This is the last chapter before the epilogue! I will probably say it again but I do wanna thank everyone who has followed, favorited, and reviewed this story over the last two years. I know that my uploading schedule was weird especially lately but I appreciate everyone who has stuck around. I hope to continue to improve my writing style - with or without a beta. After this I might slow down and write a one shot or two if an idea comes to me. This chapter will be up soon and I hope that anyone who hasn't left a review on the last few chapters, at least, will do so now.
Tobias POV
I've never enjoyed Christmas as much as I have since Tris came into my life. Every Christmas we have spent together has been special in its own way. They've gotten even more special since my mom and I reconciled as well. Now I truly know what it feels like to be with family for the holidays. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like with kids running around here. Not just mine and Tris' but any kids our friends might have in the future. Zeke told me that he is finally proposing to Shauna on New Year's Eve. Will and Christina got engaged over Thanksgiving and Uriah has plans to propose to Marlene on Valentine's Day.
Everyone is finally settling down, even my mother. She met a guy named Joe a few months before I graduated and he recently confided in me that he wants to propose to her hopefully this summer. He told me that he even though he is sure of his plans, he wants to wait a little bit longer before officially asking my mother to marry him. He is a great guy and I really care for him and he cares for me. I still visit Marcus several times a year including on his birthday, father's day and sometime within the month of December. It's always hectic around this time but Tris and I always make sure to find a day to visit the cemetery.
Joe knows what my mom and I went through and he has supported us and loved us unconditionally. Although I will always cherish the last moments I got to spend with Marcus, I look forward to making memories with Joe and finally knowing what it's like to have a father.
After our annual Christmas Eve dinner with my mom and Caleb and now Joe, Tris and I are always excited to spend a relaxing Christmas just the two of us. Tris has been acting different lately but she just said that she always wants every Christmas to be perfect. I feel like maybe it's her way of coping with that fact that her parents aren't here. She and I have started our own traditions but always make sure to somehow include the people we've lost as well.
On Christmas morning we wake up to yet another annual fresh snowfall. I'm holding Tris while she lays her head on my chest. She smiles up at me as I lean down to kiss her softly. We head downstairs and I turn on the lights of our Christmas tree. We sit on the floor and I grin at Tris who looks cute in her Christmas pajamas. She blushes and smirks at me.
Ever since I proposed we have started a tradition of each saving one big gift to open after dinner. At Christina's suggestion I planned a date night for us that includes everything Tris will need: a dress, jewelry, reservations to our favorite restaurant and a gift certificate to a spa for Tris before our date. Hopefully she will love it. I couldn't even begin to guess what she got me but I know I will love it no matter what.
After we open all of our gifts we make breakfast together. We make small talk as we eat. I see a hint of nervousness behind Tris' smile but I don't mention it. Instead we talk about our dinner last night as well as the dinner we have planned tomorrow with our friends. We still have a few gifts to wrap for our friends so we agree on doing that after we get ready for the day.
After we are done wrapping up those last gifts, I suggest to Tris that we go out in the yard and play in the snow. She laughs but agrees so we get changed into our warm winter clothes complete with hoodies and gloves and head out to the backyard. We build a snowman together and I can't help but laugh when Tris lays down in the snow and makes a snow angel. I take out my phone that is tucked away in my jacket pocket and take a photo of her as well as a photo of our snowman. At one point when Tris isn't looking I gather up some snow to make a snowball then throw it at her. She looks up at me with a shocked expression that turns into mock anger.
"Tobias Eaton, you sneaky bastard!" She laughs as she picks up some snow, makes a ball and throws it at me. I duck.
"Missed!" I laugh as she groans in frustration throwing another one at me, hitting me square in the chest. I begin to run back towards her as she squeals and tries to get away. As I get closer to her, I throw one hitting her. When I finally catch up to her I pull her into my arms and kiss her thoroughly. Before she can escape my grip I pull her with me as I fall backwards on to the ground. This causes a shriek from Tris before I bring my lips to hers again. After a few minutes we get up and wipe the snow off of us before heading back inside. Tris grabs my hand and leads me upstairs to our bathroon where we strip ourselves of our cold, wet, clothes and step into the warm shower.
We fool around a little bit but mostly just try to get warm. I can't help but bring my lips to her neck before kissing her forehead, nose, then her lips. We finally get out and dry off. Tris tells me that I can't see her outfit until she's ready so she goes into her walk in closet and closes the door. She assured me, however, that she won't be wearing a dress. I chuckle and nod before going into my own closet.
