Chapter 47: Assassins

Hanzo studied the maps for their return home. Again. He tried to at least, but he couldn't stop watching her instead. Sure, he was glad that she stayed in the base these days as »operation manager« and team coordinator for Overwatch missions, still he wished she would work less.

»Ýri. Please.«

»What is it now? You want to tie me to a bed or something?«, she snapped from her seat in front of the holo screens.

Hanzo blushed. »Well, if it helps?«

She rolled her eyes. »Guess this would be the most romantic act you did in weeks.«

»What do you mean?«, Hanzo wondered.

»You won't let me work. You don't want to sleep with me. You-«

»I just- I am worried! What if … if I hurt you or if I hurt her?« Hanzo carefully petted the tiny dragon on his shoulder.

Ýri groaned and turned her attention back to her work. »Idiot.«

»I just- … that woman … hey!« He had no chance to brood over Ýri much longer since his daughter attempted to steal his holopad. Sadly, the little fiend had no idea how to control her intangibility yet. So instead of flying off with it the holopad landed squarely on his naked foot. Hanzo cursed and only the Shimada discipline prevented him from comically hopping around on one foot.

»You little- Genji!«, he picked up the holopad, acting like nothing had happened.

»I am in no way little, brother«, came the amused reply. Obviously, his brother saw the whole mishap and couldn't wait to tell that idiotic cowboy of it. Hanzo was sure of that.

»I did not mean- you- Oh no!« With both hands he managed to capture his little daughter's spirit before she could try to snatch the holopad from him again. Unfortunately, that meant letting go of said holopad.

Fortunately for his foot, Genji captured it just in time. »Woah. The little one has her mother's temper, doesn't she?«

Hanzo sighed. »Definitively.«

»So? Seems like you are preparing to leave.« Genji stated as he laid the holopad onto Ýri's work table.

»Yes … Are you still planning to come with us?« Hanzo did not dare to hope.

»I get my ear full. Very much so. But … Overwatch is well re-established now. Better than we expected. Better than it was in the first round. And as strange as it sounds, I feel as if I am getting old. So why don't leave some fame and heroic adventures to younger recruits and enjoy life a little myself? I can't promise you we will stay up there with you forever, but for now we're in. To protect our niece. Our family.«

His brother declaration left him speechless for a moment. »I … I don't know what to say. Thank you, brother.«

»Well, yes sure.« Then Genji pointed to something behind Hanzo. »You better rein in that little firefly, before it demolishes all our electronic devices.«

Hanzo turned and watched as his daughter's spirit happily gnawing on his communicator. He paled.

»Heavens, let's hope she will learn actually walking very, very late once she is out of her mother«, he said and made a mad dash for both – dragon and device.

On his way back to their quarters Genji remembered how his brother chased after the cheerfully chirping spirit, who kept evading him and grinned at the image. Nevertheless, he was unable to ignore the painful sting in his chest. I guess you can't have it all, he sighed internally.

That is a very mature thing for you to say, he recognized Shizuka's voice in his head and felt her sadness as his own.

We need to stop that, Genji told her with a new determination.

Stop what?, she wanted to know. He could feel her sinking deeper into his own conflicting thoughts and feelings.

Envying them all the time. Being jealous and begrudging them for what they have and we will never gain. We are better than that, Genji told her.

Yes, but … He could hear her sad sigh as if she was standing right next to him. Still, I can't stop thinking about what could have been.

But we should, Genji softly encouraged her. We are alive, we are healthy – well, with a few missing body parts, but who really counts them? – and we are very happy to have each other. And soon we will have a niece we will both adore. Of that I am certain. Isn't that enough?

He felt her happiness rekindling. It was like a warm embrace. Yes, my love. You are right. As long as we have each other, we will manage whatever comes our way.

Genji smiled. That we will.

He got a picture of her smirking playfully now. And as aunt, I can dote on my niece twice as much and ruin all of Hanzo's work of getting some discipline into her.

He burst out laughing at that thought. Oh yes, I like the way you think, my love. Count me in on that.

Her amusement danced through his mind and his own smirk widened in response. Looks like I am corrupting you nicely, he teased her.

A mental huff. Arrogant dragon~

So you were always this cheeky and devious? My, my, the things I don't know about my own wife.

He didn't need to see the fond eyeroll to know it was there. Keep going like that and I will volunteer you as Ýri's taste-tester for tonight's good-bye-dinner, my dear dragon.

