Chapter 39: Preperations

Hanzo groaned when he heard the wolf pup howling from the other end of the practice range. »What is it now?«

He increased his pace.

»How many times do I have to tell her to just wake me up before she rushes off to who knows where?«, he silently growled. »I am not one for sleeping into anyways.«

The Shimada expected to hear training sounds. Clashing weapons or shooting but … instead there was yelling. Very loud yelling. And northern curse words he was glad he did not learn yet.

Hanzo rolled his eyes. »So the cowboy is pestering her again … «

He knew better than to get in between, so he just sat down next to the puppy. »You ruined another shirt of mine, you little demon. Just that you know it.« The pup looked up to him with big eyes and whined.

»That won't work. I am spoken for.«

The whining got louder.

»I am not even a wolf person!«

The puppy eyes got an incredibly sad touch.

»Don't tell anyone. I have reputation«, Hanzo sighed before gently petting him.

It was fortunate that he chose to sit down, because the next moment an axe flew over his head … She is very angry, it seems …

»Hey! Will you watch, where you throw those things?! This hat is worth a fortune!«, the cowboy roared.

»Don't be ridiculous, Jesse. That old dirty thing is not even worth being picked up!« Ýri sounded far from sorry.

»You really have some temper, woman. May I suggest you reining yourself in a little?«, Jesse was not less enraged.

Oh, wrong thing to say, cowboy, very wrong, Hanzo chuckled.

»That you have to tell me?! Seriously?! You know what?! I will be calm and quiet like a cat, if you stop bothering me!« And there the spitfire of a Viking erupted.

»You know felines in heat can be very … noisy … «, Jesse replied in a dry tone.

Even Hanzo had to choke on that in his remote corner. He could hear the clang of something else – was that a pole? - being thrown through the practice range.

»One more witty line like that and you can swim after your precious hat with which you are covering the little brain you have!«

She is even more fearsome than a dragon …

»Ýri, really! Can't an old trusted friend just bring up his concerns?«

Can this old trusted friend of hers just hold his tongue? I mean, where was he the last few years, when I was the one protecting her? When I stayed by her side?

»I did not hear my father having concerns or my uncle or brother. I also don't hear anyone else in that blighted base making a ruckus about this but you!«

Well, not yet at least. Though Hanzo could imagine his brother having one or two things to say on this matter, once he was done with his teasing.

»He is a Shimada! A cold-blooded assassin!«, Jesse brought up his favorite point and Hanzo shook his head.

Cowboy, that is a very old horse. It has been ridden to death, its ashes scattered in all winds, let it rest.

»So was Genji and now he is your best drinking pal«, Ýri replied. Though Hanzo knew his brother and the cowboy shared a close friendship, he had a hard time imagining them doing something different than drinking.

»That is not the point! Genji is different! But this man is a beast! He is capable of everything!«, Jesse yelled back at her and Hanzo's hands became fists.

Stop, while you still can, cowboy.

»A beast in the sheets. I certainly don't mind that«, Ýri said and Hanzo choked and then chuckled right after.

»Ýri, that Shimada is dangerous! He is not safe to get involved with!« Obviously McCree was running out of arguments.

»On the contrary. I feel very safe with him.« Ýri's rage seemed to have cooled off, but Hanzo knew her better than that.

»He is brutal, he is ruthless, he is-«, Jesse continued and Hanzo rolled his eyes.

»He is my mate and belongs to me and all your insults won't change my mind, so spare your breath!«, she yelled and Hanzo looked up. A smile lit his face.

»Could you just listen to me for one moment?!«, Jesse tried again.

»No! I am not interested in what you have to say!« Hanzo sensed her patience running thin.

»If you will just let me-«

Ýri did not grant the cowboy the smallest chance. »Is the end of your rant in sight already?!«

»I will talk to Winston! He will never allow the Shimada here!«

This time Hanzo heard her pause and that twisted his stomach. He did not have a chance to speak with the big guy yet, but … what if the cowboy was right and the current head of the organization won't allow him to stay? Would she send him away? Now that they were finally together? He hated to admit it, but it would certainly break his heart.

»If you cast him out, I will go with him«, her voice was cold but determined. His heart leaped up again.

»And tie yourself down to a fugitive without a future?«, Jesse sounded as if he was finally giving up.

»Not something I fancy, but if Overwatch fails, we will all be fugitives, so where is the difference?« She sounded so tired of this conversation, Hanzo himself was about to walk in and end it.

