Author's Note: So...like an idiot I didn't look at what chapter I updated and accidentally posted the chapter on the wrong story. So...I had to re-write this chapter. As a result things are different and it probably doesn't fit in as well anymore. I'm really sorry guys! Really and if it raises some confusion, again really sorry. Try to think of this as a revised edition...
I'm also upset though, because I usually have copies of the chapters just in case - but of course I just so happened to delete them. *Insert face-palm* I was REALLY mad at myself and I can't stress how sorry I am. Plus I left this for ages to re-write so I forgot what the chapter was about...
*You're welcome to mob me*
That being said, sorry if this chapter's a little different. I've read the one before and after and tried to fill as many gaps as possible.
Once again I'm really sorry,
D.L.D
"Girl we have another akuma problem," Alya's voice rang through Marinette's ears as she groggily held her phone to her ear.
It was late at night; no it was almost early hours of the morning. The bluenette had been sleeping, enjoying one of the few moments of peace she had these days, when her best friend had called her waking Marinette instantly. She barely had any time to process what was going on before deciding to wake Adrien and then debate about whether to go or not. After all, Luna Moth seemed to be after all of the heroes' children and Emma was the only one left.
The rest were gone...
"I know, but I don't think it's wise to leave Emma alone," Marienette bit her lip as she watched the infant play with her father, tugging at the cat ears on his suit. "She's the only one Lila hasn't taken yet."
There was a heavy sigh on the other end of the line before the sound of rushing air. The connection of metal against metal then rang, the meaning clear to the experienced heroine. The battle was raging on while she was delaying Ladybug and Chat Noir's arrival. Ladybug was needed to purify the akumas, but at the same time it was risky to leave Emma alone. Yet taking Emma would risk all sorts of other things too.
"Look I know you're paranoid about Lila right now," Alya spoke slowly, careful in her choice of words, before grunting, "But you need to get here asap! Luna Moth's made three akumas and I'm pretty sure they're the missing children."
Three akumas. The exact number to fit the missing children. One for each child...
"They are?" The bluenette's eyes widened, not quite believing her friend's words. The pieces were definitely clicking, but she didn't want to think of it that way. Marinette didn't want to believe that Lila would go that far to achieve her goals.
"Yeah, my son's definitely here. Chloe's twins have to be the other two..." Alya trailed off, her voice wavering slightly. There was a pause and then another clash of metal. "It's...difficult seeing them like this. I don't think - it's gonna be trying to fight them, let alone take them head on."
That was what was needed to confirm Marinette's suspicions. The sound of her best friend, the most resilient and tough person she knew, crumbling under something. Alya was someone who came across as the most tough person ever. She didn't take shit from anyone and knew hoe to defend her own. So for Alya, the strong and independent Alya, to sound so uncertain - it meant that this was serious and that Marinette had to help out. She just had to.
"I understand," Marinette sighed as she decided what she had to do. Even if it went against all of her better (and maternal) instincts, it was for the best. Plus they may be able to get back the missing children if they purify the akumas quick enough.
Yet another reason to go...
But that did mean that Marinette would have to leave Emma. But only for a few moments at most. Ladybug won't take longer than half an hour. No, scratch that - not longer than fifteen to twenty minutes. Yep. If Ladybug does she'll send herself or Chat Noir back here. There wouldn't be a chance for Luna Moth to take her kid. Marinette would make sure of that.
Chewing her lip, the bluenette turned to her family, Emma now asleep and Chat seemingly caught up on what was happening.
"So we're going?"
She nodded, a grimace on her features, "But not for long."
Soon they were both transformed, heading towards the nearest window.
"I'm sure we'll only take a meow-ment," Chat quipped.
"And I'm regretting it already," Ladybug sighed, rolling her eyes as she pushed her partner through the window.
"Thank god you're here Ladybug!" Rena Rouge grinned as she spotted her scarlet clad friend. Relief seemed to flood her more than ever before as she spotted the heroine. "These akumas are trickier than usual."
The battle scene definitely spoke for that. People were passed out everywhere among toys that looked a lot like teddy bears and plastic soldiers. The only things that really spoke of a battle, and not a play date, happening were the indents and damage caused to the surrounding area.
