Chapter 25: we come running
The day wasn't getting any better. After an explosion, a trip around the Seireitei, two other explosions, running toward the third, they were now watching the confusion happening in said squad. Not to mention that the eight squad was probably in a different state of confusion. Ichigo was seriously wondering what to do. And then there was the tiny little detail that both Hinamori and Matsumoto looked at him for orders.
There was one thing to run into the battle and only listen to the head captain, whenever that happened. But it was another when he knew that a bunch of underlings were counting on him. Not to mention that he had three options: go back to his squad and monitor whatever comotion that was going on there; actually listen to the order to drag his body to the headquarters, or do something else entirely different that he still didn't know what was.
"Captain Kurosaki?" Hinamori asked again with a worried look.
"Don't worry," half laughed the red haired woman, "He is burning up the few brain cells he have."
"Hey!" he screamed, indignated, "I'm just worried." The sad look Hinamori gave him made him frown. He was worried about his family that's it. A family that was now included a fair amount of souls in soul society.
The third was still a mess. Having all the options they had, the best they had for the moment was to sit beside the boy and watch as the third fell to crumbles. Apparently the smoke inside the walls had some massive effect on the memories of the folks. One of the guys from the fourth had come out and asked them if they knew why he was there.
They must have been affected too by the smoke as they didn't know how long they had been staying in one position. They all turned their head at the newest arrival.
"Where is Ryuu?" asked the imposing stature of the captain of the sixth squad. Ichigo looked strangely at the newcomer. Why would he of all people ask for Ryuu?
"Well good afternoon to you too captain Kuchiki," said Matsumoto playfully. At least it seems like her headache was getting better. But the captain kept on staring at Ichigo.
Ichigo didn't know when it happened, and the movement was too quick for him to follow. He suddenly felt his arm burn as if pierced by a thousand needles at once. He knew that his relation with Rukia had never pleased her brother, but never had he attacked him out of the blue.
What happened next went so fast it was hard to know what really happened. The zanpaktou was out, the energy was running wild and Matsumoto had to use all her willpower not to crumble under the weight of Byakuya. In a sudden and quick move, Hinamori dragged the wounded captain away from the danger zone. He didn't have the force to protest and Ichigo was certain she must have pulled some kind of voodoo thing on him. He would never leave a friend alone, even less alone against someone as strong as Byakuya. True, the 10th seat from the third helped out, but a dizzy lieutenant and a 10th seat was no match for a rather mad captain.
"Wait!" he screamed at the other girl, "We can't just leave them," he protested.
"Where is your zanpaktou?" she asked instead. He looked back, confused.
"Well in the squad." They made a turn then and there.
"There is no way we'll make it there in time," she pondered.
"There is no time for what?" he questioned back, still mad about the leaving behind a friend.
"I'm sorry captain but in your state there is no way you can fight."
"You seem to forget I took on Byakuya before, when I had just learned how to use my bankai."
"And therein lies the problem, you don't have your zanpaktou with you."
"But you could have fought," stated the male. "There is no way Matsumoto can last long if Byakuya is after a fight."
"I don't think that is what captain Kuchiki is after," she said while emphasizing the captain. "He is after blood, and as you probably haven't noticed yet, he is following us."
Sure enough the other captain was at their back, still a bit away, but considering how fast he was, they didn't have much time and honestly, there was still a long way till they reached the eight. Being faster than the girl, Ichigo placed her over his shoulder and picked up the pace.
"Wha-" was her scream of indignation as he did so.
"I'm faster," he stated simply, "What exactly is going on?" Coming to the conclusion that she wouldn't be able to get down, she kept looking at the captain that she now had a view on every time he stopped to touch down.
"It appears captain Kuchiki is under some sort of influence. His eyes are darker and if I'm not mistaken, last I saw him properly his iris were very dilated. His posture isn't right either. He is out for blood and to fight him you'll have to fight with all you have."
"But why is he after me?"
"He's not," she pointed out. "Remember, he asked for Ryuu, but that he would think you would be the best way to get to him is strange. Maybe it's because you are both strangers born in the world of the living."
Ichigo knew for a fact that that wasn't it. The most probable thing was that Byakuya knew about his relation to Ryuu.
"No matter, we need to get there fast."
