Chapter 46: Wolf Warrior

Genji barely noticed Hanzo slipping past them to go and find Ýri wherever Shizuka had hidden her. He stared down at Shizuka and she glared defiantly up at him.

»You need to stop doing this!«, he told her. »This secrecy of yours needs to stop«, he added for good measure before she could even open her mouth.

She smirked humorlessly, an expression he found extremely disturbing on her normally so kind and open face.

»Didn't you know? Secrecy is in my blood«, she retorted almost coldly.

He took a step closer. »This has nothing to do with your clan! Or your health! This is about my brother and his mate! His. Not yours.«

»So now you accept their match?« she asked instead, appearing calm. He knew it was something she got from Mercy. And he really hated the doctor for that.

»Stop trying to avoid the issue«, he growled.

She looked away. »I am only doing my duty as a doctor and keeping my patients medical information confidential.«

Genji reached out, grabbed her chin and made her look into his eyes. His mask was lying on the table next to them.

»We both know it's more than that«, he almost whispered now.

For a few minutes she held his gaze stubbornly before her defenses melted and the pain showed clearly in her blue eyes.

»It's not fair«, she whispered back just as quietly.

Almost immediately he softened. »No«, he agreed, »It isn't.«

»How long did you know?«, he asked after a moment of silence.

»For a while now«, she answered. »I didn't just want to announce it to everyone without even talking to Ýri about it first.«

He scowled. »But Hanzo at least deserved to know.«

Some fight returned to her. »So you think he would have preferred hearing it from me than from her mouth?«

He nodded immediately. »He wouldn't have cared who told him as long as he got the answer sooner.«

She twisted out of his hold. »So if our roles were reversed, you wouldn't have minded hearing the news from Angela?«

He blinked. »What?«

She didn't face him and her voice trembled when she spoke. »If I had been the one pregnant, wouldn't you have preferred to hear that from me instead of Mercy while I was still panicking over how to tell you and what your reaction would have been?«

He scoffed. »That comparison is bullshit.«

Surprised she turned around to him again. »What?«

He refused to give into the urge to roll his eyes.

»Aside from the fact that Mercy would have killed me for daring to knock you up instead of telling me about it: We're not Hanzo and Ýri. Their relationship is still young and unstable. They barely figured out where they stand with each other while we know and loved each other for over ten years – yes, I count those years too, you can't deny that it's true.«

He waited for her nod before he continued. »Hanzo worried the whole time that Ýri might have wanted to end their relationship. Because he has no idea about pregnant women or people in general and can't read the signs correctly.«

She looked torn. »I … I understand.«

He shook his head. »You don't. We Shimadas are taught to keep our emotions to ourselves and don't show any weakness. You didn't see him almost breaking down at the mere thought that she could be leaving him.«

She tore at her hair. »I was only trying to do what's right!«

»Right for your own morals, yes, but not what's right for him or them!«, he shot back. She froze, her eyes going wide.

»You're … you're right … I-I never … «

He sighed. His anger had mostly evaporated anyway. »You owe them an apology.«

She sighed as well and nodded. »I know. I will do it once they are done.«

»Good.«

Awkward silence descended on them. No one dared to move.

I wish things were differently … Shizukas thoughts reached him almost silently. It took him a while to adjust to their bond again but it did have advantages. You could read the others moods more easily and sometimes even the thoughts your mate didn't want you to hear.

Me too. He answered softly.

Her head snapped up, realizing he had heard her. »You would want to … ? I mean you would be okay with … ?«

He smiled weakly. »I would have loved to. With you.«

Tears shimmered in her eyes. In the next moments, she was in his arms, their bodies tightly pressed together. The resounding metaling clang when her core clashed against his chest pieces reminded them of the reason they would never get to experience what Hanzo and Ýri were going through right now.

He put both his arms around his wife and held her close. »They don't know what a privilege they have«, he said not bothering to keep the jealousy out of his voice this time.

She nodded and admitted quietly. »I don't know if I can keep watching her go through her pregnancy. I don't think I am strong enough.«

He startled. »Really? After you went completely overboard with trying to protect her and her child?«

She looked up at him. »It hurts. Every time I look at her. Every single time it comes up.«

Realization dawned. »You tried to avoid having everyone talking about it all the time«, he exclaimed.

She nodded with a guilty look. »I know it's wrong and selfish. I should be helping her unconditionally, but I couldn't help it.«

»You're not alone with that. I feel the same when I think about my brother becoming a father … and I never will … «

She hung her head. »I am sorry.«

He squeezed her. »It's not your fault. If it's anyone's, it's mine.«

She wildly shook her head. »That's not your fault at all!«

He smiled weakly at her determination. »I should have been there and protected you from getting that debris through your chest.«

She actually rolled her eyes at that. »You have blamed yourself enough for that. It. Wasn't. Your. Fault. Neither that I wasn't careful enough during Overwatch's fall nor that my core is not strong enough to support a pregnancy and would end up killing both me and the child.«

»But-«, she stopped him by putting a finger in front of his lips. »None of it.« A small smile made itself onto her face. »I am a big girl and old enough to take the blame for my own actions.«

He sighed. »Fine.«

It still sucks, he added mentally.