Buildings had gaping holes and chinks, the inhabitants long evacuated. The streets were also filled with sand, toys and fallen lampposts - clearly displaying a huge struggle. Debris also seemed to be scattered within the toys, masked by the bodies of the unconscious and toys. From the sight alone you knew that this was a high level threat.
"Well, let's do our best to wrap this up quickly then," The bug themed heroine smiled slightly, albeit her senses still being jittery. Time was of the essence and so she wanted to wrap this up.
Rena Rouge nodded response, understanding completely and slipping out of her relief.
"Of course," A professional gesture and soon everything had been filled in.
Apparently the akumas had arrived late at night, keeping low on the radar until they were instructed to strike. This resulted in many people making their daily commute back from work, or simply just minding their own business, becoming victims of their powers. Sleeping powder, becoming a teddy bear or a plastic soldier, and even minor forms of mind control had been used.
Now all that remained were the heroes, all of them having instructed the police force to keep civilians out of the crossfire. After all the less bodies to dance around, the easier to fight the enemy. Especially when that enemy seemed to exploit the heroes' need to protect people to gain the upper hand. A trait that identified Luna Moth well as she was a former hero. She knew all the tricks in the book - every single one.
It shows how far she's fallen from grace...
"Where have they gone?" Rena frowned as she and Ladybug approached the area that the others had lured the akumas to. It seemed that Chat had better luck than them when finding everyone when separated. Something they all seemed to note despite the blonde's severe bad luck streak.
"Are you sure they were here?" Ladybug frowned, scanning the nearby area but not finding any signs of life besides the sleeping people.
All was still in the street, shop fronts closed and houses seeming to be asleep without their inhabitants. Only the streetlamps and moon provided light for the heroes, shadows being cast all around them. Shadows that seemed to mix and melt with the lethal silence they greeted. Not even the wind seemed to whisper in the street and all seemed still. Way too still.
"I'm certain that they were," The fox themed heroine's brows furrowed, foot tapping as she tried to think of where the others could have gone. "They can't be far off. I mean they make a lot of noise."
Ladybug nodded, listening as she walked over to see something that caught her eye. It was a pillow sprinkled with what looked like golden powder. Ladybug examined it, letting it spill between her fingers back onto the pillow. It was very fine and perhaps even used for something other than decoration or medicine.
"That's the sleeping stuff," Rena joined her, grimacing at the powder. "If that's here then - "
The heroine tensed, eyes wide and features seeming alert before she pushed Ladybug out of the way.
"Watch out!"
They both landed just out of harm's reach, narrowly avoiding the aim of the teddy's gun. Yes, the teddy's gun. The teddy was carrying a gun.
"Go get the miracle box!" Rena frowned, flute ready to go as she got back up in record time. Blood was trickling down her jaw, perhaps from where she'd landed against the pavement. "I'm pretty sure that this thing's got something to do with the others."
"Are you sure?" Ladybug raised a brow, knowing very well that doing so would be risky. "What about - "
"I'll wait here when I'm done," Rena insisted, watching as the stuffed animal reloaded. The damn thing looked evil too, its eyes shallow and glassy. "Just go!"
Nodding, Ladybug took off hoping that she wasn't making a mistake.
Moonlight. Gentle, soft moonlight. It was a girl's only companion during the night - no people daring to come to her. So she was lost as a wanderer, a daydreamer, walking among the stars as she passed through Paris.
"Of course it is but a dream..."
Celeste was never normal. How could she be when she was so solitary? The stars and moon were this girl's only companions, no-one ever thinking about whether to approach her. In fact her existence was melancholic and lonely, solidarity taking over her life. Her mother was neglectful, her father gone and family little to none. No-one cared for and looked for this girl. She only had one person to rely on and that was herself.
The only other person was her grandmother. Celeste's grandmother was the only person who provided colour in the teen's monochromatic life. She brought the girl from depression, making her enjoy life and see worth in people. But that all crumbled to dust when her mother gained custody of her.
Celeste and her mother had a complicated dynamic. They didn't hate each other, but they weren't close either. The pair were just...estranged roommates really. The mother and daughter shared a house, not coming into many encounters and not initiating any conversations. They just paralleled. Sure, Celeste knew her mom was a little crazy and odd (most likely from the pressure of being a young parent) but she often ignored it in favour of charting the stars.
Yes, that's right stars.