When I finish getting ready, which doesn't take me long, I head to the kitchen to check on the food that Tris has cooking in the oven and on the stove. I take out a bottle of wine as well as fill a pitcher with water then take out a Dauntless cake from the fridge and set it on the cake plate on the table. Tris already has the plates, glasses and silverware laid out so I begin setting the table. When I'm done I take a seat on the couch and surf through my phone looking at the pictures I took earlier. After a few minutes I hear a throat clear. I look up and my jaw drops. Tris stands before me in a sparkly, silk red blouse with black leggings, black flats and the diamond necklace and earrings that I gave her for our first anniversary. I stand up and step towards her. I pull her into my arms and kiss her lovingly.
"You look amazing, my love."
"You're looking pretty handsome yourself, Mr. Eaton."
"So, do you want wine or just water?"
"Ummm...just water. Not really in the wine mood tonight."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure."
"Okay."
I pour us both water as Tris brings the food to the table. Everything looks and smells delicious.
"So, did you have fun today?"
"I did. I can't remember the last time I played in the snow. We had never done it since we started dating. So I was surprised you suggested it today."
"That's true. I didn't really think of it before, honestly. It's another one of the many things I missed out on growing up."
"And that's okay, Tobias. Just remember that you're always moving forward."
"I know."
Soon we finish eating and clean up the kitchen before making our way back over to the couch in front of the tree. We go get our gifts for each other from their hiding spots. We laugh as we carry the stuff to the tree and sit in front of it.
"So, ladies first or...?"
"You can go first. If that's okay."
"Sure. So I kinda broke the rules a little bit. This is a three in one gift. It's all supposed to go together."
She chuckles. "That's fine."
I hand her the long box. I tried not to make it too hard to open.
"There's a note in there that you need to read first."
She nods as she lifts the box open and sets the top half aside before picking up the note and reading it.
To my beatiful Tris,
Merry Christmas, my love. In this box you will find a dress, matching jewelry and a gift certificate to a spa with the girls. I will be taking you out on a special date in two days. I hope you know how much I love and cherish you. You deserve to be treated like the amazing woman that you are.
I love you with all of my heart,
Tobias
When she finishes reading she looks up at me with tears in her eyes before removing the contents of the box. She pulls out the dress first which is a long, dark emerald green, sleeveless dress, then the matching earrings and necklace. She sets the gift card on the table. She then moves towards me.
"Thank you, Tobias. I love it and I love you."
"You're welcome, babe. I love you too."
She leans over to give me a chaste kiss and then sits back in her spot and pushes a box over to me. It's a decent sized box, not too big but not too small. I carefully begin to unwrap it. I open it and put my hands inside and pull out a large book of some sort. After getting a better look at it I realize it's a large scrapbook/photo album. On front there's a picture of us and the book is titled "Our beautiful life".
I flip through the first couple pages which contain various pictures of us when we first started dating. Several of them include us with our friends. Then the next pages are of photos that were taken a little further into our relationship. Some are of photos we already have in frames like our adventures to Navy Pier and other random, silly photos. Then the next ones are ones with my mom. There are a few of the same ones I included in the photo album I gave my mom a few years ago. The next set of photos are our engagement, wedding and honeymoon photos. Several pages are filled up with those ones and are towards the end of the album. All of the pages are labeled in some way matching the respective photos. When I turn to the last page I see something taped in the middle. The page is labeled "Baby Eaton coming soon". In the middle is an ultrasound photo. I gasp and look up at Tris, my mouth hanging slightly open. Tears are welling up in her eyes as she smiles.
"Is this for real?" I finally ask.
She nods her head as her tears start falling. "Yes, Tobias. We are gonna have a baby."
I carefully remove the ultrasound photo where it's loosely taped to the page and hold it in front me. After a minute or two I put it down and gently push the album aside as I gather Tris in my arms and kiss her fiercely.
"I can't believe we are really gonna have baby," I say when we pull apart for air. "I am literally the happiest and luckiest man on earth. I'm gonna be a dad and you're gonna be a mom. We really made this baby."
"Yes, Tobias. We did."
I slowly reach my hand out and place it on Tris stomach. She smiles at me as she places her hand over mine. I can't tear my eyes away from the ultrasound photo. I can't wait until I get to hold our baby in my arms and give it all the love I didn't get from Marcus. I already love my child so much.
That night I hold Tris close to me as we talk about what it will be like when our baby is here. I am so grateful for this life. Meeting Tris changed everything for me and I don't know what I would do without her. She is my everything and I look forward to many years by her side.
THE END
Once again, thank you to everyone who supported this story. I very much enjoyed writing it and am satisfied with how it turned out.
Stayed tuned for the epilogue!