"He is right behind you!" screamed Hinamori, "Hurry up!" Ichigo tried his best, but it was difficult with one arm hurt, and the other holding her. As they went, she kept him posted as to where the other captain was and how far he needed to go. He concentrated the most energy on his feet, if he lost his footing there was no way they'd make it. They passed entire squads in total despair and chaos, others were as calm as an early morning in spring. The scream of the girl made him move slightly to the side and push harder from the ground. This saved him a lot of trouble. As Byakuya seem to have no control over his surroundings, Kempachi came flying into his side, a hit probably meant for Ichigo. The two captains tumbled in a ball of chaos.
"You think he's on our side?" asked Ichigo as his pace slowed down.
"Absolutely not," stressed Hinamori, hitting him on the shoulder to make him move faster. "Get going." He didn't have to be asked twice. This little stop for Byakuya could just give them enough time to reach the squad.
"We have another problem," she said, still looking over his shoulder.
"Which is?"
"I think captain kempachi also is under the same influence as Byakuya. He is after you too." Sure enough they were both after him and coming fast at him. "They don't seem to feel the pain."
"Ah, I can see the squad."
"Can I ask you something?" she said rather shyly, surely feeling like she couldn't impose on a captain.
"Sure."
"If they are after you, can you try to drag them out of the seireitei? I promise I'll talk to your squad to make sure they know what is going on." He thought a little about it but it was probably the best idea.
"I'll do my best but I don't know how long I can outrun them for."
"I'll try and find my captain to get him to sound the alarm. Thank you, captain Kurosaki."
As he fell down on the ground with two captains right behind him, he tossed Hinamori aside, hopefully not too hard. He ran through the corridors, into his office, grabbed his zanpaktou, and ran out the window.
He felt the movement of Byakuya before he saw him. Countering the blow he ran away from the squad, the two captains in tow. Hopefully, Hinamori had made it and could tell the confused underlings that had seen him pass what exactly was happening.
…
Hinamori felt in one of the bushes in the eight. Luckily it wasn't the rosebushes. The two mad captains didn't seem to see her fall of the shoulders, as if in trance going after what they wanted. As she saw captain Kurosaki run out of the window and a distressful Sado nearly running after him again, she got an idea.
"Third seat," she screamed after him, at least three times since her 'screaming' wasn't exactly as loud as most. He heard her in the end. He looked puzzled at the woman that came from the opposite side of where the entrance of the squad was. Or the fact that she probably had a lot of branches stuck to her.
"Lieutenant Hinamori," he said. His posture betrayed his calm, he knew something was up.
Taking the time to explain what exactly was going on, he listened patiently until she was finished talking. She explained about the different messages from the head captain and the central 49, the explosions that didn't originate from Ryuu, and lastly why exactly his captain came running through the compound without any explanations. Having said her piece he just looked at her a long time before saying: "So who exactly is responsible?"
"We don't know, but if you could relay the message to the rest of this squad and then prepare for eventual battle, that would be very kind. As I said, your captain is a bit tied up at the moment."
"Of course," he assured her, showing her the way out. "I hope you find your captain before anything happens to him." He also told her he would make sure to spread the information to the nearby squads that might have lost their captains in the process.
Thanking him, she ran in between the streets, making sure to keep a low profile. She had always been at peace while talking with sado as he too was a quiet soul and didn't feel like talking was important all the time. He also seemed to listen when she talked instead of talking louder than her.
The white streets in between the buildings were calm. She was torn between going toward the first or the fifth. Her captain had also been called in to a meeting so there was a rather large chance he too was affected.
Making her way toward the fifth she passed the sixth squad. It was eerily quiet so she had to look inside to see. There was no one at the gate and no one in sight really from what she could see. Taking one step inside however she suddenly had the urge to hold her hand up as at least 12 zanpaktous were pointed toward her.
"What exactly is going on?" she asked with her voice barely trembling.
"I'm asking the questions here," said the third seat of the squad. "Who are you?"
"I'm lieutenant Hianamori of the fifth squad, and I don't like having pointy things pointed at me, so if you can please put them down I'd be happy," she said, rather annoyed for being treated as such.
"Our captain told us to trust no one."
"Well your captain was probably right, but considering he just chased me through the seiretei I'd say he is the one that is not trustworthy right now."