Much like her father, Celeste loved the stars. She often spent hours looking at maps and constellations, excitedly marking the dates when she could best see these. The teen was a local expert on the best spots to see the night sky and what you could see within it. Celeste dedicated her whole existence to this. It was everything to her. It was what made her human, what made her normal. This passion, this hobby, that was the only thing Celeste had really inherited from her father.
But then again she was kinda glad about that.
Celeste's father was an ok guy. He had a nice life, a nice wife and had lived pretty well. But hidden underneath his perfect life and passion for stars, was the sick identity of a rapist. Celeste's father was what someone could call completely sick. He had started off ok, but over time he became psychotic and controlling. Ever since some weird accident he always told her about, Celeste's father had been odd.
When she used to visit him behind bars, her father used to always tell her odd stories. After giving her a star map and some other junk to do with astrology, he would sit her down and tell about things. These things could range from stories of his youth, to how he killed kittens in his backyard. As a result Celeste had a lot of mental trauma referring to her father, especially when people mention about how she's a bastard child. Like an actual bastard child...not very nice to think about.
So over the years, she built her defenses by ignoring those things. Celeste built her walls and kept people out, knowing that without people she wouldn't get hurt. As a result she often was alone, walking through the streets of Paris and documenting weird things she discovered.
Much like right now.
"Ladybug!"
It was a red flash, something that could be mistaken for a blink, and yet Celeste knew what it was. Call it supervision, or perhaps her practice from looking through telescopes, but Celeste knew that the heroine had passed. As a result she followed the flash towards a back alley. It was there that she heard the clash of weapons, voices growing louder and clearer as she moved further along it.
"We're done for!" Queen Bee appeared within Celeste's view, golden hair in its signature curl. "There's no way we can survive!"
Bunnix appeared beside her at this, the rabbit-themed hero just appearing from a burrow. The blueish-white portal closed like a silent snap, blinking closed faster than a spring could bounce.
"Hey, we can still wi - "
"No we're all dying here!" Queen Bee insisted, interrupting Bunnix as she tried to fend off more teddy bears. The blonde then placed a hand to her forehead, sighing dramatically. "Who would've thought I'd go out like this? Killed by a thousand teddy bears!"
The rabbit themed heroine simply groaned at that, rolling her eyes as she impaled another teddy. Sand and stuffing spilled from the bear, the limbs freezing as Bunnix removed it from her umbrella. Grimace in place, the heroine then dropped the still bear watching as the sand turned dark and sludgy.
"You're overreacting."
Celeste watched in wonder, automatically pulling out her phone as the battle continued. Barely anyone managed to get footage of Paris' heroes in a quality such as this! Especially up close in an area that had been formally evacuated. Filming something like this was like getting a taste of golden goose eggs! You had to leap at the chance or you'd never get another again, especially with how Luna Moth liked to target different areas with her akuma attacks.
It was impossible to plan where to film.
"Please, if only I could," Queen Bee rolled her eyes, weapon streaking a plastic soldier this time. The giant toy fell to the ground, knocking back other unnatural toys. "They're going to kill us."
"Sometimes I wonder..." Bunnix rolled her eyes at the over-exaggerating blonde, shaking her head as she let out a slight huff. The heroine then narrowed her gaze slightly, brows raising as she turned to face the alleyway in which Celeste was hidden within. "I can see you, you know."
The teen froze at that, squeaking slightly as she clutched her still-recording phone between slightly shaking fingers. Olive green eyes blinked slightly, the owner shuffling into the shadows a little more as the rabbit-themed heroine looked directly at her. Soon Queen Bee joined the stare fest, intrigued about what could have caught the usually time-conscious heroine's attention. A hand sat on her hip, blue eyes narrowed as she kicked away a teddy-bear.
"You mean that kid?" Queen Bee frowned slightly, lips pressed as she went back to fighting off the toys. "I'm sure she'll be fine. If she evaded the police then she clearly had skill."
"What like Rena in her high school days?" Bunnix scoffed at that, rolling her eyes once more as she went to collect the snooping minor. "She was put in a lot of danger back then. But then again..."
The rabbit-themed heroine then stopped, a thoughtful look upon her features as her foot tapped. Then she gave a grin, eyes lighting up with an idea as she called out to the only other hero who would consider her highly risky preposition.
"Hey Ladybug, you think we should let this kid join us?"
