Chapter 45: Can we panic now?

Hanzo groaned. Shizuka's and Ýri's fighting has become a common thing in the Overwatch base during the past weeks. They were already at it again, when Genji and he entered the hall for some lunch. The brothers only heard the last bits of yelling before Ýri suddenly stormed off looking green.

»What was that about?«, Genji asked just as puzzled as Hanzo felt.

»She is angry because Shizuka gave her a long-term mission ban«, Brigitte answered. »I would very much like to know why though.«

Shizuka kept her stern expression. »None of your business.« The Hikari walked out after the raging Viking.

»This is all very strange«, Brigitte said and spoke out loud what Hanzo had been thinking.

He watched after them worried.

What is wrong with her? This going on for long enough now. Especially how she is constantly trying to avoid me lately …

He sat down on what was Ýri's usual place and stared at her half-emptied plate. Wait … She ate apples? But she hates apples!

»Genji?«

»Hm?« His brother looked up as if Hanzo had interrupted one of his secret mind-conversations he used to have with Shizuka ever since their wedding. Something that made Hanzo quite jealous …

»Can't you try to find out anything?«, Hanzo asked his brother. »Clearly your woman and Ýri are hiding something. And it worries me. Deeply.«

Genji choked. »I-I am sure it is nothing. Just a cold.«

»Liar«, Hanzo growled. »You just found out something, didn't you?«

So it is not only Ýri obviously keeping something important from me. No, my brother knows and keeps silent as well.

»I am not hungry«, Hanzo declared and left the hall.

She started to avoid him. She started making up excuses, when he tried to sleep with her. She started avoiding even talking to him.

Does she have enough of me? Does she want to break up?, Hanzo asked himself, when he reached the practice range. Cold fear crept up upon him.

When did this all start? Why didn't I notice that we were breaking apart? Heavens, what have I done wrong?

It all started shortly after his brother's wedding, if he recalled it right. From then she started behaving weirder and weirder and so did his dragon-wolves.

But why? We just had amazing sex that night and never really quarreled before. Well, not seriously. Hanzo shook his head. He missed arrow after arrow.

»My, my. You must have a lot on your mind.«

Hanzo looked back. The snake of his brother was standing there.

»Just tell me«, Hanzo said taking aim again. »Does she want to leave me?«

»Huh? Why would she?«, Genji seemed confused.

»I feel it, Genji … and it breaks my heart … «, Hanzo admitted after another arrow missed its target.

»Oh, you have a heart?«, his brother asked in a very unfitting sarcastic tone.

»Goddammit, I love her! More than anything in this world! So of course it does!«, Hanzo yelled.

»You do?«, Genji seemed surprised. »And does she know that as well?«

»I-« Hanzo let his bow sink. In fact he had never told her that he loved her. Deeply. With every bone in his body and every drop of blood in his veins. With his whole being. And why wouldn't he? All his thoughts involve her in some form now. Always. Every second.

»She knows«, Hanzo answered. »Why do I need to tell her, what she already knows?«

»Still. Women like to hear it from time to time, you know?«, was his brother's smart suggestion.

»But it can't be the reason she wants to break up with me.« Hanzo started shouting again. And missing.

»I doubt she wants to break up.«

»Then what else it, you smart-arse?!« Hanzo had now thrown away his bow and faced his brother.

»I know, I am not good enough for her! But I tried! I tried so hard hoping it would be enough! But it isn't! I screwed it! The first and only thing in my life I wanted to get right! I screwed it completely! We Shimadas are really destined to end up alone!«, Hanzo started to yell out his frustration.

»Brother, calm down.«, Genji tried to ease his pain.

Hanzo sighed heavily. »I am losing her, Genji. I can feel it … I am losing her and I will end up alone … «

»If that were true, don't you think she would jump on every mission just to avoid you?«, Genji pointed out.

»Well, she is trying, isn't she?«, Hanzo scoffed. »I am grateful to your wife for keeping her from. That entire null-sector business is growing more and more ugly with every passing day. But I guess your wife is just trying to make her face me.«

»True«, Genji answered.

»So she wants to break up with me«, Hanzo felt like crying at the mere thought. As if something was tearing his heart apart.

»No«, Genji replied.

Hanzo growled angrily. »So what is it then?! Stop being so secretive! Is she ill or what?!«

Genji stayed silent for a while before he said: "In a way."

»So it is serious«, Hanzo concluded.

»Well, somewhat. It is life-changing for sure.«

Hanzo was losing his patience and seized is brother. »So what is wrong with her?! Tell me already for you clearly seem to know something!«

»I can't«, Genji managed to press through his teeth. »I am not even allowed to know.«

»Says whom?!«, Hanzo yelled.