The man, sceptic, told the men to put down the weapons and invited her in to tell them exactly what she knew. So she told the story again, how she met Captain Hitsugaya, then captain Kurosaki and finally captain Kuchiki.
"Seireitei is under attack," she finished.
"The last part we know. Our captain told us to stay inside and trust no one. Be certain no one know we are here. If trouble comes to us or the warning bells are heard, we are to follow the order of any captain that is against the problem and event then they need to prove their worth before we trust them."
"Which is a good plan. Third seat Sado is responsible for the eight. In the meantime captain Kurosaki is being chased by your captain. Where is your lieutenant?"
"Inside, in case there someone we cannot defeat comes along. I'll be sure to pass the information along."
After leaving the sixth, Hinamori made her way back again toward the seventh to relay the information she had to them too. They also had a missing captain but only the lieutenant knew about that. She thanked her for the information and told momo that she would warn her squad and make them ready for combat if need be.
As she appeared to have lost a lot of the day talking and explaining herself, she ran as fast as she could toward her own squad that was probably in the same shape as the three she had just passed. As she was so close to the entrance the captain to the fourth tumbled down in front of her.
"Captain." She had to think fast as the captain, with a broken leg she noticed, lunged at her. Unfortunately, she wasn't fast enough and hit her head on the ground.
Hinamori blinked a few times before her eyes adjusted to the light and she stopped seeing spots of yellow and white.
"Ah, look who's awakened at last," said the oh so familiar voice of the head captain.
Looking around she saw she was in a cell, not unusual from the ones they all had in their respective squads, but something was off about it.
"We're in the central 49 if you were wondering," said the voice of Renji.
"And there is apparently no way out," pointed the head captain out.
The last one sitting on the floor, his hat over his head and eyes semi closed. He seemed to have been there a bit. Abarai on the contrary was standing and moving around the cell. She sighed.
"At least things are starting to make sense."
…
Hitsugaya hit his head way to hard on the pavement. He wouldn't have done that if the explosion happened while he was in the air, but since it happened at the moment his feet came in contact with the floor, it sent him tumbling to the ground at a rather large speed.
Barely having gained his footing, Momo came running toward him in a fit of panic, explaining that all captains had been summoned to the first squad and he had to hurry.
He knew he must have terrified his sister when he had told her to get out of his way. He had taken a few breath and told her about the general things he knew, omitting the very specifics as to what really happened in that bloody cave. There was only one place Hitsugaya could be going, and that was to find the bastard that trapped him all those years ago.
She had to explain to him that the captain she knew would never be ruled by emotions like this, especially not in a dire situation. He had to agree. But why would the head captain send for all the captains and not ring the bells? Hinamori told him she was about to find captain Kurosaki, by order of central 49. He warned her that it might be a trap and she should probably relay the message he told her to the orange headed captain.
Even if Hitsugaya wanted to go on after that, he had let his zanpaktou slip from his hands when he fell, and he couldn't exactly leave before he had found it. Even if the thought had crossed his mind. Thinking about it, why did he even hold his weapon in his hand, that was a rushed move. The second explosion that had happened right after, had blown one of the buildings and made it tumble right on top of where his weapon probably was. What luck he had today. Ever since this morning from about 7 till now, new things had just been piling up.
Thinking about it, it should be around noon now which mean the day was going way to fast for his liking. As he dug through the rubble with his bare hands, the only thought he had was that he was going to kill that bastard. He eventually needed to stop when he couldn't feel his hand anymore. Looking at the palms of his hands, they were covered in blood. He didn't even know when that happened.
He let himself fall flat on the ground, looking up at the sky. Why? Why couldn't he just do things the right way? He felt like he had only made mistakes ever since the incident all those years ago. He had to think. Thinking usually made his head calmer. Thinking about what his sister had said he had to agree: he wasn't behaving normally. But then again, who would be fine after learning that the one who literally broke you is within your grasp? The memories of that specific year came rushing back. He didn't exactly make any friends there. There was one soul though who had found it funny to tease him all the time and made sure to always destroy his good spirit. He died in the end too. They all did.
He remembered that he had tried to convince the counsel to go to the cave and see for them self. Or at least give the poor souls a proper burial. They never listened.
Toshiro could hear the voices of soul reapers in the distance but he couldn't care less. There was only one man he wanted dead. And that was the man behind it all.
