Chapter 31: Friends As We Should Be
When we walked into the kitchen I went over to the cabinet to look for the instant hot chocolate.
"So you're here all by yourself?" Jacob asked.
"Yeah!" I said the same time that I jumped up to see I could find the hot chocolate in the back. I heard Jacob laugh before he asked his next question.
"How come?" He asked.
"My dad is at work and my mom and my sister are at the hospital." I said.
"Is everything alright?" I turned around and glanced at him to see his face and saw that he was more than genuinely curious.
"The last time I talked with my mom she said that my sister was going to be alright. But I still feel uneasy about it." I said looking at the cabinet once again then I realized that there was no hot chocolate in here. Mom must have taken the rest for Jasmine, she loves hot chocolate.
"You don't have to tell me but can I asked what's wrong with her?" He said then I turned around and looked at him.
"Yeah, it's alright. She has the Lupus and the Shingles virus." I said and then something stirred in me. Maybe I wasn't as alright as I thought I was... If I was I would have fully explained to him her diagnosis because from the look on his confused face he didn't know what either of those meant.
"They both make her body feel really bad." I said then he nodded his head at me. And with the sympathy shining through his eyes I could tell that he understood that I did not want to explain any further than I have. I stood there leaning against the counter top for few seconds before I changed the subject.
"So how about I make you homemade hot chocolate instead I just realized that we don't have any of the instant packets." I said then he gave me an easy smile.
"Sure, i've never had homemade hot chocolate before." He said.
"It's really easy, there aren't a lot of ingredients that are needed to make it. Anyway before I start making it would you like anything else? This house is loaded with snacks thanks to yours truly." I said and then Jacob gave me a wide smile as he brought his hands together.
"Bring on the snacks." He said mischievously. I let out a laugh before I went to the cabinet that held plenty of chips & dips, Slim Jim's, cookies, muffins, brownies, and candy, both chocolate and non chocolate. Should I be ashamed of my miniature Willy Wonka garden? I wondered then I looked over and noticed the look on Jacobs face. I raised an eyebrow at him because he looked as if he had just win the jackpot. He reminds me of myself a little bit.
We had ended up staying in the house a lot longer than I had intended because we wounded up not only eating all the snacks we could but also we watched on of the most awesome movies ever made. A movie that I could never get tired of: Batman Begins.
"That has to be my favorite movie of all time. It's dark but also exciting and the actions scenes were just amazing." Jacob said from the other end of the couch.
"I know! I could watch this over and over and not get tired of it." I said. For him this movie may have came out last year but for me it has been out since I was in elementary school. I know that I can watch this movie repeatedly because I have and I still love it a little more every time I watch it.
"It just came out not to long ago, so don't make any promises to a huge Batman fan like me." He said jokingly. I smiled and looked away from as I started remembering other huge movies that I was a fan of. It turns out there were a lot of movies I was going to have to wait for, both movies that have seen and have not seen. My eyes widened when the Avengers 2 came to mind, I have to wait nearly a decade for that to come out.
I let my head fall onto the couch as I stated to feel lame, this was so unfair. After several seconds of brooding and hearing Jacob munch on some chips I turned my head and saw the clock on the wall. My head shot up when I saw that it had been three hours since Jake's dad and Charlie left.
"We should go back outside" I said be looking at the clock which caused Jacob to look at it as well.
"Yeah we should." He said getting off the couch, then he grabbed his jacket from the love seat where he had laid it. "We got lucky, they're usually back after 2 hours, they must have had a good catch. Which is great for us because i'm sure 'Chief Swan' has no problem with knocking on your door with my dad to come and get me." He said and I looked him at wide eyed before I blew out of breath and he laughed at me. We were lucky I caught the time if Charlie would have come over my house and did that.
"I'm going to get some more hot chocolate before I go outside, do you want some?" I asked him as I got up to go to the kitchen.
"Yeah that would be awesome." He said as he shrugged into his jacket.
"Coming right up ." I said. I went to the kitchen and quickly made us both a cup of hot chocolate and then I put them into the microwave to heat them up. As the microwave's timer counted down I put on my jacket and then I took them out when they were ready.
After I had given Jacob his cup we went back outside and sat down onto the porch and started to talk while we drunk our hot chocolate.
"So you have never been to Forks before you moved here permanently?" He asked me with a thoughtful expression on his face.
"No, but why do I feel like that surprises you?" I asked Jacob with a curious smile and he smiled back at me.
"I thought that since you had so many friends and a boyfriend so soon after you moved here you might have visited a couple of times before. I mean your dad owns the one of the biggest business an Forks, it just made sense." He said. Boyfriend?
"Yeah well I haven't been to Forks before I moved here." I said. I guess that I had a peculiar look on my face as I thought about him mentioning my supposed boyfriend because he looked at me thoughtfully again. I know why the school would think that Edward and I were together already but why were enough they talking about me in La Push to insinuate anything?
"Jacob?" I said and he hummed.
"I don't have a boyfriend." I said.
