Chapter 44: The hunt is on

»I am going and that is final!«, Ýri yelled.

Genji winced at the volume, even when he was still two hallways away. He already knew what this was about. This kind of fight had been going on for the last couple of weeks. Gods know why …

And on cue he heard his love's voice matching Ýri's voice evenly, despite being such a small woman.

»No, you are not!«, Shizuka shouted back.

Lately these two had been fighting about every mission Ýri wanted to go on – and Shizuka refused her to. He rolled his eyes and changed course towards the source of the angry female fury.

Shizuka hadn't been specific about why she wanted to keep the Viking from going on missions, but she had asked Genji to trust her on this. So he did. His little priestess always had a reason for acting the way she did. Usually they were good and sound reasons too. She wanted to talk to Ýri about it first, before she would tell him all about it. Only the waiting was killing him.

Somehow Ýri avoided every attempt at talking and Hanzo was too busy compensating for his insecurities and lack of marriage with fucking Ýri at every opportunity. So, they all seldom saw each other outside of missions anymore. And Genji appreciated it for Ýri's moods seemed to swing from one extreme to the other these days.

»I am! You need me there!«, Ýri yelled on.

Finally he made it to the room. Just as Shizuka, his usually so sweet little fluff, showed the side of herself that was trained by one Gabriel Reyes.

He may didn't like the man, but he was the one, who taught his wife to fend for herself and survive. Something he was very grateful for.

»You will stay here or I swear to the spirits I will tie you to the med bay bed for the next weeks! And I will keep Hanzo out the whole time!«

»You wouldn't dare!«, now his brother piped up.

Genji hadn't even noticed him where he had been leaning against the wall. Winston, Brigitte and Mercy were there as well, watching the verbal match.

»Oh I will!«, Shizuka challenged him.

With a small smirk, Genji wrapped his arms around her from behind and put his chin on her head.

»What's the problem this time, love?«

She huffed, but leaned into his hold. »She is being stubborn again.«

»Me?! You're the one who has been making a ruckus for no reason!«, Ýri shot back.

He sighed. Those fights were getting old fast. »Which mission is it this time?«

Now it was Winston's turn to speak up. »We got a call for help from someone. He is in desperate need of medical resources and help out in Florence. So he contacted Mercy and Shizuka. Apparently they know each other.«

»We're all working in the medical field. You are bound to hear about those that stick out because of their brilliance«, Mercy interjected coldly. »Baptiste is a good man.«

Hanzo stiffed. »He is a Talon agent.«

»A former Talon agent«, Mercy countered. »That's why they are hunting him. Just like they hunt you now.«

Genji pulled Shizuka a little closer. He didn't like the thought of his wife throwing herself into danger. »But Venice is a known Talon base. How the hell did he manage to get stuck so close to it?«

The doctor shrugged. »Such things happen. Sometimes you need to take risks in order to achieve your goals.«

He rolled his eyes, but before he could open his mouth, Ýri cut in again.

»And that's exactly why I should accompany them to keep them safe.«

Now Hanzo was protesting. »And who is keeping you safe?«

She puffed up her chest. »I can take care of myself.«

Shizuka shook her head. »We will be fine and stay low. This is not a battle, this is just a mission to provide humanitary aid.«

»All the more reason I should come!«, Ýri went on.

Winston spoke up too. »We can't just send all our healers into enemy territory! Not with only one tank to accompany them.«

»I am sure you could call on Ana«, Mercy said.

»That was not my point!«, Winston growled.

»Then I will go with them«, Genji spoke up.

»What?!«

That came from Winston, Mercy and Hanzo simultaneously.

»What?«, he asked, »I agree that they will need the protection and everyone else is already on their own missions.«

Winston came closer. »Oh no! No, no, no! You know the rules, Genji. No couples on missions.«

»Fuck that stupid rule of yours«, Genji deadpanned.

»I wouldn't mind Genji coming along. He can help with the lifting«, Shizuka argued in his case.

He hugged her tighter with a happy grin.

»We don't need him«, of course Mercy had to ruin it.

»I am not going to carry all of the supplies by myself, that's for sure«, Brigitte said.

Genji shot her a grateful look.

»Besides. We aren't supposed to fight at all here. Just get in, help him out and leave again. Genji is good at stealth«, Shizuka added.

He kissed her head.

»So there is no reason why I shouldn't come too«, Ýri spoke up.

