Overwatch: The Samurai
Chapter Nine: Meet the Crew Part Four: The Tricksters Part Two
The drop ship flew over Mexico, heading towards its new destination, as the agents were plotting their new strategy. While they were planning, Mercy looked over to see Spider standing near the window, looking at the farmlands below with a grim expression. Worried, Mercy walked over to him, hoping to find out what was ailing him.
"Arthur?"
Spider turned to her and smiled.
"Hey there, Doc." He greeted, tipping his hat.
"How do you feel?" Mercy asked.
"Been better, but I'm alright." Spider nodded. "Though I missed seeing that pretty face of yours."
"Oh, Arthur," Mercy chuckled, standing next to him. "If it helps, I missed you too."
The two stood in silence for a solid minute, before Mercy spoke up.
"So, what have you been up to lately?"
"Same thing I always do." Spider shrugged. "Taking the occasional odd job here and there, trying to survive." He turned his head to her. "You?"
"I've been doing well." Mercy said. "Just trying to help people as best I can."
"Never change, Angela." Spider chuckled. "Helping others suit you."
Before Mercy could continue, they could feel the airship descend, meaning they have arrived at their destination. Before Mercy could say anything else, Spider closed in and smoothly pecked her on the cheek.
"We'll talk more later." He smirked, winking, making Mercy blush.
After the airship landed, the team stepped out and hid in the shrubbery, just inches from the Los Muertos base, with some Talon soldiers patrolling outside.
"Looks like they've got the place locked down." Lucio remarked. "Doesn't look like they're expecting anything."
"This is supposed to be one of the least active bases in the most boring part of Mexico." Spider answered. "Of course they weren't expecting much action."
"Still, it is adequately guarded." Zarya spoke up. "How do we get in?"
"Already got a plan in mind." Spider smirked, turning his head to Jet. "Jet, I need you to get your people into position, ready to strike. I'm gonna infiltrate the base and see if I can't get our defector out without raising suspicion. If things go wrong, I'll contact you to strike."
"Are you sure about that?" Mercy asked, worried. "What if you get caught?"
"I won't." Spider smirked, tipping his hat. "You forget, sweetheart, that I'm a master of disguise."
And with that, after making sure no guards were looking, Spider marched out of the bushes, transforming into a Talon disguise as he walked, appearing as a high ranking Talon officer, getting past security and casually walking inside.
"Alright, everyone, here's the plan," Jet declared not-so-loudly. "We strike from all four sides. Pharah and Brian will take the north side, Zarya, Sarge and Lucio will take the west side, Cole and the Junkers will take the east side, and Mercy, Shadow, Brigitte and I will take the south side. We wait for Spiders signal to strike."
The plan set, the given teams split up to get in position.
Inside the base, in disguise, Spider made his way through the halls, passing by several scientists and ignoring some of the soldiers who greeted him. He continued onward, he entered the camera room and typed in several keys, switching from several camera screens, before settling on what he was looking for; a certain hacker, sitting on a bed in a room, a leg over the other, arms crossed, sitting as if waiting for something.
"Found you."
Smirking, he shut off the cameras, but as soon as he exited the room, he was approached by another high ranking Talon officer and a grunt.
"Who the hell are you?" He demanded. "And who sent you?"
"Uh…Reaper sent me." Spider worked up a lie. "Said he wanted things to buckle down over here."
"What the hell is Reaper on about?" The officer grunted. "Nothing's going on over here!"
"Don't you think it's a bad idea to question Reaper?" Spider asked. "He wouldn't be happy knowing that the underlings are complaining now, would he?"
The officer grumbled, before turning and leaving, the grunt following close behind. Once they were out of sight, Spider pressed a finger against his earpiece.
"Jet, I almost got made." He whispered. "Think you guys can give me some breathing room?"
"We're on it."
Letting out a sigh of relief, Spider waited for the distraction.