Genji stopped and tentatively asked after a moment of silence: Do I want to know, what Ýri is trying to cook up with all these raging hormones? He shuddered at the mere thought of what he might be forced to eat. Especially if she was anything like her father in the culinary arts …

Did you ever wanted to taste a salmon stuffed with chicken, cheese and prickles? And borecole? In a chocolate sauce and tangerine?, Shizuka told him similarly amused and disgusted.

Ehhh … I think I pass?, Genji answered horrified.

Thought so. So I will try to save it behind her back, his wife answered.

Good luck with that. The whole base is counting on you. Genji even thought about warning Mercy about the imminent danger of food poisoning. After all, his master Zenyatta taught him to always be prepared for every possible outcome.

»Hey! I saw you were putting something into that pot!«, Ýri shouted.

»Did I?«, Shizuka immediately acted as if nothing happened. »I was just checking on it.«

»I doubt it.«, Ýri shook her head. »We won't need any kind of 'damage control' like you were clearly doing just now. My father served his famous salmon many times to the Overwatch crew. Especially Jesse never tires of bringing up the stories.«

Shizuka shuddered. »Yes. I remember your father's cooking.«

Not even a metal stomach could handle that … I was stuck in the med bay for three days!, Shizuka heard Genji groaning, when the Shimada caught her thought. I remember that one. It took us forever to get that stuff out of you. It kept clogging up the wires and tubes as well as your internal organs and arteries, she replied. A moment of silence. Eww … Too much details, love.

Shizuka blushed. Sorry, sweetheart.

»Are you mocking my late father's cooking?« Yri's voice cut into the mental conversation.

She shook her head. »No, I just-«

»Cheers, love! The kitchen cavalry is here to help!« There was a flash and a terrible noise when Tracer crashed into the kitchen at high speed. »Oh, I am so sorry, Ýri!«

Lena was covered in almost all the ingredients the Viking had already prepared.

»Alright, I get it«, Ýri sighed, when noticing Lena's short wink at Shizuka. »I just wanted us all to have one nice last evening together. But I also know my taste can't be trusted at the moment.«

A collective cheer was heard from the common area. Lena grinned at her success, while Ýri deadpanned.

»Just let us do the cooking and sit down somewhere to relax«, the cheery girl said and patted her on the back.

»I swear, if someone is telling me to sit down or rest and relax one more time, I going to set the base on fire«, Ýri replied sourly while leaving the kitchens.

Lena looked horrified. »Is she really going to do that?«

Shizuka nodded. »I have no doubts about it, if she is pushed far enough.«

»So Shizuka threw you out of the kitchens? Can't say I am surprised«, Hanzo said softly, when he discovered Ýri away from the others, just watching them.

»I am just surprised it took her so long«, Ýri chuckled.

»How are you feeling?«, he asked.

»Hanzo, I am fine! I won't drop dead, I just-«

»I did not mean your condition. Just about … about departing«, he explained.

»Well, sad of course«, she sighed. »But I am also glad to go home.«

He placed a soft kiss on her head and chuckled at an angrily squeaking baby dragon.

»Seems like our daughter wants all your attention for herself«, Ýri smirked.

»Then she better learns to share soon«, he answered before kissing her tenderly. »So? Shall we join the others?«

»Alright then«, she answered and took his hand.

»Now, now, green bloods!«, Reinhardt waved at them. »Don't keep us waiting! We are starving over here!«

»Yes«, Genji shouted back from the kitchen. »Someone should get that man several buckets of beer and a nosebag.« Hanzo had no idea when his brother even sneaked in there. But he was sure that it was not to help the Hikari with the meal.

»Oi, if you stop distracting your wife, we would already be feasting!«, McCree hollered in the same volume as Reinhardt.

»Yes, yes, yes … «, came the grumbled response.

With a smirk Hanzo watched Genji and Tracer flashing to and from the kitchens to bring ingredients and get the cutlery prepared. »I see Shizuka had been outdoing herself again«, he commented.

»As always«, Ýri answered with a fond smile. Together they found their seats when everything seemed to be ready. Ýri next to Brigitte and Hanzo next to her and Genji.

»I just wanted it to be something special«, the Hikari got off her apron and finally sat down next to her husband. »Now, Ýri, eat. You need it.«

»When will you all just stop nagging me on what I have to do?«, the Viking complained, but loaded her plate with potatoes already.