Queen Bee looked at the heroine, incredulous, but didn't say anything at all. Instead she huffed and went further into the battle, mumbling about how she wasn't involved and wouldn't get involved with time-keeper and ultimate-boss' decisions. In fact the blonde even went on to mutter something else, but it wasn't heard as Ladybug came zipping in, the sound of her yo-yo as unmistakable as ever.
"This one?" Ladybug raised a brow slightly, looking at the brunette hiding within the alleyway. The phone was still clutched in her hands, recording a lot of what was going on. "Well, if she managed to get here she does have the skill set. But why her, Bunnix?"
The rabbit-themed heroine frowned slightly at that, thought once again crossing her masked features. The foot-tapping returned, the gesture similar to a rabbit, as the female then looked at her fellow hero, mind made.
"Because something about her seems important."
Ladybug gave a nod at that and the rabbit-themed heroine left, knowing that the choice was ultimately up to Ladybug. Trusty old Ladybug.
"This is getting worse by the second!"
It seemed as if the heroes were being swamped in by the akumas' minions now. Teddy bears, plastic soldiers and a sleep sand that seemed impossible to evade were now piling up against the heroes, the akumas seeming to have an endless supply of their choice weapons. As a result the hope was beginning to dim, the heroes' efforts being great but not limitless like those of these akumas. Therefore it wasn't surprising when the adults grew weary, their goal seeming further away than ever.
"We have to keep going!" Chat Noir insisted, hands grasping his baton way too tightly, "If we give up now then she'll know we're beat!"
"But we are beat, Chat," Queen Bee grumbled, the blonde not at all amused.
At this rate the battle can stretch well into the next few hours of the next day, no-one getting sleep despite how exhausted they are. Plus with that knowledge, a lot of things would be delayed and a lot of trouble would be caused for Chloe Bourgeois. As a result the bee-themed heroine wasn't the most pleased, her mood soured even more as she was fighting her own kids. Her own kids that she had birthed into this world.
"But he is right," Rena joined, although reluctant. Her flute then speared a bear, the heroine using it to sweep a clear path. "If we do give up, Luna Moth can use that."
Queen Bee only grumbled at that, not agreeing but not completely disagreeing either. Instead she only complained to Bunnix, highlighting how the rabbit-themed hero mentioning the kid who was hiding in the alley was partially responsible for this. After all, is Bunnix hadn't insisted on the kid being useful then Ladybug would be here and things would be a little easier with the heroine's levelheadedness and guidance.
"Don't look at me like that!" Bunnix huffed, opening and entering a burrow. She then popped out beside an akuma, a smirk on her features. "We should be able to handle ourselves without Ladybug chasing our asses 24/7."
Agreements were met at that, the heroes steadily widening their path as the exchanged opinions within the group. Soon they had made a decent progression, the bears and other toys forced to give back some ground as they crowded to protect their 'masters'. Their oh-so-important masters.
That meant the tides were turning, and as always good prevailed against evil. It worked every time.
"Now!"
The shout of one of the akumas was unmistakable, a dashing of sleeping powder spread all over above the streets of Paris. This caused all of the heroes to duck into places that would provide protection from the sudden attack, some already dropping asleep as they stumbled towards alcoves and sheltered doorways. That left the group with fewer numbers and a laughing trio of akumas as the sleeping powder continued to rain.
"And we're back to square one."
Ladybug gave a sigh as she looked at the teen before her, internally hoping that she wasn't making a mistake by trusting her to use a miraculous. After all, this child was a complete stranger and it was odd how she managed to sneak onto the scene of an akuma attack. It was near impossible for a normal person to squeeze through the tight guard of the police force when an attack was occurring, especially one of this scale. So this minor raised a lot of questions. A lot of questions as to who she was and what she was doing here.
After all, not just anyone could do what she did.
"You want me to help don't you?"
The words easily left Celeste's mouth, the teen eyeing the box that Ladybug seemed to hold within her grasp. The phone had now stopped recording, hidden within the minor's pocket. She then stepped out of the shadow's face certain and yet uncertain.
"Things are getting worse, aren't they?"
The heroine bit her lip at that, wincing as she heard the familiar sound of a weapon clashing with another. A few shouts accompanied it and then they were a little harder to hear, causing Ladybug to release a sigh. Things definitely weren't getting better...