"You don't? I thought that guy with the sports car that came to see you at the beach was ." He said. Then I remembered how John had came to see me and my eyes widened when I realized that he was talking about him.
"Oh! No..!" I said shaking my head with a smile on my face and Jacob had scrunched up his eyebrows as he smiled at how lively I had become over this misunderstanding. "No, John and I aren't together. That was like the second time I spoke to him face to face anyway." I said and we both started to laugh easily at my explanation.
"So you're just friends..?" He asked me.
"Yeah we're just friends." I said.
"So no boyfriend..?" He asked and I looked him straight in the eyes. In them I could see that this prying was spurring from hope, but I couldn't let that be.
"No, but there is someone and it's getting pretty serious between us. You may have heard about him at the beach, his name is Edward. Hopefully we'll officially be together soon." I said with my head slightly leaned away from him in a thoughtful manner and I looked away from his chin to his shoes.
"Oh." He said. I could easily hear the disappointment slip in that one short and word. Better disappointment than heartbreak.
"Do you have someone?" I asked him.
"I thought that I did...But no, I don't have anyone." He said looking anywhere but at me. You would think that someone had just stole his lunch money with a look like that on his face. Now I was starting to get suspicious, was he making me feel guilty on purpose?
"I'm sure that you'll find someone, someone like you has to." I said.
"Someone like me?" He asked turning his eyes back to me for a moment.
"Yeah, you're funny, nice, and an incredible mechanic." One of the random things we had spoken about. "Not to mention you have great taste in movies like myself." I said joking.
"Yeah." He said nodding. If only I could make him smile.
"However you're going to have to work on that modesty thing." I said seriously. He turned his head and smiled at me before he nudged my shoulder and we both shared laughed.
Then after a couple of moments of silence Jacob looked at me once again this time with an almost serious expression.
"You think if you hadn't met this Edward guy, you might have considered that maybe we..." He let his sentence trill off and had let his eye suggest the rest.
"If I had not met Edward...You and I would be just friends as we should be..." I said. I may have been determined to not leave any hope behind, but it was completely true. I had chosen Edward from the beginning, and that's the way that it was going to stay. Jacob was an incredible guy and very cute but he had too much of a boyish quality, something that I wasn't attracted to. He would most likely become a little brother to me and would always be seen that way. That is why I could laugh easier with him then most people, I wasn't intimidated or guarded because I didn't feel attracted to him. And I certainly didn't feel weak in the knees or amazing and special like Edward made me feel. The blunt truth was in my mind and that was something that bothered me, if only I was kinder then I wouldn't think this way.
At least I was nice enough to not even think about telling him that. There isn't any reason to hurt someone's feelings like that. Jacob nodded his head to me and looked away from the porch and towards the neighborhood like I was, we both just sat there in silence. It wasn't uncomfortable between us, there just wasn't anything good, bad, or even a harmless comment to be said.
It wasn't long after did we see Billy's blue truck coming from down the road and then it pulled into Charlie's drive way. After Charlie got out of the driver's side he went to the back of the truck and retrieved a white bucket that looked like it was heavy. He sat the bucket onto the ground and he looked over at us and gave us a wave and we both returned the gesture. Charlie carried his fishing pole to his porch and stood it up against it then he went back for the bucket and did the same, when he went back to the truck he was there for a short time before he looked over at us again.
"Jake! Your dad says let's go!" He called. I looked away from him and turned my head towards Jacob.
"I guess I have to get going now. I'll see later?" He said getting up from his spot on the porch.
"Yeah, you will." I said with a smile and he smiled back at me before he jogged over to the driver side of the truck and got in then I knew the truck was out of sight. I looked over at the mug that Jacob had been drinking out of and grabbed it and then I sat it right next to mine. I laid my hands down in the back of me, as I leaned on them I tilted my back and drew in a deep breath that cleared my head. I should spend more time outside, I thought with my eyes closed.
After a couple of minutes had passed I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket so I took it out and looked at it. My breath hitched in my throat my when I saw that it was a text message from Edward. I sat up quickly and read the message.
'What are you doing right now?'
-Edward
My chest thumped with excitement and a wide smile had spread across my face.
'Texting you.' I replied.
'What a coincidence, i'm texting you to.' He joked back.
-Edward
'Oh ha ha.'
-Me
I let out a small laugh before I got up from my place on the porch and picked up the two mugs before I went into the house. After I put away the mugs I went upstairs to my room.
'What are you doing know?'
-Edward
'Laying on my bed.'
-Me
'Doing what?'
-Edward
'Just texting you. I'm sorry that I don't have a more interesting life where I go on camping trips.'
-Me
'Oh really? So what have you been up to for most of the day?'
-Edward
'I hung out with a friend.' I decided not to tell him that I hung out specifically with a boy, it might create a misunderstanding.
-Me
'Did you have fun?' I rolled my eyes and reluctantly answered.
-Edward
'Yes...'
-Me
'See, at least you had some fun today.'
-Edward
'Yes, but I still wish that I had your company all day. I miss you.' I was very hesitant to send that but I did. I put my lower lip in my mouth as I waited for a reply.