I agree, she responded. I would have loved to see it. You would have made a wonderful father.

He blushed slightly. »What makes you so sure about that?«

»Call it a woman's intuition«, she answered simply.

They both rested in each other's embrace, lost in their imaginings of their own little family for a while and drawing strength from each other's presence.

»What now?«, Shizuka finally asked into the silence.

He thought about it. »Now we get it together and find a way to work through this.«

She nodded. »I will need to find the strength to help Ýri through her pregnancy somehow.«

He kissed her softly. »And I will be with you. Every step of the way.«

She smiled and gave him a firmer kiss. »Just like I will be there for you. Always.«

He chuckled. »Considering how often I clash with my brother, I will need all the support and logical reasoning I can get.«

She joined in. »I don't mind at all.«

At this moment his brother emerged from the bedroom containing Ýri. Genji stroked a strand of her messed up hair out of her face and she adjusted his armor to its proper place again before they both turned their attention to the distraught archer – swearing to protect his mate and the child she is caring by all means. The news of the child possessing its own spirit was disturbing for them all. On the other hand, it will be the first dragon in centuries growing up in relatively peace and not leashed and corrupted by the Shimada. That has to count for something, doesn't it?

Hanzo stood straight again and blew the smoke of the cigarette into the chilly air, when noticing the metallic footsteps of his younger brother. »What is it now? Trying to 'provide emotional support' again? Please don't.« A few ashes dropped to the ground and he set it back to his lips.

Genji raised one eyebrow. »Since when did you start smoking again? Shouldn't you … well, avoid it? Especially now?«

»It is not that I started it again«, Hanzo stared at the cigarette in his hands, which he had reduced to half of its original seize. »It was just to calm my nerves, I guess.«

»Well, to add some variety to shooting dummies? Did Winston even repair them yet?«, Genji's comments had their usual annoying effect and Hanzo rolled his eyes.

»So you really want it, huh?«, Genji asked leaning against the wall next to his brother.

»I don't know if I can do this, Genji«, Hanzo sighed. »I have to be better than our father. I want my child to grow up safe and happy and not raised into a killing machine. I want … yes … I want it. It is Ýri's and mine. So, of course I do.«

»Well, with Ýri being the mother the little brat can't turn out too bad«, Genji chuckled.

»True«, Hanzo joined in with a small smile.

»Now that is good to hear. Still, I know you would manage to 'be better' even without me.« Both Shimada looked up startled and Hanzo immediately got rid of the cigarette.

»Ýri. You should be resting«, Hanzo answered. Still, it warmed his heart to hear how much she trusted him.

»I am not deathly ill, you know that?« She looked from one brother to the other and then nodded. »I will return to our quarters then. This rather seems like some kind of brother-talk.«

Hanzo awkwardly looked at Genji. »Well, kind of … I will come after you in a few minutes.«

They both looked after her for a while. »What happens now?«, Genji asked, when she disappeared from their sight.

»I don't know. Honestly, brother, I don't. But we can't stay here«, Hanzo thoughtfully replied.

»Why not?«, Genji wanted to know.

»Because this is a military base. Ýri won't be able to find the peace, calm and rest here she needs now. Not with everyone busy fighting. She will only get even more frustrated to be 'useless' around here and unable to help while her friends are out in the field probably fighting for their lives.« He paused a moment, then Hanzo continued. »We both were raised in something worse than a military base, brother. An ancient palace and temple, but a dark and frightening place nevertheless. But I want my child to have a home. I want it to feel safe and loved and happy there.«

»Where will you head to then?«, Genji asked.

»Back to the Lofoten Islands«, Hanzo answered without any hesitation. »The village Ýri grew up in. There is no Null-Sector activity up there and not even Talon operates anywhere close. Nor do the Shimada. And even if they track us down, they will be uncovered easily in this tiny, remote village at the northern edge of the world. And with her uncle's help and her brother's, I will be able to protect them. Despite, this village felt like home to me than any other place I have ever been to. I would like to return there with my family and build them a home with my own hands.«

Genji seemed rather put off. »You? Building a house? With your own hands? Seriously? Well, that I have to see.«

Hanzo raised an eyebrow. »What is wrong with that?«

»Besides from that I always thought 'nesting' rather being a womanly thing? Well, just promise me you will make sure the roof won't crash down before you let Ýri or your little dragon hatchling enter.«

»It is no dragon«, Hanzo replied determined.