"Not exactly," Ladybug shook her head, passing the minor the box. "In there is a miraculous. It gives you powers and with it you can help stop this."
Celeste raised a brow at this, her certainty becoming a lot more uncertain as she peered at the box. It was black with red markings in a script that looked similar to the style of the Eastern world's kanji, built in an octagonal shape. It looked odd and magical, like those boxes in horror movies or the fantasy series you could find on trashy streaming sites and such. The type where the protagonist went on an adventure in a warped reality or another world.
The type that meant a change.
"W-what if I'm not who you need?" Celeste looked up from the box, biting her lip as anxiety and insecurity took over. The box felt heavy, odd, like she shouldn't have it.
Shaking her head, Celeste held out the box. She didn't want to accept it. Ladybug could keep it and find someone who's a little more skilled than Celeste to be a hero. After all, the teen was a loner, an unwanted obstacle, a bitter disappointment; the heroes of Paris would be a lot better off without someone like her as a teammate. There's better candidates out there - more eager people - and they'd be a much better fit.
A perfect fit.
"You won't know until you try," Ladybug gave a smile, kind and motherly, as she pushed the box back. "All heroes have to start somewhere."
Wordlessly, Celeste opened the box to reveal a brooch. It was shaped like a peacock's feathers, the main colour of it being a metallic green similar to a light-pea-green. Each feather had a round orb coloured similarly to a white pearl and rimmed with silver. At the centre of the fan of peacock feathers sat a metal piece shaped similarly to a peacock. A blue orb sat on the thickest part of the tiny metal piece, completing the look of the intricate and yet simple brooch.
It looked amazing, breathtaking. It was like something out of a fairy tale.
Therefore Celeste had to refuse.
"Ladybug I can't - "
The teen had tried to speak out, but the heroine was gone, vanishing from the alley and leaving the teen all alone.
Luna Moth stood in her butterfly-filled room, the creatures' white wings illuminated by the pale light of the moon. They all fluttered avidly as the ex-heroine looked outside of her large window, lips pressed and hands grasping her cane tightly in anger and thought. In deep thought as she brooded and wondered when she should make her next calculated move. Her next, game-changing shift in this perpetual game of chess.
"My darling akumas," Her voice leaves soft, melodic, an oddly sweet tone added to the sinister words. A violet butterfly outline frames her face, green eyes unmasked by the costume she wears. "I have a new task for you to do for your beloved aunt Lila. I'm sure you'll like it a lot too."
The villainess could feel their attentions shifting, their clouded minds coming to focus on their 'creator's' words. Words which would become orders unless they wanted lose their powers and their ability to see their parents again.
"Good," The woman all but purred, a dark giggle rising on her lips. "Now I want one of you, preferably not one of the twins, to go and away and get a little package for me. Her name is Emma Agreste and she'll be your new playmate."
"Playmate?"
The response was odd, Luna Moth not expecting the children to know such complex words. However she couldn't dwell on such things and chalked it up as the akuma giving them a better intelligence than the one they were born with. As a result a quick response was already gathered, the villainess withholding her gleeful cackles as she rubbed her hands together.
"Yes my dears," Luna Moth grinned. "You're new playmate. Now get her for me or you know what happens."
The butterfly outline then disappeared and the woman let out a chuckle as it did. Things were steadily falling into place. Steadily.
A/N: Just a little skit to keep something alike to the old times (cause my writing style has definitely changed).
Alya: You've really done it this time.
Me: I know! *sighs* I regret deleting the original stuff.
Alya: Damn right you do. *Sniffs* But this one is better style wise.
Me: Why thank you. I've been practicing.
Alya: And it's been a year *snickers*
Me: Why you -
*Goes to punch her but Marinette magically appears*
Marinette: You two weren't about to fight were you?
Me: What, no!
Alya: As if!
*Both sweat profusely as we are obviously terrible at hiding the truth*
Marinette: Since you can't get along, I'll give the 'special prize' to Adrien and Nino.
Adrien and Nino: Yes!
Me: How did they even get here?
Alya: Beats me. I'm just pissed now cause they get the stupid prize.
Me: I know... Ugh! It's no fair!
Alya: Yeah it's not!
*Thinking*
Me: You wanna annoy Marinette cause she did this?
Alya: Yeah. Let's call her mama Marinette!
*Both run off to cause trouble*
