The merry sound of the court of Henry VIII didn't mix with the way that Regulus was feeling. He could hear the jaunty song that was being played and usually he would want to dance to it. He'd be out on the floor with his laughing brother, Sirius, dancing his heart out. But how could he dance his heart out when his parents had already torn it out.
"Aren't you going to dance?" the voice of the one person who could cheer him asked from behind him.
Turning to take in Barty's smiling face, he allowed himself a moment to think of the right answer to tell the straw-blonde haired man. He couldn't just come out and tell him that their time together as a couple had come to an end. Especially not standing out in the hallway like this, where anyone could walk upon them and discover what was going on.
"Just not feeling like dancing tonight, is all," he settled for telling the first lie that popped into his head.
"That's not like you. My Regulus would be out there dancing no matter what was going on. What has you acting so strangely?"
Regulus took Barty by the hand, a deep blush coloring his face, and drug him out to a grand balcony where they wouldn't be overheard. He sighed. "You know that it would be frowned upon if you were to be overheard calling me your Regulus," he chided Barty.
"I thought we didn't care what they thought of us," Barty said looking taken aback. "I thought they couldn't tear us apart. What changed between last night and today?"
"My parents have betrothed me to one of their friends' children."
Barty started to laugh at this. He looked at Regulus expected the younger Black brother to join in. But when Regulus didn't start laughing he sobered up. "What do we do?"
"There isn't anything we can do," Regulus sighed. "The wedding is to take place on the King's birthday and nothing is going to stop it."
"But can't you just tell them that…"
"I did. They don't care." Regulus took Barty's hand. "Let's not think about that right now." The music drifted from the doors leading to the balcony. He smiled at Barty and held out his hand. "For right now, I just want to dance with the man I love more than anything in the world."
As the music surrounded them and Barty pulled Regulus against his chest, the world seemed to disappear. It was just them and the music for a few moments. The highest of the high notes felt like the best moments in their relationship. The lowest of notes felt like the lowest of times in their relationship.
But like all moments in life, it wasn't meant to last. A loud shriek was heard from the doorway to the balcony. Regulus looked up to find his parents staring at him in abject shock and horror. The pretty blonde girl he was to marry peered over their shoulders, a look of pure loathing on her face.
Regulus looked back forlornly as he was drug from the balcony. He didn't think he could ever love another like he loved Barty. He didn't think he'd ever have another moment of pure enjoyment like that in his entire lifetime again.
I hope you all enjoyed Take Time to Dance as much as I enjoyed writing it.