»Potatoes? I would assassinate someone for good rice, teriyaki and sake«, Genji muttered.

»Well, since you volunteered us for heading to Norway with them, you better get used to the food as well«, Shizuka told him teasingly.

Hanzo chuckled at their banter. »He had always been a picky eater.«

»Are you alright, Ýri?«, Hanzo heard Brigitte asking and he turned to her.

Indeed, his mate looked a little green. »Are you alright, my love?«

She looked at him surprised and Hanzo blushed when he suddenly realized he had never called her that before. And now it had happened in front of everyone, nonetheless. It must be because he continuously heard his brother and wife say it to each other. He could feel McCrees stare trying to burn a hole in his skull. Instead he kept his attention on Ýri.

»Don't worry. I just … it seems your daughter is not in the mood for potatoes«, she soothed his nerves.

So Hanzo looked around for the little spirit. When he couldn't find her worry immediately took root. He tried to explain it with the presence of all the others so closely around him and her mother scaring the little one and keeping her from emerging.

He looked up from his own plate, when he heard Freki barking at Ýri, while she was stealing an apple from the dessert plate. His worry lessened. If she still wanted apples, she was fine.

She blushed when everyone gave her strange looks. »I guess that's what she wants to eat right now«, she defended herself, »Always sweets first.«

»So«, Genji started with a full mouth. At Shizukas reprimanding look, he swallowed immediately with a sheepish grin. Hanzo gave her a respectful nod for that. He had never managed to get his brother to stop such atrocious behavior. »When we get to Norway, will we get any place to live? A cottage maybe? Or is there some kind of base?«, Genji continued after all food was swallowed.

»It is a small village and there is an old operation base below an old fortress, but I do not see why you can't have your own home«, Hanzo answered his brother.

»Good. Because I planned to have our own place. So we won't have any trouble sleeping, when you try to get your little troublemaker to stop screaming.« Then he smirked. »And of course to make as much noise as we want to ourselves.« The men on the table cheered and drank to that while Shizuka got an interesting cherry red color.

»Don't you-«

Freki's suddenly frantically barking made Hanzo turn around immediately. »Ýri?«

To his horror he saw the little spirit twisting and bending in obvious pain while flickering like a dying light bulb.

»ÝRI!« He just caught her as she was about to crash to the ground. Her whole body was deathly still.

»Ýri, what is- SHIZUKA!«, he cried in his desperation.

The healer rushed to his side.

»DO SOMETHING! SHE CANNOT BREATHE!«

»Yes, I noticed, Hanzo. Now move aside«, she said in a firm and focused tone.

»No!« He held her closer.

»Hanzo. I need to examine her to help her.« Her calm voice belied the worry he could see in her eyes. Reluctantly he let go enough of his mate to allow his sister in law to do her job.

By now Ýri was shaking in his arms, fighting for breath, her eyes filled with confusion and fear. »No, no, no, no, no. Stay strong. Shizuka will help you.« He looked for the little spirit just as it vanished into thin air.

»NO! Shizuka, do something!«

»It is poison«, the Hikari stated. »But I can't tell yet which one.«

Hanzo did not understand. »I don't care! Just save her! I can't lose her!«

It was Genji who shoved them aside, a small vial in his hand. Gently he steadied Ýri while forcing its content down her throat. After a few seconds which felt like a life time for Hanzo she gasped and drew breath again, before sinking back against him completely exhausted.

He stared at his weakened mate. She suddenly seems so small and vulnerable …

After he reassured himself that she kept breathing normally, he looked up to his brother. »How did you … ?«

»Luckily you still seem to keep antidotes close«, Genji answered, heavily panting. »One of the poisons our father loved to use.«

»Lock the base«, they caught Winston's calm, but determined voice among the other shocked Overwatch members. »Obviously an intruder got past Athena's defenses.«

Hanzo barely listened to the others speculating and strategizing plans for searching the whole base.

This whole thing felt like a bad dream. Numbly he watched his brother picking up Ýri and carry her to the med bay. Slowly, he followed. Everything suddenly felt so cold and he couldn't even bear to look at her.

It is my fault. I did this to her. I lowered my defenses by relying too much on Overwatch. I should have protected her better.

Shizuka started the proper treatment. Her expression was grave. No. No, that cannot be, Hanzo thought, as he felt his joy being drained from him with every second that passed.

He had failed. Nothing could change that. And nothing could forgive it.