»What then? A snake? The famed northern world serpent?«

Now the older Shimada growled threateningly. Genji frowned at his brother's glare and an unpleasant shiver crept down his spine. It did not sound like a dragon at all. Rather like the growl of an alpha wolf ready to protect his pack. Genji risked a look over his shoulder when the growl got answered from behind him. Indeed two large white wolf spirits manifested themselves.

»Easy, brother«, Genji said. »You don't want to kill me again, yes?«

»My daughter is no dragon and certainly no snake for I myself am no dragon any longer. And I will never be again.«

»Yes, yes, yes. I got it, I got it«, Genji told him offhandedly. »You need Shimada-alarm systems installed at your future home.«

»I know that«, Hanzo answered and Genji could literally see worry weighting down on his shoulders. »I can't lose them, Genji … None of them. I wouldn't survive such a loss.«

»You will manage and I will help you«, Genji reassured him, surprised his brother let him see his weaker and softer side. »Shizuka and I will both help you and do anything in our power to protect Ýri and the little wolf-dragon-bear-whatever from the Shimada. And Talon. Or weird patrons like Reinhardt.«

»How can you, when you are in Gibraltar or wherever it is, Overwatch sends you?«, Hanzo wanted to know.

»Well, Overwatch is reestablished and not running badly at the moment. Rather the opposite. So Shizuka and I could join you. At least for a while.«

»Are you sure?«, Hanzo seemed uncertain about this offer.

»Why not? Someone has to make sure you don't mess it up and see that your handmade house won't crash down on your family.«

»My family … « A small smile appeared on Hanzo's face. »Thank you, Genji.«

»Yes, well, I will go now and get my ears nagged off about making life changing decisions on my own without consulting my wife first«, Genji grimaced and Hanzo laughed. »Yes, just laugh it up, brother. But we both know who is truly in charge in both our relationships.«

Hanzo shook his head in amusement before turning towards his and Ýri's quarters. It will be alright, he thought. It has to be.

When he entered their bedroom Ýri was seemingly sleeping already. Freki – the ever growing wolf pup – had rested his head on her still barely noticeable belly and his wolves joined in immediately.

»So the Úlfhéðnar returned home at last«, he suddenly heard her whispering.

»What did you call me?«, Hanzo asked confused. »What does it mean?«

Ýri sat up a little and smiled at him. »It means 'wolf warrior'.«

»Well, fitting?«, Hanzo chuckled. »How are you? Did you eat well? Are you warm enough? Is there anything I can get you?«

Ýri rolled her eyes. »Thanks, I do not require anything right now. But come here, there is something I need to show you.«

Hanzo curiously approached her. »What the-«

He could not believe his eyes. There on her shoulder, curled together and tightly pressed against her neck slept a tiny little dragon releasing content purrs now and then. Hanzo sat down beside her, still staring at the little creature in shock neither knowing what to think or what to do.

»H-how?«, he asked weakly.

»I don't know. But I guess telling you and your rather … positive response to my … state … It was such a great relief for me«, Ýri told him. »It made me finally accepting it and I realized that I want it as well, what obviously also strengthened your daughter's spirit.«

He couldn't answer. Instead Hanzo stared at the tiny dragon, who would easily fit into his palm. Yellow fur covered her snake-like body together with green, pink, blue and violet spots. Those spots moved and changed forms and colors from time to time as if his daughter's spirit had not decided on her true color yet. The minutes went by and changed into one hour. Maybe even two but he could not look away.

After a while she sneezed and woke, finally noticing him. Hanzo did not dare to move. He did not know what to do, but obviously he did not even need to. His daughter recognized him immediately and shot straight at him with an overjoyed squeak. He still couldn't say something. The words were stuck in his throat and Hanzo knew he would start crying from joy, if he forced himself to speak.

Carefully he reached out for the tiny spirit now settling on his shoulder and stroked her head with the tip of his finger. She purred and squeaked in excitement, leaning closer to his touch and falling from his shoulder at that. Hanzo caught her immediately and put her back on his shoulder.

»Don't you worry. Daddy won't let you come to any harm«, he said with a soft, hoarse voice.

She circled on his shoulder a little, before curling up and yawing. She pressed herself as close as possible against his neck and fell asleep again soon after. Gently he caressed over her fur until he was sure she was content again. Then he looked at Ýri. All the love and affection for him was written in her emerald green eyes.

Hanzo couldn't hold back any longer. He burst into tears and pulled her close against him, kissing her over and over again. After all these dark years, his dark past and the suffering he had been through, he never thought he could have been so incredibly happy – and terrified it could be taken from him again – as he was right in this moment.