He had to breathe. As he lay there silent on the ground he felt lost. What to do? Rushing to the third now was stupid as there was no one left there anyway. Going to the first was pointless. He knew he could trust captain Kuchiki to do the right thing. Central 49? Was there seriously something fishy there again? Had they learned nothing since the time Aizen destroyed the entire community?
As always, his thoughts came back to the cave whenever he thought of Ryuu. What was wrong with him? Ryuu had come barging in for an explanation on something regarding his mother, of that he was sure. But no matter how much he played the scene from this morning in his head the more he was convinced that Ryuu wasn't exactly happy with him. Maybe his mother had told him the truth. Had she told him about the cave?
That only brought forth the other question: Was ryuu adopted? If that was the case, he could have been the product of an experiment that Yin Yang had done. Then the eyes wouldn't be Simon's and the traits of his face wouldn't be Karin's. But as he pictured Ryuu in his mind, he was certain they had the same nose and the expressions, and there was too much of a resemblance between the two for it to be a figment of his imagination. And he most definitely had not forgotten her face.
The cave. That was the only explanation left. If Ryuu was indeed the product of an experiment and Karin's child, then that only left the possibility that Ryuu was indeed his son. When he came to the conclusion he rose from his spot. That would be nonsense. Even if it would explain a lot of things.
He closed his eyes to think. If he was allowed to even go there. If Ryuu was his. He couldn't even think about it. If it was real, if it was not. Coming to a conclusion only to find it to be wrong could destroy him even more.
But if he thought like it for a second, that would explain why she at the time could use both their zanpaktou. If she was pregnant at the time. It would also explain her change in reitsu. And it would most definitely explain why the head captain was so against them ever meeting again. But if that was the case, the head captain must have known. Not to mention, Ryuu's ability would make sense. He had inherited Toshiro's ability.
If he continued on that thinking path: Had Hiorinmaru known? Was that why his zanpaktou had been so quiet for the past years? That would explain how he found Ryuu sa fast. But was such a connection even possible?
He fell back down on his back again. It was to much. If it made sense it was only because he wanted to, wasn't it? After all, if she was pregnant at the time how come Ryuu wasn't older? He didn't know much about the cycles, but he was fairly certain a pregnancy only lasted 9 month. And even if it was longer, why didn't she tell him? Why would she?
Just thinking about all that made his head hurt. If Ryuu was indeed his son, he had made a massive mistake. Not only was Ryuu in mortal danger right now, but how could he ever face her again? She must hate him. Stopping his train of thoughts. Ryuu was in mortal danger. If Ryuu was an experiment issued from the two of them, he was a perfect balance, so where in the world was the part that related him to his mother?
He stood up, searching in the rubbles. Be smart, think smart. If the bastard didn't kill Ryuu, the ice would. How could he be so stupid? How could he be blinded so much by a pitiful thing as who was the brat's father?
Toshiro wouldn't assume anything. He was not going to before she told him. Any hopes other than that could be fatal. Anyway, Ryuu was a precious boy he had come to like despite who his father was. And said kid was about to die. There was only one place he was going right now. He was finding Ryuu.
As he dragged the zanpaktou from the rubbles he was clear minded. One enemy and one goal. Any other ideas was in the way. He still wanted that bastard dead though.
He jumped in the air to see how things were looking and if he could identify any thing. As he did he saw a mass flying toward him. At full speed, kempachi launched from the ground aiming straight at him. Toshiro managed to get out of the way but not before the tip of the zanpaktou graced his skin.
Both landing in the streets, Hitsugaya could see the wrong angle of the other man's hand. He was holding his zanpaktou with a broken hand and didn't seem fazed by it at all. Of course this captain was an oddity all the time, but something was definitely not right.
Not wanting to fight a fellow captain, Toshiro noticed his eyes were dilated. He didn't know how long he would last if he continued just dodging the blows of the other man. One vicious blow sent him flying into a building. Looking up he saw Ichigo flying over his head with a bundle in his arms.
At the same moment Kempachi was about to fly right into Toshiro, and Kurosaki in the same time, when captain Kuchiki ended up in the passage. The limbs of the two captains were tangled together and allowed Hitsugaya to slip away.