»Shizuka.«

»That wrenched bitch! You will tell me what is wrong with my mate and you will tell me now, before I tear every piece of metal off you!«

Genji gave him a head-butt and Hanzo stumbled back feeling his nose cracking from being abruptly introduced to metal. »Don't you dare call her that!«

Hanzo kept a hold on his bleeding nose and showed Genji his middle finger with the other. For a moment he thought his younger brother would hit him again, but thankfully Genji kept his distance.

»You don't deserve it! Any of it!«, the younger Shimada yelled and turned on his heels.

Why do I have the feeling that he is the jealous one now? Hanzo followed his brother into the direction of the med-bay.

Shizuka frowned at the sight of both brothers in the doorframe. One with an angry green glare and the other with a cracked and bleeding nose.

»What have you both done now?«, she wanted to know.

»Where is she?«, Genji asked.

»Who?«, Shizuka obviously tried to act clueless. And she was doing it badly.

»Ýri. In which room did you lock her up? Or did you tie her to one of the beds here?«, Genji asked more firmly.

»I can't tell you and you know why.«

Hanzo was glad that not everything between his brother and his wife was lovey-dovey all the time and that they clearly also had their arguments.

»My brother is worried sick, because no-one gives him the facts. He thinks she is about to break up with him! Do you think this fair?!«, Genji continued.

The little Hikari glared back and crossed her arms. »This is no question of fairness. It's neither your nor my place to tell him. Only Ýri can tell him.«

»Excuse me«, Hanzo shoved himself past the bickering couple hoping to find Ýri somewhere in the med-bay. His dragon-wolves were already with her, so he knew which directions to take. He hesitated in front of the door and knocked first.

»Shizuka?« Her voice was weak and sounded as if she had been crying.

»No. It is me«, he entered without awaiting her answer.

»W-what are you doing here?!«, she seemed rather shocked – or angry – to see him. Because of his messed up face, maybe?

»What happened to your nose?«, she asked.

»Not important!«, he replied. »I just want to finally know what is wrong with you!«

»I am fine!« Ýri declared determined.

»You wouldn't be in the med-bay crying alone if that were the case.« One of his spirits was rubbing its head against her with a soft purr. The other nudged her worried.

»Ýri, please«, he pleaded with an unusual weak voice. »Tell me.«

She gave a short nod and Hanzo closed the door. They needed no interruptions right now. One of the spirits turned wolf and went off guarding the door. The other – in dragon form – was flying restless circles around her.

They are constantly tensed and on the watch, when around her, Hanzo thought when he sat down next to Ýri. »So?«

She just looked at him and suddenly burst into tears. »I am so sorry!«

Hanzo looked down at her confused. »B-but why? What happened?«

»I am pregnant for fuck's sake!«

Hanzo stared at her. A brush with a feather would have been able to throw him over. »You are what?«, he asked, completely sure he must have gotten that wrong.

»I am with child. Your child in fact … « The dragon cuddled close to her again, rubbing its head on her belly with soft coos.

Hanzo felt rather dazed. »But … how … ?«

Now she looked at him as if she seriously doubted his intelligence at the moment. »I assume you are rather familiar with the process. It must have been during the wedding. Or even before.«

»But- that wedding was weeks ago!«, Hanzo was unable to get over the shock just yet.

»Months … «, Ýri corrected him weakly.

»M-months?! Months and you did not tell me?!« Hanzo couldn't believe it.

»Yes! I did not! Because I was too afraid to!«

He immediately stopped his rant and sat down again feeling rather guilty. »I-I am sorry … that you felt you couldn't … trust me with that … why would you? I am far from being good parenting material.«

»Why do you say that?«, she asked him with a rather terrified tone.

»Because I am a Shimada. No Shimada ever was a good parent. It was just all about breeding the perfect scion to secure the empire.«

She turned her face away from him, but he still could see the tears streaming down her cheeks.

Hanzo buried his face in his hands. When did they allowed themselves to become so reckless? It shouldn't have happened.

»So I ruined it … «, she suddenly whispered.

»Ruined what?«, Hanzo wanted to know.

»Everything. Our relationship. You were so happy before and now I ruined it with putting this burden onto you.« Her voice was trembling.

»It is not your fault. I am to blame as well«, Hanzo answered.

After some moments of silence, he looked up to her. »C-can I … touch it?«

A weak smile formed on her lips. »Of course. Though you will barely feel a thing. It is not bigger than a jelly bean yet.«

Carefully he reached out and gently laid his hand on her belly. He did not expect anything, so the shock when he felt the barely noticeable flicker of a spirit was all the greater.