Shizuka hesitated, but finally relented. »But no heavy lifting for you. Are we clear on that?«

Ýri groaned. »Fine.« And under her breath added. »Mother hen.«

Now Shizuka was glaring at her again. He squeezed her gently, a silent nudge to let it be. And thankfully she did.

Winston grumbled for a long while before he finally gave in. »Alright, alright. But just this once.«

»Wonderful«, Genji grinned. »So Shizuka, Brigitte, Mercy, Ýri and me.«

His wife playfully nudged him. »Don't get any ideas love.«

He chuckled. »Don't worry. I only have eyes for you.«

»Ugh«, Hanzo growled. »Take that disgustingly sweet talk somewhere else.«

»Now that I know it annoys you, not a chance«, Genji cheerfully shot back.

»Well, if my brother is going, so am I«, Hanzo stated calmly.

»What?!«, this time it were Ýri and Genji, who made the shocked exclamation.

Winston just let out another defeated groan.

»Why do you want to go all of a sudden?«, Ýri asked.

»Because Genji goes too and I want to protect you«, his brother stated evenly.

Mercy shook her head. »We don't need you either. And you were supposed to keep your involvement with us a secret, remember?«

Hanzo shrugged. »So? This is a stealth mission, right? We won't be seen at all. And I have great skill in going about undetected.«

Genji discreetly coughed a »yeah sure« in Shizukas ear which made her try to stifle her giggles.

»And I can always sneak abort the ship shortly before departure«, Hanzo finished his case.

By now Winston was in the corner definitely not crying over the »teamcombo«.

Genji chuckled. »You might as well let him come with us. Or he will whine into your ear until we are back again.«

»Just go«, came the weary reply from the big guy.

Mercy was less than amused judging by her completely neutral face. She honestly scared Genji sometimes. No idea why Shizuka is so fond of her … oh right, she practically is her mother … worst mother in law. Ever.

»Then what are we waiting for?«, Ýri enthusiastically exclaimed and was already on her way out the door. Hanzo following her like a shadow as always.

Genji rolled his eyes. Apparently it was not enough anymore that she had one or two dragons and part-time wolves constantly curled around some part of her body. No, the man himself had to tail her like his spirits.

Hypocrite

Shizukas cheeky thought resonated through their bond.

He gave her a questioning look. In answer she just stroked over the dragon on her shoulders and their still intertwined hands.

He blushed.

We are married. So, I am allowed to do that.

He felt her amusement flowing through him and lifting his own mood.

Wordlessly they followed the others to the shuttle.

Hanzo did not like it one bit. None of it. He glanced at Ýri again and again from his spot in the shuttle but she avoided looking at him – what just added to his worries. What secret was she sharing with Genji's little- … wife. Hanzo could still not believe it. His brother of all people.

Still, what was it Ýri was so determined to keep from him? Did she want to get rid of him? But why? What had he been doing wrong? One of his dragons had shaped into a large white wolf again and placed his head in her lap releasing worried huffs from time to time. Just like his master. Ýri did not shove the spirit off though, she even started petting it gently while lost in her own thoughts.

Mhmm … maybe I didn't do anything wrong though. But what is she keeping then? Some health issues?

Something so bad that Shizuka kept fussing over her all the time and Ýri refused to tell him.

Kuso. I am going stir crazy in here.

Hanzo continued his brooding until he felt the shuttle's touch-down. Florence. Not one of his favorite cities but the buildings gave grant opportunities for sneak attacks … but what Hanzo once thought an advantage was worrying him even more now. So many possibilities for his enemies … their enemies – Ýri's and his – to hide and engage them.

He couldn't remember the last time he had been that restless and worried – except that it had her involved. It always involved her. As if his entire being was focused on her since they first met. He left the shuttle after the others and tried to keep some distance for Ýri not to feel beset by him. He kept a close eye on her though.

Damn, woman. You have changed me. A lot. And now nothing terrifies me so much than the mere thought of getting separated from you … or losing you. … I cannot lose you …

»Hanzo?«

»Yes?«, he looked back at his brother.

»What is wrong?«, Genji asked now worried, because his brother was worried.

»Nothing really. Just some silly thoughts«, Hanzo vaguely replied.

»Then skip that brooding and focus«, Mercy ranted at them.

For some reason the bitchy devil also seems rather nervous … or I am just confusing it with my own feelings?

»So what is your plan? Running around in Florence and asking peasants for … what was his name?«, Genji started.

