Tris POV
*a year and a half later*
Time has flown by since Tobias and I got married. It's been two and a half years since that special day. It's been a year and a half since Tobias graduated and six months since I did. As soon as Caleb presented Tobias with a job offer after his graduation, Tobias almost immediately applied. It took a few weeks but eventually Tobias was offered the job. I knew that he would get it. I remember talking to Caleb not long before Tobias graduated and him telling me a little bit about his job and about the job that Tobias eventually applied for. Caleb had never really told me in detail what he does but I always knew he was smart. He always did well in school and always wanted to learn new things. He had asked me if I thought Tobias would be interested in applying for a job at the company where he works and I said that I was sure that he'd definitely be interested. Although it seems to good to be true, Tobias does make good money from this job.
As for me, I recently found a part time job. However, I'm not so sure that I will be able to keep it for long. Over the past few days I haven't been feeling well and I have begun to suspect that I might be pregnant. I haven't told anyone yet because I haven't even taken any pregnancy tests yet. I bought a few different brands that are still unopened on my bathroom counter. If it turns out that I am pregnant I couldn't be more thrilled with the timing as Christmas is approaching. I would be able to surprise Tobias just as he surprised me three years ago when he proposed on Christmas Day.
I decide to take one just to get it over with. I follow the instructions and wait until it's ready. After a few minutes goes by I'm hesitant to look but eventually I take a deep breath and look down at the test. Two lines are clearly visible meaning it's positive. I wait a while and then decide to call the girls to come over since Tobias is at work. I don't tell them over the phone what's going on but they agree with curiousity.
Once they're all here we all sit on couch and they look at me expectantly.
"What's going on, Tris?" Shauna finally asks. "You sounded nervous on the phone. Please don't say that you and Tobias are having problems."
I shake my head. I get up and retrieve the test before sitting down again. I hold it up and the girls gasp and I am pretty sure I hear squeals.
"It's positive and I need to take a couple more just to make sure and I didn't wanna do the rest alone. I haven't told Tobias. If the rest come out positive I want to get an ultrasound as soon as possible and surprise him for Christmas."
The girls squeal again and tell me to take another test while they wait. I go into the bathroom and take the test. After another several agonizing minutes I pick up the test without looking at it and take it to show the girls.
"I haven't looked. Someone please just tell me what it says."
"There's a plus sign!" Christina says with excitement. "It's positive!"
I try to stay as calm as I can but can't help the smile that creeps up on my face. "Okay. I'm going to take one more. I'll be back in a few minutes."
When it's done, again, I don't even bother reading it and quickly hand it to Shauna this time.
"You're three for three, Tris." She says.
Tears escapes my eyes as the girls envelop me in a group hug. We proceed to have our own little celebration before Tobias gets home.
PAGE BREAK
I am in an exam room laying on the bed waiting to get an ultrasound. Christina and Shauna came with me. I am so excited and nervous at the same time. I hope I will be told that I am pregnant and that everything is okay. After waiting about 10 or 15 minutes a female technician enters the room.
"Beatrice Eaton?"
"Please call me Tris."
"Well, Tris, I'm Lydia White. So you are here to confirm whether or not you're pregnant."
"Yes. I took three at home tests. Different brands, all came out positive."
"Good and I have the results of your blood test as well and everything looks good. So let's see what the ultrasound shows."
She lifts the gown I'm wearing to expose my stomach and applies the cold gel before grabbing the wand.
"So will this be your first?"
"Yes. My husband and I have been married for a couple years now and we recently decided to start trying a for baby."
"That's great. I assume he didn't accompany you today?"
"No. I brought my friends. I wanted to surprise him. It's almost Christmas after all."
"What a wonderful idea. Well Tris, it looks like you will be giving your husband the perfect Christmas gift. There is your baby." She says, pointing to a dot on the screen. I smile big and start to tear up.
"Congratulations, Tris." She proceeds to tell me how far along I am and my estimated due date and instructions on how to maintain a healthy diet during my pregnancy, what prenatal vitamins to take and to call immediately if something feels wrong.
"I will print out the ultrasound pictures for you and then you'll be good to go and we will see you soon to see how things are coming along."
I thank her and change back into my clothes before taking the information she gave and going to the front desk to make a follow up appointment. I look over at Christina and Shauna and none of us can hold in our excitement, me especially.
PAGE BREAK
I am figuring out how I want to use the ultrasound photos to surprise Tobias, if I want to just put them in a frame or do something a little more elaborate. Eventually the idea comes to me to make a scrapbook photo album showcasing the timeline of our relationshop from the beginning to now by putting the ultrasound photos at the end.
We have a lot of photos from when we were dating and photos with our friends then photos with Evelyn. There are so many photos from our wedding and honeymoon to choose from as well.
I shop for a few other things for Tobias as well and spend time wrapping and adding to the scrapbook while he is at work. He has noticed something different with me but I always insist that I am fine. He knows that it's usually around the holidays when I miss my parents the most and is always there to hold me and comfort me.
One day, about a week before Christmas, I turn on the lights of our Christmas tree while Tobias has gotten our fireplace going. I look at the pictures on the mantle and grab the one of myself with my parents and Caleb when I was younger and affectionately run my fingers over it. As I am doing so I feel familiar, strong arms wrap around me as Tobias kisses my hair. I set the picture back in its place and look at the other pictures on the mantle which include our favorite wedding photo, our favorite engagement photo and a silly photo of us smiling and laughing in a photo booth from one of our many outings to Navy Pier.
I can sense Tobias following my gaze before I turn around in his arms to face him. He kisses my forehead softly and pulls back staring deep into my eyes, blue meeting gray.
"We're alright, you know. You and me. I promise you that we'll be alright. Always."
I think of the baby growing inside me and how it is a product of our love. I know when I tell Tobias that we are going to have a baby that he will be as happy as I am and that he will love our baby like I do already. I smile back at him before leaning up to meet his lips and I know deep in my heart and soul that he is right. We will be alright.
