smiled at him softly.
"You're forgiven," Evie said to him.
"Look I was wondering if-," Cole said as there was a throat clearing behind them. It was Roy Earle. Great. He was here.
"Wonder if she was what, Detective Phelps?" Roy said to him.
"If I had anything to add to his paperwork," she said to him glaring at Roy.
"Thanks for the feedback Evie," Cole said getting the hint. He could tell Evie wasn't happy to see Roy.
"Come on," Roy said to her. Evie glanced at Cole apologetically and then followed after Roy.
"Would've preferred you dolled up, but this will do," Roy said to her. They drove and eventually reached the restaurant where Cohen was known to hang out at. Getting out of the car she followed after Roy.
"Where's Cohen?" he asked the host.
"There isn't going to be trouble is there?" he asked.
"No. Now take the lady and I to the table," Roy said. They were led to where Mickey Cohen was waiting.
"Thank you, Roy. Take a seat Miss. O'Hara," Cohen said to her.
"What do you want Cohen?" Evie asked stiffly.
"I said, take a seat," he said. Evie did hesitantly. What could Cohen want with her? She knew he was more familiar with her dad but Cohen wanted to talk to her? It was...Absurd.
"Want anything, Miss O'Hara?" Cohen asked her. She shook her head. She wasn't going to accept anything from him. She refused to.
"Look your dad isn't taking my calls and he needs to. There's a problem that's going to be his if he doesn't," Cohen said to me.
"And what makes you think I'll pass the message on?" Evie said.
"We could always strongarm your little boyfriend in the police," he said.
"He's not my boyfriend," Evie said.
"Right that's why he stayed over at your place and practically snuck out," Cohen said.
"Cohen, I'm a full grown woman and I can do as I want," Evie said.
"Right. Pretty sure daddy wouldn't be happy his little princess has boys coming over especially since she isn't married yet," Cohen said.
"And I'm okay with not being married right now. I'm a woman who is wanting to make her mark in the world by helping others," Evie said.
"You could marry Roy and be set for life sweetheart, but that's here nor there considering I can tell you don't even like Roy here," he said.
"Nor am I fond of you," Evie said bluntly.
"I'm not trying to marry you, but that's not what I came here to talk about," he said.
"I know, you want me to pass on a message to my dad. I'm aware," she said.
"Right. So do that. Thanks," Cohen said, dismissing her.
"Fine. Whatever Cohen," Evie said bluntly. She was annoyed at this prick who thought he could push her around. She looked at Roy.
"Take me home. Now," Evie said shortly.
"As you wish, princess," Roy said. Evie wanted to deck this asshole in the face right now. However, she was just going to get out of here. Roy took her home as promised. He tried to make small talk, but Evie had tuned him out. She didn't want to deal with him.
Once she arrived at home, she saw that it was empty. That was good. She didn't want Cole or Stephan to show up. That would make her probably a little more angry. She just wanted to be alone. She headed inside and made a phone call to her dad and quickly told him what had transpired with Cohen. He sounded angry and promised to take care of it.
Evie heard a knock on her door after she got off the phone with her dad, and there waiting was Cole. She let him in.
"Hi Cole," Evie said, taking him into her living room.
"Hi Evie. Everything okay?" he asked her.
"Yeah, just peachy. I had a bit of an issue with an asshole, but it won't be a problem anymore," Evie said.
"Ah, I'm glad to hear. I just wanted to check up on you since I got the hint that you didn't want to be around Roy," he said.
"Not at all. I don't like him," she said.
"That was very obvious," he said.
"Thank you for checking on me Cole, Evie said to him sincerely appreciating it. However, she was sure that his wife and daughters were wondering where he was.
"You're welcome, Evie. Have a good night," he said to her. With that, Evie was left alone and for once she was glad.
A/N: Wow! This took me forever to finish. I am so sorry! I hope you enjoy this chapter. I'm in the process of writing another one, so I should be updating this story again at some point! ~AR
