Light knocked on the door, waiting for the usual invitation. The former task force building seemed a completely different place following the Kira investigation, though the team was for the most part the same, as well as a few new faces brought in by Watari from time to time. He shifted the blue gift back in his hand, glancing behind him.
"Come in." The male voice called from inside the office. Light grabbed the handle, pushing the door open and stepping inside. He closed the door behind him, making his way over to the desk where his father was currently seated.
"Light, you're here early today, is everything all right?" The older man asked with slight concern, motioning for his son to sit. Light lowered himself into the chair, placing the bag beside him on the floor.
"Fine." He said. "Better actually. I kind of need to ask you something." Soichiro sighed.
"Son, if this is about L, You'd be better off talking to Watari, he'd know better than anyone how to handle-"Light shook his head.
"It's not that, well, it kind of- he agreed."The younger man replied. "He finally agreed and I need you to let me have the day off for Valentine's Day." He waited for the response.
"He did, did he?" The former chief asked in surprise. Light smiled.
"Yeah I know, I couldn't believe it either. It took me a long time to get this far and if I mess this up he won't give me a second chance. If you could just this one time help me out, you have no idea what it would mean to me."
"Big plans?" Soichiro asked.
"Not really, just spending some time together. We're still taking things slow,I promised to watch a movie with him and I guess we'll see where it goes. He's still getting used to everything and I really don't want to overwhelm him."
"That's probably for the him show you what he's ready for. Relationships are meant to be taken slowly. Take your time in getting to know each other better, they can be tough."
"I know. This is the first time I've ever felt like this for anyone, I'm not going to rush into anything."
"Good. I think we can get along without you for the day. You two have been doing a lot of overtime lately, you deserve a break."
"Thanks, Dad. I really appreciate this. I know he will too. " Light stood up, suddenly recalling the gift.
"Dad, can I ask just one more favor?"
"What is it?" The younger man lifted the bag, placing it on his father's desk.
"Can you hold this for me, I'd take it home but he'd find it and it's supposed to be a surprise. I'll stop in and get it from you in the morning." Soichiro shook his head but took hold of the object, placing it under his desk.
"What is it?"
"I got him a chocolate fountain, I'm going to get some strawberries and a couple other things so we can have them while the movie's on. I just hope it's not too much for a first Valentine's day together."
"I'm sure he'll enjoy that. " Soichiro said. "By the way, Light.."
"Yeah?" Light turned back to face his father.
"Your mother wants me to invite you three to dinner Sunday night, she's making your favorite. I know how L feels about social situations, we'll understand if you decide-"
"I'll be there. I'll talk to L and Watari, I'm sure I can get them to come with me."
"Let him know it's just the family and I'll remind your mother and sister about their greeting." Light gave a short nod.
"I will."The younger man crossed the short distance to the door, placing a hand on the knob.
"And Light?" His father called once more, catching his son's attention.
"Yeah?'
"Good luck, Son. " Light smiled.
"Thanks, I'll need it." Light exited the room, closing the door and making his way down the hallway. He stopped at the heavy door which led to the staircase and soon found himself on the roof where L waited for was an unusually warm day, feeling more like spring than winter. Light noticed the chairs and small folding table, the bags from his favorite restaurant placed on top. He moved closer, greeting the older man with a hug.
"You didn't have to-"
"I don't have to do a lot of things, I do them because I want to. I picked last week. Of course if you would rather-"
"This is perfect. I look forward to our lunch dates all week. It's hard to get a moment alone with you when we're at work, even when we're home, sometimes you're still busy." Light released L, both men took their seats.
"I realize even now that you and I are living together, I'm not as available to you as you would like me to be."
"It would be nice to have more time with you but I understand.I knew when I asked you to stay that you'd still be into your work." Light replied. He hadn't expected L to give up his entire life and from the moment his father and Watari made their deal to merge their agency with Watari's organization, he knew it would only be more difficult for the two of them.
"I was going to tell you this on our movie night, but I suppose now is just as good. Watari and I have had a talk. Though I will still be working cases, I have decided to pass some of the work onto Near and Mello. That will allow me to give more focus to you and building our relationship."
"You'd do that?"Light asked in awe.
"I will. I want you to know that although you and I show our love in different ways, you are still important to me. It's something that I'm still working on being able to show you more of what you would like us to be. Compromising is vital to making any relationship work, so I've heard. "
"This is great. You know, I'm really proud of you." Light praised. "You've been taking some big steps with this. You're slowly letting yourself out of your comfort zone and that's amazing. We're both still learning, with every new relationship, there are new experiences and you learn from each other."
"I am proud of you as well, Light. You've turned yourself around. I imagine such a change is difficult to make." Light nodded.
"Yeah, but if you have someone there backing you up when you need it, it helps a lot. It means the world to me that you believed in me the way you did."
"As I've told you, some people do the wrong things for the right reasons. To make the world a better place is a good thought, but you didn't exactly go about it in the best way. I watched you make those changes and take the advice given to you. It takes a lot to go from what you were doing to what you have now. As long as you continue on this path,"
"You don't have to worry about that,I'd never do anything to jeopardize what we have, you mean too much to me and I hope you know that."
"If I thought otherwise, I would never have pulled you aside to speak to you. "
"Yeah, you'd probably just have Watari shoot me in the face." Light said half jokingly as they began to enjoy their lunch.
"That's ridiculous, Light. Watari would never shoot you in the face, he'd aim higher. "Light shook his head.
"Nice."Light said sarcastically. "So you never told me, what are we going to watch?"
"You'll have to wait."
"Not even a hint?"
"No, are you reconsidering?"
"No, just curious. I talked to my dad today, I took Valentine's day off, did you tell-"
"Watari knows I'm staying home. We talked about it after you asked me. "
"Good. I'm really looking forward to this, our first full day together that's not work related."the pair sat in silence for a moment before Light spoke again.
"So, what else do you want to-"
"I have a few ideas." L said shortly.
"But you're not going to let me in on your secret are you?"
"No, I'm not. You'll have to be patient and see what happens,my plans are subject to change depending on how it works out. I think you'll find them...intriguing." Light said nothing, going through a list of possible ideas L could have for them. Whatever it was, Light was just glad for the opportunity to do it together.
