When Gavin awoke the next morning, Michael was nowhere to be found. Trying desperately not to hyperventilate, he rushed to grab his phone from the bedside table, planning to fire off a totally casual text asking when he was going to return and maybe completely offhandedly enquire as to where he had gone. However a note he found resting on top of said phone saved him the trouble.
'Had to go to the office for stuff. Back at like 11.30 ish.
Eat something.
Michael x'
He checked the time on his phone, anxiously chewing on his bottom lip. 10.02. He'd be fine on his own for an hour and a half, right?
Ten minutes of nervously pottering around the flat and a half hearted attempt to eat a bagel later, Gavin realised that the answer to that question was a resounding no when he dropped and broke a plate after jumping out of his skin at the neighbour's dog barking.
Sighing defeatedly, he pulled up his usual ride hailing app -for the first time relieved that it allowed you to select the gender of your driver- and requested a lift to the Rooster Teeth offices ASAP.
The next three minutes were spent rocking on his heels by the front door awaiting the text to notify him of his rides arrival.
He had never been more grateful of a silent driver, appreciatively granting her a 5 star rating as he walked through the Achievement Hunter building.
Checking the time again he saw that Michael would still be busy for at least another half an hour, so decided to hang out in the office and wait for him. Maybe see if Ryan was about today. Although he was still terrified of the possibility that his brain would twist the safety Ryan Haywood's presence into something sinister –the way it had done with Geoff- Gavin had decided that he needed to be stronger and face that fear head on. Even so, he couldn't quite quell the negative and fearful thoughts that ricochet round his head as he approached the half shut office door. His heart raced as he heard the low rumble that was Ryan's voice, although he couldn't make out the exact words being said. Pushing through the panic, he stood near the doorway, attempting to steady his breathing before revealing his presence to the other Achievement Hunters. As the thump of his own pulse lessoned in his temples, his ears honed in on his own name being spoken.
"-Gavin though. We can't just all be in the office together as usual! You were all here when he explained about Geoff!"
"Yes Ryan" sighed Jack "we all know that, but Gavin's being ridiculous. Geoff didn't do anything wrong here, and if we can't all work together anymore, how in the hell are we gonna function as a company?! Gav needs to get over this and stop punishing Geoff, or else-"
Tears were covering Gavins face and blurring his vision as he stumbled away; unable to bear to hear any more of Jacks speech and terrified that soon Geoff would add to it himself. He blindly staggered towards Burnies' office, knowing it'd be vacant at this time, unable to halt the echoes of Jack that were shouting in his head.
"Get over it, I should just get over it, need to get over it" he mumbled to himself as he nestled himself beside a potted plant behind Burnies' door. "Get over it, Gavin. Being ridiculous." He stared down at his hands, clenching and unclenching his fists in time with his rapid breath.
What if you can't get over it? A nasty little voice in his head asked spitefully.
Gavin buried his head in his knees and quietly sobbed. He couldn't answer.
Michael and Ray stared incredulously at Jack as he was speaking, Michael open-mouthed and red with anger.
"-Gav needs to get over this and stop punishing Geoff, or else-"
"Or else what?" Ryan interrupted, a warning clear in his tone.
Jack sighed again "or else we won't be a team anymore, Ryan. The company ca-"
"Fuck the company!" barked Geoff, who had been uncharacteristically silent throughout the meeting this far. "This isn't about the company Jack, this is about what's happening to Gavin! Michael said he's been having nightmares and flashbacks, but sees me as his attacker! Yeah, that sucks for me; yeah it may have an impact on our content and productivity or whatever for a while, but who fucking cares?! All anyone should be focused on is helping Gavin through this, because you can bet your ass that he's feeling shitty enough as it is without having to worry about the future of the company!" Geoff angrily wiped tears from his eyes with his forearm "and if anyone, anyone tells him to 'get over it' or words to that effect, their contract will be terminated on the fucking spot, are we all clear here?"