My, my, my. How did my brother end up as a »successful« overwatch member? … sometimes he just has no clue.

»Baptiste. His name is Baptiste and he gave us a meeting point in the message«, the Hikari replied.

Ah. That is where his pants had gone. … And his brains …

»What does he mention?«, Hanzo asked.

»The cathedral.«

Hanzo rolled his eyes. »There are plenty around.«

»Well … the big one … ?«, the little healer answered.

Damn, they really deserve each other.

»Santa Maria del Fiore?«, Hanzo asked.

Shizuka looked at him confused. »How did you know?«

He shrugged. »Because it is the big one?«

Ýri glanced at him. »Damn, your Italian pronunciation is spot on.«

»Well, I got around in the world«, Hanzo shrugged again. »So where exactly is your meeting point?«

»Santa Maria del Fiore«, Shizuka said.

»Yes, I get that, but do you know how large that thing is? That man must have given you something more to work with!« Hanzo shook his head. This mission was prone to fail. I better focus on getting Ýri back out unharmed, when a fight occurs …

Shizuka just started walking off into – so it appeared to him – random direction.

»What are you doing?«, Hanzo shouted after her.

»Find the cathedral?«, she answered sheepishly.

»Well, it is the exact opposite direction«, Hanzo couldn't keep himself from rolling his eyes.

»Oh!« She turned around. »Well, excuse me for never being in this city before.«

Hanzo sighed. »Meeting in the middle of the night with barely any tourists or civilians to blend in. I just hope we don't have to climb it to find your contact.«

»Climb the cathedral?«, Shizuka asked. »Did you do that?«

»Once or twice«, Hanzo confessed.

»I wonder what else he conquered«, Genji mocked him.

»You better-« Hanzo noticed the red dot right on his brother's forehead. »GET DOWN!«

The shot was fired and sent back to its owner thanks to Genji's quick reflexes.

»It seems like we got company«, Brigitte went for her shield.

»Indeed. Up there«, Mercy pointed on one of the surrounding roofs.

» … so it is a trap … « Hanzo drew his bow and released a salve of quick arrows up to the hooded figure, but it vanished into the shadows.

»Reaper … «, he hissed and started looking around.

»So I guess the sharpshooter is someone we know as well … «, Ýri bared her blade.

»Indeed … «, Hanzo retreated towards her, shielding her with his body from the front and sending his dragons out to guard her back.

»What are you doing?!«, his mate snarled at him. »How shall I be able to fight like that?!«

»You know as well as I do that that bitch loves to use you for target practice!«, he yelled back.

»You seem to confuse your role, Hanzo! I am the one at the front, so be a good archer and get some high ground!«

»I won't until you are telling me, what is wrong with you, so deal with it!«

»Hanzo! Careful!«, he heard his brother shout and dodged a mysteriously floating orb just in time. »Moira … «, Hanzo whispered.

Mercy looked up. »They were expecting us.«

»So it was a trap after all?«, Brigitte joined them and the Overwatch members formed a circle standing back to back now.

»No«, Shizuka answered. »I sense more. Someone is fighting. Just down the street.«

»I would rather like you to sense on how outnumbered we are«, Hanzo said while he kept scanning the roof tops for any movements.

»Ehhhh … brother?«, Genji seemed suddenly irritated.

»Now is not the time!«

»Obviously yes, but … your wolves are chasing those orbs … «

»What the-«, Hanzo mentally called back his wayward spirits and commanded the wolves to scout the nearest roofs instead.

»So what is the plan now?«, Brigitte wanted to know. »Is someone good at improvising?«

»You are sure that Baptiste is a … good one?«, Genji asked his wife.

»Yes. And I feel fighting over there.«

»Alright«, Mercy took a deep breath. »Hanzo. You and Ýri keep Widowmaker busy since she will most likely focus on you anyways. We others will investigate the fighting over there.«

»And for how long do we distract her?«, Hanzo wanted to now.

»Five minutes. Then we return to the shuttle. With Baptiste or without him«, Mercy ordered.

»On the count of three«, Genji said. »One, two-«

They split up their formation. Hanzo and Ýri ran from the fighting, the others right to it. But three loud shots, Shizuka's scream and Genji's yelling distracted them. But Hanzo and Ýri had no time to help. Widowmaker was already upon them. Ýri had to dodge another shot.