After informing the strike teams, Jet made the first move, dashing forward, with Shadow, Brigitte and Mercy close behind. The Talon soldiers opened fire, Jet deflecting the bullets with his sword, Brigitte blocking with her shield, Shadow dodging with his speed, while Mercy kept close behind to heal her comrades just in case. As they got closer, Jet jumped at swung his sword, easily slicing the Talon trooper in half, before proceeding to cut him into little pieces, Brigitte smacked another Talon Trooper in the face with her rocket flail, crushing his skull, while Shadow blew several other troops away with his Chaos Blast ability.
On the north side, Pharah fired her rockets at the Talon soldiers, while Brian provided sniper fire from afar.
On the west side, Zarya and Sarge let out a war cry, running and gunning down Talon troop, while Lucio used his sonic amplifier to boost his friends speed, while blasting the enemies back with sound waves.
On the east side, Cole and the Junkers opened fire, blowing up several Talon troops and automated turrets.
The four teams fought through waves of Talon troops, before finally making it to the entrances.
Inside, Spider watched as the Talon troops scrambled to meet the Overwatch agents in combat. Using the confusion to his advantage, he snuck past some of the lesser secured areas of the base, ending up in the prison section.
"Almost there." Spider said to himself. "Just gotta make it through here."
"Hey, you there!"
Spider turned to see what looked like a young boy, about the same age as Efi, with pale skin and short black hair, with dark blue eyes looking at Spider pleadingly.
"Hey, you're not with those Talon fuckers, right?" He asked.
Spider was silently surprised by the foul language by someone so young. He even questioned if he was a young boy at all.
"And you are…?" Spider asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
"Karma, and I used to be in Overwatch!" The boy(?) declared proudly. "If you're not with these Talon creeps, then you've gotta let me out!"
Spider didn't seem convinced however. Anyone can simply claim to formerly be with Overwatch. And after Overwatch's collapse, it's hard to trust anyone these days.
"And why should I trust you?" He asked, crossing his arms.
"Just ask Jack or Ana, they could vouch for me!" The Karma boy protested.
Spider could only wonder what the boy said. Did he know Jack and Ana personally? After a bit of thought, he sighed.
"Alright, fine." He said. "Just give me a sec and I'll let you loose."
With that, he smashed the lock, sending the bars wide open, releasing the boy, who stepped out.
"Ahhh, sweet freedom!" He let out a blissful sigh.
Suddenly, the two heard fast sounding footsteps, no doubt Talon troops. Before Spider could make a move, Karma stepped in front.
"Hold up. Watch this."
With a snap of his fingers, the world around him and Spider shifted a bit.
Two Talon troopers entered the room, but instead of attacking, they rushed right past Spider and Karma, as if they weren't even there. After the Talon soldiers left the room, Karma snapped his fingers again, returning the world to its normal state.
"What was that?" Spider asked, confused.
"It's hard to explain," Karma said, his hands behind his back. "But I can manipulate other peoples cognitions; their perception on reality."
"Like what you did with those Talon troops there?" Spider said. "You made it seem like we weren't even there?"
"Basically, I made it seem like what they wanted to see." Karma explained. "For example, those guards were expecting me to be locked up and no one else in the room, so I made it seem that way."
"Sounds like a useful ability." Spider admitted. "Though it must be tiring."
"You're tellin' me." Karma snorted, placing his hands on his hips. "Trying to keep two people invisible, plus me, is more than enough to give me a nosebleed."
Moving over to a nearby chest and taking out some equipment, he changed into a black and blue uniform, with a white dagger and slingshot strapped to his side.
"Now, what can I help you with?" He smirked, stretching his limbs. "You're obviously here for a reason."
"Well, there's someone I'm after," Spider admitted, before explaining his plan.
After the explanation, the two made their way down several more halls, avoiding passing Talon patrols, until they arrived at a decorated purple door. Spider knocked once and it opened, revealing the defector.
"About time you showed up, pendejo." She snickered, rising from her bed.
The teams fought their way through several more waves of Talon troops before managing to regroup in the main entrance of the base.
"So, we fought our way into the base." Cole declared, reloading his weapons. "Now what?"
"Now, we wait for Spider." Jet declared. "Hopefully, he won't take long."
"Right you are, pal."