Jack looked hurt as he held his friends enraged glare. "Geoff, I would never say that to Gav. I'm so fucking worried about him. I didn't mean it how it sounded, it came out completely wrong, I'm sorry. I'm just..." he shifted his feet uncomfortably "I just don't know how to help either of you through this, and someone has to think about the content we're currently creating and I...I don't know what to do." Jack suddenly found himself pulled into a hug as Geoff held him tightly.
"I know Buddy. None of us know what to do. Well except maybe Ryan, who seems to know fuckin everything ever."
Ryan shrugged "I'm winging it. Just doing what I can and taking my cues from Gavin."
Geoff nodded at him approvingly, releasing Jack. "See man, we're all just trying our best here. Don't worry about me though, I'm fine. Just help Gav. Whatever he needs comes first."
Burnie had just sat down at his desk when he heard a soft sniffing sound. Glancing about his office he noticed a ball of Gavin, partially hidden by a large ficus.
"Jesus Christ, Gavin! You trying to give me a heart attack here!?" he let out a shaky laugh, his startled smile quickly becoming a frown when the lad didn't reply. "Gav?" Burnie moved closer until he was crouched next to him "What's up? Thought you were at Michaels today?"
Gavins only response was to lean his head against Burnies shoulder. Fighting to keep his balance, Burnie braced himself against the wall and slid into a sitting position on the floor alongside Gavin.
"Did something happen today? Something that upset you?" he asked gently, not wanting to push Gav into talking if he didn't want to, but simultaneously desperate to help in some way.
Gavin shook his head, still resting on Burnies' shoulder. "I just have to get over it." He whispered hoarsely.
At a total loss for what to say, Burnie simply held him. Pulling his phone from his pocket, he checked the time and quietly sent a text to Michael.
They were waiting in the lobby -Burnie and Kara doing their best to distract Gavin by telling amusing anecdotes about their respective pets- when Michael arrived. He nodded at Burnie, slipping his hand into Gavins.
"Sup boi! Burnie told me you'd decided to come in today after all. I'm ready to head out though if you're done here?"
Gavin smiled back at him, appreciative of how casual his best friend was being. "You bet!" he nodded, grasping Michaels hand tightly and turning to the front doors. "Let's get out of-" his voice tapered off as he stared at the three burly police officers who were making their way through the lobby.
"Where can we find a Mr Geoffrey Ramsey?" one of the officers asked Kara.
"Geoff? What do you want with Geoff?" inquired Kara, taken aback, throwing timid glances between Burnie and Gavin.
"Never you mind that Miss, just tell us where we can find him please." The officer replied firmly.
"Get Gavin home" Burnie murmured to Michael before stepping forward towards the officers, hand outstretched.
"Hello there, Michael Burns, CEO, is there anything I can do for you fellas?"
The lead officer shook his hand "You can tell us where to find Mr Ramsey." He replied, a slight irritation in his tone.
"Sure, I can call him down here now for you." He pulled up Geoffs number and dialled without waiting for a response from the officer. Whatever they wanted to say to Geoff that took three cops probably isn't something that he would want to hear in front of all his employees.
Michael tried to pull Gavin towards the exit as Burnie spoke to Geoff, suddenly struck by a terrible feeling, but the lad stood steadfast, refusing to move.
"Wha...what do they want with Geoff? Is this to do with me? But he already gave his statement..." Gavin whispered to no one in particular.
He was still rooted to the spot –despite Michaels best efforts- when Geoff entered the lobby.
Geoffs eyes widened as he clocked the three officers, his stride faltering slightly. He made to approach Burnie, open-mouthed in confusion, but stopped as the policemen surrounded him, moving as an organised and well-practiced unit.
"Geoffrey Ramsey?" queried the lead officer
"Y...yes? What's going on?"
"Gavin we have to go – now!" Michael was tugging on his arm urgently but he still refused to be moved.
"Geoffrey Ramsey, you are under arrest on suspicion of rape."