»Splitting up was the dumbest thing to do!«, she cursed the others. »Hanzo! Reaper is on them! Shizuka and your brother!«, Ýri told him. »We have to help them!«

»Seems like Brigitte and Mercy did not get any further as well. We better retreat. Now«, Hanzo suggested.

»We still have four minutes!«

The shadow manifested and disintegrated again and again. Though Genji was fast as a green lightening strike it seemed as that he still couldn't keep Reaper from his wife. Moira fired one orb after another and while Brigitte barely had time to shield Mercy, the healer had switched to her gun.

»Now she is even more useless«, Hanzo groaned. Another shot from a different direction. He felt it only a few inches from his face aiming for Ýri. He pulled her behind him. »Don't you dare to try that again!«

In the dark a group of red lights appeared like the eyes of an insect. She has her infra-sights up … Suddenly the lights swung around, there was rapid fire and the howl of his wolves.

Three minutes.

»There is no point in this! We have to retreat!« Hanzo commanded, but Brigitte seemed to have spotted something and rushed off. Also Ýri ran off, aiming for the shadows where Widowmaker had vanished.

»Argh, I have it with you Vikings!«, Hanzo groaned.

»Just go already! I will handle it with Brigitte!« Mercy went off on her own as well with reaper on her heels.

»This is madness! Come back!«, Hanzo yelled.

Two minutes.

He heard weapons clashing in a side alley. »Ýri!«, he charged off. He raced around the corner just to see Widowmaker giving Ýri a well-aimed kick in the stomach. She fell over, wincing.

Hanzo unleashed another salve of arrows and when some shurikans themselves added to that, Widowmaker finally hooked off.

One minute.

Hanzo did not stay to thank his brother and rushed to Ýri's side. She kept one hand pressed on her belly. Her face a pained grimasse.

»Ýri … «, he crouched down to her just to be pushed away by the little hikari. »Hey!«

»Get them back to the shuttle, where she can treat her«, Genji told him while drawing his sword.

»And you are … ?«, Hanzo wanted to know.

»I will go and help the others«, Genji said before he fell silent. His brother and his wife looked at each other for what felt like minutes as if having a secret conversation.

»Oh, goddammit! Let's move!«, Hanzo picked up Ýri and started running.

»Good«, Genji was really not liking the idea of splitting up again, but they were at a disadvantage right now.

He rushed back to the battle, when recognizing the hooded figure, not wanting to let his chance of killing that emo bastard of a Talon agent slip away. But he also needed to get back to Shizuka. Brutal battle was bad for her health. Mercy told him that her core could collapse under intense strain. He would not let that happen. So he reluctantly jumped away from Reaper and towards a ledge.

Damn it Mercy, you already ran off and left Brigitte to fend for herself!

Genji jumped from ledge to ledge, letting his Shurikans fly and managing to cut one of the tubes going from the tank on Moiras back to her hands.

»Dammit!«, she cursed as the ominous liquid spilled everywhere.

Genji allowed himself a moment for a smug grin, even if no-one could see it, before he motioned for Brigitte to follow him. They used the back alleyways to make their escape and disappear.

To make sure they weren't still followed, they took a longer route back to their shuttle.

»Thanks, Genji. I was getting my ass kicked back there«, Brigitte said, still panting from their run through what felt like half of Florence.

»You're welcome«, he answered. »Now let's get back to the others and get out of here.«

»Music in my ears.« At least Brigitte seemed relieved.

When they finally made it back, he immediately looked for Shizuka. When he found her, she seemed alright if her fussing over Ýri was any indication.

Are you ok?, he asked as he made his way over. She looked up and then ran over to him.

»I am fine«, she assured him.

They hugged each other close, both checking the other for any lasting damage. Thankfully there was none.

»And your core?«, he asked next.

»It burned off quite a bit, but it is still stable«, she said softly.

He leaned his forehead against her, relieved. »Good.«

»Too bad I didn't get that bastard for that«, he grumbled.

She chuckled. »Don't worry. You will get him next time.«

»Oh I will«, he vowed.

When the shuttle took off, Genji looked over to Hanzo and Ýri. Ýri was looking better, even if a little green in the face. Hanzo was hovering over her like a protective mother-bear over her cub. Or wolves. There were two giant wolves flanking Ýri and looking around suspiciously.

How did he manage them changing forms? He wondered. Maybe I need to up my training schedule once we are back. I can't allow myself to lag behind.

His arm around Shizuka, he looked out the window and watched Florence disappear from view.