»Hanzo?«, Ýri whispered. »Are you alright?«

»I-it is right there«, he answered in a hoarse voice. »I can feel it.« Indeed the little thing was bouncing up and down excited.

»It … it is happy … «, Hanzo said, barely able to believe it himself.

»W-what now?«, Ýri wanted to know. She sounded afraid.

»Now I will protect you both until the moment I die«, he answered with a grim determination.

Hope gleamed in her teary eyes. »You won't leave?«

»Never«, he answered. »Not as long as you don't tell me to leave and never return. And even then, I might not. I am a dragon. We are too stubborn to leave our treasures.«

There was the small affectionate smile on her face again. His heart started melting every time she was looking at him with that soft expression.

»But you are also a wolf. Caring and protective towards your pack«, she told him while gently stroking a strand off his face.

»You are my pack now«, he whispered while leaning down. »You both are.«

His lips tenderly met hers and he hoped he could convey all his deep affection and love for her in one kiss.

»And I will protect you with my life.« He placed a kiss on her head and huddled her into a blanket. »Rest now. I will ask Shizuka about the details.«

»Alright.« She seemed more at ease than she had been in weeks and Hanzo was grateful for that.

He waited until she fell asleep before he ensured his spirits were guarding the room well, before he joined his brother and the Hikari again. They were very silent and looked pretty messed up, when he returned. Obviously they had a huge fight, but from the way they leaned against each other they had worked through it now.

To his surprise it was Shizuka who approached him first: »Hanzo, I have to apologize.«

»What for?«, he asked confused.

»For keeping all this from you. She was so terrified, so she tried to pretend it wasn't there at all. She recklessly wanted to throw herself into harm's way on every single mission. … I just … I had to do something … «

Hanzo stopped her with a gesture. »It is alright. And I am very grateful that you tried to keep them safe. Are Ýri and the child both healthy?«

Shizuka nodded. »They are.«

A relieved sigh escaped Hanzo. »At least that … «

»Still«, Genji scoffed. »You don't deserve it. Not one bit.«

»So you are jealous, brother«, Hanzo realized.

»Because your mate is pregnant with a child you never wanted while mine will never be able to?!«

»Don't say that«, Hanzo growled. »You have no idea about what I want.«

»Don't I?«, Genji weakly chuckled. »You will be as bad as our father was.«

»I. will. Not. I will do everything to ensure my child will grow up safe and happy and not abused by the Shimada«, Hanzo answered with cold determination.

»Even fling yourself from this base into the ocean, if you notice you can't do any better than our father?«

»In that case you are free to slit my throat beforehand and I wouldn't even put up a fight«, Hanzo answered.

»Now, now, there is no need for such drastic measures«, Shizuka tried to calm the brothers.

»But there might be drastic measures needed anyway«, Hanzo told them. »I don't want to worry Ýri with it. Not yet. But I could feel its spirit.«

Hanzo could see them both paling and exchanging quick, disbelieving looks.

»That is not possible«, Genji said astonished. »She is no Hikari! The child shouldn't have a spirit!«

»But they both have spirits of their own«, Shizuka added thoughtful. »So it is unlikely but not entirely impossible. A spirit form is after all hereditary. Without Hikari blood it will fade more with each generation … but it's no wonder that the first one will still have a fully-fledged spirit …«

»Well, our child has a spirit of its own«, Hanzo said gravely. »And you both know, what that means.«

»If the Shimada get to know of this and it is a boy with the mark of the dragon … they will come to get him and raise him into their new scion«, Genji spoke out their thoughts. »If it is a girl with a dragon mark they will come to kill her before she is even born, because female dragons tend to be much more powerful and impossible to control. At least that is the story they told us.«

Hanzo turned to Shizuka, who suddenly went even more pale. »What is it? Out with it.«

She looked away. »It can't be said for certain yet, but I think it is a girl.«

The shock left Hanzo weak and shivering so he looked for something to hold on to. Finally he found himself a chair.

»There haven't been any female dragons for centuries«, Genji said. »They were all aborted ... like our own little sister.«

Hanzo's hands became furious fists. »But they sure as hell will not get their hands on my daughter. They will not. Ever.«

In that moment he noticed that he had truly abandoned the Shimada teachings. He wasn't a dragon any longer. The clear shape of a white wolf spirit stood guard in front of Ýri's door.

Hanzo looked up, when he felt his brother's hand on his shoulder. »You can count on us. We will be by your side and protect them.«

Shizuka stepped next to her husband and nodded with a grim expression. »We will.«