Hiding wasn't in his instincts but right now he needed to figure out exactly what was going on, and being dead was not going to help him achieve that. Luckily, or not so much for the orange head, both captains decided it was more interesting to run after Kurosaki. But before the two got to far away he could feel it again, that energy that made his blood boil. Yin Yang had done something to them. So that was why there was a so called captain meeting. Then where exactly was the head captain? There went his plan for making captain Kuchiki deal with the first squad. There was no going there now.
Still incapable of doing much more than running before getting dizzy, he nearly ran into Lieutenant Ise at the corner of a street.
"Captain Hitsugaya," "Lieutenant Ise," they said in the same time. Both made sure they were not followed, before deciding that if they wanted to know what the other knew, they had to hide. The first thing she did when they were both inside a building was to look at his eyes. Finding what she was looking for, Toshiro pointed out, "So you have met them too?" She nodded. Showing off one of her irises she proved him she hadn't been affected.
"I suppose I have some luck," mentioned the captain. "I was just wondering what exactly happened to the head captain."
"Well, that was my question too." She motioned for him to sit down so she could fix his hands and side. "I was on an errand yesterday to find the missing reports from the seventh squad. When I came back he was gone. Now this is a current thing that he just disappears out of the blue, but he always gives me some hint as to where he is if i need to find him. There." She made the last knot and sat across from him.
"As there were no pressing matter for him to do that evening I didn't search for said sign. When he didn't come this morning things changed. We still have a lot of discussion about the newly opened hall in the first that needed to be dealt with before the end of the day. The only trace I found from him was his ribbon. He never lets go of that ribbon."
"When did you come in contact with the mindless zombies?"
"Well as I was certain something was up I asked around if anyone had seen him. This was at eight this morning. I have had my good share of things to do since then. Manly running away from the ones affected. I am not sure how he does it, but the man behind it must use some sort of kido that tricks the people into believing what he says is what they must do. Do you know anything else?" Toshiro's face was crisped. What kind of horror had this mad man been working on?
"I don't know his name, but the one behind it is someone I've come to known as Yin Yang. He has an abnormal fetish with opposites and have no problem killing for what he want. When I last met him I wasn't aware he could do something like this."
"An acquaintance of yours." Toshiro gritted his teeth, he made sure not to snap at the lieutenant.
"More like my mortal enemy. The faster he is dead the better." She looked at him for a moment before adding.
"What exactly did he do?"
"He is the one responsible for what happened the year I was gone. He is also the one responsible for killing nineteen of my subordinates on a mission to get to me. And as of right now he is the one who is about to kill Ryuu for whatever reason the mad man has." She must have been shocked for his shell to crack wide open like that.
"If he is as powerful as you insinuate, I would advise against searching for him. Is the man we are looking for tall, white and black hair and orange and blue eyes?" His expression was enough to clarify. "Currently he is not after Ryuu but has issued an order to kill both you and Kurosaki on sight. I might have been hidden in the grand hall during his long monologue on how his parents were killed."
"Well it doesn't change the fact that we are currently without a captain commander and have no way of warning the rest of the squads. I do wonder what exactly he is after."
"No matter," she said standing up. "We need to find a way to reverse this process before all the captains ends up killing each other."
…
That night she had been running through the streets toward the strangest shop in town after being woken up by the doll. Thinking about it she would never have thought of looking at the crystal had she not been warned about the horrible condition Ryuu was in. She had told her that immediately after his return to the soul society, his blood mass dropped, his heartbeat was slowing and even if she tried to compensate with her own warmth, the fact that he had lost his other zanpaktou made it impossible for her to come in contact with him.
The blue cristal had been shining like crazy. Now that was only supposed to happen when his energy was too high to control. She had seen it blink a few times before. Renji had told her that it was probably due to his outburst and it wasn't something they could take care of. But this, this was something else.
She hadn't bothered telling her dad where she was going, she just ran out the house in pyjamas and barefooted. She needed to get to soul society and she needed to get there now.
She had kept in contact with her zanpaktou that was currently trying her best to heat it up around him so no one died in the meantime. As she was running she remembered where she had this feeling from. This was Yin Yang. There were no one else in the world, dead or alive, that could make her this sick. Someone was high-jacking her boy's energy. Someone was using him.
As the doors opened up, she didn't exactly know how to convey the fact that hat and cloth needed to make a miracle happen and get her to soul society now. He did get it.