»Ýri, please … « Now Jesse really seemed worried.

»No, Jesse, no! Stop belittling me! This is my decision and the only opinions counting here are Hanzo's and mine!«

»I give up, you stubborn woman! Just go! Run into your misery head first!«

Of course the cowboy had to walk past him, when he left the area. Hanzo glared up to him and could hardly suppress a feral growl. McCree only snarled back and walked on.

A very mature conversation indeed … Nevertheless, the pup had raised his head in a very interested, attentive manner.

Hanzo looked down to him. »What?«

The little one growled at him playfully.

»That was a dragon's growl. Not a wolf's.«

He got to his feet and dared to approach her. The dummies obviously were her favorite victims of her left over rage.

»Jesse, again? «, she sounded annoyed. »How many times do I have to tell you off?!«

»A few times more for sure«, Hanzo whispered and she turned around surprised. »I did not mean to pry, but … Would you really do that? Leaving all this behind again … because of me?«

She nodded.

The feelings rushing through him were hard to describe. His heart seems to flow over with joy and love for this fierce woman. He made two more steps up to her and pulled her into his arms. He raised her chin so his lips found hers easily meeting them for a gentle kiss, which grew rough and passionate very fast.

»I did not thought you the type for openly displayed affection«, she giggled.

»I don't care«, he panted initiating another kiss, his fingers trailing over the dragon mark on her neck.

»Maybe … we should move to our quarters«, she breathlessly suggested.

A short huff from the ground turned both their attention to the wolf at their feet.

Hanzo groaned. »Seriously?«

Ýri laughed picking the pup up and leading their way. Hanzo followed.

Is she swaying her hips like that on purpose? Damn, that woman drives me crazy.

It did not matter if Overwatch or anyone in this base accepted him. Her approval was all he needed.

»Hey, are you still mad at me?«, Genji asked Jesse when he saw him again.

Genji received a glare followed by the word »arse« to which he rolled his eyes.

»Really? It's been days already. And it's not even my fault your talk with Ýri went so bad. You were the one who woke her up to shout at her«, he defended himself.

»You could have told me your brother came back to make a move on her again!«, Jesse ranted while opened the beer he just got himself from the fridge in the main kitchen.

»Why? You only would have had your shouting match with her earlier. By the way: It was so loud we could hear it all the way to our quarters and we have the ones furthest away.«

Jesse grumbled and took a large swing of his beer.

»I can't understand why she is all over that guy. He is a freaking Shimada assassin.«

Genji shrugged. »So was I and we get along great. Most of the time anyway.«

»But you were always the rebel in your family. Hanzo looks and acts like the perfectly bred Shimada heir. I am just worried about her, why can't she understand that?«

He sighed. »Ýri is a grown woman. She makes her own decisions even if you may not like them.«

Jesse leaned against the counter. »I know. I just thought … I finally found the girl I want to settle down with, you know.«

He walked over and patted his shoulder. »Maybe you will as soon as my brother messes it up again.«

That got him a half-hearted laugh. »You bet he will. He can brag all he wants, but in the end, he still has no clue about what a woman really wants.«

Now it was his turn to chuckle. »I can't wait until that happens.«

Jesse took another swing. »Promise me you'll share any embarrassing details with me?«

He smirked. »As always. The best about this is that I can tease him about the whole relationship thing. Finally I can get back at him for all the shit he put me through when we were kids.«

Jesse chuckled. »That's something at least«, he took out another beer and offered it to him.

For a moment Genji was honestly tempted, but then he declined with a headshake. »Can't.«

Jesse stared at him surprised. »What? What's wrong with you now? You never say no to a good drink.«

»First: that is in no way a good drink. Just cheap booze to get drunk with after missions. Second: I have big plans for tonight and doing them drunk might give off the wrong impression«, he said.

»Can't deny the first one, that's why I'm drinking it right now«, Jesse relented and then continued, »Since when are you worrying about impressions?«

Genji felt himself blushing. »Well … «

Now a big grin spread over his friend's face. »Now that I have to hear.«

»Pah. It's nothing new. Tonight I plan to ask her«, Genji told him.