-Me
'I miss you to.'
-Edward
After he sent that I ducked my head under my hand and smiled as my heart went overdrive. I laid there with my eyes on my ceiling trying to catch my breath because my heart just kept beating so rapidly. I had to get up and pace my floor and see if I could come up with anything, but I couldn't, then about a minute later my phone vibrated again. I jogged over to my bed and jumped on it which caused it to bounce. Right after my bed stopped moving I grabbed my phone and smiled when I read the next text he sent me.
'I will most likely come back early.'
-Edward
'Really? So will you come to see me?' Should I expect that from him? I thought biting my lip.
-Me
'As soon as I get back.'
-Edward
I turned over on my back to fan my blushing face and take a couple deep breaths. Calm down Jess, calm. Whew, I might faint. I turned back over onto my stomach to respond to him.
'I'm really looking forward to it.'
-Me
'So am I.' Uh oh my heart just flew out of the window.
-Edward
'I guess i'll see you tomorrow then?'
-Me
'Keep the window unlocked for me.' Literally I was just making squeaking noises from my throat now but somehow I just managed to text him back.
-Edward
'Alright.'
-Me
I can't wait to see him, I thought as I sighed. I laid there on my back with one hand laying over my eyes and the other with my phone in it angled towards my head. I laid there quietly about five minutes before I finally sat up and looked at my alarm clock that was on top of my nightstand, it was only 4:18 pm. There was at least six more hours until I was tired again, what will I do until then..? I looked down at my remote near my pillow and just chose to stick to my original plan. Movie marathon it is then.
I took off my clothes and dressed into a big white t-shirt, gray sweat pants and a pair of warm socks and then I took a warm blanket from the hall closet and headed downstairs. I laid the blanket over the love seat and then I went over to the television and turned it towards the chair before I turned it on. And then I pulled the cover over me and picked up the remote control and flicked though the t.v. it was because I had just texted Edward not to long before I came down here but instead of watching the usual comedies or action movies I ended up watching romantic comedies until about eleven o'clock. And i'm talking about the classics, Runaway Bride, My Best Friend's Wedding and French Kiss was apart of that list.
After the last movie credits started to roll down the screen I turned off the t.v. with the remote and rapped the blanket around me and then I got up went upstairs to my room and fell into my eyes was glued shut and I was so ready to fall asleep even though I still had to take a shower before I went to bed. Luckily for me in this moment of being so comfortable and peaceful my phone happened to be laying right next to my ear and started to rang loudly. My head jerked away from my bed at the loud irritating noise and my heart starting beating rapidly because of how much that just scared me. Regardless of how much I despised that phone I answered it and slapped it against my ear.
"Hello?" I said groggily.
"Hey Rain, did I wake you up?" I heard my mom said from the other end. I closed my eyes and smiled and then sat up on my elbows.
"Yeah I was just going to sleep but I needed to take a shower first. So it's good that you woke me up." I said.
"Oh, well I was calling because I missed you and I wanted to see how you were doing." She said.
"I miss you to mom and i'm fine." I said.
"Are you sure?"
"Ya and I can't wait to see you and Jasmine." I said. My mom and my sister I were the ones that I was closest to, I miss sitting down and talking with them about anything. We spent the most time together then with anybody else especially when my sister and I were kids.
"I can't wait to see you either Jesse." She said sincerely.
"So...what's up with you and Jazz?" I asked.
"We're fine. Jasmines eyes went down and she can open them now."
"That's great!"
"Yeah she can see again and picked a great time to, the hospital had switched the doctors. And we're not complaining about that." She said hinting at something.
"What do you mean?" I asked smiling.
"Well! Remember that blond doctor who examined you when you got into that accident?"
"Yeah, Dr. Cullen..." I said squinting my eyes.
"Well that's who they switched us to. You should have seen your sister when she first opened her eyes and saw Dr. Cullen she said 'yeah I see you' and smiled with her cute dimples." She said laughing and laughed with her before a yawn broke through it.
"You're tired i'm going to let you go to sleep now." She said.
"Okay, i'll see you guys tomorrow when I visit. I love you and tell Jasmine I said that I love her."
"Okay, I love you too. Goodnight." She said.
"Goodnight." I said and then I hung up. I slipped off my bed lazily then stood heavily on my two feet as I took of my clothes. Then I grabbed my towel and I went into the bathroom.
I knew that if I took my time I would most likely end up falling in the shower because I was already tired and the water was so warm and relaxing. I quickly washed up before I allowed myself to stand there under the shower of warm water a little longer, it took a lot not to fall a sleep while feeling the warm water fall over my body. After I got out and dried myself off in my room another challenged began, I had to really concentrate to put one leg in each leg hole the right way in my underwear. When I got my underwear on I was so tired that I had decided that was all that I needed for bed so I laid down and as so as my head hit my soft pillow I was out like a light.
In my head the romantic comedies were starting to take effect into my dreams, not that I had any problems with that...

About future chapters I do have four pages written down for the next chapter, but it's not finish yet so I will need some time to complete it...Yeah.