Ururu was still living there and made sure to give her some sleeping pills so she could sleep. After all, this was the last of sleep she would get. If the mission she was on went sideways, she would die. Not only that, but she might kill her boy in the process to.
She eventually slept anyway, even if she tried not to. She could hear the screams of the others, she remembered the smile of Greta as she told her about her stillborn child. She remembered the pain she felt when she saw her body fall to the ground. But most of all she still remembered the power and rage she had felt when tearing down the entire facility.
She awoke with a start when the doll came back to bring news. Apparently Ryuu hadn't slept for long so he hadn't caused any damage. She had however identified where the other zanpaktou was. A person had stolen it and had left it in a cave.
"Make sure you guide Ryuu there when you have the chance. I would need you back when we get to soul society." The doll could be annoying most times and say she wasn't the boss of her, but she did listen to what she had to say this time.
After that, Karin had just been laying on the ground looking at the ceiling thinking about what she was about to do.
"You'll take care of him if I don't come back, right?" she said when she was fed up with the way the newcomer was looking at her.
"I really wish there is a way for me to convince you not to go," said her dad as he sat down beside her. He was walking like a human. "Karin, you do realize what this would do to your body right?"
She just brushed it of. "Promis me?" she pleaded.
"Of course."
They sat in silence after that. The doll came back with the news of the explosion. Things were degrading. Ryuu had exploded. She told the master that she had tried everything she could to drag him to the cave, but it seems he was being told to go there on his own too. After he entered the cave, she had no control over him and couldn't even sense him.
As on reflex she looked at the crystal. It was still shining and by the way it was blinking, this was not good.
That was the moment Urahara came in, telling her he found a loophole for her.
"Time to go," she said to her father before walking towards the underground.
The room was empty. No senkaimon at all. "Is this a joke ?" she asked, mad at the owner of the shop.
"Now, now Karin dear, I always keep my promises. It will be here in a moment." As he said so he gave her a soul candy. "You better take care of my body while I'm gone," she growled at the now grinning figure of herself.
Sure enough a portal opened not long after.
"But," she started, "I'm not allowed to go through that."
"I said I found a loophole," smiled the man behind his fan. Soon two hell butterflies came out of the gate and out came an elegant woman dressed in a summer dress and a little version of said woman in an equal white dress. A matching set if it hadn't been for the difference in hair color. Isshin came tumbling down in joy.
"Wha-" Karin could only stare at the kid running from her mother and into Karin's fathers arms.
"Grampy," she said very loudly. Karin had to blink. Her eyes went from the the little kid to the mother.
"Are you kidding me?" she finally managed, outraged. Rukia only smiled. "Surprise."
"Can someone explain what is going on?" asked Karin.
"Two come out of the portal, two goes in," stated Urahara. "Simple math."
"But how are you allowed to be here?" raged Karin at the black haired woman. If any of these idiots got killed because of her, she would never forgive herself.
"Well," said Rukia, "I'm only visiting my family in the world of the living. I even have the permission from the head captain. And as I currently don't have any reiatsu, well not much any way, me crossing over isn't a problem."
"Wait a second," she pointed to the little kid, "My niece?"
"Mhm," smilled Rukia.
"And how come I can come with you back?"
"It's not like they know little Misaki's energy yet since she is so small, so anyone with a familiar energy can come back with me. Though we might meet the cleaner on the way as your energy is far too strong."
"Ah young minds, so easily fascinated," smiled hat and cloth, "But I think it would be wise not to push your luck and get going before your only way there closes."
The two women agreed. Rukia ran fast toward her daughter, gave her a hug and pointed a finger at Isshin. "No loosing her."
"I'll protect her with my life," he said. Happy, the mother came back. Before walking though she turned to Karin.
"Are you ready? I might need you to carry me."
"A few things before you go," said Urahara. "Remember to stay away from Hitsugaya. That is still a punishment in place. Make sure to only use the energy you need too. If you use too much you might die." She nodded even if her mind was only half with what he was saying.
Aw man what exactly had happened in soul society all these years? Letting the black haired on her shoulder, she ran as fast as she could to the other side. Don't die Ryuu.
Thank you for reading :D
I'm currently stuck in between assignments and school stuff... I have also got help from a friend to look over my numerous grammar mistakes. Hopefully it's better.
Until next time :)