Jesse laughed and then opened the bottle he still had in his hand. »Oh, if that's all.«

Genji couldn't help his nerves from showing themselves again. »How can you say that so casually?! I've been so worried sick lately!«

Jesse rolled his eyes. »Yeah. I noticed. The whole base has noticed. And Shizuka of course.«

Genji sank into himself. »I know. She keeps asking me over and over again if I am alright. I think she is even planning to trap me into the medbay for a check-up.« He shuddered. Those were never fun, not even when his little priestess was doing them. She always was so thorough and not in the good way …

»Then it's a good thing you are asking her tonight«, his friend teased.

»I hope so. In my desperation, I even asked Lena to help me«, Genji confessed.

Jesse choked on his beer so hard, Genji had to pat his back to get him to stop coughing.

»Y-you w-what?!«, the cowboy finally got out.

»Don't look at me like that! I wanted to make sure it will be absolutely perfect!«, Genji tried to defend his actions.

»Then you shouldn't have asked Lena! She will turn this into a pink nightmare!«

Genji paled. »Oh gods, I did not … please no!«

Jesse laughed. »It's your own fault for leaving her in your quarters without supervision.«

Genji nodded. »I better get back right away.«

»Why are you even in the kitchens in the first place?«, Jesse wanted to know.

»For this,« he answered and pulled a bowl of strawberries out of the fridge, »You know how much Shizuka loves strawberries. I bought them especially for this occasion.«

Jesse emptied his bottle. »It's a wonder they survived for so long without anyone eating them.«

Genji grinned. »That's why I put them in a box labeled cabbage soup.«

Jesse burst out laughing. »Good thinking, pal. No-one in his right mind would think about opening that.«

»If you will excuse me now, I have to salvage whatever Lena messed up in the short time I was gone«, he continued.

»Sure«, Jesse said and patted his shoulder. »Good luck my friend. Although I think you will have more trouble with reigning in Lena again than with Shizuka not saying yes.«

»I dearly hope so«, Genji admitted.

Now it was Jesses turn to grin. »And as soon as she said yes you can pin her on the bed and have the night of your lives.«

Genji rolled his eyes but couldn't stop the smile. »That's something to look forward to, but I think I will save the night of our lives for the actual wedding night.«

»Suit yourself«, his friend said, raising his arm with the empty bottle in a toast.

They said good-bye with Genji promising to give him the details when they next saw each other. Now he was on his way back to his quarters with a lighter spirit and a big bowl of strawberries hoping Lena didn't go too crazy in the time he was gone.

»Lena, please tell me there is nothing pink in the house«, he said as he opened the door. What he saw shocked him.

Nothing had changed. At all. Their living room looked just like it always had. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Even Shizuka's medical equipment still laid on the coffee table.

Genji didn't know what to say. He had braced himself for anything, but not that. In that moment Lena's head popped out of the kitchen.

»Oh hey Genji. Perfect timing. I just finished preparing the other snacks.«

Numbly he handed her the bowl. »How in the world did you manage to leave everything in tact?«

»Oh, love. A perfect proposal is all about the surprise. That's why I only decorated the bedroom accordingly.«

Now the dread came back full force and he all but raced up the stairs to see the horror for himself. Only to be shocked speechless again.

A few candles here and there were giving the room a warm glow, music was quietly playing in the background, the bed was made with a single red rose laying on top of it right next to the box with the ring.

And not a single thing was pink. If he weren't so grateful, he would have wondered if Lena was broken, but at this moment he didn't care.

»Thanks Lena, it's perfect.«

Lena grinned. »Always happy to help love. Told you I would handle it.«

He smiled. »You did. I owe you one.«

She waved him off. »Just make her happy. That's all I asked.«

His smile grew. »I plan to.«

»Good«, she said and then all of a sudden shoved him back towards the door, »Now go and bring her here! Her shift at the medbay is almost over!«

»Alright, alright!« And just like that he found himself outside again.

With a headshake he made for the med bay. His nerves slowly making themselves known again as he waited for Shizuka to emerge. Thankfully it didn't take long.

She looked surprised to see him.

»Genji? Is everything alright?«, she asked.

»Of course. Never better. Can't a boyfriend pick up his girl from work now and then?«, he answered hoping his nervousness wasn't too obvious.

She smiled. »Sure. I am always happy to see you.«

He put an arm around her and began leading her back to their quarters.

»I hope you have nothing planned for the evening?«, he asked.

»Not yet«, she smirked, »Why? Do you have something in mind for tonight?«

»You could say that«, he answered and opened the door for her.