They turned to see Spider approach from the stairs, with Karma following him, much to the confusion of the others, but before anyone could inquire who he was, much to their shock, Sombra herself walked down the stairs, with a cocky smirk on her face.
"What the hell is she doing here?" Pharah growled, reaching for her rocket launcher.
"Relax, will ya?" Spider raised a hand, gesturing everyone to remain calm. "She's the defector I was telling you about."
"She's the defector?" Cole said with a raised brow. "Isn't she one of Talon's inner council or something?"
"Please, those cabrona's wouldn't trust me with a ten foot pole." Sombra scoffed, approaching them. "Besides, you seem to be doing much better this time around."
"So you're only defecting to the winning team?" Brian growled, gripping his rifle.
"It's more than that, ghost boy." Sombra frowned. "I found some things that gave me a whole new image of Talon."
"Which was?" Zarya said, still cautious.
"They were doing experiments on people." Sombra explained, a grim expression on her face. "Kidnapping people to create monsters of war. Replacing limbs and melting insides, turning humans into cyborgs, even hacking into Omnics to make them more destructive." She then shuddered. "I never thought Talon would sink so low."
"Never saw you as 'woman of the people', Sombra." Pharah remarked, hands on her hips. "But why defect to us?"
"Do you see anyone else willing to stand up to Talon?" Sombra asked sarcastically. "As far as I know, Overwatch is the only organization willing to take the fight to those bullies."
"Well, we do have a common enemy." Jet mused. "Not to mention we could use a talented hacker on the team."
"You see?" Sombra smirked. "I help you with my hacking skills, Overwatch benefits from it, everyone's happy."
"We'll see." Zarya growled.
"By the way, who's the kid?" Lucio asked, pointing at Karma.
"Him? That's Karma." Spider shrugged. "Apparently, he claims to know Ana and Jack."
"It's true!" Karma pouted. "They can easily vouch for me!"
"His ability is pretty unique." Spider revealed. "Looks like he can manipulate folk's perception on reality…or something like that."
"Cognitive manipulation?" Mercy spoke, confusion in her voice. "I've heard of elemental manipulation, like fire, water and so on. But this 'cognitive manipulation' is something else entirely."
"It helped a lot in the past!" Karma declared proudly. "It's fooled our enemies and gave Overwatch a huge advantage!"
"Well, we could certainly use that kind of power on the team." Jet admitted, rubbing a finger against his chin, before turning to Sombra. "But how do we know we can simply trust you? We barely know anything about you."
"I'd say the same thing about you, yet here we are." The Latino hacker countered. "Tell you what; once we get back to the base of your operations, we can talk things out. Once I've given all I can give, you can decide if I'm worth the trouble."
Jet looked to his teammates, some of them seemed okay with having Sombra on the team, though others like Pharah, Brian and Zarya seemed a bit cautious about it. Jet wasn't too sure himself, given that he work with Sombra one time in the past, before discovering that she was working for Talon. He doubted she could be trusted.
However, whatever human experimentation she found in Talon's databases must have truly disturbed her. Not to mention that she is talented with her hacking skills, and if Overwatch was to have any hope of taking down Talon, they needed all the help they could get.
Even if it's help from someone like Sombra.
"Very well." Jet nodded. "Once we return to base, we'll see if you deserve a place among us."
"Glad to hear it, Lightning." Sombra said, with a smug old grin.
"What about me?" Karma asked.
"Don't worry; you'll get a spot too." Jet assured. "Though we will need to see more of your abilities."
With that, the team and their newest members left the ruined base for their own.
Later…
Several hours after Overwatch returned to base, another airship landed outside the Talon base, as several Talon troops stepped from the ship, followed by Moira, who gazed at the fallen Talon base with a blank expression.
She and some of her best lieutenants entered the base, ignoring some of the corpses of their comrades, before coming upon Sombra's room. Leaving her soldiers outside, Moira entered the threshold, looking about as if looking for something, before setting her sights upon a device on the bed. Picking it up, she activated it, as a red dot started blinking on the screen, displaying a location.
And for the first time in ages…she smiled.
"I finally found you," She whispered. "My boy."
